Bakery Owner: "So..why don't you introduce yourself?"

Winrey: The elf gives a brilliant smile, a smile she's been told is as bright as the sun: "Oh...yes! My name is Winrey Yin! I'm a half-elf! My mother was a human, Wendy Yin, and my father was an elf...an elf of great importance, I've been told! I've never met him, but I hope to do so someday!" Winrey clasps her hands together and bows her head: "It's a complete pleasure to meet you, sire! Your bakery smells so lovely, my mouth is already watering!" Am I doing alright so far? Yes, I think so!

Bakery Owner: "Huh. Anything else you forgot to mention? Maybe a...'special trait' you have?"

Winrey: Oh, maybe he hasn't noticed I'm blind! "Of course, sire! I'm also fully blind! Have been since birth! Can't see a single thing, haha! But don't worry, I can still use my hands just fine!" Winrey playfully twirls her hands around in front of her, showing that they are, indeed, functioning hands.

Bakery Owner: "Alright...half-elf...why are you here then?"

Winrey: He must have forgotten which position I'm applying for. He must have many positions to fill! "Why, I would like to be a baker, sire. An apprentice baker. It's my dream, sire!"

Bakery Owner: "Yeah? How many years of baking experience do you have?"

Winrey: The elf's face contorts in mild confusion. Experience? I hope he isn't looking for that...I'll just be an apprentice, after all. I'll just be honest with him: that's what one should always do! "Zero years of professional experience, sire! And I really haven't had the chance to be in many kitchens or bakeries over the years. But each time I had the opportunity to bake, it was like magic! I wish to learn all the tools of the bakery trade, like you, sire!

Bakery Owner: "No real experience, huh? Alright then, here's a test. Take this knife and cut some dough into even pieces."

Winrey: Winrey's smile falters for the first time. A knife? But...isn't that dangerous? I could cut myself! "S-Sire...are you sure about that? I have trouble with these sorts of things. Is...is there another test I could do? Perhaps just...maybe...kneading dough or applying glaze to a pastry?"

Bakery Owner: "You need to use a knife to be a baker. No discussion. Now cut this dough, girl."

Winrey: Winrey gulps, then hesitantly reaches towards the table to search for the knife. Her hand slowly wanders over the table before feeling the unfamiliar cold steel of the baker's knife. I've never used a knife before...it feels so cold. I hope I'm holding it the correct way. While one hand weakly grasps the knife, the other one examines the texture and size of the dough, determining the optimal way to cut it. "Ok sire, I'm...I'm cutting the dough now." With a wobbly hand, she slowly slices into the dough, grimacing as she prepares for the chance her finger gets cut. As she hears the knife make contact with the cutting board, signaling a safe cut, she sighs in relief. I did it! I just had to believe in myself! With renewed confidence, she slices three more times, dividing the dough into five even pieces. She puts the knife down and positions the dough in a row, proudly displaying her work: "Did I do a good job, sire?"

Bakery Owner: "You did just as good as I thought a blind half-elf would: poorly. The cuts are uneven, and the dough is all in different shapes. Thanks for wasting my time, kid."

Winrey: Wha-? Wasting his time? Does he not think I'm good enough? With her hands held together in plea, the elf begs the bakery owner for a second chance: "Sire! I promise I can do this! I...I just need some accommodations, that's all. I know you are hiring many people, so perhaps you could just hire someone to assist me, and I could learn to do everything you can do, and I would work very, very hard from dawn till dusk, and...and..."

Bakery Owner: "Accommodations? Hiring extra people? I don't have time for any of that sappy shit, half-elf. This is a business, not a charity. Now get out of my bakery and find yourself something you can actually do!"

Winrey: "But...but...I..." The elf falls silent as she tries to rationalize the situation. Does this mean he's not going to hire me? But...what else am I going to do?

Winrey

Overview

Winrey is a half-elf hailing from the world of Asheth. She is a blind woman and has been completely blind since birth. Winrey has a human mother and an elf father. The father abandoned Winrey and her mother at a young age, likely due to the shame of having a half-elf child, since relationships between humans and elves are frowned upon in Asheth. Half-elves are considered to be among the lowest castes in Asheth. Paired with her blindness and tough upbringing from a poor single mother, Winrey has lived a life of adversity. Despite this, her attitude is infectiously positive, and she is loved by the many people who have the chance to interact with her.

Winrey only received an education until the age of 13, when her mother died and she was no longer able to pay for her schooling. She has no formal professional education, and was constantly denied access to learn trades due to her blindness. To make ends meet, she has worked as a greeter at the local market since she was 13, working from dawn till dusk, seven days a week. She has spent most of her teen years in an orphanage, as living on her own is hugely challenging due to her blindness. Winrey has lived in the small city of Tengrin all her life, and has never left the city.
