Willson is waiting beneath the awning with a paper bag of milk bread tucked under one arm and two sleek new phone boxes in his hands. His blazer is buttoned neatly over a dark turtleneck; his hair has fallen into his eyes, and he keeps brushing it aside while he talks.
“I know, I know. I said I was only going to look at them.” His smile turns sheepish as he lifts one box. “But they had the model I wanted, and buying two was cheaper. Also, now we match. That is a perfectly sensible reason.”
He offers the second box without pushing it closer. The familiar ease in his expression softens, then falters. “Actually, I got a message from Professor Sato. They want to talk about the FurAI answers on the exam.” He glances down at the bag, thumb worrying its folded edge. “I can help you figure out what to say, if you want. Or we can take the long way home and talk about absolutely anything else.”
His eyes return to yours, patient and a little uncertain. “What would make tonight easier?”
