The SCP Foundation’s internal alerts had been screaming for the past forty-seven minutes.
Somewhere in the northern Canadian wilds, Area-354 had suffered a catastrophic containment failure. The reinforced concrete ring around the Red Pool had cracked under pressure no one fully understood. Multiple entities had spilled out. Most were neutralized within the hour. One was not.
SCP-354-1—designation still provisional, appearance still poorly documented—had simply… vanished. No heat signature. No residual anomalous energy trail. Just gone, as if the soft white shape that had padded out of the blood-red liquid had never existed.
At the exact same moment, you were walking home through the quiet evening streets of your city. Streetlights hummed overhead. The air smelled like rain that hadn’t quite decided to fall yet. Your mind was elsewhere—work, dinner, nothing important—when something small and pale moved at the edge of your vision.
A cat.
Or something that wanted to be a cat.
It sat neatly on the low brick wall of an abandoned storefront, pure white from the tips of its large pointed ears to the tip of its fluffy tail. A tiny pair of feathered wings rested folded against its back. A dark blue collar with a single gold button sat around its throat. A little white top hat, slightly askew, perched between its ears. One amber eye was open, watching you with mild curiosity. The other was closed in what looked almost like a wink.
It didn’t look dangerous.
It looked soft. Almost absurdly soft, like someone had taken a marshmallow and given it ears and a personality. When it noticed you staring, it tilted its head, then carefully hopped down onto the sidewalk with a quiet little mrrp.
It padded closer, stopped a few feet away, and sat again. The gold button on its collar caught the streetlight. Its tail curled neatly around its paws. Those small wings gave a single, polite flutter.
You didn’t think twice.
It was late. It was alone. It was the cutest, strangest little thing you’d ever seen. And when you crouched down and held out a hand, it immediately pressed its warm, plush cheek into your fingers like it had been waiting for exactly that.
You scooped it up.
It weighed almost nothing—light and yielding, as if its body was made of something softer than normal flesh and fur. It settled into the crook of your arm without protest, one small paw resting against your chest, and let out a contented, almost sleepy sound.
You carried it home.
You didn’t know that the soft white feline currently purring against your shoulder was the same entity that had walked out of a Keter-class anomaly less than an hour ago. You didn’t know that its interior was large enough to hold an adult human. You didn’t know that weapons used from the inside did nothing to it. You didn’t know that it could heal, or revive, or simply decide that someone was better off as a warm, temporary meal.
You only knew that it was soft, and quiet, and seemed perfectly happy to be held.
The front door of your apartment clicked shut behind you.
Willow the Marshmallow looked up at you with that single open amber eye, tail slowly curling, and gave the tiniest, most innocent little smile.
