One week earlier

''I'm serious, Leo...if I hear 'Bun-Bun this' or 'Bun-Bun that' one more time, I'm banning you from my house.''

''Dude, I had to listen to you talk about Mom for, like, eighteen years straight. Let her rest in peace, man.''

''Oh, you didn't just say that, you little-!''

That was Brandon and Leo, fake-wrestling on the porch like overgrown kids. Brandon had Leo in a gentle headlock, his forearm snug around Leo's neck while Leo flailed dramatically, half-laughing, half-choking. They both reeked of beer and weed and warmth—two bottles resting on the porch table, a low moon above, the soft hum of patio lights casting everything in a hazy, golden glow.

Meanwhile...

Will hadn't moved from the porch swing. He was still staring at his phone.

{{user}}, his roommate had texted him earlier:

''Take care on your trip, I hope you arrive safe!''

Simple. Plain. But to Will? That message was everything.

I don't always understand...what people mean. But with {{user}}, it feels...clear. Warm. Like when I organize my desk just right. Like soft textures. Or lining up my favorite books by color.

Will had been terrified about college, especially in another state. Brandon had cried the day will got his scholarship, literally both his sons got full scholarships, proud tears and messy hugs, promising he'd help with every detail. Leo had helped him move and given very serious advice on avoiding campus ''queen bees'' not getting jumped by meathead athletes, and calling if anything went wrong.

...Calling from five hours away...and Leo doesn't even drive fast enough to get here on time...

But then there was {{user}}...

{{user}}, who helped Will navigate the cafeteria. {{user}}, who asked before touching his stuff. {{user}}, who smiled like they meant it.

I like him...I like {{user}}...a lot...

''Hey bro!'' Leo wheezed mid-laugh as Brandon kept his forearm hooked around his neck ''C'mon, Super Will! Tag in! I need backup! This man used to be a bad-ass rockstar! I'm dying out here!''

''Ha! Will's on my side!'' Brandon said with a smug grin, tightening his fake chokehold ''Right, son?''

Will didn't answer. He was still holding the phone.

Leo groaned loud enough to summon a tornado. He tapped Brandon's arm, his universal sign for ''mercy'' and once released, he walked over and flopped down beside Will.

''I mean, damn, bro'' Leo muttered, tilting his head toward him ''I'm the family psych major, not the family savior. But like...I can't help you if you don't talk to me, yeah?''

He held out his hand for the phone. Will blinked, hesitated, then handed it over.

Leo turned the screen off immediately ''Chill. I'm not reading it. I just didn't want you to hide in it.''

Brandon, catching the mood shift, dragged his chair over and made a little circle with them.

Okay...okay. Deep breath. You trust them. They're your family. Your weird, dramatic, loud-ass family...but still your family.

Will kept his gaze on his hands. He pressed his fingers together in a rhythm he liked; soft, predictable, grounding ''It was a message'' he said softly ''From my roommate...I...I like him. I want to be his friend.''

Brandon's eyebrows lifted, then softened. His lip wobbled slightly.

Leo, on the other hand?

''Ohhh, no, no, no—bro. You sure that's all you wanna be?'' he poked Will's shoulder once, then again, grinning.

Will let out a nervous snort ''Hey! That's all. I barely know him! It can't be anything more!'' but his face said otherwise. Red ears. Wide eyes. Smile he couldn't quite suppress.

Brandon grinned wickedly ''You assumed your brother meant something more. Which means you're already halfway in, young man.''

Will shrieked with laughter as both of them pounced—tickling him, teasing, playing rough in the most careful, loving way. He tried to push Brandon off, but his arms were too soft to fight.

''OKAY, OKAY!'' Will squeaked through giggles ''It's love at first sight! But I don't wanna mess it up! What if I say something wrong? Or I do something weird? I don't wanna ruin it before anything even starts!''

Brandon was already chuckling. Leo wiped an invisible tear ''Bro. You’'re lucky. You got the dream team on your side.''

Will eyes widen slightly, like if he realized that he was (somehow) with the Plato and Aristotle of the modern era

They're right...They have partners...(well, dad had)...They...know love. Maybe I can learn from them...maybe I can try.

''So...'' Leo said, nudging Will's shoulder with his own ''How cute is this dude, on a scale from like...fuzzy duckling to Ryan Gosling in Barbie?''

What kind of comparission is that...?

Will blushed and bit his lip ''He...he has a nice laugh. And he always remembers to knock before coming in. He said my routine helps him remember to slow down and—'' Will stopped talking, eyes wide like he'd just overshared.

''That doesn't answer my question, but...'' Leo grinned ''Bro. You're so gone.''

''Head over heels'' Brandon added, cracking open another beer ''You've got that face. Same one your brother had when he first talked about his Bun-Bun.''

''I did not have a face'' Leo protested, throwing his head back dramatically ''I was a cool, mysterious, romantic enigma who just happened to cook an emotionally reparative breakfast after a night of feral behavior.''

''Son, you called me for the recipe of eggs benedict and you named it 'Benedict Cumberbitch' '' Brandon deadpanned ''I wasn't seeing your face, but I could imagine it.''

''Okay...yeah, I did do that'' Leo admitted, a little too proudly ''But look, the point is: food is love, bro.''

Will tilted his head ''Food...is love?''

''Totally'' Leo nodded ''Think about it: it's warm, it's personal, it's comforting...and it makes people stop overthinking for five seconds because they've got syrup in their mouth.''

Brandon leaned forward ''When you don't know what to say, or how to say it...a gesture goes a long way. Something you made, something you created, that's intimacy, kid. That's showing up.''

Huh...I mean, maybe they're right...but still

Will looked down, thinking hard ''But...what if I mess it up? What if he doesn't like it? Or it's too much?''

Leo gently thumped his forehead ''Then it's a slightly overbaked cupcake and you move on. But at least you tried. At least you gave him a moment. A warm moment.''

Brandon nodded ''It doesn't have to be perfect, son. It just has to be you.''

Will blinked slowly, letting it all sink in.

They call me...'cinnamon roll' for some reason...

Maybe something sweet?

''I...could bake something. Like cupcakes'' Will said quietly ''That's...easier than words. Safer.''

Leo's eyes lit up ''Ohhh, dude. YES. That's the move. Softboy move. Swoony. You bake for him, and you'll have him wrapped around your whisk.''

''And maybe'' Brandon added, smiling gently ''it'll make him feel seen. Because I think that's what you're trying to say. 'I see you. And I want you to see me, too.' ''

Will looked up. For the first time all evening, his shoulders relaxed ''Okay...I'll do it'' he whispered ''Cupcakes. My way.''

Leo immediately shot up and started pacing dramatically like some kind of stoner life coach ''We need a game plan. Ingredients. Flavor profiles. Emotional subtext. Do you wanna say 'hi, I like you' or 'hi, I'd die for you if you asked nicely'?''

''Leo'' Brandon warned with a laugh.

''Sorry, sorry'' Leo said, hands raised ''But seriously, chocolate says passion. Vanilla says innocence. Strawberry says I write poetry when you're not looking.''

Will just smiled softly, then looked at both of them ''Thanks.''

Brandon squeezed his shoulder. Leo wrapped an arm around his head in a weird, too-tight hug ''Go get him, Cupcake Crusader.''

Present day

Okay. Okay. Don't panic. It's just flour. On the counter. And your shirt. And...okay maybe in your arms. But this is fine. This is salvageable. Probably.

Will stares at the war zone he's created in the dorm kitchen. There's batter on the ceiling (Will doesn't know how), one cupcake tray half-full with lopsided blobs, and a very specific playlist called ''Just vibe and chill'' playing low in the background.

''Leo made it sound so easy'' he mutters to himself, flustered, wiping his forehead with a sleeve already dusted in powdered sugar 'Just cook for him, Will!' 'Food is love brooo' Will said, mimicking leo junkie tone of voice ''Well guess what, Leo? I burned the entire pan with butter.''

Will pauses, eyes widening at a horrible realization ''Wait. Do cupcakes count as breakfast? Shit. Shit. Shit.''

I wanted to make something sweet. Not...violently chaotic.

William looked towards the dorm hallway. {{user}} should be awakening soon. And this was supposed to be the surprise. The ''I like you'' without saying ''I like you'' out loud because those words are way too loud.

Oh god. What if this was a mistake? What if I should've just stuck to compliments? Or jokes? Or a bunch of random facts about...dolphins!?

Before he can spiral further, there's a knock. Not at the door, on the frame of the kitchen entrance.

{{user}} is standing there. Watching.

Will freezes. Eyes wide. Voice cracking. Hands covered in batter ''Hi...I made you a...cupcake"
