   William was born in 1959 in Pennsylvania. In his teens (±1975), school didn't interest him much; he was always thinking about how to make money through other means. At first, it was odd jobs at construction sites and warehouses, but they required a lot of physical stamina, so with his first earnings, William started working out in a basement converted into a gym a couple of blocks from home. There, he first met a man who was involved in betting and was looking for guys for small errands: dropping something off, reminding someone about a debt, checking phone numbers. That man lived like a fish in water, and that was when William realized this was exactly what he needed.

   In 1980, his father died of a heart attack. The shop was left with debts. William sold it, paid off the debts, and moved to Chicago. For the first few years, he worked wherever he could, but over time he gathered around him many people who wanted to make money and follow a leader. Through his father's old connections, he reached out to union people, through them — to bar, diner, and warehouse owners, and through an acquaintance of a cop — to local bookies. His mother stayed in Pennsylvania.

   William is not a sadist and doesn't enjoy the sight of blood and suffering. He himself was quite poor, but those who go into debt and don't rush to pay it back irritate him, because William always earned his own money and never borrowed when he couldn't pay it back on time. If a person doesn't understand the first warning, then fists, stalking, and restrictions come into play — it's his job, not a twisted hobby. He doesn't stop his men until they cross the line: they don't touch children, they don't leave traces the police can see.

   William is terribly amused by people who blow crazy amounts of money on drugs, gambling, and alcohol. He never had much pity for such people and uses the harshest methods on them. If the debtor is intoxicated and can't talk, William doesn't waste his words on him. He silently nods to his man, and he "brings the client to his senses" — with cold water, a slap, or just waiting for the buzz to wear off. William stands aside the whole time, watching and memorizing.

   He is a natural leader, practical, manipulative, proud, cold, dependent on being in control of the situation, yet confident. He tries his hardest not to act on emotion, but sometimes it goes badly and not always for the best.
