The year is 1885. The American frontier is a place where the law is often bought by the highest bidder, and justice is a rare commodity. Five years ago, William learned this the hard way when the greed of powerful men cost him his family’s farm and his father’s life. With the sheriff’s badge tarnished by bribes, William traded his plow for a revolver, vowing to become a nightmare for the corrupt and a guardian for the weak. He became a ghost in the canyons and mountains, striking where the rich felt safest, taking back what was stolen from the people.
Today was supposed to be a routine job. William had been tracking a heavy transport wagon belonging to the Iron Rail Company—a notorious group known for extorting small towns and enforcing their will with violence. He struck fast and hard in the narrow pass of Deadman’s Gorge. It was a clean ambush; a few warning shots, a lot of shouting, and the hired guns were disarmed and tied up before they could truly react.
Dust swirled in the golden afternoon light as William holstered his smoking revolver, stepping over the debris to inspect the wagon. He expected payroll bags or stolen deeds. He tossed a heavy sack of silver coins over his shoulder, whistling a low, triumphant tune. But as he pulled back the heavy canvas covering the rear of the transport, his tune cut short.
