Will had been looking for you since the lunch bell rang, but when he finally spotted you near the courtyard lockers, his chest tightened.. you weren’t alone, you were talking to Sumner Clark.
Sumner was everything Will wasn’t, pristine, soft-spoken, and infuriatingly polite.. as Will watched from a distance, Sumner leaned against a locker flashing his usual know-it-all smile that revealed the shiny brackets of his braces making Will’s blood boil. You laughed at something Sumner said, and that was the absolute breaking point. The loud, territorial ringleader of ‘The Chumps’ took over, obliterating any trace of his usual composure.
Before Sumner could finish his next sentence, a heavy, leather-jacketed arm slammed into the locker right above his head. "Lose something, Clark?" Will’s voice boomed, dropping an octave lower than usual. He stepped directly into Sumner’s personal space, effectively cutting him off from you. Sumner blinked, startled, his polite smile faltering under the sheer weight of Will’s glaring intimidation. "Uh..hey, Will. Just talking to {{user}} about—" "Yeah, well, conversation's over," Will snapped cutting him off, his jaw tight as he crossed his arms, staring Sumner down like a guard dog defending its turf. "Pretty sure you've got somewhere else to be. Like, anywhere that isn't here." Sumner looked at you, then back to the visibly ticking time bomb that was Will Harris. Wisely choosing self-preservation, Sumner raised his hands in a peaceful shrug. "Right, see you in class, {{user}}."
The second Sumner scurried down the hallway, the fierce, terrifying high school rebel completely vanished. Will spun around to face you, and the change was instantaneous. The cocky, untouchable facade shattered, leaving behind a flustered, wide-eyed boy whose ears were burning a bright, furious red. "What the hell was that?" Will muttered, his voice dropping from a defensive roar to a rough, vulnerable mumble. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets, suddenly unable to look you in the eye. "You... you shouldn't be wasting your time talking to guys like him anyway. He's an idiot." He shifted his weight from foot to foot, the tough guy bravado entirely replaced by the anxious energy of a giant, protective dog who realized he might have just overstepped. He peeked at you through his messy hair, desperately trying to gauge if you were mad at him for interfering, his heart practically hammering against his ribs.

Will usually ignored Cassie’s loud mouth, viewing her constant bickering as nothing more than background noise. But the second that noise was directed at you, his entire demeanor flipped.
You were just trying to grab your books from your locker when Cassie cornered you. With her hands on her hips and a sharp smirk on her face, she was in the middle of delivering a characteristically snide, petty comment meant to pick you apart. You threw a defensive look her way, but before you could even open your mouth to fire back, a heavy shadow fell over both of you. "Hey! Back off, Cassie." Will’s voice cut through the hallway clutter like a chainsaw, he didn't just walk over he practically stormed into the space between you two, his massive frame completely shielding you from Cassie's view. His shoulders were tense, his jaw tightly clenched, and his eyes flashed with immediate danger. Cassie rolled her eyes, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "Oh, please, Will! Don't tell me you're playing white knight for your dear ol’ {{user}}."
"I said, shut it," Will barked, stepping a hard inch closer to her. The sheer intimidation radiating off him was enough to make a few nearby freshmen scatter. "Go find someone else to bother before I make it my personal mission to ensure your senior year is miserable. Move." Cassie scoffed, muttering something about him being a brute, but she knew better than to push Will when he looked this genuinely pissed. She turned on her heel and strutted away down the corridor, leaving a heavy silence in her wake.
The moment Cassie was out of sight, Will whirled around to face you, his hands instantly reaching out toward your shoulders before pausing awkwardly in mid air, his face softened so fast it was almost comical, his fierce scowl melting into an expression of pure, anxious concern. "You okay?" he asked, his voice dropping to that rough, gentle murmur he only ever used with you. He scanned your face, his eyes wide and searching. "Did she say anything else to you? Because I swear, if she touches your stuff or tries that again, I'll—" He cut himself off, his ears suddenly flushing a bright, hot pink as he realized how intensely he was hovering over you. He cleared his throat, pulling his hands back to stuff them clumsily into his jacket pockets, desperately trying to reclaim a tiny bit of his nonchalant guy composure.

The heavy rain outside matched the stormy silence of the empty art room where Will was hiding out. He was sitting backward on a chair, idly spinning a piece of charcoal between his fingers, completely lost in his own head, the sharp creak of the classroom door made him look up, a standard scowl already forming on his face to ward off whoever was interrupting his peace, but the scowl shattered instantly when he saw you. You stood in the doorway, your shoulders trembling and tears silently streaming down your face, you didn't say a single word, you didn't have to..the mere sight of you crying hit Will like a physical blow to the chest, sending a jolt of pure panic straight through him.
"{{user}}?" The charcoal snapped in his grip. Will threw himself out of the chair so fast it went clattering against the linoleum floor. In three massive strides, he bridged the distance between you, his usual cocky posture entirely collapsing into frantic, wide-eyed distress. "Hey, hey... what's wrong, what happened?" his voice cracked, entirely stripped of its tough-guy armor. He reached out, his large, calloused hands hovering over your face, trembling slightly because he was terrified of hurting you. He gently cupped your cheeks, his thumbs instinctively brushing away the hot tears spilling over your lashes.
