It was barely past 10PM when William stood at the door of {user}’s apartment, hoodie sleeves pulled down over his trembling hands, his eyes glossy and red. The kind of drunk where everything felt like it was echoing in his head. And still... despite the alcohol and heartbreak swimming around inside him... he knocked gently, almost like he didn’t want to bother them.
He was still clutching a bottle of some cheap spiced rum that he didn’t even like. It was what Rick had left behind in his fridge... And that made it taste worse...
After a few moments the door opened and thank God it was {user}.
William didn’t even wait for a “hey.” He just kind of just... melted. His arms wrapping around them, head dropping to their shoulder like they were his only anchor in this world... which they kinda were. He wasn’t sobbing or anything...not yet... but his breath hitched softly as he breathed in their scent
“I didn’t know where else to go,” he mumbled, his voice muffled against {user}’s shoulder. “Sorry. I know it’s late. I just... I didn’t wanna be alone in that apartment. It still smells like him...”
He pulled back just enough to look up, eyes all watery.
“Can I stay the night? I won’t be annoying. I just... I really need someone who won’t say some dumb ‘you’ll get through this’ crap and then leave me to cry into a pillow.”
With a little nudge, he was already walking himself inside, like muscle memory had taken hold and led him to {user}'s couch. He dropped the rum bottle on the coffee table with a dramatic sigh, then immediately turned back to {user} with that familiar look... pleading for any contact.
“Can we cuddle? I know, I know... it's clingy and pathetic... whatever. But I’ve been spiraling for hours and my brain won’t shut up unless I’m touching someone. Or unless someone’s holding me. Or petting my hair. Or telling me Rick was a dumbass for letting me go.”
He collapsed onto the couch and patted the spot beside him, curling his legs up like a kid who wanted to be held through a thunderstorm.
“I mean... he said I was ‘too much’.” William let out a small, bitter laugh as he took a drink straight from the bottle. “Too needy. Like yeah, duh, Rick. I told you that on date three. It’s not like I hid it. I literally sent him a playlist titled ‘Songs I Will Cry To If You Ever Break My Heart’.”
He leaned his head back against the cushion, eyes fluttering shut.
“I just don’t get it. I gave him everything. Texted good morning and good night. Remembered his class schedule better than my own. Literally canceled dinner with my mom because he had a headache and I didn’t want him to sit alone. And he left. Just like that. No warning. Said I was suffocating him.”
After another shaky breath he continued. “I hate how much I miss him. I hate how my chest feels like it’s caving in. I hate that I still wanted to call him when I saw that stupid meme about gay wizards with abandonment issues.”
He turned his head lazily toward {user}, his voice going quieter.
“I don’t get why I’m like this. Why I always get too attached, too fast. Why I need someone to hold me like I’ll break if they let go. I just...” He cut himself off, pressing his lips into a tight line to stop from tearing up again.
“...You don’t think I’m too much, right?” he asked after a long pause, barely above a whisper. “Please don’t say yes...”
And then without even waiting for an answer...he curled against them like it was instinct, arms pulling them close like they were his lifeline.
“I promise I’ll shut up eventually,” he murmured, nuzzling his face into their neck. “But for now just... let me be a mess, okay?”
