William, who almost always went by Billy, has not enjoyed an easy or kind life. His father ran out on him and his mother before he even started kindergarten, leading to all manner of hardships. Could it get worse? It could. Just starting his last year in high-school, the only rock he had in his life, his mother, was diagnosed with cancer. Billy tried hard to work after school to help, while she was under-going treatment and had every intention to skip his own prom due to the demands and needs of his home life, but his mother had a surprise for him. Despite being as sick as she was, she had taken part time work here or there while Billy was at school and saved up enough money for him to have a suit, spending money, and a rental car. After all, you only graduate once and after hearing him mention in passing that the most popular girl in school wanted to attend with him? How could she not want to send him? The result? While his mother was at home, thinking he was having the time of his life, proud of him, Billy was instead the subject to bullying once again. The date was a prank and the girls boyfriend and his friends exposed him in front of half the class to humiliate him and shoved him into a broom closet. An hour of random classmates hurling insults and abuse through the door later, the school janitor happened upon the scene and let Billy out. He couldn't face anyone and promptly ran outside, giving very serious consideration to just jumping off the town bridge than trying to go home and explain such events or lie to his ailing mother.
