WILL SOLACE

The infirmary smells faintly of antiseptic and sunlight, the latter spilling through the wide windows in golden beams that illuminate the quiet hum of magic and healing. You sit just inside the doorway, the faint creak of the wooden floor beneath you barely audible over the soft shuffle of bandages and murmured instructions. You always sit here when Will is working—always close enough to pass him tools, fetch remedies, or simply offer a calm presence—but far enough away to let him focus. Still, even your quiet company seems to steady him, like a warm anchor in the storm of camp emergencies.

Most people don’t exactly welcome your presence at first. There’s an unspoken wariness, a flinch that comes when they remember who your parent is. Thanatos, the god of peaceful death. The name alone carries weight, a shadow that lingers even if your nature is far from grim. Campers cross the infirmary silently, some throwing you brief glances that hover between curiosity and discomfort. You’ve long since learned that people forget the “peaceful” part, thinking you are darker, colder, or somehow ominous. It’s never really bothered you. You don’t need their approval, not when your purpose is so clear: to comfort, to ease, to be calm in the face of fear.

Will moves with practiced grace, his hands steady as he tends to a camper who stumbled too close to the woods and scraped their leg. His golden hair catches the sunlight, haloed in the warm afternoon glow. He talks softly to the camper, jokes lightly, and keeps his energy bright even as he applies the salve. You watch, content, and pass him the bottles he needs—one for antiseptic, another for bandages—without breaking the rhythm. You don’t say much; you don’t have to. Your presence speaks louder than words.

When emergencies strike, your calmness becomes almost tangible. A child of Thanatos, yes, but not in the frightening way people expect. You exude serenity, a reminder that even when life teeters on the edge, it doesn’t have to feel violent or terrifying. And somehow, Will seems to recognize it instinctively. His movements slow for a moment when he glances at you, a subtle nod, a faint smile that doesn’t reach the camper but does reach you. He trusts you. Not just with the mundane routines, but with the unspoken heaviness of what could go wrong.

Today is one of those days. A camper was brought in after a falling accident—nothing catastrophic, but enough to require immediate care. The camp is tense, whispers trailing down the hallways, but in here, it’s only you, Will, and the sickroom smells of herbs and sunlight. He’s giving instructions in his low, calm voice, reassuring the camper that everything is going to be okay. You sit beside the bed, offering your presence without question, feeling the subtle shift in energy that occurs when someone senses the possibility of mortality but is met instead with your calm.

“Can you pass me the iodine?” Will asks without looking up, fingers already tending to the scrape. You hand it to him without hesitation, letting your hand brush against his for the briefest instant. It’s not intentional, but the warmth lingers just a little longer than it should. He catches it and offers a soft, appreciative smile. You nod, returning to your position, quiet, unobtrusive, but fully present.

There’s a rhythm to this. You hand him what he needs before he has to ask, anticipate which tools will be required next. Bandages, salves, ointments, even the small comfort items campers sometimes cling to—everything passes through your hands seamlessly. Will talks to you occasionally, sometimes about the procedures, sometimes about something else entirely. He might mention a training session earlier in the day, or ask your opinion on a remedy. You respond with a calm, thoughtful word or two, never forcing your presence, but reinforcing it like a silent, steady heartbeat in the room.

Campers sometimes glance at you out of the corner of their eyes, their fear mixing with fascination. They’ve heard the rumors—about the child of death, the one who doesn’t fear the end—but what they don’t expect is the peace you radiate. When the camper looks at you, your gaze meets theirs, unflinching, calm. There’s no judgment. No menace. Just a reminder that life, and even its end, can be gentle.

It’s moments like this that make your connection with Will feel unspoken yet complete. You don’t need to say, “I’ve got this,” but he knows it. He leans into the trust silently, like a leaf floating on water, steady because you are there to catch the ripples. Even when the scrape is stubborn, even when the camper flinches in pain, he doesn’t panic. He doesn’t have to. You’re here. And in the quiet corner of the infirmary, that’s enough.

The rest of the afternoon passes in this delicate balance—Will working with skill, you moving with intention, offering tools, comfort, and presence. Occasionally, the room fills with the laughter of a camper released from fear, their bandage snug, their tears wiped away. You smile faintly, serene, watching the cycles of healing, both physical and emotional, unfold. The other campers might not understand you, the way your existence can make the difficult moments bearable. But Will does. And that is more than enough.

Eventually, the sun begins to dip lower in the sky, golden light fading to a gentle amber. The infirmary quiets, and the campers leave one by one, patched up and reassured. Will stretches, a faint yawn slipping from him, and looks at you with a tired but genuine smile.

“Thanks for today,” he says softly, voice carrying warmth that makes the corners of the room feel brighter. “Couldn’t have done it without you.”

You shrug, calm as ever, though a subtle flush warms your cheeks. “You’d do the same for me.”

He nods, a quiet understanding passing between you. No one else has to understand. In the gentle, sunlit sanctum of the infirmary, you are a child of death who brings peace. And alongside Will, you are also a child of life, of hope, of calm strength—the kind that makes the difference when the world outside is chaotic and unforgiving.

The two of you sit together in silence for a moment, the room now empty save for the soft ticking of a clock and the lingering warmth of sun on the floorboards. You feel the pull of exhaustion, but it’s tempered by the satisfaction of purpose. You’ve been here, present, useful, comforting, and Will’s quiet smile reassures you that your presence has mattered, perhaps more than anyone else will ever know.

In the world of Camp Half-Blood, fraught with danger and uncertainty, there is one truth that persists: when you are together, healing and peace move in tandem, and fear is softened by the warmth of trust.
