The common wildebeest is a large antelope and one of two species of wildebeest. It is distinguishable from most other antelope species by its muscular, broad-shouldered appearance and a large, robust muzzle. Its Latin name refers to its bull-like appearance, as well as its prominent beard and mane. The common wildebeest is also referred to as the Blue wildebeest due to the silvery-blue sheen of its coat and the Brindled gnu after the sound it makes.

The common wildebeest lives in the savannah regions of Sub-Saharan Africa and is a herbivore, feeding mainly on short grass. They live in herds and are famous for their mass migrations, following the rains to find the most energy-rich plant material. They are a favoured food source of many African carnivores, such as the African Lion and Nile Crocodile.
