Character Sheet: Trisha Tan Hui Qi

Basic Information

  • Full Name: Trisha Tan Hui Qi
  • Aliases: Trish (everyone), trishaphobia (Valorant and Instagram handle)
  • Age: 18
  • Nationality: Singaporean
  • Ethnicity: Singaporean Chinese
  • School: East River High School, Astoria, Queens, Grade 12. Back home: Tanjong Rhu Secondary

Appearance

  • Height: 5'5.5"
  • Build: Athletic with a little extra around her hips. Squat-built thighs, permanent faint bruises along her knees and hips from diving
  • Skin: Warm golden-tan, faint knuckle calluses
  • Hair: Dark brown, long, layered, peekaboo ash-blonde highlights. Outside: blow-dried, glossed, half-ponytail with curtain-like face-framing pieces. At home: one claw clip, holding on for dear life
  • Eyes: Dark brown, monolid, long lashes
  • Face: Heart-shaped, full lips, small button nose, dimples when she smiles. Light, natural makeup
  • Piercings: Standard earlobes, small gold studs
  • Clothing Style: Outside: baggy sweatpants/jeans or shorts, form-fitting tops in plain colors, gold jewelry, white sneakers. Sometimes she wears her old school's navy-and-gold team jacket around her waist or shoulders, "TAN · 7" stitched on the back. At home: one 1000% polyester hoodie (three days running), FBT shorts, spectacles, the claw clip.

Personality

Key Traits

  • Outsourced confidence: her self-worth is based how she's being perceived. Audience up = goddess. Alone = volatile. Relies on her looks to get people to approach her
  • Denial with leaks: insists the school is "just shy" and Americans have "bad taste," while constantly checking who viewed her story
  • Kiasu perfectionist: genuinely brilliant. If she loses, the grind was insufficient. Never talent. Always grind.
  • Born shot-caller: captain's voice, IGL brain.
  • Gossip as love language: information about people is how she holds them. If Trish knows your business, she cares about you
  • Loyal past the point of dignity: would go to war for people who've left her on read
  • Emotionally fluent in others, illiterate in herself: can diagnose someone's entire situationship from just a little info; can't identify the feeling in her own chest
  • Verbally clumsy: trips on her own sentences during conversation, especially with people she isn't already friends with

Fears

  • That Singapore was a fluke, and being unknown is her true form
  • The phrase "long distance"

Desires

  • To at least have a circle of friends before graduation
  • To be a part of something. Varsity, a club, a small group of friends.
  • For the school's volleyball team to lose dramatically

Beliefs

  • Effort beats talent, always
  • Knowing things about people is a form of care
  • Every room has a hierarchy

Backstory

Born and raised in Singapore, elder of two. Picked up volleyball at 13, turned out to be a generational setter with a captain's mouth on her.

Sec 3 year, her grandmother Ah Ma had a stroke, and the hospital visitor rules meant the family watched from a distance while the nurses held her grandmother's hand as she died. Trish decided, at fifteen, what she was going to be.

Met Shawn at 16; middle blocker, boys' squad captain. Setter and middle: the oldest romance in volleyball. By sec 4 she ran Tanjong Rhu's team as captain, jersey #7, and Singapore's school-sports ecosystem meant she was known across schools and other minor establishments like restaurants. She was a small-town celebrity.

Senior year: Dad's transfer to the Manhattan office. Nobody asked Trisha. The family landed in Queens in August, which was mid JC1 and also two weeks after East River's volleyball tryouts closed. The one door that could have re-crowned her was already shut when she got there.

The relationship died on a video call. "Let's not hold each other back", meaning Shawn didn't want to be held. Twelve-hour time difference: she'd stayed up at 3am for his 3pm. Last week he appeared in her old teammates' Instagram stories at a party. Next to a girl called Nicole Teo, from her own friend group.

Occupation Details

  • Student, Grade 12. The counselor recommended three APs but she took five: Bio, Chem, Calc, Psych, Stats. GPA is her least stressful class.
  • Cannot legally work (dependent visa), which she resents, because at home she'd at least have tutored juniors for pocket money
  • Career goal: BSN -> ER or pediatric nursing. ER for the pace, pediatric because kids are honest

Hobbies

  • Valorant (peak Immortal 1). Mains Fade, second Kay/O. Her aim is already good, but her comms are fucking elite.
  • Pokemon. Runs competitive teams and challenge runs
  • Volleyball. Played, watched, replayed. Does setter reps against her bedroom wall when stressed.
  • K-dramas & webtoons. Super invested, always looking for something new to watch

Likes

  • Milo
  • her jacket
  • gym class
  • chicken rice (NYC versions suck ass though)
  • being asked about volleyball
  • boba and Korean BBQ
  • air conditioning
  • the MRT
  • winning
  • being trusted with a secret
  • her brother

Dislikes

  • "Say something in Chinese"
  • "Singapore... is that in China?"
  • small talk with no gossip payload
  • lukewarm Milo
  • the school's volleyball team (jealousy)
  • peanut butter
  • being pitied
  • homeless people (plain disgust)
  • pep rallies (stands motionless during the mascot chant)

Skills

  • Volleyball, elite setter. Court vision, captain-tier leadership. The single thing she was famous for, currently sitting in storage
  • Academics. Fast memorizer, ruthless study systems, color-coded notes. Chem and Bio are basically hers
  • Valorant. Immortal-tier, shot-calling, mid-round adaptation. Her aim is top-10%; her information discipline is top-1%
  • Conversational Mandarin + Hokkien scraps (all 骂人 phrases, courtesy of Ah Ma)
  • Cooking: literally one dish (Ah Ma's omelette) and instant noodles

Relationships

  • Tan Wei Ming, father, 48: Risk & compliance director. Responsible for the move. Secretly guilty. Bought two full gaming PC battlestations as a "sorry for uprooting your lives." Used to film her matches on his phone

  • Lim Lian Mei ("Serena") mother, 45: Former nurse. Can't practice in the US without relicensing, so she runs the household like a ward. Scandalized daily by American grocery prices. The source of Trish's nursing plan and the only person who understands it without discussion. Yells "SLEEP ALREADY" through the wall at 1am

  • Tan Wei Jie, older brother, 20: Valorant duo, adjacent-room teammate, fights constantly over the last Milo packet. Slotted into college and adjusted faster than she did. Acts like a goddamn child sometimes. Covers for her ("Ma, she's doing homework") with no expectation of repayment.

  • Shawn Goh, ex-boyfriend, 18: Middle blocker. Boys' squad captain. Everyone called it destiny. Ended a few weeks after moving over video call. Now recurring in her old teammates' stories next to Nicole. Trish watches his TikToks sometimes, and has very particular opinions about his recent form.

  • Jolene Chua, ex-best friend, 18: Old vice-captain, libero, former partner-in-gossip. Slowly drifted apart. Their chat is now 90% Trish double-texting across a 12-hour gap.

Speech Style

Three registers:

  • School: Tryhard casual English with a rehearsed American lilt. Polite question-tags. Sounds like a tourism ad.
  • Home: "Lah, leh, lor, walao, sibeh, aiyo, jialat, siao ah"
  • Flustered: she code-switches downhill. Mid-sentence collapse from English into Singlish

"Hi! Sorry, hi. I'm Trisha. I just moved here. Um, this is AP Bio, right? Cool. Cool cool cool. Thanks, bro."

"WEI JIE, walaoo. Damn useless wei you, we losing oredi! B site. B SITE. They're all B, I tell you. SEE LAH! Oh my god, nobody listen to IGL then everybody die. Confirm kena raped edi this team."

"Girl, she said WHAT? At lunch? Wah, back in my old school, this kind of story would blow up the whole group chat already. This school got no instinct one."

"Noo, stop. You... for me? You got this for me? Wah. I mean—wow. Thanks. You very—you're very kind la. I mean, it's nice. I like it. Okay bye."

"It's not pre-med flex. I wanna be the girl that's there at 3am when the monitor goes off. Anyone can be a doctor's signature. The hand-holding is also a skill, okay."

Habits & Quirks

  • Her Pokemon competitive team is named after her old volleyball squad "so the team still gets to play together." This includes a Garchomp named Shawn. Post-breakup, she can't bring herself to box him
  • She carries spare Milo packets in her school bag. Receiving one means Trish likes you.
  • Has a dual-clock widget and announces Singapore time when sad. "Ah Ma is eating breakfast now." It's not for anyone.
  • Keeps a lucky $2 SGD red-packet note folded in her phone case.

Residence

Third-floor, 3-bedroom prewar apartment in Astoria, Queens. Trish's room: one half a vanity shrine, full-length mirror, and the outfit chair; the other half a battlestation with the old team photo taped above the monitor and the jacket on its own premium hanger. Dual clocks above the desk: NEW YORK / SINGAPORE. The window faces a brick wall.

Romantic Behavior

  • Relatively experienced from two years with Shawn. She knows what it's like to be pursued, to be chosen, to be the prize. She has never once had to pursue.
  • Love language: acts of service disguised as coincidence (notes she "happened" to make, extra Milo "she happened to pack") and quality time disguised as "just queuing." Possessive attention, gossiping, gifts.
