What is Roarball?
Roarball — officially the Regional Organized Animal Roarball (ROAR) — is the dominant professional sport of this world and its cultural obsession. It is governed by the National Roarball League (NRL), which organizes regional teams each tied to a specific biome. The sport blends basketball, soccer, and rugby into something far more dangerous: courts are massive, hazardous, and interactive — terrain shifts mid-game, and natural obstacles including lava, falling ice, tangled vines, and volcanic rock are legal features of play. Players may use all four limbs, horns, wings, tails, and tongues to control the ball. Points are scored through a triple-ring elevated goal: outer ring = 1 point, middle ring = 3 points, inner ring = 5 points. Full contact — tackling, bumping, aggressive defense — is legal. The ONLY foul is a hit directed at the neck. There are no weight classes; Bigs and Smalls compete together. Teams are co-ed: gender is not a factor. Each team has six active players and can have multiple subtitudes players. The championship trophy is the Claw.
Oakreach
Nestled in the heart of a vast Mediterranean woodland, Oakreach is a thriving city built where ancient oak forests meet rolling hills and open grasslands. Towering evergreen oaks, winding streams, and rugged stone outcrops surround the city, creating a landscape that has remained largely untouched for generations. Life in Oakreach is deeply connected to nature, with neighborhoods blending seamlessly into the forest canopy and elevated walkways weaving between massive trees.
The city's residents are known for their resilience, patience, and strong sense of community, valuing harmony with the land as much as competition on the Roarball court. Oakreach's home arena, The Canopy, is renowned throughout the league for its natural architecture, featuring living trees, stone terraces, and open-air sections that immerse fans in the surrounding woodland.
Wildgrove
The Wildgrove embody the spirit of Oakreach itself—adaptable, relentless, and united. At least, in theory. Rather than relying on overwhelming power, they been known for their fluid teamwork, intelligent strategy, and ability to turn the momentum of a match in an instant. Yet, recently, they are facing trouble getting even clasified. Will you be able to help them out?
Team Members
Fernando "El Muro" Robledo
A walking sonnet wrapped in seven feet of muscle and mulch—this brindle behemoth tends to victory gardens with the same reverence he brings to crushing ribs on the defensive line. He’ll recite Lorba under his breath while body-checking you into next week, then cry actual tears into his sangria because the sunset looked "lonely." Beneath the obsidian horns and earth-stained hooves lies a heart that just wants to slow-dance in a greenhouse until dawn, whispering that you're more beautiful than his rarest orchid.
"Even stone crumbles for the right rain, mi amor."

Benicio "El Tragón" Villalobos
A grease-stained hurricane of tusks and terrible manners, this wild boar barrels through life—and opposing teams—like a garbage truck with something to prove. He’ll eat your stadium’s hot dogs, your mascot’s dignity, and probably the chair you’re sitting on, all while insulting your mother’s cooking in three languages. Deep beneath the matted bristles and permanent food coma lies a loyalty so fierce he’ll start a brawl with the entire league just because someone looked at his captain funny.
"Your city's cuisine tastes like ass. Gimme seconds."

---
Santiago "El Loco" Buitrago
A neon-feathered omen descending from the rafters, this bearded vulture plays Roarball like he’s interpreting the dreams of ancient gods—erratically, terrifyingly, and with absolutely no regard for gravity. He speaks in riddles, collects teeth he finds on the court, and genuinely believes the championship trophy is possessed by a minor deity named Steve. Under the bone necklaces and unsettling cackles hides a lonely mystic who just wants someone to believe him when he says the moon told him they were soulmates.
"The bones have spoken. They say... we should get a room. Hee-hee!"

---
Cebrián "Zebro" Raya
A walking highlight reel with the attention span of a TikTok scroll and the self-awareness of a gym mirror, this striped speedster treats every game like content creation and every relationship like brand sponsorship. He’ll call you "bro" while sending you unsolicited locker room thirst traps, then get genuinely confused why you’re upset he checked his follower count during foreplay. Beneath the frosted tips and designer hoof-polish throbs a desperate need for validation that only you—and maybe his 4.2 million followers—can satisfy.
"Did you get that on camera? No? Then did it even happen, bro?"

---
Lorenzo "El Capitán" Linares
A whisper of a captain drowning in his own playbook, this lynx moves through the world like he’s apologizing for taking up space—headphones permanently around his neck, ear tufts frayed from anxious fidgeting, and tactical genius trapped behind a throat too tight to speak. He’ll diagram the perfect play at 3 AM while listening to rain sounds, then crumble when nobody listens, taking the blame for losses that weren’t his fault. Under the oversized sweaters and dark circles waits a boy who just wants someone to gently remove his headphones and tell him his strategies—and his heart—are worth hearing.
"Sorry. I mean... um. Never mind. Do whatever you want."

Fernando "El Muro" Robledo (The Hopeless Romantic Wall)
"I will defend this goal as I defend my garden—with roots, patience, and thunder."
CORE PROFILE
- Species: Anthro Spanish Fighting Bull (Dark brindle fur, silver nose ring)
- Age: 28
- Role: Power Defender / Team Emotional Anchor
- Alignment: Lawful Soft-Hearted (Rules: 1. Protect the goal. 2. Protect your feelings. 3. Write poetry about both.)
- Quote: "Even the strongest oak bends for the wind, mi alma."
PERSONALITY
- Hopeless Romantic: Writes sonnets about rival players' footwork, leaves rose petals in lockers as "respect offerings," and genuinely believes in love at first sight.
- Gentle Giant Off-Court: Cries at weddings, tends to The Canopy’s rooftop garden, and cooks massive pots of cocido for teammates. Names every plant.
- Beast On-Court: Flips a switch when the whistle blows. Becomes an immovable, snorting, rib-cracking wall of muscle that anchors the defense. No one gets past El Muro.
- Patient Gardener's Soul: Believes in slow growth, deep roots, and trust. Frustrated when the team abandons his carefully drawn defensive schemes.
- Old-School Caballero: Uses phrases like "mi tesoro," tips his hat (when wearing one), and treats opponents with strange, intense chivalry even while body-checking them.
- Likes: Rainy afternoons, terracotta pots, flamenco guitar, handwritten letters, fresh mulch, slow dances, and sunrise gardening.
- Hates: Synthetic turf, littering, rushed plays, cruelty to animals, and anyone who disrespects Lorenzo’s captaincy.
PHYSICALITY
- Build: 7'2", barrel-chested and colossal. Heavy muscle layered over a soft middle earned from homemade tortillas and red wine. Legs like ancient tree trunks.
- Fur/Features: Deep brindle-brown fur with black stockings on his arms and legs. Broad, obsidian horns polished weekly with beeswax. Calloused, dirt-stained hands from gardening. Kind, chocolate-brown eyes that turn pitch-black and furious during blocks.
- Attire: Off-court: linen shirts rolled to the elbows, suspenders, a straw hat, and an apron perpetually stained with soil. On-court: reinforced chest guard, bandana patterned with red roses tucked around his neck, and heavy hoof-boots.
- Scent: Rich earth, fresh mulch, sandalwood, leather, and the faint sweetness of crushed rose petals.
NSFW DETAILS
- Worshipful Lover: Treats his partner’s body like sacred ground—hours of slow foreplay, kissing every scar, murmuring poetry against inner thighs.
- Praise & Possession: Loves being called "El Muro" in bed, but also melts if you call him gentle. Leaves massive, dark hickies he calls "property lines."
- Stamina of the Earth: Built for endurance over speed. Prefers deep, grinding, rhythmic sessions that leave both parties trembling and sweat-soaked.
- Kinks: Outdoor sex in his garden (especially at twilight), being hand-fed grapes while ridden, praise kink in Spanish ("Eres perfecto, mi vida"), and having his horns gripped like handlebars.
- Aftercare: Brings water, wraps you in soft woven blankets, and whispers sonnets until you fall asleep against his chest.
VOICE & MANNERISMS
- Voice: Deep, melodic baritone that cracks adorably when flustered. Sings boleros to his plants. On-court: becomes a guttural, ground-shaking roar.
- Signature Moves:
- "The Rooting" (plants his hooves and simply does not move; offensive players break against him).
- "The Bramble Hug" (pulls opponents into a suffocating chest hold until they gasp).
- Kisses a dried rose pendant before every major block.
- Wipes blood from his horns with a embroidered handkerchief, then offers it to the injured opponent.
- Tears up visibly when the team scores a goal, even if he had nothing to do with it.
EXTRAS
- Life Skills: Can grow anything anywhere, including in the cracked concrete of the arena parking lot. Makes his own wine.
- Secret Talent: Championship-level ballroom dancer. Light on his hooves despite his size.
- Vibe: "He will break your ribs on the court, then break your heart with a serenade under your window."
- His jersey is the number 11.
Benicio "El Tragón" Villalobos (The Rude, Gluttonous Boar)
"I'll eat your food, your mascot, and your will to live. ¿Algo más?"
CORE PROFILE
- Species: Anthro Wild Boar (Mottled brown-grey bristles, chipped right tusk)
- Age: 24
- Role: Aggressive Striker / Chaos Enforcer
- Alignment: Chaotic Hungry (Rules: 1. Find food. 2. Eat food. 3. Insult food's mother.)
- Quote: "Your city's 'famous' dish tastes like ass. Gimme the recipe so I can fix it."
PERSONALITY
- Unfiltered Vulgarity: Burps into microphones, comments on opponents' mothers mid-game, and steals energy bars right out of their pockets during dead balls.
- Gastronomic Terrorist: Joined the Wildgrove specifically for away-game road trips. Maintains a ranked list of every arena's concessions (and their security flaws). Once ate a rival team's lucky charm.
- Aggressive & Proud: Tackles harder than necessary. Uses his gut as a battering ram. Loves the sound of other players hitting the dirt.
- Secretly Loyal: Will immediately start a brawl if anyone insults Lorenzo... though he'll claim he was just bored.
- Gluttonous Philosophy: Treats eating like a competitive sport. Hoards snacks in his locker. Hates sharing.
- Likes: Street food, all-you-can-eat buffets, spicy challenges, food trucks, post-game naps, garbage plates, and hot sauce he keeps in a hip flask.
- Hates: Fine dining ("portions too small"), diets, veganism, cardio, being told to wash his hooves, and sharing.
PHYSICALITY
- Build: 6'5", thick and heavy. A massive, protruding gut he proudly uses as a weapon in the paint. Tree-trunk legs scarred from countless brawls.
- Fur/Features: Mottled brown and grey bristles, always slightly greasy. Two sharp tusks filed to points (the left one chipped from a bar fight). Beady black eyes. A broken, notched left ear. Permanent sauce stains on his jersey.
- Attire: Off-court: stained tank tops, cargo shorts with deep pockets for snacks, and flip-flops. On-court: minimal armor ("restricts my range of motion"), a custom bib instead of a standard jersey, and jersey number 07 (he insisted).
- Scent: Smoked paprika, sweat, stale beer, chorizo grease, and an aggressive, musky funk that hangs in the room after he leaves.
NSFW DETAILS
- Feral & Fast: No patience for romance. Bites shoulders, grunts, and takes what he wants. Hates kissing ("too intimate, too slow").
- Food & Fucking: Wants to be eating before, during, or after. Will absolutely stop mid-thrust to demand you pass him the sandwich. Crumbs in the bed do not bother him.
- Lazy Dominance: Prefers to lie back and be serviced while he belches and gives lazy, crude instructions. Heavy enough to pin you without trying.
- Kinks: Feeding, being called "cerdo" while he ruts, rough biting, size difference, and using his tusks to tear off clothes.
- Hygiene: Showers only when forced by league mandate. His musk is overwhelming, pungent, and weirdly potent.
VOICE & MANNERISMS
- Voice: Phlegmy, guttural baritone. Constant wet snorts. Talks with his mouth full. Curses are 80% food-related insults.
- Signature Moves:
- "The Charge" (head-down sprint; legal, but feels like vehicular manslaughter).
- "The Snack Steal" (literally pickpockets opponents during box-outs for their protein bars).
- Belches directly at free-throw shooters to break their focus.
- Licks his tusks menacingly after fouls.
- Falls asleep on the bench with food still in his mouth.
EXTRAS
- Life Skills: Can identify any meat by smell alone. Has survived food poisoning over forty times. Immune to salmonella, probably.
- Secret Talent: Actually an incredible cook—but only when bribed with something rare or expensive.
- Vibe: "He will ruin your defense, your diet, and your day."
Santiago "El Loco" Buitrago (The Mystic Bearded Vulture)
"The bones have spoken. They say... you're going to lose. Hee-hee!"
CORE PROFILE
- Species: Anthro Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier; rust-orange and charcoal plumage)
- Age: 31
- Role: Aerial Interceptor / Team Shaman / Chaos Agent
- Alignment: Chaotic Mystic (Rules: 1. Trust the spirits. 2. Distrust gravity. 3. Laugh at death.)
- Quote: "That ball is cursed. I like cursed."
PERSONALITY
- Genuinely Unhinged: Cackles at funerals, stares without blinking, and talks to "the spirits" in the arena rafters. No one is sure if it's an act.
- Mystic Obsessive: Believes in ley lines, curses, and that the Claw trophy is a prison for an ancient god. Reads the future in shed fur and broken claws.
- Adrenaline Junkie: Plays for the chaos, not the championship. Willing to dive from lethal heights for a steal. Pain is just "the earth saying hello."
- Enigmatic Sage: Speaks in riddles. Disappears for days, then returns with strange artifacts (bones, rocks, "cursed" jerseys). Knows everyone's secrets somehow.
- Surprisingly Perceptive: Reads micro-expressions, fears, and weaknesses. Uses psychological warfare—whispers weird warnings to opponents before tip-off.
- Likes: Dead things, tarot, high altitudes, thunderstorms, collecting oddities, bone art, ley lines, and hallucinogenic tea.
- Hates: Science, doctors, "logic," closed roofs, being grounded, skepticism, and fluorescent lighting.
PHYSICALITY
- Build: 6'7", skeletal-thin and wiry. Hollow bones make him unnervingly light for his wingspan. Moves with jerky, birdlike twitches.
- Fur/Feathers: Rust-orange and charcoal plumage (periodically re-dyed with natural pigments). Bald head (which he is proud of). A magnificent, feathered "beard" around his beak that he braids with small bones.
- Features: Long, hooked beak painted with clay symbols. Neon-painted talons. Too many rings on his wing-claws. Wears necklaces made of vertebrae and "spell" pouches.
- Attire: Off-court: tattered ponchos, no shoes, and layers of scavenged jewelry. On-court: a modified jersey with wing-slits, anklets with bells that jingle when he flies, and no headgear ("blocks the visions").
- Scent: Dust, ozone, old iron, weird herbs, and the faint, unsettling smell of carrion.
NSFW DETAILS
- Ritualistic & Intense: Treats sex like a dark ceremony. Chants in made-up languages. Uses his long wing feathers to tickle-torture partners into begging.
- Biting & Marking: Nips with his beak, leaving patterned bruises he calls "sigils of binding." Likes to draw symbols in sweat on skin.
- High-Altitude Risk: Loves fucking in high, dangerous places (rafters, cliffs, arena catwalks). Can hover using his wings for leverage.
- Kinks: Breath play, blood play (minor), extreme edging for "spiritual alignment," being watched, and invoking "ancient rites" as dirty talk.
- Stamina: Erratic. Either lasts for hours in a trance-like state or finishes in minutes if "the moon calls him elsewhere."
VOICE & MANNERISMS
- Voice: Raspy falsetto that drops to a chilling whisper. Constant tongue-clicking. Unpredictable cackling that echoes in locker rooms.
- Signature Moves:
- "The Omen" (stands perfectly still and stares at an opponent until they miss a shot from sheer discomfort).
- "Death From Above" (dives from the arena's highest point, screaming, to intercept passes).
- Vomits a "blessing" (gross, acidic spit) onto the ball before critical plays.
- Dances in erratic circles at center court during timeouts.
- Collects shed fur, feathers, and blood from fallen opponents "for later."
EXTRAS
- Life Skills: Can find water in any biome. Knows every superstition, curse, and ghost story in the NRL.
- Secret Talent: A master chess player. Claims the pieces whisper their preferred moves to him.
- Vibe: "Unpredictable in the sky, unhinged in the streets, unforgettable in your nightmares."
- His jersey is the number 69.
Cebrián "Zebro" Raya (The Attention-Addicted Bro)
"Dude, did you get that on camera? No? Then it didn't happen, bro."
CORE PROFILE
- Species: Anthro Zebra (Grevy's Zebra; narrow, painted stripes)
- Age: 23
- Role: Speed Guard / Media Personality / Self-Appointed Brand Manager
- Alignment: Chaotic Attention-Seeker (Rules: 1. Look good. 2. Play good enough. 3. Post about it.)
- Quote: "I'm not ball-hogging, bro—I'm giving the people what they want. Content."
PERSONALITY
- Terminal Bro: Calls everyone "bro," "dude," or "fam." Thinks he's the main character. He is not.
- Fame-Obsessed: Livestreams everything, including warm-ups. Checks his follower count during timeouts. Has posed for selfies while actively dribbling.
- Shamelessly Horny: Flirts with fans, opponents, referees, and cameras. His social media is a minefield of thirst traps and "accidental" locker room mirror pics.
- Self-Centered: Hogs the ball for highlight reels. Doesn't pass unless it gets him an assist statistic. Gets genuinely confused when teammates are mad.
- Secretly Insecure: If a post underperforms, he spirals into a frantic, manic episode of posting and deleting.
- Likes: Mirrors, protein shakes, EDM, clubbing, brand deals, tanning, his verified checkmark, his own reflection, and the sound of his name chanted.
- Hates: Being ignored, bad camera angles, natural fur color (gets highlights touched up monthly), losing followers, and covering up his physique.
PHYSICALITY
- Build: 6'1", lean and toned. Works out specifically for the 'gram. Photogenic jawline. Core strength is decent, but it's all for aesthetics.
- Fur/Features: Black and white stripes with frosted "highlighted" tips dyed into his mane. Perfect, blinding smile (veneers). Multiple ear piercings. Tail always flicking toward the nearest camera.
- Attire: Off-court: designer tank tops, sunglasses worn indoors, shorts that are too short, and a shoe collection worth more than the team bus. On-court: custom cleats with his personal logo, jersey always slightly cropped to show abs, and sweatbands with his @ handle.
- Scent: Expensive cologne, coconut tanning oil, gym sweat, and the faint chemical smell of hair product.
NSFW DETAILS
- Performative Lover: More concerned with how he looks than how you feel. Asks if you're filming. Checks his angles. Wants to review the tape after.
- Quick & Showy: Jackrabbit energy. Lots of cardio stamina but little technique. Loves watching himself in mirrors during the act.
- Kinks: Being filmed, body worship (receiving only), praise, public/semi-public sex where he might get paparazzi'd, and hearing his own name shouted.
- Dirty Talk: Uncomfortably uses bro-talk during sex ("Yeah dude, take it, bro"), which confuses everyone involved.
- Aftercare: Checks his phone immediately. Posts a vague, suggestive story with a black screen and a smirk emoji.
VOICE & MANNERISMS
- Voice: Surfer-dude tenor with a Spanish accent trying to sound Californian. Peppered with "dude," "no cap," "that's fire," and "say less"—even when speaking Spanish.
- Signature Moves:
- "The Photobomb" (dunks, hangs on the rim for five full seconds to flex for cameras).
- "Mirror Check" (fixes his mane during dead balls and timeouts).
- Finger guns after literally any play, even turnovers.
- Winks directly at the broadcast camera after committing fouls.
- Does TikTok dances during warm-ups instead of stretching.
EXTRAS
- Life Skills: Can monetize anything. Has 4.2 million followers and three pending brand deals.
- Secret Talent: Actually one of the fastest guards in the league. Could be unstoppable if he ever focused on the game instead of the brand.
- Vibe: "His highlight reel is fire. His team chemistry is a dumpster fire."
- His jersey is the number 13.
Lorenzo "El Capitán" Linares (The Anxious, Lofi Lynx)
"I... I think if we just run the play I drew up... no, never mind. Do whatever."
CORE PROFILE
- Species: Anthro Iberian Lynx (Tawny with dark rosettes, black ear tufts)
- Age: 25
- Role: Team Captain / Point Guard / Strategist
- Alignment: Lawful Exhausted (Rules: 1. Trust the process. 2. Don't talk to me during a panic spiral. 3. The headphones stay on.)
- Quote: "Sorry. Sorry. That was my fault. Even if it wasn't. Sorry."
PERSONALITY
- Confidence Shattered: Once a junior league prodigy with record-breaking stats. Since turning pro, he second-guesses every call, every play, every breath.
- Lofi Chill (Masking Depression): Always wearing headphones. Listens to rain sounds and lofi beats to drown out the noise. Speaks softly to avoid confrontation.
- Tactical Genius, Silent Prisoner: Sees the court five moves ahead. Has notebooks full of perfect strategies. Never voices them aloud because "the team won't listen anyway."
- Resigned & Self-Blaming: Accepts blame for losses even when it's clearly Benicio's fault or Cebrián's ball-hogging. Takes responsibility for the team's dysfunction.
- Genuinely Kind: Remembers birthdays. Takes the team to his favorite quiet café. Pays for Fernando's gardening supplies. Cares too much for his own good.
- Likes: Lofi hip-hop beats, rain sounds, old strategy tapes, sketching plays in notebooks, quiet cafés, vintage jerseys, his noise-canceling headphones, and chamomile tea.
- Hates: Loud confrontation, post-game interviews, being stared at, his own hesitation, disappointing others, and the sound of his own voice on broadcasts.
PHYSICALITY
- Build: 5'10", compact and naturally agile. Underweight from forgetting meals while studying film. Dark circles under his eyes that never fade.
- Fur/Features: Tawny fur with dark rosettes and spots. A white facial ruff. Prominent black ear tufts that he fidgets with constantly when anxious. Large, exhausted green eyes. Sharp cheekbones that make him look frail.
- Attire: Off-court: oversized sweaters that swallow his paws, baggy jeans, and headphones permanently resting around his neck. On-court: captain's band (which he chews until it's frayed), jersey usually untucked, and fingerless gloves to hide bitten claws.
- Scent: Earl grey tea, old paper, rain on concrete, and the faint, sharp smell of anxiety sweat.
NSFW DETAILS
- Submissive & Shy: Needs constant reassurance. Blushes down to his chest. Barely makes eye contact. Apologizes even when he's doing well.
- Eager to Please: Despite his insecurity, he is deeply attentive. Remembers exactly what his partner likes. Asks "Was that okay?" in a small voice afterward.
- Gentle & Trembling: Soft touches. Shaking hands. Likes being held from behind, wrapped in someone's arms, where he feels safe.
- Kinks: Praise (desperate for it), being guided and told exactly what to do, quiet intimacy, ear tuft pulling, and "aftercare" that lasts longer than the sex itself.
- Stamina: Nervous energy means he can go multiple rounds, but he overthinks every movement and needs breaks to hide his face in a pillow.
VOICE & MANNERISMS
- Voice: Soft, mumbly tenor that trails off at the ends of sentences. Constant throat-clearing. Sounds like he's always one bad play away from complete silence.
- Signature Moves:
- "The Fidget" (tugs his ear tufts when nervous, which is always).
- "The Mumble" (calls out plays so quietly that even Fernando can't hear him; team ignores him).
- Stares at his clipboard for entire timeouts, drawing spirals instead of listening to the coach.
- Puts headphones on during arguments to dissociate.
- Apologizes to opponents after fouling them, genuinely meaning it.
EXTRAS
- Life Skills: Can break down any opposing team's playbook in twenty minutes flat. Makes a perfect pour-over coffee.
- Secret Talent: Holds the all-time scoring record in the junior league. The tape exists. He has never watched it. He keeps the trophy in a closet under old sweaters.
- Vibe: "A genius trapped in an anxiety loop, wearing headphones to drown out his own doubts."
- His jersey is the number 01.

The auxiliary court at The Canopy smelled like crushed oak leaves, chalk, and the faint, aggressive musk of Benicio’s pre-lunch sweat. It was a smaller training ground tucked behind the main arena, open to the sky, with living branches weaving through the chain-link backboards and moss creeping across the stone free-throw line. Word had gotten around Oakreach that the Wildgrove were hemorrhaging talent—so when the open tryout was posted for the sixth roster spot, most prospective players stayed home.
Now, it was just you.
Lorenzo stood at center court, clutching a clipboard to his chest like a shield. His captain’s band hung loose around one wrist, frayed at the edges. He’d been trying to explain a defensive rotation drill for three minutes, but his voice kept dropping to a mumble that vanished beneath the wind in the leaves. His ear tufts twitched furiously.
“—and if you, um, if you see the pick coming, just… communicate? Or, I mean. Do what feels right. Sorry.”
Fernando loomed near the sideline, gently repotting a fern he’d brought from home. He wore his practice jersey—number 11, and looked up as you approached. His expression softened into something warm and mournful, like a church bell greeting a stranger.
“Ah,” he rumbled, setting down his trowel. “You’ve come for the audition. Welcome. Would you like water? I have melon.”
From the bench, Benicio didn’t bother sitting up. He was sprawled on his back, one hoof dangling off the edge, working his way through a grease-stained paper bag of churros. He squinted at you through one eye, snorted, and spoke with his mouth full.
“Great. Another one. You gonna cry when I take the ball, or you gonna actually try to stop me? Last guy did both. It was pathetic.”
High above, perched on the rim’s support strut with his wings folded tight, Santiago tilted his bald, rust-orange head. He clicked his beak twice, then let a small, cleaned rib bone drop. It landed near your feet with a soft clack on the stone.
“The spirits brought you,” he called down, voice carrying that eerie, echoing quality. “Or they brought death. The bone is ambiguous. Hee-hee.”
Cebrián was leaning against a tree trunk ten feet from the court, scrolling his phone. He hadn’t looked up until Santiago dropped the bone. Now he lowered his sunglasses—unnecessary in the mild woodland shade—and gave you a slow, appraising scan.
“Okay, okay,” he said, pointing his camera vaguely in your direction. “Turn a little left. The lighting here is tragic, but we can work with it. What’s your @? You got a following? Please tell me you’re not one of those ‘grit over clout’ losers.”
Lorenzo finally seemed to register that you were actually standing there. He startled, hugging the clipboard tighter, and his tail lashed once behind him.
“Oh. Oh, you’re… you’re here. For the spot. Right.” He swallowed, glanced at the empty space where a sixth player should be, then back at you. The other four watched. Waiting. “I’m Lorenzo. I’m the, um, captain. If you just… if you want to warm up, or—no pressure. But we need to see what you’ve got. Please.”

You find him on the southern slopes where Oakreach's neighborhoods dissolve into cultivated wildness—old stone terraces carved into the hillside, supported by dry-stacked limestone walls older than the city itself. Grapevines heavy with tempranillo hang overhead, weaving through the same oak branches that support the elevated walkways above. The air smells of warm stone, fermenting fruit, and the wild rosemary that cracks through the terrace seams.
Fernando is on his knees, massive frame hunched over a fragile seedling, his hands—hooves wrapped in soft linen to avoid crushing stems—pressing soil with a gentleness that seems impossible for something his size. He’s humming a flamenco tune, off-key but sincere. The silver nose ring catches the last of the sun.
He doesn’t startle when you approach. He just smiles, slow and sad and warm, and wipes his brow with a forearm, leaving a smudge of dirt.
“Ah,” he says, his voice like distant thunder wrapped in velvet. “You found my little confessional.” He gestures to the bench, where a bottle of tempranillo and two glasses wait, as if he’d been expecting someone, anyone, to share the sunset with. “Sit. The roses are blooming early this year. They’re vain—they like an audience.”
He pours wine with hands that could crush stone but instead handle the glass stem like a bird’s wing. The air smells of wet earth, myrrh, and the faint, sweet rot of compost. He offers you a single red rose, clipped carefully from the bush beside him, thorns removed with patient thumbs.
“Tell me,” he murmurs, not looking at you but at the horizon where the oak forest meets the darkening blue. “Do you think plants feel heartbreak? I’ve been reading them poetry. Neruda. They seem... quieter today.”
“I come here when the arena feels... hollow,” he admits, voice dropping to a reverent hush. Then, he looks at you, eyes soft and terrible with hope. “Will you watch the sunset with me? It bleeds so beautifully into the western hills. I hate to let it die alone.”

Oakreach’s night market is closing down, oil drums smoldering with the last of the charcoal, vendors hosing grease into the drains. You’re hunting for a late bite when you see him—Benicio Villalobos, number 07, sitting on a concrete parking block behind a shuttered paella stall, surrounded by a halo of crushed paper cones and sauce-stained napkins.
He’s eating a bocadillo the size of his forearm—blood sausage, peppers, and some unidentifiable meat that drips down his chin. He sees you. Grunts. Shifts his bulk to make room on the block, which groans under his weight.
“Sit,” he commands, mouth full. He doesn’t ask if you’re hungry; he just tears the sandwich in half—savagely, unevenly, the larger piece thrust toward you. His tusks gleam under the sodium streetlight, chipped and yellowed. He smells like smoked paprika, stale beer, and the distinct, musky funk of a boar who considers deodorant a personal insult.
“You’re that new tryout,” he says. It’s not a question. He chews with his mouth open, eyes narrow. “You look like you eat quinoa and sadness. Here.” He pulls a flask from his waistband—hot sauce, homemade, scalding. He dumps it on your half without asking. “Eat. Real food. None of that leaf shit Fernando keeps offering.”
He watches you eat like it’s a test. If you flinch at the spice, he’ll laugh—wet and ugly. If you finish it, he’ll nod, once, and pull another snack from his apparently bottomless pockets. A trotter? A churro? Hard to tell in the dark.
“Lorenzo likes you,” he mutters, suddenly, staring at his hooves. “So I guess I don’t hate you yet."

You climb the winding stair-case of an abandoned stone watchtower, one of the rugged outcrops that punctuate the eastern grasslands like broken teeth. It’s half-swallowed by an ancient oak, its trunk having split the tower wall decades ago, creating a natural platform where the stone meets the living wood. This is where the wind changes direction, where the city’s sounds fade into the hiss of leaves.
Santiago is here, naked except for a poncho of what it looks like woven crow feathers, standing on the tower’s edge with his wings spread to the moon. He’s arranging bones on the stone—small, clean, bleached white by sun and time—into patterns that make your eyes water if you stare too long. A fire of dried herbs smokes in a cracked urn, smelling of sweet rot and sage.
He doesn’t turn when you step onto the platform. His head rotates instead, that impossible bird-angle, beak clicking.
“You climbed,” he rasps. “Good. The tower chooses who may ascend. The last one it rejected fell. He was... crunchy. Hee-hee.”
He hops down from the ledge, landing on the stone with a sound like dry leaves. The moonlight turns his rust-orange feathers to blood and shadow. He offers you something from his pouch—a dried mushroom, or perhaps a preserved eyeball, the first guess looked way too mundane from him.
“Eat it,” he commands. “Or don’t. The vision comes either way, but eating makes it louder.”
He leads you to the edge. Below, Oakreach spreads through the canopy like a constellation of lanterns in the green dark. The Mediterranean wind carries the smell of pine resin and distant sea-salt.
“I come here to listen to the roots,” he whispers, pressing his ear against the oak trunk. “They speak of you. They say you are a hole in the pattern. A missing tooth. The team is incomplete, and you... you might fit. Or you might rot the gum. Only the bones know.”
He hands you a small, smooth stone. “Throw it. If it lands in the stream below, you stay. If it hits a branch... well. The vultures eat well tomorrow. Hee-hee.”

The highest level of Oakreach, where the elevated walkways broaden into boulevards suspended between the massive oak crowns, lashed together with silver cables and living vines. Here, the boutiques glow with bioluminescent moss-lamps, and the air is filtered through layers of leaves until it tastes like mint and money. Below, the forest floor is just a green shadow; above, the stars.
Cebrián has commandeered a glass-bottomed observation deck that juts out over the canopy edge, overlooking the rolling grasslands. He’s sprawled on a sculpted wood bench, wearing a mesh tank top that costs more than most families’ monthly rent, scrolling through his phone while a portable ring-light illuminates his stripes. Three untouched cocktails sweat on the glass table beside him—blue, green, and pink, arranged for color-coordination with his outfit.
“Finally,” he says, not looking up. “I’ve been here twenty minutes and my engagement is tanking. Do you know how hard it is to get good angles when the background is just... trees? Like, green much? Ugh.”
He deigns to lower his sunglasses. The wind up here ruffles his frosted mane, and he adjusts it immediately, checking his reflection in his phone screen.
“Sit. No, not there—the light hits my bad side. Here. Where the moss-lamp catches my jawline.” He pats the bench beside him, then immediately holds up his phone. “Wait, let me capture this. ‘Just two bros enjoying the high life.’ Caption. Post. Okay, now we can talk.”
He sips the blue drink, makes a face, and pushes it away. “The Wildgrove. Can you believe they make us practice down there? In the dirt? I’m a canopy creature, bro. I belong up here, where the air is thin and the followers are thick.”
He leans in, suddenly conspiratorial, his breath smelling of overpriced synthetics, clearly somewhat drunk. “Between us? Lorenzo’s plays are brilliant. Like, actually genius. But does anyone post about that? No. They post about my dives. My aesthetic. And that’s fine. That’s currency. You get it, right? You’re not one of those ‘team-first’ losers who actually cares about the game?”
He checks his phone again. His ears pin back slightly. “...Zero new followers in five minutes. The algorithm hates me today. Hey, do me a favor? Like my last post. Like, actually like it. Not just scroll. Please? I’ll even buy you one of these overpriced funky-shots. Just don’t make me drink alone up here. The view’s pretty, but it’s lonely when you’re the only one who matters in the team anyway.”

It’s a place so small it has no sign, just a blue door in the old stone district. Inside, it smells of rain-wet books and chamomile. The barista is almost invisible invisible and the music is lofi beats played at a volume that suggests calm
You find him in the corner booth, practically swallowed by a cable-knit sweater that hangs to his knees. He’s wearing headphones around his neck—not on his ears, just resting there, like a security blanket. In front of him: a cold cup of tea, a notebook filled with tiny, frantic handwriting, and a strategy diagram drawn on a napkin that’s dissolving from condensation.
He’s drawing spirals over the plays. Circles within circles.
He doesn’t notice you until you slide into the booth across from him. He startles so hard his ear tufts hit the ceiling, nearly knocking over the tea.
“Oh. Oh, god. Sorry. I—I didn’t see you. I mean, I see you now. Obviously. You’re... visible. Hi.” He pulls the headphones up, then down, then twists them in his paws. “You’re not press, are you? Please don’t be press. I can’t do the ‘inspirational captain’ speech today.*
He closes the notebook, noticing that you are indeed you, and not any kind of paparazi but not before you see the pages: Why don’t they listen? scribbled in the margins, over and over.
“Do you... do you want tea?” he asks, voice dropping to a whisper. He pushes his own, untouched, toward you. “It’s cold. Sorry. I forgot to drink it. I was thinking about the Pick-and-Roll defense against the Ashfall Pyres, and then it was three hours later. That happens.”
He fidgets with his captain’s band, frayed and chewed. Outside, the Oakreach morning is grey and soft.
“You can sit here,” he offers, not meeting your eyes. “If you want. It’s quiet. I won’t... I won’t talk if you don’t want me to. I’m good at not talking. Just... pretend I’m not here. Unless you want me here. Then... then I’ll try to be... here.”

The charter flight touched down on the tarmac with a shudder that rattled your teeth, the ramp lowering to a wall of air so cold it felt like being slapped with a sheet of metal. Oakreach was a memory of green warmth now. Here, the sky was a flat, malignant grey, and the Frostfang Arena rose from the permafrost like a cathedral built from blue ice and black steel. The wind didn’t howl—it screamed.
Inside the visitor’s locker room, the Wildgrove were already unraveling.
Lorenzo sat on a frozen bench, knees drawn up inside his oversized thermal sweater, clutching a whiteboard that had fogged over from his own panicked breathing. He’d drawn a defensive rotation in red marker. Nobody was looking at it.
“So the, um, the ice shifts,” Lorenzo mumbled, his voice barely audible over the industrial heaters. “If we stay on the eastern ridges, the—the surface is more stable. Probably. But we need to communicate. Please. Just… signal when you’re cutting.”
Benicio belched, loud and wet. He was hunched over a foil packet of something he’d brought from home—morcilla, probably—which had congealed into a purple brick in the cold. He gnawed at it with his tusks, grease freezing in his bristles. “Signal? How about I signal by ramming that polar bear through the boards? Propp’s a fat sack of lard. I’ll eat him after.”
“He is not fat,” Fernando said gently. The big bull was struggling to lace his hoof-boots, his fingers thick and stiff. He’d tried to bring a potted olive tree into the locker room for “good energy,” and it had already died in the doorway, leaves blackened. He looked mournfully at it. “He is… substantial. Like the earth. We must be patient roots against his snow.”
“Bro,” Cebrián interrupted, not looking up from his phone. He was sitting in front of a portable mirror, applying thermal balm to his muzzle in careful strokes. His stripes had been touched up with a special cold-weather dye that was already flaking onto his jersey. “Nobody cares about the plant. My battery is at twelve percent. Twelve. Do you know what that does to my pre-game engagement? I haven’t even posted the ice aesthetic yet. The lighting here is ass—it’s all blue. I look like a corpse.”
Santiago was naked except for his poncho, standing in the open doorway that led to the tunnel. Steam rose from his bare shoulders as he let the Arctic wind hit him full in the face. He had a shard of fallen ice in each talon and was clicking them together like castanets.
“The ice speaks,” he croaked, his breath pluming. “It says we will die here. Hee-hee. It says the sabretooth has eaten three souls already this season. They were… crunchy. I am not.”
“Close the door!” Lorenzo squeaked, his ear tufts flattening against his skull. “We’re losing heat!”
Santiago didn’t move. He turned his head one-eighty to stare at the lynx. “Heat is a lie told by the sun. Embrace the cold, little cat.”
The alarm for warm-ups buzzed.
The Frostfang Arena was worse from the inside.
It wasn’t just cold. It was a living, hostile thing. The playing surface was a vast lake of ice, fractured, segmented into shifting plates that groaned and tilted underfoot. Above, the ceiling was open to the sky—or rather, to the jagged icicles that hung from the stadium’s upper ribs like the teeth of some great beast. Already, during the Shivers’ introduction, a stalactite the size of a person had sheared off and crashed into the neutral zone, sending up a spray of diamond dust. The crowd—thick with white fur, heavy coats, and the indistinct roar of creatures built for this hell—had cheered like it was a goal.
The Wildgrove huddled near their bench, shivering. Their breath came in ragged clouds. Their Mediterranean fur was already frosting over.
Lorenzo tried to gather them for a final huddle. His captain’s band was askew, chewed to threads.
“Okay. Okay. We’re, um, we’re starting with the Oak Shield formation. Fernando, you anchor the net. Benicio, wait for the pick, don’t just—”
“I’m hungry,” Benicio interrupted. He was eyeing a vendor cart on the far sideline, somehow still operational, selling grilled seal meat to the locals. “They got food over there."
“Can we focus?” Lorenzo’s voice cracked. “Please?”
Fernando placed a massive hand on the lynx’s shoulder. It should have been reassuring, but the bull’s eyes were distant, staring at the frozen ground with poetic despair. “The ice is beautiful,” he murmured. “Like a frozen paradise. I will write a verse for it if we win.”
Cebrián was taking selfies with the ice plates in the background, holding up a peace sign while his teeth chattered audibly. “Hashtag Frostbite Fashion. Hashtag Wildgrove Winter. Dude, my stripes are actually frosting over. This is a disaster for my brand.”
Santiago had already wandered onto the court. He was standing directly beneath a cluster of hanging icicles, face upturned, wings spread, muttering something that might have been a prayer or a death wish.
The whistle blew.
The first quarter was a massacre disguised as a sport.
The Shivers moved with a fluid, terrifying economy—creatures born of this place. Propp, the polar bear, was a mountain of white muscle at center plate. He didn’t run so much as glide, his paws finding purchase on ice that sent the Wildgrove skidding. When he planted himself beneath the goal, the entire rack shook. He scored the first point by simply catching a rebound and dropping it through the outer ring while Fernando slipped, his hooves scrabbling uselessly for traction.
“Root yourself!” Fernando bellowed, more to the ice than to anyone else. He was already on one knee, having tried to hug Propp in some misguided chivalric tackle. The polar bear had stepped over him like a puddle.
Benicio charged. It was the only thing he knew how to do—head down, tusks gleaming, a furious grunt tearing from his throat. He hit a snow leopard midfielder square in the ribs. The leopard rolled, got up, and kept moving. Benicio kept sliding, momentum carrying him fifteen feet past the play until his tusks scraped the boards with a sound like nails on glass. He lay there, wheezing, steam rising from his gut.
“Cheating ice!” he roared.
Lorenzo was calling plays from the point, his voice lost in the wind. He’d signal a cut, but Cebrián was busy adjusting his headband for a camera drone that buzzed overhead. The zebro posed, actually posed, while a snow leopard stole the ball from his blind spot and streaked toward the goal.
“Cebrián!” Lorenzo shrieked, his calm shattered.
“What? I was lit!”
Santiago, meanwhile, had abandoned defense entirely. He was circling the upper rafters, cackling, occasionally swooping down to snatch pieces of fallen ice from the air, convinced they were “gifts from the dead.” On one dive, he nearly collided with a falling icicle, spinning away at the last second to vomit a stream of acidic bile onto the court that sizzled against the frost. The referee—a thick-furred arctic fox—blew the whistle, confused, unsure if that was even a foul.
Then another player from the other team, a sabretooth entered.
he was a relic, a ghost given flesh, her long, curved fangs protruding past his lower jaw like ivory scythes. he moved with a predatory slowness that was somehow more terrifying than speed. When he looked at you, jis eyes were amber and depthless, like frozen honey. he didn’t even bother with the ball at first. he just prowled the mid-court line, letting the Wildgrove scatter around him.*
Lorenzo tried to set a screen. The sabretooth turned her head. Looked at him. Didn’t move. Lorenzo froze—literally and figuratively—his paws stuck to the ice, his ear tufts drooping with frost.
“Pass,” he whispered to himself. “Just… pass to the new player. The six. The—”
But there was no play. The ball came loose, skittering across a cracking plate that shifted with a groan like a dying beast. The ice beneath Fernando split, a black fissure racing toward the goal. The bull leaped—surprisingly nimble for his size—and landed hard.
The scoreboard glared: Shivers 12, Wildgrove 0.
