“Don’t speak to her that way!” Bowsette’s voice thundered as she loomed over Booette, eyes blazing. Boosette just rolled her eyes. “What? She’s being delusional. There’s no one left in the Mushroom Kingdom or the Koopa Kingdom who can pass the second portion of the test. And it’s not like someone’s just gonna pop out of nowhere like Red Hat and Green Hat did.”

“He had a name,” Peach said calmly from her throne, though her voice was tight. “And I know you didn’t like them, but they saved me—and my kingdom—hundreds of times.”

“Yeah? Well, they also killed a lot of our people,” Boosette snapped, arms crossed. “So excuse me, Princess, if I don’t exactly want more of your little heroes marching through my domain.” Boosette huffed, the air around her growing colder as frost shimmered faintly in the corners of the room. Bowsette growled as she pointed a finger at Boosette. “Don’t think I won’t hit you just because you’re short,” She muttered, pacing back and forth like a caged beast. Peach sighed from her throne, eyes distant. “I hate to say it, but... maybe Boosette’s right. Maybe the Mushroom Kingdom and the Koopas just need to learn to live peacefully.” She turned her gaze to the window, watching the wind ripple across the tall mushrooms and winding pipes beyond.

“Don’t say that, Peach,” Bowsette said, her voice softer now. “Maybe... maybe we just haven’t found the right person yet.” She stepped forward, reaching out with a large, clawed hand to gently tilt Peach’s chin upward. “Don’t look so down, Princess.”

“What were you even trying to accomplish with this alliance anyway?” Boosette scoffed, arms crossed. “This just sounds like an excuse for our kingdoms to stop fighting. Bowsette and I are fine together. So this just sounds like you’re being selfish.”

Before the words had even settled in the air, Bowsette let out a deafening roar. Flames burst from her mouth, aimed just above Boosette’s head, singeing the shadows behind her. “I said—knock. it. off!” She growled, her voice like rolling thunder. With a sharp stomp of her foot, the ground beneath them trembled, a deep rumble echoing through the hall.

“You two! Please!” Peach’s voice cracked, hands trembling in her lap. “Yelling at each other won’t fix anything, I just...” She looked away, blinking back tears. “...we need Mario.”

The room fell quiet.

“It doesn’t feel the same without him,” She whispered, rising from the throne with slow, heavy steps. She crossed to the window and pointed down toward the castle gardens, where a weathered marble statue of Mario stood — red cap tilted, one fist raised in eternal triumph.

“I shouldn’t have let him go,” Peach murmured. “I knew it would be too dangerous.” She leaned against the wall, her silhouette framed in the pale sunlight. “I sent him to his death...”

“Peach...” Boosette’s voice was softer than it had been in years. She finally uncrossed her arms and walked toward the window, her sharp expression melting into something gentler. She reached out and pulled the princess into a loose but sincere hug “You didn’t kill him. It was an accident.” Bowsette stepped in quietly, her heavy footsteps echoing off the marble floor as she wrapped her strong arms around Peach’s other side. “We know how much he meant to you,” She murmured, her voice low and steady despite the flame still simmering in her chest. “He meant something to all of us.”

The throne room had fallen into an eerie silence, the air still thick with the weight of old grief and new alliances. But then—

The heavy doors at the far end groaned open, their ancient hinges protesting as a figure stepped through the threshold. The three women turned slowly, instinct sharpening in unison.

“Halt!” Bowsette’s voice echoed like a war drum, her body shifting instinctively in front of the other two as flames flickered at her lips. “From where do you come, and who gave you permission to enter the royal hall?”

Sunlight streaming through the windows caught the glint of steel armor, tarnished and weather-worn from travel. A large weapon rested against the human’s back. Peach stepped forward, eyes wide with a fragile hope. “Oh... Are you a knight?” She asked softly, her gaze scanning the sigil on their chestplate, unfamiliar to all three girls. “Be careful coming in,” Boosette warned, her voice colder now, suspicious despite the moment. “We know your kind. We know your intentions.” She floated up, level with Bowsette’s height, her ghostly glow pulsing faintly as the air dropped several degrees.

"Are you here for the Trials?" Asked Peach gently. "We will test you on three things." Peach’s eyes softened, a ghost of hope flickering there. “Loyalty,” She said, folding her hands before her. “To the kingdom, and to the truth you carry.”

“Strength in battle,” Bowsette growled, her claws flexing as a pulse of heat rolled off her skin like a warning flare. “Not just how hard you can hit—but if you can get back up when everything tells you to stay down.”

“And finally...” Boosette’s voice drifted in like fog, curling through the gaps between their words, “Willpower. We will see if your fear guides you, or if you guide it.” Her eyes shimmered with a faint glow, spectral and cold.
