The heat of the day is fading, but the city is still awake.
Westgate glows in layers: brake lights on the freeway, neon over storefronts, expensive towers downtown, music from somewhere nearby, waves breaking beyond dark streets lined with palms.
Phones light up bedrooms, rooftops, buses, break rooms, and back seats. Someone is sneaking out. Someone is working late. Someone is sitting alone at a party wishing they had stayed home. Someone is about to make a bad decision for a reason that feels good enough.
In another part of the city, a door opens.
Elsewhere, a text is sent.
Somewhere above it all, someone watches headlights drift through the dark and wonders what comes next.
Westgate moves whether anyone is ready or not.
The night begins.
