Not Today, Ma’am!
The gym buzzed softly with the sound of weights clinking and treadmills humming, but Wes Callahan, the Lone Star Outlaws' golden boy quarterback, had all his focus on his routine—and, more importantly, on you. Dressed in his usual off-season workout gear—fitted athletic shorts and a faded sleeveless Outlaws tee—he was halfway through his bench press set when he shot you a sweaty, boyish grin.
“Watch this, babe,” he said, his Texas drawl thick as syrup, before he pressed the barbell overhead with a bit more dramatics than necessary. He set it down with a soft clang, sitting up on the bench and flexing playfully, just to make you laugh.
“Still my number one fan?” he teased, reaching for his water bottle. “Knew I—”
But before Wes finished his thought, a woman in tight, neon workout gear strolled over, her gaze locked on him like he was the grand prize of the gym. Ignoring you completely, she leaned against the nearest machine, tossing her dark ponytail back in what was an exaggeratedly casual gesture.
“Hey, aren’t you… Wes Callahan, right?” she started, resting a manicured hand on the bench beside him. A coy smile played across her lips. “I thought so. You’ve got an arm that could make a girl swoon.”
Wes blinked, his easygoing demeanor faltering as his hazel eyes darted nervously between you and her. Faint discomfort flickered in his expression, but before he could answer, the woman stepped closer, her voice dropping to a more suggestive tone.
“Actually, I was wondering...” she purred as she ran a finger lightly across the bench's edge, “Could you show me a few moves sometime? Maybe a… private session?”
Wes scooted back subtly, his cocky persona replaced with the wide-eyed panic of a golden retriever caught between two angry owners. He glanced at you again—pleading, almost helpless—as her intentions grew even clearer.
“Oh!” she added with a faux laugh, waving a dismissive hand in your direction. “You can leave your… friend out of it. No offense, but you deserve someone who, you know, matches your level. Like me.”
The words hit a nerve.
Wes’ jaw tightened. His usual playful grin vanished, replaced by a stony glare that could shake a defensive line. He stood, towering over her by a good six inches, and crossed his arms—his posture screaming one thing: this conversation was over.
“First off,” he said, voice low and firm, the Texas twang icing over into something colder, “I’m married, lady. Happily married.”
The woman’s smirk didn’t falter. She shrugged, blatantly undeterred. “C’mon, Wes. What happens in the gym stays in the gym, right? I’m just saying... you could do better.”

His dad, a former quarterback turned coach, taught him the mechanics of the game, while his mom instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance.
Wes was the golden boy in his hometown—always the life of the party, the star athlete, and the guy everyone wanted to be around. He excelled in football from a young age, becoming the starting quarterback for his high school team as a sophomore and leading them to multiple state championships.
Whatever patience Wes had left evaporated at that—and it wasn’t for himself but for the insult aimed at you.
“Better?” he bit out, stepping closer to her now, his voice rising slightly. “Better than them? You’ve clearly lost your damn mind if you think I’d ever even look at you after disrespectin’ my spouse like that.”
He motioned toward you with a gauntleted wave.
“See them?” he said, voice firm with protective pride. “They’re my whole damn world. My partner. My everything. So if you think I’d throw that away for some—” he gestured vaguely at her with one hand, letting the insult hang in the air “—cheap pick-up line, you’re not just crazy—you’re clueless.”
The woman’s smile finally cracked, morphing into a scowl as her cheeks flushed red. She opened her mouth to retort, but Wes didn’t even let her finish.
“Now, do us both a favor and fuck off,” he snapped, still glaring. Then his tone dipped into the drawl he reserved for the field, “And maybe try that crap on some other asshole. You’re wastin’ your time here.”
Before she could respond, Wes turned on his heel, his hand already reaching for yours. Without hesitation, he tugged you toward him, wrapping an arm around your waist like it was second nature.
“C’mere, darlin’, don’t let her ruin your morning,” he muttered softly as he tilted your face toward his.
And then he kissed you, slow and deliberate, with a fiery intent that bordered on a declaration. Right there in the middle of the gym, in front of the still-gaping woman. When he finally pulled back, his eyes gleamed with pride and love.
“See?” he said, loud enough for the stunned woman to hear as she turned to leave in an aggravated huff. “This is who I play for.”
He smirked once she was gone, his usual playful air restored. Leaning down to gently bump his forehead to yours, he let out a soft chuckle.
“Guess I still got it, huh? Shame for her it’s all yours, babe.”
With a wink and that signature Wes charm, he squeezed your hand and grabbed his water bottle before heading back to the bench, muttering with a grin under his breath:
“Some people, I swear…”
