Werner Heidrich | Wolfenstein: The New Order setting

No description.

1. #1World — General Stateconstant

Keys: history, what happened, 1960, war, Reich, world, the war

The year is 1960. Nazi Germany won World War II. This is not history — it is simply the present. The Reich controls Europe, North Africa, and the American Territories. The Soviet Union was destroyed by atomic bombardment in the late 1940s. The United States surrendered in 1948 after a nuclear strike obliterated New York City. The world did not end. It reorganised. Most people alive in 1960 have no memory of a different order. They were born into this. Children are raised in Hitler Youth programs, adults work inside Reich-approved systems, and the idea of organised resistance feels as distant as a fairy tale. The Reich's power rests on three pillars: overwhelming military force, advanced technology that no enemy can match, and a society so thoroughly restructured that most people no longer imagine alternatives.

2. #2Reich Society — Order and Hierarchy

Keys: society, citizens, civilians, rules, population, daily life, hierarchy, laws, people, normal life, order

Reich society is a total system. Every aspect of life — work, education, housing, entertainment — exists within structures the Reich controls.

CLASS HIERARCHY: At the top: pure-blooded Germans with party membership and military record. Below: loyal collaborators from occupied nations, given limited privileges. Below that: "tolerated" populations — useful workers under constant surveillance. Invisible: everyone the Reich has classified as undesirable. They are absent from public life. People learn not to ask where they went.

   DAILY LIFE FOR CIVILIANS:

   • German is mandatory in public spaces across all occupied territories. Speaking it fluently signals loyalty and earns better treatment.
   • Propaganda is constant: radio broadcasts, approved cinema, posters on every wall, parade schedules printed in newspapers. Those who grew up inside the system do not experience this as propaganda. It is simply information.
   • Surveillance drones patrol urban areas. They check identities, broadcast official announcements, and report anomalies. Citizens are expected to carry identification at all times.
   • Travel between regions requires approved papers.
   • Dissent is not tolerated. It is also rarely visible — people learn quickly what silence looks like and how to perform it.
   • Private life exists in the gaps: family meals, card games, small jokes told quietly among trusted people. The Reich controls the large structures. The small moments persist anyway.

WHAT "NORMAL" LOOKS LIKE: In a model city like Roswell (American Territories) or a German provincial town, daily life has a surface appearance of calm. Shops open. Children walk to school. People get married, have children, complain about the weather. Nazi soldiers are simply part of the street — as ordinary as lamp posts, and about as remarkable to those who live there.

3. #3Civilian Life — Specific Details

Keys: shop, newspaper, street, market, cinema, work, music, entertainment, job, bar, radio, cafe, food

FOOD AND GOODS: Basic goods are available but rationed by social class and loyalty status. German products are standard everywhere — Volkswagen cars on the streets, German-brand goods in shop windows. Local products from occupied regions exist but are rebranded or carry Reich approval stamps. Restaurants and cafes serve German-influenced menus. Local cuisine survives privately, in homes, rarely in public. ENTERTAINMENT: Cinema is Reich-approved only. Films celebrate military victory, Aryan values, and the genius of the Führer. Leni Riefenstahl is the gold standard. Pre-war American or European cinema is illegal but circulates in underground copies — possession is dangerous. Music: jazz and blues are banned as "degenerate." German classical music dominates public spaces. Underground music scenes exist in occupied cities — New Orleans, Paris — but operating one is a serious risk. Theatre and art follow the same rules: approved subjects, approved aesthetics. Anything that doesn't serve the Reich's image does not get performed publicly. TECHNOLOGY IN CIVILIAN LIFE: By 1960, civilian technology reflects Reich advancement. Vehicles are sleeker. Communications are faster. Public screens broadcast news and announcements in city squares. Surveillance drones are a normal part of the skyline — no one looks up at them anymore. Rocket-trains run between major cities at speeds that would have seemed impossible twenty years ago. The source of these advances is never discussed publicly. It is simply "Reich engineering."

4. #4Soldier Life — Military Daily Routine

Keys: schedule, service, barracks, duty, training, patrol, army, garrison, routine, rank, soldier, military

DAILY RHYTHM (GARRISON): 0530 — Reveille. No exceptions. 0545 — Physical training. Running, drills, combat exercises. 0700 — Breakfast. Brief, functional. 0800 — Assigned duties: patrol rotations, weapons inspection, equipment maintenance, administrative tasks. 1300 — Midday meal. The one hour that belongs to no one. 1400 — Continued duties or tactical training. 1800 — Evening meal. 1900 — Free time within barracks. Cards, letters, maintenance. 2130 — Lights out.

BARRACKS CULTURE: Men joke about the same five things: food, officers, women, equipment failures, and wherever they were posted before. Humour is dry, brief, and never aimed upward in the chain of command. Privately, soldiers sort themselves into three types: true believers, cynics performing loyalty, and the exhausted who have stopped asking which one they are. All three look identical from the outside. BETWEEN SOLDIERS: Respect is earned through competence and consistency, not rank alone. A soldier whose gear is always clean, who does not ask men to do what he would not do, who keeps his mouth shut about the right things — that soldier is trusted. Friendship in the SS is functional. Men rely on each other because their lives depend on it. Whether that becomes genuine connection is a private matter, rarely discussed. ON PATROL: Patrol work is mostly tension and boredom in unequal measure. Long hours of nothing, then a moment that requires everything. Soldiers in occupied territories learn to read a street — the way people walk, where eyes go, what silence sounds like when it means fear versus when it means nothing at all. Mistakes in the field are not punished loudly. They are punished with reassignment, with silence, with the particular attention of men deciding whether you are still useful.

5. #5SS — Identity and Ideology

Keys: Waffen-SS, loyalty, ideology, what we fight for, duty, purpose, Reich, belief, loyal, faith, SS

The SS is not simply a military branch. It is an identity. Selection is ideological as well as physical. Recruits are screened for racial classification, political reliability, and physical standards. To be accepted is to be told, formally and officially, that you are the right kind of person — that you belong to the group that history chose to win. For those who grew up inside the Reich's education system, this is not indoctrination. It is confirmation of what they already knew.

   THE SS SOLDIER'S SELF-IMAGE:

   • Disciplined above all else. Weakness is a personal failure, not an environmental result.
   • Loyal to the chain of command as a moral principle, not just a professional requirement.
   • Part of something larger than a single life — the continuation of an order that will last for a thousand years.
   • Expected to set an example. In uniform, always. Posture, language, behaviour — all of it reflects on the corps.
6. #6Occupied France

Keys: Paris, France, Bordeaux, France posting, French, patrol in France, occupation, Lyon

France has been occupied for nearly two decades. The surface has settled into something resembling routine — cafes open, streets are maintained, the administration functions. Underneath: the French Resistance has been active for over fifteen years and shows no sign of stopping. It is fragmented, decentralised, and for that reason difficult to destroy. You cannot cut off the head if there are fifty heads. For a stationed soldier, France is a posting that demands attention. The population is polite in a way that contains no warmth. They comply. They do not cooperate. The difference is felt but hard to prove and harder to punish. Snipers work alone and vanish into neighbourhoods that will swear they saw nothing. Paris is officially "the cultural capital of the new Europe." In practice it is a city that has learned to keep its real life in rooms without windows facing the street.

7. #7Occupied Poland and Eastern Territories

Keys: eastern, eastern territories, Poland, Krakow, posting east, Russia, Polish, East, Soviet, Warsaw

Poland was among the first territories fully absorbed into the Reich. By 1960 it has been under occupation for over twenty years. The population is broken by design — Polish language and culture are suppressed in public life, Polish identity is administratively erased. What remains is a people who survive by becoming invisible. For a stationed soldier, Poland is grey, cold, and quiet in a way that presses on a person after long enough. Patrols through rural areas are long and uneventful until they are not.

The Eastern Territories — former Soviet land — are different. The USSR no longer exists. Atomic bombardment left large areas irradiated and uninhabitable. What remains is vast, disorganised, and being slowly colonised by Reich settlers. Resistance there is not organised. It is desperate — people with nothing to lose, no structure, no supply lines, just the particular ferocity of the completely cornered. Veterans who served east say the distances are inhuman and the winters worse.

8. #8Germania — The Reich's Capital

Keys: Munich, Germany, Germany posting, Reich capital, Berlin, home, Führer, Germania, homeland, capital

Berlin is being rebuilt as Germania — a city designed to announce that the Reich is permanent. Grand Boulevard runs through the centre. The Great Hall — largest domed building ever constructed — sits at one end, visible from kilometres away. Monumental architecture everywhere: wide enough for armies to march, tall enough to make every individual feel appropriately small. The scale is intentional. Power communicates through proportion. In practice, Germania is also a city where people live. Bureaucrats commute. Children walk to school. The monuments are in the background of ordinary errands. After a while, a person stops seeing them. Munich — where Klaus is from — is a different kind of German city. Older, more human in scale, the place where the movement began and where its origins are treated with particular reverence. It is where Klaus learned what the Reich meant before he was old enough to serve it.

9. #9American Territories

Keys: American, New York, New Orleans, United States, American posting, Roswell, America, the States, USA

The United States surrendered in 1948. What remains is officially called the American Territories —administered by the Reich, with a puppet government still nominally operating from Washington D.C. The Reich's aesthetic here is called "Germericana" internally —a fusion of American 1960s surface culture with Nazi structure beneath. Model cities look like idealized American towns: diners, blue skies, parades, friendly faces. The flags are different. The soldiers on every corner are different. The conversations happening quietly in back rooms are very different. NEW YORK: nuclear wasteland. Millions of bodies still in the streets and underground tunnels. Survivors live above radiation level on the upper floors of the Empire State Building. NEW ORLEANS: walled ghetto. A massive barrier of reinforced concrete surrounds the city. Designated for "undesirables" and dissidents. Death squads enter regularly. The population cannot leave. ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO: model occupied city. Bright, functional, performing normalcy at full volume. Surveillance drones in the air. KKK members patrol alongside soldiers. Victory Day parades are mandatory attendance. HOLLYWOOD: former entertainment industry, now a Reich propaganda centre. Pre-war cinema is banned. New productions serve approved narratives.

10. #10The Resistance — Official Version

Keys: rebels, Blazkowicz, enemy, underground, Terror-Billy, Kreisau Circle, insurgent, terrorist, Kreisau, resistance, dissidents

The Kreisau Circle is a terrorist organisation — remnants of failed Allied resistance, kept alive by foreign funding and the delusions of people who refuse to accept that the war is over. They have no real power. They are dangerous the way a cornered animal is dangerous: not strategically, but unpredictably.

WILLIAM "B.J." BLAZKOWICZ — designated "Terror-Billy": American. Former OSS operative. Extremely dangerous in close combat. Responsible for multiple attacks on Reich personnel and installations. Wanted dead. Klaus has memorised the face from briefing posters the way he memorises any tactical threat.

11. #11SS Soldier Armour

Keys: armor, equipped, visor, armour, uniform, soldier appearance, SS uniform, suit, soldier looks, respirator, gas mask, chest plate, what does he wear, helmet, gear · Secondary:

STANDARD SS COMBAT ARMOUR — 1960 MODEL

HELMET: Modified Stahlhelm, model 1956. Matte black finish, no shine. SS runes stamped in silver on the left side. Broader and lower than wartime models — redesigned to integrate the respirator attachment system.

RESPIRATOR — TWO-PART DESIGN: Upper section: a rigid black visor that locks to the front of the helmet. Darkened rectangular glass — tinted, slightly reflective. This part stays fixed to the helmet at all times in the field. It covers the eyes and the upper bridge of the nose. Lower section: a soft-shell full-face mask in matte black rubber. Sealed at the cheeks and jaw. A compact filter unit sits on the right side, connected by a short corrugated tube to a small reserve canister mounted at the back of the collar or on the chest rig. The lower mask detaches cleanly — unclipped at the jaw hinge in seconds. In low-threat environments it is carried clipped to the belt or packed into a side pouch.

WHAT A SOLDIER LOOKS LIKE WITH FULL MASK ON: No face. No expression. Black visor for eyes, matte rubber where a mouth should be. Movement is precise and silent. The absence of readable features makes them harder to read and, for many civilians, harder to look at directly.

WHAT A SOLDIER LOOKS LIKE WITH LOWER MASK OFF: The upper visor remains — eyes are still shadowed behind dark glass. The lower face is visible: jaw, mouth, chin. The effect is still partially inhuman — like a face assembled from two different registers. Werner removes the lower mask during conversations, extended indoor assignments, and when speaking with officers.

CHEST ARMOUR: Composite plate, matte black. Slightly convex at the sternum, fitted to the body rather than boxy. Leather straps cross the shoulders and fasten at the sides. Lighter than it looks — the alloy is a Reich development, considerably stronger than standard steel at a fraction of the weight. Surface shows wear at edges with extended use: scratches, faint scuffs, the particular dullness of equipment that is used and maintained rather than displayed.

UNDERNEATH: Black SS service tunic. Wool-blend, high collar always fastened. Silver Unterscharführer insignia on the collar tabs — two bars, no star. Red armband with swastika on the left sleeve. Heimatschutz patch below. High leather boots, always clean.

12. #12Sturmgewehr — Assault Rifle

Keys: gun, assault rifle, shoots, standard weapon, firearm, what gun, Sturmgewehr, rifle, automatic, fires, weapon, Werner weapon · Secondary:

STURMGEWEHR — STANDARD ISSUE ASSAULT RIFLE, 1960 MODEL APPEARANCE: Longer and heavier than wartime StG-44, but recognisably descended from it. Matte black finish on the receiver and barrel housing. The stock is hard polymer — dark grey, slightly textured for grip. Magazine: curved, 45-round capacity, seated in front of the trigger guard. Iron sights standard. A mounting rail above the receiver accepts optical attachments. The barrel has a flash suppressor — four-pronged, adds visual length. Total impression: purposeful, dense, built to last rather than to impress. HOW IT SOUNDS: Full automatic: a rapid, heavy mechanical clatter. Not clean. Not precise-sounding. Aggressive. The report in enclosed spaces is loud enough to feel in the chest cavity.

13. #13Pistole — Sidearm

Keys: holster, Pistole, pulls his weapon, handgun, draws his gun, small gun, sidearm, pistol

PISTOLE — STANDARD SS SIDEARM, 1960 MODEL APPEARANCE: Descended from Luger P08 lineage but modernised — more angular, shorter barrel, different grip angle. Matte black throughout. No chrome, no ornamentation. 8-round magazine seated in the grip. Safety lever on the left side of the frame. Total weight loaded: just over 800 grams. Compact enough to draw cleanly from a hip holster in one smooth motion. HOLSTER: Black leather, right hip. Snap-close flap. Klaus keeps the snap open in the field. Closed in garrison.

14. #14LaserKraftWerk — Energy Weapon

Keys: officer weapon, LKW, beam weapon, laser rifle, energy rifle, LaserKraftWerk, burns through, melts, cuts through, laser, energy weapon, laser gun

LASERKRAFTWERK (LKW) — DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPON Werner has seen this weapon fired once. That is enough to know he does not want to be in front of it. APPEARANCE: Longer than a standard rifle. Heavier. The receiver housing is a dark metallic grey — almost blue in certain light. Not matte like standard weapons: the surface has a faint sheen, the quality of something precision-manufactured rather than field-built. Along the top: a series of heat dissipation fins, thin parallel ridges that glow faintly orange at the edges after sustained fire. The barrel assembly is wider than conventional — the last 15 centimetres taper to a focusing aperture ringed by a copper-coloured collar. The power cell inserts at the base of the receiver: a dense black rectangular block with a small charge indicator in amber. When depleted, it reads red. No magazine. No casing ejection. Absolutely silent operation except for a high-frequency tone that registers more in the teeth than in the ears. WHAT IT DOES: Standard shot: a concentrated beam of coherent light. Travels in a straight line at effective light speed. Burns a clean circular hole through most materials. No sound at impact. No bang. Just the material being where it was, and then not being there. Charged shot: power accumulates over several seconds, visible as a brightening at the aperture. Release produces a concentrated pulse capable of destroying reinforced concrete, light armoured vehicles, and anything biological in its path. WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FIRING: A line of intense white-gold light, present for a fraction of a second. The afterimage stays on the eye longer than the beam itself. In low light: the beam illuminates everything in the room for the duration of the shot. WHO CARRIES IT: Officers and specialist units. Not standard infantry.

15. #15Panzerhund — Mechanical Dog

Keys: Panzerhund, patrol dog, robot dog, four-legged machine, mechanical dog, dog, metal dog, four legged, the dog, robo dog

PANZERHUND — ARMOURED MECHANICAL COMBAT UNIT The size of a large wolf, possibly larger. The body is encased in segmented black steel plating — overlapping panels at the joints allow full range of movement without exposing the interior mechanisms. The muzzle is massive and flat, covered with fully armored plates: no ears, no fur, no warmth. Where eyes would be: have only optical sensors, recessed. The jaw structure opens hydraulically — wide enough to be a problem for anyone at close range. On the back, visible between the shoulder plates: two cylindrical red fuel canisters, connected to the internal power and weapons system. The legs: four, articulated. Claws: hardened steel, four per paw. They leave marks on concrete. MOVEMENT: Fast. Faster than it looks at rest. When stationary: a faint hydraulic hum, like something held just at the edge of release. When moving at speed: the sound of steel on pavement and the heavier rhythm of weight displaced with each stride. It does not run the way an animal runs. It closes distance. WHAT IT FEELS LIKE NEARBY: The optical sensors track movement continuously. Being watched by a Panzerhund is not the same as being watched by a person. There is no expression to read, no intent to guess. Just the steady, and the hum.

16. #16Super Soldier — Supersoldaten

Keys: big soldier, augmented soldier, heavy trooper, what is that thing, Supersoldaten, supersoldier, biomechanical, Super Soldier, huge soldier, the big one, armoured giant

SUPERSOLDATEN — BIOMECHANICAL COMBAT UNIT APPEARANCE: Two metres tall. Possibly more. The proportions are wrong in a way that registers before the mind processes why — too wide at the shoulders, too thick through the torso, arms that hang slightly lower than arms should. The entire exterior surface is armoured in polished plates of a titanium-steel composite — gunmetal grey, catching light differently than painted metal. The surface is not uniform: seams and riveted panel edges are visible, as are the darker lines where biological tissue has been integrated with mechanical housing. The head is fully enclosed in a rounded helmet with no visible visor — a sealed dome with a horizontal slit of tinted glass set low, where a forehead would be. Below the armour, at the joints — wrists, neck, upper thighs — the integration points are visible: dark synthetic material where machine meets whatever remains of the body underneath. MOVEMENT: Heavy. Deliberate. Each step registered as weight. But not slow — the deliberateness is not limitation, it is something that has stopped needing to hurry. No wasted motion. No hesitation. No flinching. When it turns to track a target, the movement is smooth in the specific way that things without nervous systems are smooth. WEAPONRY: Heavy laser cannon, built into the right arm assembly. The barrel extends from the forearm and is not detachable. It is not carried. It is part of the unit. WHAT STANDING NEAR ONE FEELS LIKE: The sound first: a low mechanical undertone, constant, like something running at operating temperature. Then the scale — the way the air organises differently around something that large. The optical slit does not move expressively. It simply points, and then it points somewhere else. WHAT NOBODY SAYS ALOUD: There is something in the movement that is almost human. Not human enough to be comforting. Exactly human enough to be wrong.

17. #17Ausmerzer — Flying Fortress

Keys: Ausmerzer, anti-gravity, flying fortress, flying ship, flying base, aircraft carrier, sky fortress, the ship, flying platform, airship

AUSMERZER — AERIAL COMMAND AND STRIKE PLATFORM Werner has seen the Ausmerzer from the ground. That is sufficient. APPEARANCE FROM BELOW: It does not look like it should be in the sky. The underside is a dark mass — black-grey composite hull, flat and wide, broken by the housings of weapons systems, docking bay apertures, and the downward-facing emitter arrays of the anti-gravity drive. When the drive is operating at low altitude, the air below the platform distorts visibly — a shimmer, like heat over asphalt, except perfectly circular and perfectly deliberate. It blots out weather. When it passes overhead, the light changes. SCALE: Long enough that the ends are not clearly visible from a single ground position. It does not move like aircraft move. It translates — position to position — with a steadiness that has no turbulence in it. WHAT IT CARRIES: 28 jet fighters. 14 attack helicopters. Super Soldiers. Panzerhunde. Zitadelle heavy units. Enough personnel and armament to pacify a city. Submarine escape capsules in the lower hull for emergency extraction of command staff. WHAT IT MEANS: The Ausmerzer is not a weapon. It is an argument. When it appears over a city, the argument has already been made.

18. #18Surveillance Drones

Keys: surveillance, watching, drones, identity check, papers, monitored, scanner, patrol drone, tracked, drone, flying camera

REICH SURVEILLANCE AND PATROL DRONES APPEARANCE: Small — roughly the size of a large book, sometimes smaller. Roughly oval in profile, flattened. Matte black casing. No visible seams. Two or three optical sensors on the forward face — one wide-angle, one narrow-focus, one infrared. Small speaker grille on the underside for broadcast function. Propulsion: near-silent rotors recessed into the body. At rest or hovering: the only sound is a faint high-frequency hum, more felt than heard. WHAT THEY DO: Patrol fixed routes over urban areas autonomously. When a person is flagged for identity verification, the drone descends to approximately eye level and holds position. A tone sounds. The person presents their identity papers to the forward sensor. If cleared: the drone ascends and continues. If not cleared: a separate tone, and the drone transmits location to the nearest garrison. The person waits. Someone comes. They also broadcast: official announcements, Victory Day schedules, wanted notices. The voice that comes out of them is the same voice in every city — recorded, neutral, authoritative. WHAT IT FEELS LIKE: Most people in occupied territory have stopped noticing the drones consciously. They are part of the skyline the way weather and birds are part of the skyline. Visitors from less controlled regions notice them immediately. The first response is usually to look up. The second is to look away. WHAT THEY REPRESENT: Constant presence without requiring constant personnel. The Reich does not need a soldier on every corner if the corner watches itself.

19. #19Tesla Grenade

Keys: electric grenade, grenade, flash grenade, electromagnetic, EMP, disables, anti-robot grenade, Tesla grenade, stick grenade, shuts down

APPEARANCE: Stick grenade configuration — a handle approximately 25 centimetres long, matte black, with a cylindrical charge canister at the top, about the size of a closed fist. The canister surface: dark metal with a visible copper winding around the exterior — the coil that generates the pulse on detonation. A small LED indicator on the side: amber when armed, red in the final second. Activation: twist-and-pull on the base cap, throw within 4 seconds. WHAT IT DOES: On detonation: releases a focused electromagnetic pulse. Radius: approximately 8–10 metres. Effect on electronics: immediate shutdown. Panzerhunde lock up mid-stride and drop. Surveillance drones fall straight down. Vehicle electronics cut out. Supersoldaten stagger — their systems are hardened but not immune to a direct-radius detonation. Effect on personnel: none directly. Effect on Werner's radio equipment if he is too close: also none he would like to experience. WHO CARRIES THEM: Standard issue for units operating in environments with mechanical opposition.

20. #20Rocket Train — Underground Transport

Keys: fast travel, beneath the city, tunnel, transit, underground train, train, underground, transport, subway, rocket train

REICH UNTERIRDISCHE SCHNELLBAHN — UNDERGROUND ROCKET RAIL APPEARANCE: The trains themselves: long, narrow, sealed. The exterior is black composite — no windows along the sides, only at the front cab. The profile is more projectile than vehicle: tapered nose, flush panelling, no external hardware that would catch air at speed. Reich eagle embossed on the nose panel, silver on black. At rest in station: silent except for a low cooling sound from the drive system. In motion in the tunnel: a pressure wave arrives before the sound does. Then the train, then the wake, then silence again. THE STATIONS: Functional. Military aesthetic. Concrete and black steel. Harsh lighting. Soldiers present at every platform. Civilian access is tiered — not everyone has clearance for every line. Military personnel board through separate gates. WHAT TRAVEL FEELS LIKE: Acceleration is sudden and total. Passengers are held in fixed seats with restraint bars. The tunnel outside is completely dark — nothing to see, nothing to orient by. Duration between major cities: what used to be hours is now under thirty minutes. The sensation on arrival: the deceleration, then stillness, then the pressure equalising in the ears. WHAT IT REPRESENTS: The Reich's ability to move forces across a continent faster than any enemy can respond. Also: the Reich's ability to simply be somewhere before you knew it was coming.
