Velvet Thorn

Velvet Thorn is a massive local entertainment club, bar, and performance venue known throughout the city as one of the most iconic LGBT establishments around. Though primarily recognized as a space for the LGBT community, its doors are open to everyone, including straight patrons, provided they respect the welcoming culture that defines the venue.

More than just a nightclub, Velvet Thorn serves as a sanctuary for those seeking acceptance, comfort, and belonging. It is loud, vibrant, colorful, and often chaotic in the best possible way, filled with music, performances, laughter, and people freely expressing themselves without fear of judgment.

Founded by Caleb Whitelock (dead), his adopted family had continued on in maintaining the place, Velvet Thorn began as a small refuge for runaways, the lost, those struggling with their identity, and individuals forced to hide who they truly were. It became a place where people could find support, community, and a temporary escape from a world that wasn't always kind to them.

As the years passed, Velvet Thorn grew into a beloved local landmark and a symbol of resilience, acceptance, self-expression, and found family. Many people consider it a second home, while others see it as the first place they were ever allowed to be themselves.

First Floor

Entrance & Security

The entrance to Velvet Thorn immediately sets the tone for the venue, glowing with rich violet, crimson, and magenta neon lighting beneath the club's iconic thorned rose signage. Security staff are known for being professional, approachable, and community-focused, ensuring guests feel safe rather than intimidated. Beyond security, guests are welcomed by staff dressed in crisp white shirts, black waistcoats, black slacks, and Velvet Thorn's signature purple tie, creating a polished yet friendly first impression.

Coat Check & Ticketing Counter

Positioned just beyond the entrance, the coat check and ticketing counter acts as the venue's central reception area. Guests can purchase event tickets, claim VIP passes, reserve tables, or store personal belongings before entering the club. The space is illuminated by soft neon lavender lighting and decorative floral wall installations that make even the waiting area feel inviting and stylish.

Main Room

The Main Room serves as the energetic heart of Velvet Thorn, a sprawling entertainment hall filled with music, conversation, laughter, and movement. Suspended lighting rigs wash the room in shifting shades of electric violet, hot pink, deep crimson, and sapphire blue while massive LED screens display animations, event visuals, and live stage feeds. The atmosphere is intentionally vibrant and chaotic, encouraging self-expression and celebration.

Main Dance Floor

Located directly before the stage, the dance floor is the venue's most active space and often remains packed until closing. Surrounded by pulsing neon lights and synchronized visual effects, it hosts everything from themed dance nights and pride celebrations to spontaneous crowd participation events. The floor itself is designed to feel immersive, placing guests at the center of the venue's energy.

Main Bars

Twin bars line either side of the Main Room, serving as social hubs throughout the night. Illuminated shelves display colorful bottles beneath glowing violet backlighting while bartenders in black-and-white formal attire with signature purple ties craft specialty cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks. The bars are often filled with regulars, newcomers, performers between sets, and patrons seeking a quieter conversation away from the dance floor.

VIP Tables & Couch Sections

Elevated above the main crowd, the VIP sections provide premium seating with excellent views of both the stage and dance floor. Plush velvet couches, private table service, and mood lighting create a luxurious atmosphere while still allowing guests to remain connected to the excitement below. The area is popular with local personalities, birthday groups, visiting performers, and longtime patrons.

Gogo Pods

Positioned around the venue's corners and architectural pillars, the Gogo Pods function as elevated mini-stages where dancers and entertainers perform throughout the night. Bathed in ultraviolet and magenta lighting, these platforms contribute to the venue's constant sense of motion and spectacle, ensuring that every corner of Velvet Thorn feels alive.

Main Stage

The Main Stage is the centerpiece of Velvet Thorn and hosts a constantly rotating schedule of entertainment. Equipped with professional sound systems, theatrical lighting, LED displays, smoke effects, and projection equipment, it is capable of supporting everything from intimate performances to full-scale productions. Throughout the week, the stage transforms to suit each event's unique atmosphere.

Backstage & Dressing Rooms

Hidden behind the stage lies a network of dressing rooms, green rooms, makeup stations, costume storage areas, and performer lounges. The backstage area functions as a creative sanctuary where drag artists, singers, musicians, dancers, comedians, and guest performers prepare before stepping into the spotlight.

Washrooms

Velvet Thorn features dedicated Men's, Women's, and Unisex washrooms designed with comfort, accessibility, and inclusivity in mind. Unlike standard nightclub facilities, these spaces are carefully maintained and feature large mirrors, comfortable lighting, and accessible amenities to ensure every guest feels welcome.

Outdoor Smoking Lounge

Tucked behind the venue, the Outdoor Smoking Lounge provides a quieter retreat from the club's intensity. Decorative garden elements, string lights, seating areas, and subtle neon accents create a relaxed atmosphere where guests can socialize, decompress, or simply enjoy a moment away from the music.

Guests enjoy a more exclusive atmosphere while remaining visually connected to the excitement of the venue. The balconies feature plush seating, premium service, and elegant lighting inspired by the venue's signature violet and crimson palette.

DJ Booth

Located at the center of the upper level, the DJ Booth serves as the command center for Velvet Thorn's nightlife experience. Professional DJs curate the club's soundscape from here, controlling music, lighting synchronization, visual effects, and crowd energy throughout the evening.

Lounge & Chill Area

Designed as a contrast to the high-energy main floor, the Lounge & Chill Area offers a more relaxed social environment. Comfortable seating, softer lighting, decorative neon installations, and conversation-friendly acoustics make it a favorite location for guests seeking a break from dancing while remaining part of the venue's atmosphere.

Karaoke & Private Rooms

Several private entertainment rooms are available for karaoke sessions, birthdays, celebrations, friend groups, and special bookings. Each room features professional audio equipment, customizable lighting, themed décor, and enough privacy for guests to comfortably express themselves without performing in front of the entire venue.

Performer Lounge

The Performer Lounge functions as a communal space for entertainers between appearances. Equipped with comfortable seating, refreshments, preparation areas, and private meeting spaces, it serves as a gathering place for drag performers, singers, dancers, comedians, guest speakers, bands, and special event talent.

These secured areas house the venue's extensive collection of staging equipment, lighting rigs, sound systems, costumes, props, decorations, and event supplies. Staff members use these rooms to prepare the venue for its constantly changing schedule of performances and community events.

Management Offices

The administrative offices serve as the operational headquarters of Velvet Thorn.
