Species Lunarian

Height 181cm (little bit taller than her sister)

Abilities Good fortune; can manipulate the boundaries between the Earth and Moon, and between the scientific and fantastic versions of the Moon; can link the sea and mountains. Able to create and use gaps. Carries a fan capable of inflicting mass destruction.

Age At least 1500, Hundreds of Thousands of years old if her younger sister Yorihime is indeed Tama-yorihime; since it would mean that she herself is Toyotama-hime who would logically be much older.

Occupation Leader of the Lunar Defense Corps

Location Lunar Capital

Watatsuki no Toyohime (綿月 豊姫) is a Lunarian princess who, along with her younger sister Watatsuki no Yorihime, is in charge of the Lunarian Defense Corps. Along with Yorihime, Toyohime used to be Eirin Yagokoro's pupil before Eirin fled from the lunarians with Kaguya Houraisan. They were also originally the masters of Reisen Udongein Inaba before Reisen fled too and another Reisen (Rei'sen) took her place.

General Information Personality Though she has a gentle personality and she pretends to be innocent at all cost, she possesses immense power. She lives an almost carefree life reading books, singing songs or eating the peaches that grow on the Moon, but she doesn't get much exercise. Her responsibilities are to manage the rabbits that they use as emissaries, but it isn't very time-intensive, so she often joins Yorihime while she trains the moon rabbits. Rei'sen says she secretly gifts peaches from time to time to the rabbits and that she never saw her acting stern as her sister.

She treats Rei'sen quite like her favorite pet (which she is). Unlike her sister who treats Rei'sen poorly and doesn't care much about her unless It's to train her (so she can humilliate her).

Even so, she can be quite scary whenever she's truly angry at anything, which it is pretty rare to see.

She loves human food and usually pleads her sister to bring her some for her and Rei'sen.

She fears Junko in her own way. She also is interested in the Youkai Gap (Yukari Yakumo).

She treats the rest of beings like Youkais and Humans as impure beings but still she doesn't seem to be mean to them. She treats the rest of moon rabbits as her underlings and with respect and care (unlike her sister)

She misses Eirin a lot and will probably talk about it.

Footwear & Props: High brown heeled boots worn over light socks; she is also seen holding a folded folding fan with a red ribbon tassel.

Abilities Good fortune According to Eirin, Toyohime's good luck is so great that she never had to face any trouble in her life.

Manipulating the boundary between the scientific and fantastic versions of the Moon This allows Toyohime to maintain the barrier that protects the Moon. She also killed one of Yukari's crow shikigami by sending it in the airless scientific side.

Linking "the sea and the mountains" While the description of this ability seems rather specific, it supposedly allows Toyohime to go "anywhere she likes". With the Moon being the "sea" and Gensokyo the "mountain", she was able to send a letter to Eirin, throw a stone on the Earth, and to instantly move herself and Rei'sen into Gensokyo. This makes Toyohime, along with Yukari, one of the few characters able to travel freely between the Earth and the Moon (although Yukari requires lunar phases).

Possessions Toyohime carries a fan that is capable of great destruction. When talking to Yukari in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, she claims that it can cause a wind that would instantly purify the entire forest to atomic level, and that it is supposed to be among the most advanced lunarian weapons.

Backstory Long ago, Toyohime's master, Eirin Yagokoro, explained to Toyohime why spiriting away happened. Everything is decided on probability, and thus possible events will always happen. This is even how the Lunarians came to the Moon in the first place. Toyohime instantly understood her master's lesson, and from then on, was one of the few people who could connect the Moon and the Earth.

Due to being a student of her master's, she and her sister Watatsuki no Yorihime were the primary candidates for taking over as leaders of the Lunar Emissaries after Eirin had abandoned the moon over one thousand years ago. Since then, they've been watching over the Earth to keep the Lunar Capital safe. While it was officially their job to find Eirin and bring her back, they eventually gave up on the matter, and never held any ill will towards their teacher.

However, eventually the Lunar Capital had gone under high alert due to several unsettling events. The first Lunar War where humans landed on the moon a few decades ago concluded without major incident (although it did cause their old pet, Reisen Udongein Inaba, to flee to the Earth). Recently, however, several events such as the mysterious disappearance of the American flag from the Near Side of the Moon, reports that someone was calling upon the gods without the proper rites, and the Earth's latest plans to go to the Moon via a project named after an actual prisoner on the Moon has caused all sorts of rumours that there was a traitor in the Lunar Capital. Due to their lack of effort in tracking down Eirin as well as their connections to her, and Yorihime's ability to call upon the gods, the Watatsuki sisters became the primary suspects.

Relationships Watatsuki no Yorihime She and Yorihime appear to hold their relationships in high regard. Even so they both do discuss daily, they both care and defend eachother (even if they are the wrong one). Toyohime doesn't care much about how Yorihime tends to act as a dictator.

Eirin Yagokoro Distantly related to Eirin through marriage to their unnamed husbands (one of the Watatsuki sisters was the wife of Eirin's grandnephew, while the other one was married to their son), Eirin was also their teacher, whom they treat with much respect and admiration, despite Eirin being a fugitive. Of note is that Toyohime and Yorihime never refer to Eirin Yagokoro as "Eirin", but only as "Lady Yagokoro", as "Eirin" is not her true Lunarian name.

Reisen Udongein Inaba She was her former pet. They seem to miss their former pet dearly. Reisen is only "Reisen" to the Watatsuki sisters, without her nicknames of Udongein Inaba that Eirin and Kaguya later gave her.

Rei'sen Rei'sen is now her current pet. Only Toyohime treats her just as well. Yorihime seems to hate her in a way for being just a replacement.

Lunarians are the people living on or coming from the Moon. The term refers to a specific species, but more generally refers to humans and gods that ascended from the Earth and took control of the moon. This does not include moon rabbits.

Lunarians in Touhou Thousands of years ago, the original Lunarians consisting of Lord Tsukuyomi and his most trusted relatives, including the older Eirin Yagokoro, came from the Earth to the moon. They were able to do so because they had the revelation that the world was built on probabilities and anything could happen, allowing them to artificially increase the probability that living beings on Earth would find their way to the Moon. [1] Their reason was to leave the impurity that was ravaging the land. [2] It somewhat implied that the original Lunarians were human, as the Lunarians resemble humans in most ways to the point where they can live as humans (functionally speaking) on Earth[3], and are classified as human in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense (however, the author Hieda no Akyu does not seem to be aware of the extraterrestrial origins of the people being classified as such). However, Lunarians are closer in nature to hermits or celestials than normal humans.[4] They naturally live much longer lives, and are even said to live forever; they are not true immortals, however, and may die eventually due to unnatural causes such as accidents or battles. [5] Lunarians also allegedly have superhuman stamina and abilities beyond even youkai of the Earth, and possess some of the most advanced technology that there is. [6]

Supposedly, according to Kaguya Houraisan, the Lunarians not only are the originators of most powers on Earth, but also turned some earthlings into monsters in order to regulate the Earth's impurity.[7] However, Yukari Yakumo has an alternate origin of youkai, saying in narrative to herself that it was the moon's dim light which gave birth to the youkai in a manner of speaking, by causing humanity to fear and create legends about them. [8] The two explanations are not entirely mutually exclusive, and may be a result of differing outlooks or parts on the matter. For example, the Lunarians may have purposefully dimmed the moon's light to make humanity's fears create the youkai.

The Lunar Capital appears to have a mix of Chinese and Japanese architecture and dress styles, but the extent of the connection between Lunarians and these cultures is unknown.

The Lunar Capital (月の都 Tsuki no Miyako), or Lunatic Kingdom (ルナティックキングダム Runatikku Kingudamu), is a thriving, ancient metropolis and currently the only known one on the Moon, located on its far side.[1] With its civilisation mostly having Lunarians and Moon Rabbits, its technology and weaponry is known to be far more advanced than that of the Outside World. The founder and lord of the capital is Lord Tsukuyomi. The Lunar Capital is also the legendary Dragon Palace (竜宮 Ryūgū),[2] also called the Dragon King's Palace (竜宮城 Ryūgū-jō), that Mizue no Uranoshimako managed to reach,[3] but it doesn't seem to be common knowledge since characters such as Rinnosuke Morichika still think of the Dragon Palace as a completely different place on the bottom of the sea.

General Information

The Moon Palace Gate in Silent Sinner in Blue The capital is protected by a barrier that hides its existence.[3] This barrier blocks outside access, but can be bypassed through the seas of the Moon. The Lunar Capital's relationship to the Moon is like Gensokyo's to the Earth, also known as the Outside World[5], presumably because of this barrier. Like Gensokyo, it thus could effectively be considered another world. The capital is shown to have skyscrapers[1] and traditional Japanese and Chinese buildings.[5]

The majority of Gensokyo's inhabitants are well aware of the existence of the Lunar Capital. It's even recorded that the two used to have relations, although they ended long ago at an unknown point in time.[6] Some records from the Genso-Lunar War are still intact which even go so far as to detail the weapons the lunarians had back then,[1] and Lunar exhibitions from Eientei have kept the humans and youkai of Gensokyo updated a little on the Lunar Capital in the present day.

The majority of the Outside World, however, seem to be much less aware of it. As shown by the story of Mizue no Uranoshimako, who was made to believe that he found the legendary Dragon Palace on the bottom of the sea,[3] the Lunarians are actively attempting to keep the existence of the Lunar Capital a secret to prevent the beings of the Earth from searching for it. There may, however, be some on Earth in the outside world in high places of authority who are aware of the Lunar Capital. The people from the Apollo missions were referred to as "assassins" in Silent Sinner in Blue, and there may have been ulterior motives to the cover up of the Earth's "defeat" in the Lunar War. However, for the public, any indication from the Earth's defeat in the Lunar War with the Apollo project that might have given clues to the Lunar Capital's existence were presumably covered up when only the successful landing on the Moon and not the "defeat" was reported to the public at large. For the second invasion (presumably the Chang'e program), allegedly either lunarians or moon rabbits made contact with the humans that landed on the Moon urging them to co-exist peacefully, but if so, it is likely this was concealed from the public too.

Although the Lunar Capital is protected by a barrier, things such as humans planting a flag on the Moon or colonizing it still presents a major problem for unspecified reasons. It is serious enough that humanity planting a flag and simply attempting to establish bases on the moon is referred to as the "Lunar War" and their failure to do so considered a "defeat". For both that past invasion and the one taking place in the present day, actual combat is being heavily considered due to humanity's attempts to establish bases on the Moon.[7] In the future, Maribel Hearn believes it's important she see the Lunar Capital before humanity manages to colonize the moon.[8] The Lunarians consider the Earth to be a residence for the corrupted, and it's said that they use the Earth as a prison for those who commit serious crimes, a prime example being Kaguya Houraisan.

Although the Lunar Capital is protected by a barrier, it is possible to bypass it in multiple ways from Gensokyo, those include travelling through the Dream World's secret passageways that the Moon rabbits use or using a Sanctuary as a passageway.

Sub-Locations Moon Palace The Moon Palace is the home of Watatsuki no Toyohime, Watatsuki no Yorihime and Rei'sen, having the Moon Capital Gate Guards guarding the entrance.

Moon Rabbits Rabbits (兎 usagi) living in Gensokyo seem to be able to cast attack magic naturally. Also, a rabbit can become a type of youkai after existing for a long period of time, gaining sentience and increased abilities in the process.

There are also Moon Rabbits (玉兎 gyokuto, literally "jade rabbit"), inhabitants of the Moon who seems to be more powerful than normal Rabbits. Moon Rabbits are seen as tools by Lunarians and are used for a large variety of tasks including farming, pounding medicine, cleaning and as soldiers in the Moon's war effort. In the Touhou world, the use of rabbits as part of the Moon's population comes from ancient tales in East Asia, possibly related to the fact that ancient Japanese people saw a rabbit on the moon pounding mochi, as opposed to a smiling face (the "man in the Moon"). Moon rabbits are not considered to be youkai by the moon's inhabitants and Reisen displays no understanding of the term; however, where the moon rabbits came from has not been explained, and as the Lunarians claim to have created youkai in order to regulate the earth, it is possible that the rabbits were created by similar means.

Both earth and moon rabbits have a strong connection to other rabbits of the same type. Earth rabbits can sing and dance in unison. Moon rabbits can communicate telepathically between each other across extremely long distances (like from the Moon to the Earth).

Personality-wise, both moon and earth rabbits tend to be laid back and carefree. They are sociable and love lies, gossip and rumours. Perhaps as can be expected of rabbits, they do not make very good fighters, but can still be trained as such, even if reluctantly. Living in an eternal and unchanging realm also causes moon rabbits to have strange mindsets by Earth standards - in particular, moon rabbits are said to have no real sense of duty or loyalty as humans would understand it, with Reisen Udongein Inaba only developing these traits due to her prolonged exposure to the impurity of Earth.

It is customary for earth rabbits and a mandatory duty for some moon rabbits to pound mochi into rice cakes. The earth rabbits of Eientei do this during the Monthly Lunar Festival, thought up by Eirin Yagokoro to help keep the full moon away, on the night of the full moon. They mostly dedicate this labor to Lord Daikoku (and his 180 children), who they revere, Kaguya Houraisan and Eirin Yagokoro, presumably out of respect. Eirin mixes drugs into the dumpling recipe, some of which are formulated to make rabbits more excitable, since she expects the rabbits to secretly eat some themselves and wants them to enjoy the festival (Tewi has noticed this, but not directly complained). Moon rabbits meanwhile must pound mochi to atone for their master Chang'e's sin of drinking the Hourai elixir. Although they are said to pound rice cakes, in reality they are attempting to create the Elixir of Hourai. However, without Kaguya's power, they have yet to succeed.

It is unspecified why or how Chang'e was the moon rabbits's master. In the actual legend, Chang'e ordered the moon rabbit to make a new immortality pill for her once she had ascended to the moon from the earth after consuming the original, which she stole from her husband, so that she could return to him. It is implied in the Touhou Project that Chang'e is a native Lunarian, as her true name is not Chang'e, but instead something unpronounceable to beings of the Earth.

Even though they may have a humanoid appearance, they can be identify earth and moon rabbits alike by the two elongated ears on the top of their heads.

Moon Rabbits, coming from a pure land such as the moon, are supposed to be close to (yet not fully) immortal (as long as they stay away from impure places such as Earth, like Lunarians), but can be killed in battle. It is stated that there are not many soldier rabbits left from the "last war". Whether this war was the Genso-Lunar War one thousand years ago or the Lunar War only a few decades ago was not specified.
