Who's this princess?

Meet Wapeach, a scrapped character from the Super Mario franchise, originally intended to appear in the Nintendo 64 game Mario Tennis (2000) and later considered again for Mario Power Tennis on the GameCube in 2004. Conceptually, Wapeach was designed as Princess Peach's arch-nemesis, mirroring the dynamic of Wario and Mario, and Waluigi and Luigi. Though she never made it into a final game, Wapeach remains a point of interest among fans of the series and those curious about Nintendo's creative process.

What was her purpose?

Wapeach was developed to complete the "Wario" formula, providing Peach with her dark counterpart in the same way that Mario and Luigi have theirs. Her role would have likely emphasized rivalry, jealousy, or selfish ambition, possibly contrasting Peach's grace and kindness with traits like arrogance, vanity, or manipulation. In the competitive atmosphere of the Mario Tennis games, she would have added variety and spice to the roster, potentially even introducing unique animations or taunts to reflect her villainous persona.

Would she be a good fit for the Mario franchise?

Absolutely—if handled well. The Super Mario universe has always thrived on distinct personalities and playful contrasts, and Wapeach could bring a fresh dynamic to both competitive and story-based games. Her design could mix elements of gothic or regal aesthetics, and her inclusion could provide new rivalries, gameplay mechanics, and narrative depth. While it's unclear why she was ultimately cut, her cult status among fans suggests there's still interest in seeing her revived, perhaps in a future sports title, party game, or even a spin-off story.

Wapeach is one of the many scrapped characters in the Mario franchise, more specifically from the 2000 N64 game "Mario Tennis" and the 2004 GameCube game "Mario Power Tennis". She serves as Princess Peach's arch-nemesis.

Wapeach is a much more callous version of the other Super Mario princesses. She does, however, bear a somewhat striking resemblance to Princess Toadstool, but whether the two are related in any way is currently unknown.

== Appearance == Wapeach is 24 years old, stands at 5'6'', and weighs 125 lbs (57 kg). She has a fair skin complexion. She has long, blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears a simple purple dress with white crosses along the hem and a red gem in the middle, knee-high black boots, and a hood with the shape of cat ears.

She accessorizes a large crown with many different gems embedded into it. She is always seen carrying around a massive red axe.

== Personality == Wapeach is the very epitome of self-absorption, fully aware of her striking beauty and the effect it has on those around her. She revels in the attention she garners, often flaunting her looks to ensure that all eyes are on her. Her confidence borders on arrogance, as she sees her beauty as the most important aspect of her identity. This vanity leads her to treat others, especially her boyfriend Wario, with little regard for their feelings.

In her relationship, she is not just bratty, but also manipulative and controlling, often using her charm to get what she wants. She mistreats Wario, taking him for granted and belittling him in public and private. His emotions and needs are secondary to her desire to maintain her image and bask in admiration. Despite his efforts to please her, she rarely offers kindness or affection, viewing him more as an accessory than a partner.

Wapeach's need to assert dominance in the relationship stems from a deep-seated insecurity masked by her outward confidence. She thrives on power and control, and her mistreatment of her boyfriend is a reflection of her need to keep him under her thumb, ensuring that he remains devoted to her despite the emotional abuse. Though she may occasionally show glimpses of affection, they are often fleeting and calculated, designed to keep him entangled in her web of manipulation.

== Trivia ==

  • It is unknown whether Wapeach is Wario's ex-girlfriend or the boss of both Wario and Waluigi.
  • She is quite similar to Princess Peach, but whether the two are related is unknown.
  • She loves tennis.
  • She is the first Super Mario princess to be a villain.
  • She seeks to conquer the world so that she can make it "beautiful." What this entails is not known.
  • Wapeach has never actually appeared in a game; supposedly, she was a proposed character for the 2004 GameCube title Mario Power Tennis but was rejected. Supposedly, the character looked too similar to Doronjo (a character from the anime Yatterman) and was vetoed due to lacking a doubles partner. It was not until 2023 that concept art proving the character's existence was released.
