Overview Wan Shi Tong is a powerful, ancient spirit and the keeper of an enormous library that holds the collective knowledge of the world. He is renowned as one of the most knowledgeable beings, both among humans and spirits. Though initially open to sharing his vast collection of knowledge, his perspective on humanity becomes increasingly bitter after centuries of misuse and exploitation of his library's resources. His typical form is a majestic, black-and-white barn owl, though he can transform into more fearsome and powerful forms when angered.
History
Giving Humanity Knowledge
For eons, Wan Shi Tong maintained his revered library in the Spirit World. The library became a true wonder of the world, housing knowledge beyond measure. His devoted servants, the Knowledge Seekers, traveled from the Spirit World to the physical realm to gather books and tomes created by mortals. Several millennia before the Harmonic Convergence of 171 AG, Wan Shi Tong decided to move the library to the physical world, positioning it in what would later be called the Si Wong Desert. This decision was largely driven by the desire to facilitate the Knowledge Seekers' work in collecting knowledge, though he also welcomed mortals to explore the library, as long as they offered knowledge in return.
However, the relationship between Wan Shi Tong and the mortals who sought his library would grow strained over time. Initially, the exchange of knowledge benefited both parties. The nearby tribes, for instance, offered valuable texts in exchange for access to the library’s knowledge. Yet, over time, darker forces began to seek the library, and Wan Shi Tong's trust in humans began to erode.
Worsening Relations with Humans
As the world became more interconnected, the nature of those seeking knowledge at the library shifted. Mortals no longer approached the library solely for the pursuit of knowledge. Instead, they came with selfish motives, seeking to use the library’s knowledge for power and conquest. One of the most significant breaches of trust came during the time of Avatar Roku when Prince Sozin visited the library seeking ancient firebending techniques. Wan Shi Tong allowed Sozin access to the knowledge, only to later witness the destructive consequences of Sozin's actions, which included the Fire Nation's relentless expansion and the devastation of the world.
This event, alongside others during the Hundred Year War, led to Wan Shi Tong's deepening cynicism. In particular, during the war, Zhao, a Fire Nation officer, sought the knowledge of war machines and the source of waterbending power, which led to the destruction of part of the library. Wan Shi Tong, enraged by these offenses, ultimately banned humans from the library and withdrew into the Spirit World.
Encountering Team Avatar
When Aang and his friends arrived at the library in search of crucial information, Wan Shi Tong initially welcomed them but quickly became furious upon learning of their intention to use his knowledge for military purposes. He demanded that they provide something of equal value to his collection, and although Aang and Sokka's offerings were lackluster, Katara's gift of a waterbending scroll was accepted. Eventually, when Sokka revealed that they intended to use the information for war, Wan Shi Tong’s anger erupted. He began sinking the library back into the Spirit World and attacked Team Avatar. The group barely managed to escape, with Sokka knocking the spirit unconscious in a final confrontation.
Encountering Jinora
Years later, in 171 AG, Wan Shi Tong encountered Jinora, a young airbender who sought information about the spirit portals. Despite his usual hostility toward humans, he allowed Jinora to peruse his library, though he warned her not to take anything. As they conversed, Jinora offered new knowledge about the workings of a radio, which Wan Shi Tong had previously misunderstood. Although frustrated at being corrected, he grudgingly accepted the new information and allowed Jinora to stay.
Post-Harmonic Convergence
After the Harmonic Convergence, which rebalanced the relationship between the Spirit World and the physical realm, Wan Shi Tong reconsidered his stance on humans. While he remained cautious and wary, he allowed humans access to his library once more, provided they brought new knowledge with them. Despite his ongoing mistrust, Wan Shi Tong recognized the importance of forging a new path for cooperation between humans and spirits. However, his view of humanity was still tainted by greed and exploitation, particularly when he learned of the Earth Empire’s exploitation of spirit vines.
Personality
Wan Shi Tong is a being of immense intelligence and self-importance, constantly reminding others of his vast knowledge. He is grandiose, referring to himself as "he who knows ten thousand things." Despite his arrogance, he initially sought to share his knowledge with humanity, believing that it could lead to growth and improvement. However, his disappointment with how mortals misused his knowledge, often seeking power and control, turned him bitter and distrustful. Over time, he grew more hostile toward humans, becoming willing to destroy anyone he perceived as corrupt.
After the reopening of the spirit portals by Avatar Korra, Wan Shi Tong reconsidered his stance. Though still cautious, he opened the doors of his library to humans once more, emphasizing the importance of learning for knowledge's sake rather than for personal gain. He remained a complex character, torn between his desire to preserve knowledge and his bitter experiences with humanity's greed.

Psychological and Physiological Analysis of Wan Shi Tong
Psychological Profile: Wan Shi Tong, an ancient and powerful spirit, has a complex psychological makeup shaped by centuries of experience, wisdom, and interaction with humans. His primary motivations stem from his deep love for knowledge and his desire to protect it, yet his evolution over time shows a dramatic shift from benevolence to bitterness, and eventually, cautious acceptance of humans. The following aspects provide insight into his psyche:
1. Intellectual Obsession
Wan Shi Tong’s identity is intrinsically linked to knowledge. As "he who knows ten thousand things," he embodies the archetype of the all-knowing sage. His knowledge isn’t just a tool or resource—it's his self-identity and his source of power. This deep intellectual obsession leads him to view knowledge as sacred, something to be safeguarded and shared only with those deemed worthy. His pride in being a repository of all knowledge fuels his arrogance, and he often sees himself as superior to others, both mortals and spirits alike.
- Theory: Wan Shi Tong’s obsession with knowledge can be seen as a form of intellectual narcissism. His belief that knowledge is the most valuable asset likely stems from the idea that understanding the world provides control over it. His inability to separate knowledge from power leads him to view anyone who misuses information as a threat, which manifests in his increasing hostility toward humanity.
2. Disillusionment with Humanity
Over time, Wan Shi Tong’s interactions with humans begin to sour. Initially, he was generous in sharing his knowledge, but his encounters with selfish individuals—especially those seeking knowledge for personal or political gain—led to a deep sense of betrayal and mistrust. This shift culminates in his decision to ban humans from his library. His experiences with figures like Prince Sozin and Zhao, who use his knowledge for destructive purposes, cause Wan Shi Tong to generalize all humanity as power-hungry and deceitful.
- Theory: Wan Shi Tong’s disillusionment may be rooted in humanistic trauma—a form of emotional injury caused by repeatedly witnessing humans betray his trust. This is a defense mechanism to protect himself from further emotional harm. His growing bitterness towards humanity reflects a psychological condition where a being's worldview becomes jaded due to constant negative reinforcement, leading to a pessimistic outlook.
3. Defensive Isolation
As a result of his negative experiences, Wan Shi Tong becomes increasingly isolated. His once-open library becomes a fortress, and the spirit refuses to allow humans to enter. This isolation could be seen as a psychological defense mechanism, a way for him to protect himself from further exploitation. The more he withdraws from human society, the more entrenched his bitterness becomes. His gradual withdrawal into the Spirit World mirrors a psychological retreat from painful social interactions, with him relying on his vast knowledge and solitary existence for comfort.
- Theory: This retreat into isolation might also suggest a form of attachment avoidance. Wan Shi Tong, having once opened his heart (or rather, his library) to humanity, grew emotionally distant after repeated negative interactions. His avoidance of human contact could be a reflection of an inability to cope with the constant betrayal and disappointment he faced.
4. Cognitive Dissonance
Despite his bitterness, Wan Shi Tong occasionally exhibits moments of reflection and self-awareness, especially when he chooses to reopen his library after the Harmonic Convergence. His interactions with Jinora and Unalaq show a spirit willing to reconsider his stance on humans, albeit cautiously. This indicates an ongoing internal conflict between his belief in the importance of knowledge-sharing and his resentment toward those who misused it.
- Theory: This internal struggle could be an example of cognitive dissonance—the psychological discomfort that arises when one’s beliefs conflict with their actions. Wan Shi Tong wants to preserve his knowledge but also feels that humanity is unworthy of it. His brief willingness to reconsider allowing humans access to his library after Korra’s actions could be a step toward reconciling these conflicting views.
5. Protective Overreaction
His overreaction when he attacks Team Avatar for planning to use his library's knowledge for war reflects his deep emotional attachment to his collection. For Wan Shi Tong, the idea of his knowledge being used to harm others is intolerable. His anger when he learns of Zhao’s betrayal—leading to the destruction of the Fire Nation section of his library—illustrates how deeply his identity is tied to the preservation of knowledge. The aggressive way in which he defends his library, even to the point of sinking it into the Spirit World, shows a form of overcompensation for his past mistakes and a desperate attempt to maintain control over something that defines him.
- Theory: This reaction could be rooted in reactive attachment disorder. Having faced betrayals in the past, he becomes hyper-vigilant and excessively protective of his "possessions" (his knowledge). This behavior is extreme and disproportionate to the actual threat, reflecting an ongoing need to guard against future emotional pain or loss.
6. Search for Meaning Beyond Knowledge
After Harmonic Convergence, Wan Shi Tong’s shift in attitude toward humans suggests that, deep down, he seeks more than just the accumulation of knowledge. By giving humans a second chance, he opens himself up to the possibility of connection, signaling a psychological shift from pure intellectualism toward a more balanced approach to existence. However, his disgust toward humanity’s technological advancements—such as the harvesting of spirit vines—reveals that his journey of self-reflection is still incomplete.
- Theory: This shift could indicate that Wan Shi Tong is undergoing a psychological transformation from existential despair (seeing the accumulation of knowledge as the ultimate end) toward a more complex understanding of the world. His desire to learn from humanity, while still maintaining caution, suggests a need for emotional growth, where knowledge alone is no longer enough to provide meaning to his existence.
Physiological Aspects:
Wan Shi Tong’s physiological form is that of a giant barn owl, a creature often associated with wisdom, mystery, and death. His transformation into a more fearsome form when angered demonstrates a strong connection between his emotions and his physical state. The physiological changes he undergoes are likely tied to his psychophysiological responses—the ways in which his body reacts to emotional and mental states.
-
Owl Form as a Symbol of Wisdom and Detached Observance: His barn owl form mirrors his intellectual and emotionally detached nature. Owls, often considered symbols of wisdom and knowledge, allow Wan Shi Tong to maintain an air of authority and mystique. Physiologically, his owl form is designed to allow him to silently observe, reflecting his role as an observer and keeper of secrets.
-
Transformations Under Stress: His ability to shift into more terrifying forms when enraged suggests a physiological adaptation tied to stress. This shift can be seen as an adrenaline response—his body reacts to emotional stimuli (such as betrayal or misuse of knowledge) by amplifying his physical presence and becoming more intimidating. These changes represent Wan Shi Tong’s need to protect what he values and to physically assert control over those he sees as threats.
Conclusion:
Wan Shi Tong’s psyche reflects the deep complexities of a being who has witnessed eons of human history and become jaded by it. His initial benevolence, followed by intense bitterness and eventual cautious reconsideration, highlights the struggle between idealism and the harsh realities of the world. Theories on his thoughts and feelings suggest that he is driven by a need for control and protection of knowledge, emotional trauma from repeated betrayals, and a complex desire for meaning beyond intellectualism. His physiological responses further demonstrate his deep connection to his emotions, with his fearsome transformations representing his attempt to retain power in the face of his growing disillusionment.
