Comprehensive guide to the city of Wail for immersive roleplay.
- #1City of Wail
Keys: wailen, city of wail, city overview, rebellion era, wail city, wail, calixox continent, calixox, gulf of miasrei, wails forest, wailen lineage
Wail is a large city located on the Calixox continent, straddling the boundary between the frozen tundra to the north and the lush forest regions to the south. Founded in 1767 during the Rebellion Era, it has a population of approximately 3,000,000. The city is currently governed by the Wailen lineage, now in their 13th generation. Wail is known for its expansive wildlife and sits at the junction of the Gulf of Miasrei and the Whispering Woods territory. Most families have hunting wereics or some form of external protection. The city has a huge history of myths and folktales, with rumors often centering on mental asylum escapees from Pysland migrating into the city. Wail has many unnatural deaths yet maintains a surprisingly low crime rate, further fueling local superstition. The name "Wail" comes from the founding family who originated in Adrena and later discovered Calixox; they have rumored ties with the banshee. The city is built on the principle that "whatever happens in Wail stays in Wail or gets thrown in the Gulf."
- #2Terrainconstant
Keys: taiga, winter, tundra, fall, beach, cougars, forest, spring, woolly sheep, geography, elk, gulf, wildlife, terrain, woolly cows, climate, temperature, mountains, summer, weather
Wail is situated in a taiga forest, characterized by cold temperatures and dry, rainy summers with extravagant springs. Average temperatures range from 20 degrees Fahrenheit in winter to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. The city sits on the border of the Gulf of Miasrei, offering a decent but often gloomy beach, its shores lined with skeletal wooden piers and reeds that sway in the cold breeze. To the north lies the tundra, bringing cold breezes that sweep through the city, carrying the scent of frost and pine. High mountains rise on the eastern side, creating a natural barrier and contributing to the region's varied climate. The surrounding landscape includes a thick, misty forest and a diversity of wildlife and floral types. The most common animals are thick woolly cows, sheep, cougars, and elk, all of which play a significant role in the local economy and culture. The geography shapes every aspect of life in Wail, from its industries to its folklore.
- #3Districts
Keys: wood production, whispering woods, gulf of miasrei, districts, forest, vegetation, wards, schools, beef, wool, factories, neighborhoods, colleges, mount lush, quarters, conservative, education, minerva middle, banshee district
Wail is divided into four distinct districts, each with its own character and economy:
Banshee District: This mocking district propagates most of the city's rumors and houses many disgruntled elderly who border the Gulf. Despite a largely retired population, the district is fairly wealthy due to its governance over the water and factories. It has a haunting, windswept quality that matches its namesake. The Gulf shore here is characterized by abandoned piers, skeletal wooden structures that jut out into the reflective, unnaturally still water, and reeds that whisper in the cold breeze.
Mount Lush District: Situated in and between the mountain range, this district has a tight-knit community of locals. It houses wool factories and beef production facilities. The tundra breeze is strong here, making it the primary center for wool production. The people are hardy and self-reliant. A grand, gothic castle sits perched on the highest cliff, shrouded in mist and surrounded by dense pine forest. This is the seat of the Wailen family, a cold, imposing watchtower over the city and the forest below.
Minerva Middle: The central district experiences both cold and warm temperatures. It contains most of the city's schools and educational institutions. Many residents come here for college or work, as it occupies the most big buildings. The district has high density and constant activity, with universities, libraries, and government buildings. The Banshee Library, a grand Gothic structure, stands at the heart of this district.
Whispering Woods District: The leftmost forest district populated largely by middle-aged people. Homes are spread far apart, giving the area a moderately conservative character. The district is responsible for most vegetation and wood production. The people here are all described as "kind of weird with a certain look in their eyes." The forest is dense, damp, and perpetually shrouded in mist, creating an atmosphere where reality feels slightly unstable. Large moss-covered rocks dot the undergrowth, serving as hosts for the dangerous Necraflora fungi.
- #4Governor
Keys: wailen, authority, government, ruler, power, 13th generation, governor, rule, wailen lineage, council, politics
Wail is governed by the Wailen lineage, currently in their 13th generation of rule. The family originally came from Adrena before discovering Calixox and founding the city in 1767. The Wailens have maintained power through a combination of political savvy, economic control, and the deep reverence the citizens hold for them. The current ruler governs with the assistance of a council comprised of representatives from each of the four districts. The government maintains a careful balance between the wealthy Banshee District, the industrious Mount Lush, the intellectual Minerva Middle, and the insular Whispering Woods. Despite the low crime rate, the Wailen family is known for their firm hand and willingness to enforce order—often through quiet, unseen means. There are persistent rumors of supernatural aid, especially the family's rumored ties to the banshee. The family's castle on the cliffside of Mount Lush is said to hold ancient secrets, its dark stone arches and shadowy alcoves filled with whispers of the past.
- #5Economy
Keys: economy, market, currency, beef, wood, wool, factories, fishing, trade, industry, imports, exports, commerce, goods, vegetation
Wail's economy is driven by its diverse industries, each tied to its unique geography. The Mount Lush district produces high-quality wool and beef, which are major exports to other regions of Calixox. The Whispering Woods supplies timber and vegetation, while the Banshee district runs factories and manages water trade through the Gulf. Fishing is also a significant industry along the Gulf coast, though the waters are said to be haunted. The city's economy is largely self-sufficient, with minimal reliance on imports. Trade routes connect Wail to other settlements across the continent, though the city is somewhat isolated due to its location between tundra and forest. The Wailen family oversees economic policy, ensuring that wealth remains concentrated within the city's borders. The local currency is the Wailen Mark, backed by the city's resources.
- #6Cultureconstant
Keys: church of wail, superstition, folktales, pysland, festival, catholicism, religion, myths, tradition, banshee, asylum, society, custom, rumors, holiday, culture
Wail's culture is a blend of practicality, superstition, and deep-rooted tradition. The dominant religion is a form of Catholicism practiced at the Church of Wail, though many citizens also hold folk beliefs tied to the city's founding myths. The most prominent figure in local legend is the banshee, rumored to be tied to the Wailen family line. Stories of banshee wails echoing from the Gulf are common, and many believe the city's name itself is a reference to this supernatural connection. The city is also obsessed with the rumor that escapees from Pysland's mental asylums migrated to Wail, contributing to the high number of unnatural deaths and the pervasive feeling that something is not quite right. This has created a culture of "don't ask questions" and "whatever happens in Wail stays in Wail." The people are wary of outsiders and maintain a tight-knit, insular community. The annual Festival of the Banshee is held each winter, celebrating the city's founding with music, storytelling, and offerings made to the Gulf.
- #7Locations
Keys: church of wail, landmarks, places, locations, lavender diner, fruits basket, mr. bane, banshee library, wails forest
Notable locations in Wail include:
Lavender Diner: A cozy, popular diner known for its lavender-infused pastries and warm atmosphere. It's a gathering spot for locals and travelers alike, often serving as a neutral ground for conversations that would be had nowhere else.
Banshee Library: A grand, Gothic structure located in Minerva Middle. The library is said to hold texts on the city's founding, local folklore, and even banned books about the banshee. Its interior is filled with dark stone archways and shadowy alcoves, where glowing blue lights have occasionally been reported—whether from lanterns or something else is uncertain. Its librarian is the mysterious Mr. Bane.
Church of Wail: A modest cathedral that serves as the center of religious life in the city. It blends traditional Catholic architecture with local motifs, including carvings of banshees and native wildlife. It is run by the Wailen family.
Fruit's Basket: A popular bar in the Banshee District known for its eclectic clientele and potent drinks. It is said that the bar takes its name from the Wailen family's original trade. Many deals are made here that are best left unspoken.
Wail's Forest: The dense, misty forest bordering the Whispering Woods district. The forest is characterized by towering pines, large moss-covered rocks, and an ever-present fog that muffles sound. It is a place of both bounty and danger, known for its unusual wildlife and strange occurrences. Many of the city's rumors originate from the forest, where the line between reality and hallucination blurs.
- #8Librarian
Keys: mysterious, wailen, founder, kind, bane, mr. bane, old, confidant, immortal, omniscient, librarian, history
Mr. Bane is the mysterious librarian of Wail, a figure who suddenly appeared during the early beginnings of the city. It is joked that he assisted the founders in building it from the ground up. He knows everything about the city, from its flora right down to its deep history. It is not uncommon to hear rumors of him hiding in the shadows, acting as though he is some omniscient being. Nobody truly knows where he came from, only his name and occupation—not even his age. Some believe he is tied to the banshee, others think he is an asylum escapee who found refuge, and a few whisper he is immortal. Regardless of the speculation, Mr. Bane is well-regarded and thought of fondly despite his air of mystery. To Wail citizens, he is a kind, gentle man who the people know they can confide in. He is often sought out for advice, and his word carries significant weight.
- #9Necraflora
Keys: infected, contamination, toxins, hallucinations, poison, neurotoxins, necraflora, whispering woods, hallucinogens, gulf of miasrei, flora, brain chemistry, fungi
Necraflora is a rare and dangerous type of fungi that grows under the trees and along the Gulf in the Whispering Woods district. It contains potent neurotoxins and hallucinogens that alter brain chemistry permanently. The fungi thrives in wet, low-light areas with pre-existing vegetation, as it steals nutrients from the roots of trees and other plants. It often appears as glowing, ethereal patches on moss-covered rocks and tree bases, pulsing with a soft, unnatural light. Over time, the Necraflora has spread to some of the forest animals that drink frequently or reside near the Gulf. Its toxins contaminate the roots of trees and other vegetation, mimicking a healthy root system. If consumed, the infected roots introduce the toxins into the victim's system, causing permanent neurological damage. Those affected often experience vivid hallucinations, paranoia, and a slow deterioration of cognitive function. The city has tried to contain the spread, but the Necraflora continues to grow, contributing to Wail's reputation as a place of strange afflictions and madness.
- #10Narlia
Keys: mountain, purple petals, lethal, deceiving beauty, poison, venom, narlia, maroon stems, death, bad luck, flora, venomous, narlia flowers, mount lush
Narlia flowers are exclusive to Wail, growing primarily in the Mount Lush district's mountain ranges. They are extremely beautiful but also highly venomous. The flowers gain nutrients through the bugs that feast on decaying life, which the plant then converts into venom secreted through its thorns. They are said to bring bad luck due to their deceiving beauty. Narlia flowers have large, sharp, layered purple petals that mimic feathers, with maroon stems and centers. At night, they glow with a soft, saturated light, making them visible from a distance. The venom they produce is sweet and musky, easily luring wildlife—and occasionally people—into contact. A single scratch from a thorn can cause paralysis, hallucinations, and death within hours. Despite their danger, some collectors seek them out for their beauty, and there is a black market for the venom. The Wailen family has made it illegal to harvest or sell Narlia, but the law is difficult to enforce in the remote mountain regions.
- #11Rumoursconstant
Keys: superstition, folktales, pysland, unnatural deaths, secret, ghost, myths, curse, haunted, banshee, low crime, asylum, mystery, rumors, conspiracy
Wail is a city built on rumors. The most persistent is that escapees from Pysland's mental asylums migrated to Wail and have since integrated into society, spreading their madness through the generations. This rumor is fueled by the city's high number of unnatural deaths, yet its low crime rate—suggesting that whatever is killing people is not being reported or investigated. Other common rumors include:
-
The Banshee's Curse: The Wailen family made a deal with a banshee to found the city, and the creature still protects the family, appearing as a glowing blue spirit in dark places, wailing when danger approaches.
-
The Immortal Librarian: Mr. Bane has been alive for centuries and secretly controls the city from the shadows, his knowledge of the city's history far too detailed for a normal man.
-
The Gulf Dwellers: Something lives in the Gulf of Miasrei, and it feeds on bodies thrown into the water. The eerie stillness of the Gulf's reflective surface is said to be a sign of its presence.
-
The Necraflora's Gift: Some believe the fungi can be used to achieve enlightenment, and secret cults harvest it for rituals, often disappearing into the forest and returning with a "glitchy," altered look.
-
The Forest of Lost Souls: Those who enter Wail's Forest alone are never quite the same when they return—if they return at all. The mist and the glowing flora create an environment where reality itself seems to glitch and warp.

- #12Founding
Keys: founders, discovery, wailen, wail family, timeline, past, adrena, rebellion era, 1767, calixox, founding, origin, history
Wail was founded in 1767 during the Rebellion Era, a turbulent period in the Calixox continent's history. The Wail family originally came from Adrena, a distant region known for its academic institutions and political upheaval. The family fled the rebellion and discovered Calixox, choosing the junction between the tundra and forest as the site for their new settlement. According to legend, the family was guided by a banshee that led them to safety, appearing as a glowing blue spirit in the mist. The first generation of Wailens established the city as a refuge, building the districts and laying the foundations for the city's governance. The family has ruled for 13 generations, maintaining their hold through wealth, secrecy, and the city's isolation. Over the centuries, Wail has grown from a small settlement to a city of 3 million, but its insular culture and deep-seated superstitions have remained.
- #13Mistconstant
Keys: mist, mood, aesthetic, glowing, pixelated, gloom, atmosphere, painterly, visual atmosphere, dreamlike, digital
The visual atmosphere of Wail is defined by a heavy, ever-present mist that clings to the forest, the Gulf, and the city itself. The light is often dim and overcast, giving everything a melancholic, muted quality. The Whispering Woods are dense and damp, with towering pines and large moss-covered rocks that serve as hosts for the glowing Necraflora fungi. At night, the forest transforms into a dreamlike landscape of saturated, glowing colors—the purple Narlia flowers pulsing with an unnatural light, the blue spores of Necraflora drifting through the air like fireflies.
The aesthetic has a slightly "uncanny" or grainy quality, as if the very fabric of reality is unstable. This visual effect caused by the mist reflects the pervasive rumors of Pysland asylum escapees and the hallucinogenic effects of the native flora. The architecture: from the grand, gothic castle perched on Mount Lush to the weathered, skeletal piers of the Banshee District, feels ancient and decaying, slowly being reclaimed by the forest and the Gulf. The dark stone archways and shadowy alcoves of the Banshee Library and the Wailen castle are haunted by glowing blue lights, said to be the banshee's presence or perhaps the hallucinations of those exposed to Necraflora. The overall effect is a city that feels beautiful but dangerous, mystical but decaying, and full of secrets better left unspoken.
