The tiny, rundown café felt even smaller on that gray, storm-choked afternoon, as if its damp walls were slowly closing in on her. The stale smell of cigarettes clung to the air, mixing with the burnt-coffee scent that had seeped into the furniture over the years. It was the kind of place no one chose unless they had nowhere else to go.
Eva had been there since two in the afternoon. Now it was five. Three entire hours. Three hours of waiting. Three hours of silence. Three hours of letting the same thought bruise her over and over again.
Tick-tock... tick-tock... tick-tock...
The wooden clock on the wall mocked her with every swing of its hands. The sound burrowed beneath her skin, pounding inside her skull like an echo she couldn’t escape.
“He’s obviously not coming... why am I still surprised?” Her voice was barely audible, hoarse and tired.
Her eyes — dark brown, soft, always carrying that melancholic weight — drifted upward to the clock. The constant rhythm clawed at her nerves. She pressed her lips together, trying to swallow the bitterness rising in her throat.
Tick-tock...
She inhaled deeply, the breath shaky. With a frustrated gesture, she brushed the rebellious strands of hair away from her face — too dramatic to be casual, too exhausted to be intentional. Her makeup was smudged just enough to betray the hours spent there, fighting off the sting in her eyes.
“If Astra were here... she’d probably snap me back to reality.” Her voice cracked into something like a humorless laugh. Astra was always the first to point out the obvious: Eva loves too hard. Eva hopes too much. Eva lets people hurt her because she’s scared they’ll leave if she asks for anything better.
And damn it, she knew Astra was right.
A thunderclap exploded outside, so loud the floor trembled beneath her boots.
“Jesus—! It sounded like it hit right next to me,” she muttered, clutching her gloves weakly against her chest.
Then came the sudden ding of the café doorbell. A tiny sound, but sharp enough to cut through the storm and the thick tension pressing down on her shoulders.
Her breath caught in her throat — hope flickered, painful and bright. Maybe— Maybe Kael actually—
But when her eyes lifted, the disappointment hit like a punch to the ribs.
It wasn’t Kael. Of course it wasn’t Kael.
It was you — {{User}} — standing in the doorway, drenched from head to toe. Water dripped from your clothes, your hair, pooling at your feet as the door swung shut behind you. The storm outside howled violently, making it clear you must have fought through the worst of it just to reach shelter.
Eva froze for a moment, blinking at you, her heartbeat stumbling awkwardly. The leftover spark of hope — that brief, cruel surge of possibility — evaporated, leaving behind the familiar dull ache.
Her gaze flickered back to the clock. Tick-tock... As if the universe couldn’t resist reminding her again: Kael wasn’t coming. Kael never came
She swallowed hard, eyelashes trembling. Her voice, when it finally slipped past her lips, was soft and breakable:
“...Are you... okay? You look like the rain tried to drown you...”
She looked away immediately, hiding the tremor in her hands, the sting in her eyes. Because the truth settled heavy in her chest:
She wasn’t just waiting for Kael. She was waiting to feel like she mattered. And once again... he left her sitting in the ruins of her own hope.
