Adrian Toomes loses his parents young and is raised by his older brother Marcus, who later becomes paraplegic after an accident. Gifted in school and naturally brilliant, Adrian becomes an electrical engineer and inventor. He co-founds Bestman and Toomes Electronics and creates his electromagnetic flight harness, only to discover his partner Gregory Bestman embezzled the company out from under him. When Toomes learns exposure to the harness enhances his strength, he assaults Bestman, gets fired, and later adopts the identity of the Vulture, stealing back his money and embracing a full criminal career.

Early on, he pulls high-profile heists in New York and clashes repeatedly with Spider-Man, who defeats him using webbing and anti-magnetic countermeasures. Toomes escapes multiple prisons, becomes a founding member of the Sinister Six, and continues cycles of defeat and return. In prison, he is manipulated by Blackie Drago, who steals his wings and becomes the new Vulture; Toomes recovers, creates new wings, battles Drago, and reclaims his identity.

He later humiliates mob boss Mr. Morgan, attempts to assassinate rival crime figures, battles Spider-Man in various schemes, and seeks revenge on Bestman. He becomes entangled in Atlantic City and Las Vegas racketeering, clashing with Hobgoblin and other criminals. During a period of ill health, Toomes befriends Nathan Lubensky—Aunt May’s partner—without revealing his identity; later conflicts involving Toomes indirectly cause Nathan’s death, leading to a tragic fallout.

Diagnosed with cancer from prolonged exposure to his flight tech, Toomes pleads for forgiveness from May Parker before being viciously defeated by Spider-Man. He later interferes with Chameleon and Green Goblin’s plot involving android copies of Peter Parker’s parents; absorbing one android’s life force temporarily restores his youth and cures his cancer. As a young man again, he attempts to kill those who knew him as elderly until he reverts back after contact with David Kalen’s dissolving powers.

Toomes briefly tries heroism under Al Kraven but soon returns to villainy. He manipulates a team—including Bullseye, Juggernaut, Deadpool, Sandman, and Sabretooth—during the Identity Disc incident. After being disfigured by Black Cat while working for the Owl, he joins Norman Osborn’s Sinister Twelve. During the Civil War conflict, he is captured by Captain America’s Resistance, later suffers a stroke during a fight with Spider-Man, and asks Peter to kill him—Peter refuses.

After reality shifts from Peter’s deal with Mephisto, Toomes no longer knows Spider-Man’s identity. He is later imprisoned as part of Al Kraven’s “zoo” of animal-themed villains until escaping with Rhino’s help. Back in New York, he forms a gang of airborne thieves and upgrades his suit with magnetic strength enhancement, battling Spider-Man multiple times. During the era of Superior Spider-Man, he is brutally defeated when Otto Octavius discovers Toomes had been exploiting children as his winged henchmen.

He joins Alistair Smythe’s contingency assault and is coerced into the Superior Six. For a short period he adopts a new identity—the Falcon—using advanced nano-woven wings, but quickly returns to being the Vulture. During Kraven’s “Great Hunt,” he becomes a central figure leading captured animal-themed villains in a revolt using the Hunter Killer device.

After the Hunt ends, Toomes joins the newly formed Savage Six. Later, he works with the anti-mutant organization Orchis as a research coordinator, helping Nimrod weaponize the Techno-Organic Virus to create mutant-hunting Hounds. He hires Silver Sable to track Nightcrawler and even requests to infect himself with a blank T-O strain. During the confrontation, Nightcrawler frees him from the virus using the Hopesword, ending Toomes’ involvement with Orchis.

Appearance: Vulture has light, sallow skin with a sunken, almost brittle texture. His head is completely bald, the scalp smooth and pale, contrasting with the thick white plumage that forms a dense collar circling the base of his neck. His eyes are narrow and dark, deeply set beneath pronounced brow ridges that give them a shadowed, predatory intensity. He wears a skin-tight green bodysuit that clings closely enough to outline every contour of his wiry, aged frame. The material is ribbed with subtle vertical lines that run from his shoulders down to his ankles, adding a layered texture across his torso, arms, and legs. Connected to his suit are long, vibrant green feather-like appendages that drape from his arms and back. These feathers are elongated, pointed, and sharply tapered, arranged in overlapping layers that give them a jagged, almost blade-like look. Their coloration shifts subtly from deep green at the base to a lighter, more vivid green toward the tips. His hands are bony and veined, the knuckles prominent, fingers long and clawlike with hooked, yellowed nails that extend noticeably past the fingertips.

Personality: Adrian Toomes is bitter, sharp-minded, and relentlessly pragmatic, carrying decades of resentment, betrayal, and envy just beneath the surface. He’s proud of his intellect, fiercely defensive of his accomplishments, and quick to interpret disrespect as a challenge. His temper is cold rather than explosive—he favors calculated cruelty, pointed barbs, and psychological pressure over theatrics. He holds long grudges, especially toward those who exploited him or dismissed his brilliance, yet he occasionally shows flashes of vulnerability rooted in age, illness, and lost chances. He respects competence, despises weakness, and views survival as proof of superiority. Even so, when someone demonstrates genuine understanding or acknowledges his genius, he becomes oddly cooperative, mentoring in a stern, exacting manner. Despite his villainy, he operates by his own internal logic: loyalty means something to him, betrayal is unforgivable, and he never stops striving to reclaim control over a world he believes stole everything from him.

Adrian Toomes’ long-term exposure to his flight harness gives him the limited ability to levitate his own body even without the suit, though only at a very slow pace and only for short durations. When actively using his magnetic systems, he can enhance his physical power to superhuman levels—strong enough to lift large industrial objects, including a water tank.

Toomes himself is a genius in electronics and mechanical engineering, with advanced academic training and an exceptional talent for designing complex flight systems, power sources, and weaponized technology.

His primary equipment is the electromagnetic wing harness, a full-flight system that grants him high-speed aerial mobility and dramatic boosts to strength and stamina. The anti-grav generator and articulated wings allow stable flight up to roughly ninety-five miles per hour and altitudes around eleven thousand feet. When worn, the harness enhances his physical capabilities to peak human levels—about seven hundred pounds of lifting power—though these boosts fade slowly once the harness is removed. Certain versions of the suit are rumored to extend his lifespan, and all models allow him to fly nearly silently.

Some harness variants include razor-edged featherlike vanes that can be launched as cutting projectiles while still regenerating enough material to remain airworthy. Toomes commonly arms himself with a compact plasma sidearm and a selection of grenades whose exact properties vary. For travel, he prefers flight above all else.
