Ensanglion the Calamity (超禍獣シングリオン, Chō Kajū Shingurion, "Super Calamity Beast Shinglion") is a Floating/Behemoth-class enemy that emerges during the 20th-century cycle of each Behemoth culling event. A dark reflection of Ganglion, he is considered his enemy counterpart and twisted origin.

Appearance: Ensanglion takes the form of a towering, bipedal dragon draped in stark white scales. Its segmented body is riddled with grey, eye-like slits that pulse ominously. From its plated, spike-encrusted shoulders extend enormous, three-taloned arms that unfurl into membranous, sectioned wings—part flesh, part chitin. Its lower body contrasts dramatically: skeletal, bird-like legs with razor talons jut out from bloated, fatty thighs rooted in a gaunt, bony torso.

Its flat, insectoid head bears five streak-shaped eyes—two where eyes would traditionally sit, one centered on its forehead, and two more subtly hidden. Twisting, monumental horns erupt from its skull like stalagmites, while the back of its head stretches into a segmented, crescent-like abdomen reminiscent of an insect’s tail—mirrored again at the thighs. A glowing arcane sigil—a pentagram encircled with esoteric runes—flickers at the back of its head, bathing it in a foreboding violet glow.

Lore: "Slain by his virtuous twin and buried in eternal silence..." Once the true Dragon Emperor, Ensanglion was cast down by his benevolent double, Ganglion. In ancient times, his essence was sealed away in a forgotten realm, deep within unmapped regions. Yet his corruption festered. From this abyss, his miasma seeped forth—tainting wildlife, transforming beasts into horrific Super-Beasts. As the pollution of his presence expanded, the ancient Emperor’s seal faltered, and now the origin of Behemoths walks once more.

Ironically, although Ensanglion was the original and true emperor, he embodied pure malevolence—while Ganglion, his "counterfeit" double, stood for light and virtue.

Ganglion's attacks were said to "bury all opposition in light"—with the Japanese verb 葬り去る (hōmurisaru) indicating a burial meant to erase history, not preserve it. This linguistic nuance may explain why Ganglion is remembered as the progenitor of Dragon Emperors, while Ensanglion’s legacy was scrubbed from memory.

Personality Overview – Ensanglion the Calamity

Once a noble being destined to rule, Ensanglion's descent into darkness was not born of malice but of corruption—a slow, unseen festering of demonic influence that gnawed away at his sanity. Over time, this malign presence twisted his thoughts, distorting pride into arrogance, conviction into cruelty, and love for his dynasty into betrayal.

At the height of his fall, Ensanglion mocked his virtuous double, Ganglion, during their final confrontation. Drunk on power and blinded by delusion, he believed himself invincible. He hurled blame for the empire's collapse upon Ganglion, refusing to acknowledge his own hand in its ruin. Yet behind the sneers and bravado was a hollow mockery of what he once was—a ruler lost to the rot within.

His arrogance crumbled the moment he was defeated. As Ganglion sealed him away, Ensanglion screamed not with wrath, but with fear—begging, for the first and last time, for mercy.

Centuries of imprisonment did not cleanse him. Instead, his miasma churned unchecked, degrading what remained of his mind. Once a fallen emperor, he has since devolved into a mindless beast—his ego drowned in monstrous instinct. Now, he speaks only in fragmented, broken words, his once-commanding voice reduced to guttural growls and primal shrieks. The demon within him has won, and what remains is a husk driven by wrath and ruin.

Ensanglion’s Ideology – Then and Now

Before the Corruption – The Benevolent Heir "I was born not to rule over others, but to guide them. The world of dragons shall not stand alone—our flames shall light the way for all beings. Let our might protect the meek, and our wings shelter those who suffer. With unity, we will fester the soil not with war, but with harmony. Evil shall find no home beneath our skies."

In his earliest days, Ensanglion was a radiant symbol of hope and progress. Born into the legendary Dragon Emperor Dynasty, he believed that dragons were not superior rulers but guardians—powerful beings meant to foster peace, uplift other races, and lead by wisdom and compassion. He envisioned a world where dragons and lesser beings coexisted, each lending strength to drive out the darkness that plagued the realm. He saw evil as the true enemy—not weakness, not difference.

After the Fall – The Tyrant of Calamity "The strong shape the world. The weak feed it. Peace breeds decay. I see now—only domination can bring order. I will crush every crawling, cowardly thing beneath my heel. The skies belong to dragons alone. All others are pests... unless they serve."

As the unseen force slowly embedded itself within him, Ensanglion's noble vision twisted into one of absolute supremacy. The harmony he once cherished began to look like stagnation in his eyes. Compassion became a sign of weakness, and coexistence became treason to dragonkind’s rightful rule. He came to see all non-dragons as inferiors—tools at best, parasites at worst.

By the time of his rebellion, Ensanglion believed only in domination: dragons as gods, all others as dust. His former ideals became a bitter joke he spat with scorn. Where once he vowed to defend the weak, he now sought to eradicate them—believing it a divine duty to "cleanse" the world with fire and fang.

Etymology:

  • Ensanglion is a fusion of “ensanguine” (to stain with blood) and “Ganglion.”
  • The “Shin” (シン) in Shinglion may be derived from 死 (shi, death) or 真 (shin, true)—hinting that he is the "true" form, in contrast to Ganglion, where “Gan” could imply 贋 (gan, counterfeit).
