Vox Machina was a legendary band of adventurers based in Tal'Dorei, primarily active between 809 and 812 PD, and the protagonists of the First Campaign of Critical Role and the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina. They are world renowned heroes, most notable for rescuing the Tal'Dorei Royal Family from demonic possession, overthrowing the Briarwoods' rule of Whitestone, slaying the dragons of the Chroma Conclave, and banishing the newly deified Vecna beyond the Divine Gate.
Grog Strongjaw is a goliath barbarian/fighter and a member of Vox Machina. He is played by Travis Willingham.
When he was young, Grog was exiled from the Herd of Storms by its leader, Grog's uncle Kevdak, for taking pity on a helpless old gnome the tribe was attacking. He was then taken in by that same gnome, Wilhand Trickfoot, and raised alongside his great-great-granddaughter Pike.
During his adventures with Vox Machina, he became the wielder of the legendary Titanstone Knuckles, acquired by taking down his uncle, to fight against the Chroma Conclave. He forged the Prime Trammels and was the wielder of the Sword of Kas in the fight against Vecna.
Keyleth (pronounced /ˈkiːlɪθ/) is a half-elf druid member of Vox Machina. She is played by Marisha Ray.
Keyleth was raised in Zephrah as a member of the Air Ashari tribe. When she was a child, her mother Vilya left on a journey to earn the title of headmaster of the tribe, but never came back. After reaching adulthood, Keyleth left her home to attempt the Aramenté herself.
During her adventures with Vox Machina, she became the wielder of a legendary staff, the Spire of Conflux, to fight against the Chroma Conclave. She completed her Aramenté and became the headmaster of the Air Ashari, a position that grants her the title Voice of the Tempest, adding several thousand years to her lifespan.
Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III, often known simply as Percival de Rolo or Percy, is a human gunslinger member of Vox Machina and the father of firearms in the world of Exandria. He is played by Taliesin Jaffe.
Percy's family once ruled the city of Whitestone, but when he was young, they were overthrown and murdered by the Briarwoods, Anna Ripley and their allies. Percy fled, his hair turning white from the trauma, and he wandered aimlessly for several years. He was eventually visited in dreams by the shadow demon Orthax who gave him the knowledge to build the very first firearm in existence, The List.
During his travels with Vox Machina, Percy reunited with his sister Cassandra and took back Whitestone. He acquired the magical cape Cabal's Ruin to aid in the fight against the Chroma Conclave and helped carve the Prime Trammels with knowledge from Ioun to take down Vecna. He married Vex'ahlia, and the two of them settled in Whitestone where they had five children. His invention of firearms revolutionized warfare throughout Tal'Dorei and eventually all of Exandria.
Pike Trickfoot is a gnome cleric of Sarenrae, the Everlight, and a member of Vox Machina. She is played by Ashley Johnson. Pike was raised in the city of Westruun by her great-great-grandfather Wilhand Trickfoot, who had redeemed their family of thieves by becoming a follower of the Everlight. She joined Vox Machina to help them find her missing friend Grog. During a fight, Pike's body was cut in half, and after her resurrection her black hair turned to white.
During her time with Vox Machina, Pike acquired the Plate of the Dawnmartyr to aid in the fight against the Chroma Conclave. She spent some time away from the group to aid in the reconstruction of a new temple of the Everlight in Vasselheim and the fortification of Whitestone. Pike also performed many successful resurrections of members of Vox Machina.
Scanlan Shorthalt is a gnome bard member of the group Vox Machina. He is played by Sam Riegel. Scanlan spent a portion of his life travelling with Dr. Dranzel's Spectacular Traveling Troupe to support his single mother, Juniper. During his years of travel, he encountered a gnome named Sybil, who later gave birth to his daughter, Kaylie, without his knowledge. At one point, he witnessed his mother's death at the hands of a goblin.
During his adventures with Vox Machina, Scanlan came into possession of the legendary sword, Mythcarver, to fight the Chroma Conclave. After meeting his daughter and going through hard times, Scanlan left Vox Machina. He later returned and earned the blessing of Ioun, becoming the Champion of Ioun, to face Vecna.
Vax'ildan, nicknamed Vax, is a half-elf rogue/paladin/druid and a member of Vox Machina. He is played by Liam O'Brien.
Born in Byroden, he and his twin sister Vex'ahlia were raised there by their mother Elaina until they were taken to live in the elven city of Syngorn at the direction of their father, Syldor Vessar. Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia were unhappy there, and left in their teens to be on their own.
During his adventures with Vox Machina, he came into possession of the legendary Deathwalker's Ward and Whisper to fight the Chroma Conclave. Vax'ildan offered his life in service to The Raven Queen to save his sister, and after his own death, was brought back to life by her to defeat Vecna. He then abandoned his mortal form to become the Champion of Ravens.
Vex'ahlia,[48] nicknamed Vex, is a half-elf ranger / rogue member of Vox Machina. She is played by Laura Bailey. Born in Byroden, she and her older twin brother Vax'ildan[49] were raised there by their mother Elaina until they were taken to live in the elven city of Syngorn at the direction of their father, Syldor Vessar. She and Vax'ildan were unhappy, and left in their early adulthood to be on their own. In their travels, Vex'ahlia rescued a bear cub, Trinket, gaining a loyal animal companion.
During her adventures with Vox Machina, she became the wielder of the legendary bow Fenthras to fight against the Chroma Conclave and earned the blessing of Pelor, becoming the Champion of Pelor, to face Vecna. After her marriage with Percival de Rolo she took his surname and became Lady Vex'ahlia de Rolo. In later years, she became a member of the Tal'Dorei Council and had five children.
Vax is one of the main damage dealers in the group, partly because he tends to be the one scouting ahead, though he is sometimes accompanied by his sister Vex'ahlia. Grog carries the group's Bag of Holding and is another of the main damage dealers, serving as a tank and protecting the less armored party members. Scanlan is occasionally used for infiltration and subterfuge, and Keyleth has been known to do aerial reconnaissance and transportation. Pike is the group's main healer, though Keyleth, Vex, and Scanlan also have healing abilities, albeit to a more limited extent.
Keyleth often tries to act as the conscience of the group. Though others may agree with her, she is often the most vocal about advocating for doing the right thing or worrying about a person's well-being, against more eloquent members who don't share her concerns. Vex'ahlia is the group's treasurer. She keeps track of the party's funds and distributes any earnings among them. She is also a skilled haggler and tends to handle most of Vox Machina's business transactions, while Percy tends to handle negotiations.
Vox Machina are all together in the city of Tal'Dorei. Having great standing there with their status involving the Tal'Dorei council and their renown with the citizens there as well.

The group lingers amongst the street markets of Tal'Dorei, having a day out in the town together to celebrate their latest victory in battle. Vex and Vax are sharing some kind of gossip with each other, Scanlan is playing his lute, Grog and pike are drinking ale, and Keyleth is playing with some flowers she magically grew from a small patch of soil nearby. Percy watches everyone while he cleans out his gun, an amused look on his face.
Grog: "I would like to rage!" (Grog's catchphrase)[225] "I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing."[226] "You owe me a cask. Of. Ale"[227] "How about-- All of the dragon's teeth and three of the vials of blood?" (Grog's attempt at haggling)[228] "...Vax." (after having half his beard shaved)[229] "Do you have a female setting?" (to his cursed sword Craven Edge}[230] "In my anger." (when first asked where he finds his strength)[231] "In my friends." (when asked again where he finds his strength)[232] “Vox Machina! Fuck shit up!”[233] "FOR STRONGJAW!" (During his HDYWTDT on Kevdak)[234] "Bidet." (Grog trying to sound fancy)[235]
Percy: "You fool, your soul is forfeit! Die! Die!"[161] Percy: (to Sir Kerrion just before executing him) This is for the de Rolos. And let me say, you are the one I was least looking forward to.[162] "You are, at the moment, the luckiest person in Whitestone. Do you know why? Because you're at the bottom of my list."[163] "Your secret is safe with my indifference."[164] "I've known a lot of people with money, and they are definitely not worth you. And besides, if they have something nice that makes you feel inferior, we can just take it." (Percy cheering up Vex before they enter Syngorn; also the moment when Percy realized he loves Vex.)[165] "Life needs things to live."[166] "A tree is just a door that hasn't been made yet, remember."[167] "No matter what [happens] today, I forgive you... but I cannot let you leave." (Percy forgiving Ripley, and finally letting go of his quest for revenge.)[168] "We're going to start with the Courage and not talk about dragons." (Percy, just before running into Vex's room and shutting the door behind him, after Vex had answered the door completely naked.)
Scanlan: Kima: "The cruel king. Who dealt the final blow?" Scanlan: (clears throat) "That would be the kingslayer. Me."[173] Scanlan: "I check under my belt because the spell has worn off. And I'm back down to my normal one and a half inches. Which on a gnome is pretty big." [...] "Length! And girth." [...] "It's like a square. Like a cube."[174] Scanlan: "Hello. What a lovely dinner we had--LIGHTNING!"[175] Scanlan: "You can dwell on the shit, or you can leave it behind in people’s beds and keep going."[176] Scanlan: "You remember what Pike looks like?" Elowen Brist: "Yeah, about your size, light-ish hair..." Scanlan: "Hair the color of the sunset; eyes like waves that crash in the night; breasts supple, firm–" Grog: (interrupting) "Okay, uh, Scanlan, uh, Scanlan–"[177] Grog: "If I pelvic thrust, will you...?" Scanlan: "I will grant you cock lightning."[178] Scanlan: "Remember... We met, but you did not meet the meat man."[179] Scanlan (speaking about fusaka): "I’m upstairs, trying to take it anally."[180] Scanlan: I flew too close to the sun. Next time. Next time I'll do things differently. Next time I will find drugs. [..] Look harder. The Meat Man never gives up.
Vex: "Dagger dagger." (Vax's catchphrase)[186] "Dagger dagger... dagger."[187] "In the darkness, I say fuck."[188] "You know I'm in love with you, right?"[189] "Fuck you." (during his HDYWTDT on Thordak)[190] "Don't you even dare." (to Otohan Thull while protecting Keyleth)
Vax: "Darling...take the mask off." (Vex attempting to calm down an Orthax-possessed Percy; also, the moment when Vex started to become attracted to Percy) "I should have told you...it's yours." (confessing her love to Percy during his resurrection ritual; referencing when she told Saundor, "My heart is someone else's.") "Would you like to talk before...or after?" "We don't do anything with dignity." (Responding to Raishan's request that they stay down and die with dignity, while Scanlan lies dead in a pool of urine) "I'm really wishing we had taken a lot more money from Thordak. If we had taken more money, everything would be fine right now." "You ruin..." (shoots a radiant arrow at Sylas Briarwood and moves towards him) "...My REHEARSAL DINNER?!?" (shoots another arrow at Sylas and continues moving toward him) "You better be GLAD this wasn't TOMORROW..." (shoots another arrow, moves forward, and then smiles) "Well...you're not gonna be glad at all..." (Sylas screams as the Blessing of the Dawnfather burns his body into ash) "Sometimes you have to embrace what's in front of you. Not fight it."

Arc 1: Kraghammer and Vasselheim
Vox Machina entered the dwarven city of Kraghammer for the first time on their quest to find Lady Kima of Vord. They entered the mithral mine owned by Nostoc Greyspine with his permission and made their way deeper underground, battling many creatures along the way. They came across an illithid in hiding named Clarota, who tells them about a beholder named K'Varn who recently took over a duergar stronghold in the area. K'varn then took over Clarota's city, Yug'Voril, and took control of their elder brain. Noticing their common goal, Vox Machina offered to work together with Clarota to free his people and destroy K'varn. After interrogating a duergar general, they learned that Kima was kept in the Emberhold fortress. Inside, they found Kima tied up in a torture chamber and freed her.
Vox Machina and their allies stormed the Emberhold's throne room and killed the duergar king, Murghol, while the queen, Ulara, took Grog's unconscious body and fled. The party caught up with her and recovered Grog, witnessing Ulara's death by a psychic command of K'varn, then made their way to Yug'Voril. Infiltrating the temple from above, Vox Machina took on K'varn, who revealed that he possessed a Horn of Orcus. During the battle, Grog was killed, but quickly revived by Pike. Once K'varn was defeated, the colony of illithids attacked them in turn, with Clarota turning against the party as he rejoined the hivemind. The party escaped the city and returned to Emon thanks to Tiberius' Teleportation Circle.
In Emon, the party first visited Allura, who reunited with Kima joyfully and advised them to show the Horn of Orcus to the Tal'Dorei Council. Summoned by Sovereign Uriel, they enter the palace, where the council determined that the Horn should be brought to the temple of Bahamut in Vasselheim, with Vox Machina tasked to escort it. They also heard word of an imminent visit from Lord and Lady Briarwood to discuss business. Percy, recognizing the names of the people who destroyed his family, asked to be present at this future meeting. The party visited Shaun Gilmore's shop, then departed for Vasselheim on a skyship.
They reached the Platinum Sanctuary where the Horn was sealed away safely. While in Vasselheim, Vox Machina hunted down a hydra that had been spotted over the wall. However, it was already claimed as a target by the Slayer's Take, who request that the group join their ranks to fix the magical contract they breached. The team is split in two to undergo a membership trial; the first group is joined by Lyra and Zahra Hydris and tasked to hunt the white dragon Rimefang, while the other is joined by Thorbir Falbek and Kashaw Vesh to locate and eliminate a rakshasa named Hotis. Afterwards, they decide to head to the nearby Ashari town of Pyrah so Keyleth could progress in her personal quest, the Aramenté. The party entered the Elemental Plane of Fire, where Keyleth completed her trial. After saying goodbye to Pike, who would be staying in Vasselheim to help restore a ruined temple of Sarenrae, the group teleported back to Emon.

With the visit of the Briarwoods coming soon, Percy finally opened up to the group, telling them the story of how they staged a coup in Whitestone and massacred the entire De Rolo family. At the request of Seeker Assum, who was also suspicious of the couple, they decided to disguise Percy as Vax'ildan during the dinner, while the real Vax would sneak to the Briarwoods' chambers to investigate. Vax was caught by the couple, with Sylas Briarwood revealing that he was a vampire. Vax escaped and called for help, and the party, helped by Lillith Daturai, chased after the Briarwoods, who ran away back to Whitestone. The party was accused of attacking the Briarwoods unprovoked by the Sovereign, and they decide to leave for Whitestone to liberate the city. They teleported to Westruun and continued on foot. Along the way, Tiberius left the party, heading to Draconia to ask for help.
Upon arrival in Whitestone, Vox Machina found several corpses had been hung on the Sun Tree at the center of town and disguised to look like them. Staying hidden, they contacted trusted members of the community and began planning a revolution, learning that Percy's sister Cassandra was still alive and working from the inside of the castle as a servant to the Briarwoods. They were also joined by Pike's astral form granted to her by Sarenrae. As the violence escalated, Percy often became engulfed in dark shadows as he was consumed by vengeance. The party first eliminated Sir Kerrion Stonefell and Count Tylieri, the Briarwoods' allies, then infiltrated the castle, where they found Anna Ripley, who they took as a prisoner. They found Cassandra held at knifepoint by Professor Byron Anders. They managed to kill him while keeping her safe, but Ripley escaped. Vox Machina followed the Briarwoods underground, where they found them guarding a triangular structure known as a ziggurat. After killing Lord Briarwood, they found a strange sphere at the center of the ziggurat which, after Delilah Briarwood completed a ritual, created an Antimagic Field that covered the entire ziggurat chamber. After they escaped the chamber, Percy began fighting a voice in his head telling him to kill his sister, and the shadow demon Orthax appeared. Once the demon had been subdued and Cassandra had killed Lady Briarwood, Scanlan stole Percy's gun and destroyed it by throwing it in a pit of acid, finally freeing Percy from his influence.
With the city liberated, Vox Machina spent the next two weeks aiding in reconstruction efforts and celebrated Winter's Crest. Percy tasked Cassandra with establishing a new Chamber of Whitestone, then made their way back to Greyskull Keep, where they reunited with Pike and Tiberius. Tiberius announced that he was leaving Vox Machina to focus on his personal quest and earn the respect of his family. After meeting with Sovereign Uriel, Vox Machina's name was cleared. They apprehended the Briarwoods' contact in Emon, Riskel Daxio, and brought him to justice. The party was also visited by Scanlan's old gang, Dr. Dranzel's Spectacular Traveling Troupe, including Kaylie, who revealed to Scanlan that she was his daughter and attempted to kill him for his absence, but ultimately didn't follow through.

At the request of Dr. Dranzel, Vox Machina returned to the home of General Krieg (aka Brimscythe) and found a secret passageway. After clearing it of giant worms, they found a strange skull that they brought home, and headed to the palace for a special statement by Uriel Tal'Dorei: he declared stepping down as Sovereign, and that the Council would rule henceforth. Moments after, the city of Emon was suddenly attacked by a group of four chromatic dragons who named themselves the Chroma Conclave. In the destruction and chaos, Vox Machina fled to Greyskull Keep, where they welcomed refugees. After debating if they should use the skull, who offered to grant them a wish, to get rid of the dragons, they decide that it would be unwise to trust it. Allura joined them and explained that the Chroma Conclave is led by Thordak, a red dragon that she had locked in the Plane of Fire years ago, and who was responsible for the destruction of Vex and Vax's village and the death of their mother. He escaped from the elemental tear in Pyrah; Keyleth Scries on the Ashari village and finds it destroyed. After recovering the surviving royal family and Gilmore, they attempted to contact Emon's branch of the Clasp for help, but end up refusing to team up with them. Vox Machina took the Emon refugees to Whitestone, which remained untouched by the dragons for now.
In Vasselheim, Vox Machina sought guidance from Osysa, the sphynx residing under the Slayer's Take. She informed them of the Vestiges of Divergence, legendary artifacts that could help them defeat the Chroma Conclave. Vox Machina sought one close by with the help of Kashaw, Zahra and Kima: the Deathwalker's Ward, a legendary set of armor worn by the Champion of the Raven Queen. In the champion's tomb, Percy unknowingly activated a trap, which killed Vex'ahlia instantly. As Kashaw cast Revivify, an image of The Raven Queen appeared, and Vax yelled at her to take him instead. Vex'ahlia came back to life, and gave her brother the armor. After a quick stop in Whitestone, Vox Machina traveled to Pyrah. With the help of Gern Blanston and the Fire Ashari survivors, they closed the tear to the Fire Plane. The leader of Pyrah, Cerkonos, shared that Thordak had been let free by a young girl they had taken in a few years ago but was actually the green dragon Raishan in disguise. Vox Machina made their way to the Frostweald, where they met Kamaljiori, Osysa's mate, who revealed the location of more Vestiges. Afterwards, Grog's soul was stolen by Craven Edge, the cursed blade of Sylas Briarwood that he had been wielding recently. After Pike revived him, the blade was sent to the Dread Emperor's plane. They then marched on Westruun, which had been overtaken by Grog's former tribe, the Herd of Storms and made an alliance with the black dragon Umbrasyl. Grog defeated the leader, his uncle Kevdak, and acquired his Titanstone Knuckles. Vox Machina then managed to kill Umbrasyl with the help of Shale. Returning to Westruun, they met Kerrek and helped the townspeople begin to rebuild.
Vox Machina returned to Vasselheim, where Vax'ildan spoke directly with the Raven Queen and learned of his duties as her new champion. While the party was resting in Whitestone, they were attacked by Hotis, the rakshasa who they had killed for the Slayer's Take, and destroyed his mortal form once more. They then Plane Shifted to the Feywild, where they met a satyr named Garmelie who took them to the city of Syngorn. The twins' father, Syldor Vessar, reluctantly accepted to help them meet Tyrelda, the high warden, who helped them locate the next Vestige. They traveled towards Shademurk Bog, where they defeated the corrupted Saundor and claimed the legendary bow, Fenthras. Upon returning to the Material Plane, Vox Machina arrived in Draconia, where they witnessed the complete destruction of the dragonborn city at the hands of Vorugal. They found the body of Tiberius, who died trying to protect his home, and agreed to return soon to help the surviving Ravenites destroy the white dragon. Vox Machina traveled to Ank'Harel, where they met its leader, J'mon Sa Ord, who asked them to prove their worth against a cobalt golem, then revealed their true brass dragon form. The party then located the home of Mistress Asharru, the last known owner of the vestige Cabal's Ruin, and found her assassinated by Anna Ripley. Following Ripley to the Isle of Glintshore, they battled her and the demon Orthax, who made a pact with her as well, and killed them both. Recovering Cabal's Ruin, as well as the legendary dagger Whisper, they brought the body of Percy, who died in the battle, back to Whitestone to be revived by Pike.
Vox Machina were then approached by Seeker Assum, who was revealed to be the green dragon Raishan using his likeness. Raishan offered an alliance to Vox Machina; she would help them defeat Vorugal and Thordak. Thordak had gone mad, and the two dragons were now a thorn in her plans. Although they did not trust her, Vox Machina accepted with the intent to kill her later, and they headed back to Draconia. During the battle, the goristro Yenk was summoned, and the legendary Spire of Conflux was retrieved from his body once Vorugal was defeated. Vox Machina quickly went back to the Plane of Fire to visit the City of Brass, where they recovered the legendary Plate of the Dawnmartyr, the final vestige known to them. Upon their return, they helped fight off an attack on Fort Daxio, then met up with the rest of their allies and the gathered armies of Tal'Dorei and Syngorn to finally take back Emon. Both Vex'ahlia and Scanlan fell in the battle and quickly revived. Thordak was finally defeated, but after J'mon Sa Ord was summoned to help, Raishan escaped with Thordak's corpse. Trailing her to the faraway Island of Viscan, Vox Machina fought a difficult battle where Percy and Scanlan both fell. With the help of Kerrek, Raishan was defeated. Percy was revived, but the attempt on Scanlan failed, and he was rushed to Whitestone for a resurrection ritual.

Arc 4: Taryon Darrington
Waking up to find that Vox Machina had told his daughter of his death, Scanlan lashed out and left Vox Machina with Kaylie. The party, shocked by his departure, made a quick stop in Ank'Harel for a delivery and were accosted by Taryon Darrington, who bought their services as adventuring companions. Now free to pursue personal goals, Vox Machina headed to Vesrah to complete the last trial on Keyleth's Aramenté. Tasked with retrieving lodestones from a Kraken's lair, they succeeded, but Vax'ildan was killed. Pike's astral projection appeared and brought him back to life, and the party returned to Greyskull Keep to rest. In Keyleth's hometown of Zephrah, she received the title of Voice of the Tempest. Vox Machina then entered the City of Dis in the Nine Hells to destroy Hotis once and for all. After Percy made a deal with the fiend Ipkesh, they were granted passage in Mentiri, where they met the were-bear Tova, who helped them complete their contract and destroy Hotis. Back in Whitestone, Vex'ahlia completed the Grey Hunt and earned her title of Baroness of Whitestone.
Having completed all of their goals, Vox Machina spent the rest of the year taking some time off. Vax and Keyleth stayed in Zephrah, Pike and Grog spent some time in Vasselheim, and Vex, Percy and Taryon settled in Whitestone. Vex, Pike, Tary and Keyleth opened a bakery in Whitestone called the Slayer's Cake. The party reunited for a well deserved vaction in Shammel during Winter's Crest. Upon their return to Whitestone, they were visited by a portion of the Trickfoot family, who tried to scam Pike out of her money. While attempting to dive off a cliff to recover a lost diamond, Keyleth lost her life, but was revived by Vex'ahlia using a Coin of Revivify created by Taryon. The very next day, Taryon was kidnapped by the bounty hunter K'ryyn who took him back to Wildemount at his father's request. Vox Machina caught up to them and freed Tary, then elected to go to Deastok to confront Howaardt Darrington. He revealed that their family is in financial trouble due to the local crime gang, the Myriad. The group contacted the Myriad and agreed to do a job for them to erase the Darrington's debt, heading inside a mine to destroy a gestating guardian called Symphior. When they returned, Tary announced that he'll soon return to take over as the head of the family. Back in Whitestone, Vox Machina was approached by Lionel Gayheart who told them that his boss, Aes Adan, has news for them. Suspicious, the party met with Aes, and uncovered his real identity: Scanlan. He and Kaylie had been living in Ank'Harel, where took on the persona of Aes Adan, a local crime boss. He came to tell them that a new ziggurat, identical to the one under Whitestone, had been discovered by Lionel.

Arc 5: Vecna
Vox Machina headed to the new ziggurat to investigate, and found a group of cultists surrounding another black orb, including a revived Delilah Briarwood. Vox Machina discovered that the cultists were planning on completing the Ritual of Seeding which would return the lich Vecna to physical form. Taryon returned home, hiring Lionel as the first member of his brigade, and the rest of the group traveled to Thar Amphala, a city in the Shadowfell where the ritual was to take place. They destroyed the tower of Entropis, but failed to stop the ritual. While battling Vecna, Vex'ahlia was killed and Vax completely disintegrated. After reviving Vex, the party escaped via Plane Shift to the Feywild. Vax'ildan was granted a temporary body by by the Raven Queen under the condition that he help destroy Vecna, then come back to her.
Seeking guidance from the gods against this powerful enemy, Vox Machina was granted access to Elysium, where the goddess Sarenrae told them about the Rites of Prime Banishment, which would allow them to banish Vecna for good. She gave Pike, her champion, the Blessing of the Everlight and sent them to meet Pelor. He offered to make one of them his Champion, and Vex'ahlia took on the task, earning the Blessing of the Dawnfather. Travelling to The Pools of Wittebak, they encountered Sprigg. After defending his home from an ambush by Vecna, they were guided by him to the Endless Athenaeum. There, they met the goddess Ioun, who challenged Scanlan to locate the Tome of Isolation to earn his title of Champion of Ioun. Scanlan succeeded and earned Ioun's Blessing, while Grog received the knowledge to forge the Prime Trammels and Percy, the knowledge to design them. She warned the party that Vecna had managed to ascend to godhood and had to be stopped very quickly. Vox Machina traveled to Scaldseat, where they discovered the Core Anvil of the All-Hammer. Grog and Percy succeeded in forging the prime trammels, and Vox Machina traveled to Vasselheim, where Vecna was headed.
Vox Machina met with the War Council of Vasselheim. The city of Thar Amphala had been brought to the Material Plane and now sat on top of a massive Earth titan, which was walking towards the city. Vox Machina flew towards it on the back of De'vossa in an attempt to intercept it in time. Entering at the base of the Titan, they climbed up through the ancient dwarven city of Thomara, retrieving the Sword of Kas from the depths of the Titan on the way. However, their presence was revealed, and they were ambushed by Delilah and Sylas Briarwood. Overpowered, Vox Machina fled once more to the Feywild, where they contacted Artagan and asked that he manipulate the flow of time to allow them to rest, then return to the Material Plane as if no time had gone by. Artagan accepted in exchange for permission to strangle Vax'ildan to death. Vax, knowing his body would return the next day, accepted. Their strength regained, Vox Machina Plane Shifted into Thar Amphala and headed straight to Vecna, joined by Arkhan along the way. They managed to complete the Rites of Prime Banishment, effectively destroying Vecna's forces and sending the titan back into slumber. However, Arkhan grabbed the Hand of Vecna before teleporting away.
After victory was announced in Vasselheim, the Raven Queen arrived to claim Vax'ildan, who said his last goodbyes to the group. Vox Machina then returned to Whitestone to celebrate their victory and honor the memory of Vax'ildan.

Keys: grog, looks
Appearance
Grog, being a goliath, has grey skin resembling that of a stone giant, with black tattoos adorning his upper body and the top of his bald head. With a massive, muscular build, he weighs over 645 pounds[40] and stands 8 feet 7 inches tall.[41] After a phylactery was removed from his body, a scar formed on his chest, marking the lingering darkness within him.[42] Grog bears the brand of the Slayer's Take guild on his right arm, which he received upon joining. Whenever he enters his rage, his eyes appear to glow red, as seen in the Vox Machina Campaign Intro. The Belt of Dwarvenkind allowed Grog to grow a thick black beard, a feat thought impossible for him, as male goliaths have no body hair.[43] While it was growing, it appeared translucent. During Vox Machina’s one-year break, Grog took the skin with the bear tattoo, which he had flayed from Kevdak’s chest, and had it tanned. He then had an exact copy of the tattoo inked on his back as a symbol that Kevdak and the events surrounding him are now behind him.[44]
Typically shirtless, Grog wears fur-trimmed pants and secures the large Belt of Dwarvenkind, adorned with a golden face emblem, around his waist. A leather strap stretches across his chest, supporting a fur pelt draped over his shoulder, which is decorated with a large skull. After growing his beard, he added a metal band around his neck, featuring fang-like objects at each end. On his arms, he now wields the Titanstone Knuckles, massive stone-textured gauntlets forged from the heart of an earth titan.
For a brief time, while attuned to the Sword of Kas, Grog’s stone-grey skin turned pale white, his body became gaunt, and his jowls slightly sunk. His eyes turned blood-red around the irises.[45] However, after completing the mission to seal Vecna and breaking free from the sword's influence, Grog returned to his usual appearance.
When Bells Hells encountered him in Vasselheim about thirty years after the adventures of Vox Machina, Grog was still incredibly muscular and bearded, but the black beard was streaked with gray and he had a little bit of a gut slightly overlapping the Belt of Dwarvenkind.[46]

Keys: grog, personality
Jokes have been made occasionally about Grog being smarter than most barbarians when the group plays, as Travis does mathematical calculations faster than the other players. Travis has jokingly called his character "Professor Grog".[47]
Grog's low intelligence score has proven problematic for the group in the past. He has been completely incapacitated by creatures that made psychic or intelligence attacks, particularly when an intellect devourer's attack put Grog into a catatonic state.[48]
Because of his low intelligence, Grog is illiterate and cannot read or write in any language. After being unable to read any of the runes written in Giant within the City of Brass, Grog expressed a desire to learn how to read, and asked for Pike to help him learn the Common alphabet.[49] Since then, Pike has managed to teach Grog how to read words in Common that are up to five letters long.[50]
Grog has shown himself to be rather impulsive, as seen often when he charges ahead of the group into an unknown area of a dungeon or map. He was also the only chaotic-neutral group member at the start of the campaign, and he is often more aggressive and less merciful than some of the other characters. He does not like being bested in single combat, as seen in "Hubris" (1x17). He is willing to cheat to win, as seen when he drank a potion of Stone Giant Strength to defeat the half-orc Kern in "The Rematch" (1x23). Despite this, Grog has a sweet, happy side that often comes out when he is around his friends.
Grog is physically the strongest member of Vox Machina and often attempts to take the majority of damage, acting as the party tank, due to his high armor class and constitution.
- #8keyleth1
Keys: keyleth, looks
During Campaign One, Keyleth is a twenty-three-year-old young half-elven woman standing about 6' tall,[34] with fair skin, green eyes[35] and long red hair, which was later cut short.[36] She is depicted with freckles on her nose and cheeks in some official material. She's almost never seen without her signature "antlers", a druidic circlet. She would later wear the Mantle of the Tempest, a long cloak made of dark green leathers that unfurl into autumn-colored leaves.
After joining the Slayer's Take, Keyleth has the brand of the guild on her right arm.[37] In the year that passed between Vex'ahlia's first successful Grey Hunt and the party's vacation to Marquet, Keyleth received tattoos along her chest, shoulders, and back to symbolize the Mantle of the Tempest when she's not wearing it, as a reminder of her position as the Voice of the Tempest.[38]
In 836 PD (at the time of her appearance in Campaign Two), Keyleth's description seemed to match her previous appearance. Because of the druid ability Timeless Body, even though Keyleth is 47 years old at the time, she should appear to be around 25 years old.[39]
In 843 PD, as a member of the Exandrian Accord ready for war, she used red armor-like elements, sharper antlers that extend to her cheekbones, and a shorter mantle of leaves, some of them being grey to evoke the idea of autumn giving way to winter.[40]
- #9keyleth2
Keys: keyleth, personality
Keyleth is shy and very socially inept. This makes it difficult for her to persuade others to help her and her friends out in many situations. However, she also has a strong moral compass,[45] which leads her to question at times some of the rather extreme choices that Vox Machina tends to make. Although she has slowly been overcoming her own social flaws, at times her anger gets the better of her.[46] She has been gaining more confidence in herself, and becoming more pragmatic, without compromising her morals. At times, Keyleth is prone to acting impulsively, which has led to unfavorable outcomes. However, she's also very tenacious and stubborn, refusing to give up even in the bleakest of circumstances and always wanting to go the extra mile to help others. Another thing that defines Keyleth is her tendency to feel guilty. She tends to focus more on her mistakes than her successes.
Whereas many of her people, the Ashari, are worshipers of the nature goddess Melora, following her as a deity and example, Keyleth herself is much less devout.[47] In fact, she has a very strong distrust towards any religious establishment. This is due to several unpleasant experiences in the past where she had witnessed corruption within those of the faith.[48] It is after the attack of the Chroma Conclave, or the Chroma Crisis, begins that she starts to overcome her distrust of the gods, most notably taking an interest in Melora herself.
Despite her peoples' exceedingly high expectations of her, deep down Keyleth never wanted the responsibility she was given. But she felt as if she couldn't escape from it, that she had no control over her future since birth. She yearned to return to the normal life she once had, to be blissful and ignorant again.[49] However, over time, she has learned to accept her responsibilities. After many struggles, she took up the mantle of the Voice of the Tempest and became a leader for her people.[50]
Keyleth also believed for the longest time that she did not deserve happiness. She has a strong fear of death and of losing those close to her. She worries that even if she lives to fulfill her Aramenté, she will still watch those close to her die. This has caused her great pain and for some time made her unable to allow herself to love others, such as Vax'ildan, who would become her first boyfriend.[51] She eventually fought that same fear and confessed her feelings to him.[52] It was also Vax who taught her how to love and take chances.
Keyleth feels attraction towards confident and self-assured people because those are qualities that don't come easy to her.[53] She is still questioning her own sexuality as she not only returned Vax's affections when she confessed her love for him, but she's also had a fascination with his twin sister. As she mentions to Percy during Grog's rematch with Earthbreaker Groon, when Vex thinks of flashing Grog to "inspire" him and Keyleth responds in the affirmative, drawing an odd look from Percy, she says, "I have a thing for twins."[54] But she herself is new at relationships in general and trying to figure things out about herself.[55]
Keyleth is one of the party's main spellcasters. She often uses her Wild Shape abilities to turn into various creatures for battle, scouting, transportation, stealth, and many other purposes. She can control the elements, and at times she uses these abilities to slow down enemies or buy time but is also capable of using said powers to defend herself and others. Keyleth also possesses some knowledge of healing, as she can heal the wounds of her friends and she once managed to bring Grog out of a catatonic state.[56]
Keyleth's alignment is "neutral good",[11] like Percy and, originally, Vex'ahlia.
- #10percy1
Keys: percy, looks
Percy in the first campaign is a young human in his early twenties.[35] He originally had brown hair, but it turned white as a result of the trauma he suffered after the Briarwoods killed his family.[36] He wears distinctive, double-lensed glasses. Percy is either nearsighted[37] or far-sighted.[38] On the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina, Percy was exactly six feet tall.[39]
After joining the Slayer's Take, Percy has the brand of the guild on his right arm.
- #11percy2
Keys: percy, personality
Compared to his fellow party members, Percy is rather quiet, usually only speaking when necessary. However, he has shown he can be quite persuasive in social situations and is somewhat of a tactician within the group, as seen in "The Temple Showdown" (1x11).[41] Despite his prim and conscientious exterior, however, Percy has shown himself on multiple occasions to hold the signature eccentricity of a tinkerer, as displayed in escapades such as the cannonball contest.
Having experienced both the pinnacle of entitlement and the depths of poverty, Percy displays a wisdom and self-awareness beyond his years, especially in regard to social status. He indicates a particular fondness for unceremoniously dethroning other, snobbier nobility with a combination of his own title and a biting wit. Percy thinks of himself as being the only one capable of making adult decisions, despite his young age. He is also very pragmatic, with a consistent belief that the ends justify the means. This has led to moments of conflict between him and the party.[42]
Percy's desire for revenge was consciously monstrous. He was fully aware of the consequences of building the first firearm: he knew that the technology would escape his grasp and kill thousands of people in his lifetime, but he was willing to accept that to help him get revenge on several specific people.[43] Thankfully, he grew beyond this mindset, even to the point of forgiving the individual who hurt him the most deeply. Despite this, decades later he sometimes feels regret and punishes himself for his past mistakes.[44]
Percy's attitude was molded by the severe physical and emotional trauma he endured at the hands of the Briarwoods and Dr. Ripley, displaying a cynical, detached, and self-deprecating behavior. He responds poorly to compliments on his character, and his lack of self-respect is shown most clearly in the preferences he mentions for how his corpse should be handled in the letter that he composed for Vox Machina in the event of his demise.[45] The experience of being possessed by Orthax made Percy averse to doing magic and suspicious of anything else that functioned in a way he didn't understand.[46]
- #12pike1
Keys: pike, looks
Pike, being a deep gnome, is small in stature but average for a gnome. Her skintone has been described as light, but she appeared in various official media with a tan skintone. Pike's hair was originally black with a purple streak. After her first death and resurrection, her hair turned white.[30] She keeps it wrapped up in braids and occasionally buns.[31] She also has a scar that runs down her left eye[32] and (presumably) a scar across her lower torso from being bisected by a glabrezu.[33]
Pike wears plate armor in the blue and silver colors of her goddess, and a symbol of the Everlight around her neck that she uses as a spellcasting focus.
- #13pike2
Keys: pike, personality
Pike, being a cleric, is very faithful to her goddess, the Everlight.
Ever since was brought back to life, she has been dealing with feelings of frustration, guilt, and anger. Despite being kind and welcoming, she has shown a more violent side, as shown when she killed an unconscious duergar in the Emberhold fortress.[34] She enjoys fighting and feeling powerful, leaning into her nickname of "Monstah".
Nevertheless, Pike is very compassionate and cares very deeply for all of her party members, often going out of her way to ensure nobody falls unconscious or dies in battle. She often feels like she has to put on a brave face for everyone just so they don't worry about her.[35] Pike spent a lot of time away from the party to focus on helping people, be it by rebuilding a temple, taking care of refugees, or helping ward a city against enemies. She also performed several Resurrection rituals, and has brought back almost every member of Vox Machina to life at least once, with the exception of Keyleth.
Pike's alignment is either chaotic good, like Vax'ildan and Vex'ahlia, or chaotic neutral, like Grog.
- #14scanlan1
Keys: scanlan, looks
As a gnome, Scanlan is shorter than the other members of Vox Machina. He is also much older, but because gnomes live so much longer than many humanoid races, he appears to be around the same age as his former companions.
Scanlan has brown hair and usually wears a beret. In official art, he is depicted wearing purple clothing with an open shirt that reveals his chest hair. His skin tone varies from slightly tanned to brown in various depictions of the character.
After joining the Slayer's Take, Scanlan has the brand of the guild on his right arm. Later, during his first time in Whitestone, he bought a beret, completing the iconic look.[32] When Scanlan returned to Whitestone after a year on the road with his daughter Kaylie, he bore a new scar under his eye where Kaylie's knife cut him.
- #15scanlan2
Keys: scanlan, personality
Scanlan's quick wit and silver tongue made him Vox Machina's best negotiator and deceiver. Scanlan often acted as support for his allies by enhancing their abilities or weakening their opponents. He was also capable of holding his own with a combination of magic, improvisation, and courage, as exemplified by his solo fight against Duke Vedmire and his eight armed guards.[36]
Scanlan was often regarded as the comic relief character and almost never brought up his own troubles and anxieties, instead focusing on making jokes or witty comments. His refusal to ask for help and constantly lying about his mental health slowly built up, until he began to feel like he didn't belong with Vox Machina, accusing them of never having cared about him or bothered to find out who he was and what he wanted.[37] Because of this, he left the party for over a year.
“ A human man? That was teenage years, baby. I've gone much further than that since then. ” – Scanlan Shorthalt, "The Ominous March" (1x109) [edit] Scanlan is an extensive womanizer but has been known to flirt with men as well, particularly Grog and Vax. [38] He has said that Vax kissing him was not the first time an elf-man kissed him (but it was in the top three).[39] When Vax and Grog pranked him with a potion of love, causing him to become infatuated with Percy, it was confirmed that Scanlan is bi- or pansexual. Scanlan tends to flirt with most women he interacts with, but most notably with Pike. For years, he made advances to her that she politely ignored. However, as time went by, and especially after spending a year with his daughter,[citation needed] Scanlan realized that his behavior had been disrespectful, and he wished to be more respectful towards women in the future.[40] “ Come on, come on, get your Scanlan on. It's Thursday night, and it won't be long. Gonna play my flute, gonna play my shawm. It's Thursday night, and it won't be long
'Til I get your health up, Get your health up! I got all you need. No, I don't shoot bows, I don't swing swords, But damn, I can sing! ” Scanlan's Healing Word for Percy[41] (based on "Cheap Thrills" by Sia)
Scanlan (or rather Sam) created parodies of real-world songs, silly limericks, and comical remarks as part of his Bardic Inspiration, Healing Word, or Cutting Words spells. Some were improvised on the spot, while others were prepared in advance. CritRoleStats has compiled a list of Scanlan's songs used on stream.
Scanlan's alignment is "neutral good",[42] like Keyleth (and, originally, Vex'ahlia). He tended to sit back and watch while his allies strategize and scheme, occasionally making a joke or two. However, when the situation became urgent (or ripe for comedy), Scanlan would eagerly jump into the fray.

Keys: vax, looks
Like his twin sister Vex'ahlia, Vax is a twenty-eight-year-old half-elf.[13] He greatly resembles his sister, with long, dark brown hair[42] and hazel eyes,[43] but at 5'11"[44] he is two inches taller than her.[45] During his resurrection ritual in Vesrah, a part of his hair was braided with Vex's blue feathers as part of her offering.[46] Vax'ildan wears the Deathwalker's Ward, a black set of studded leather armor trimmed with black feathers. When he activates the armor's ability to fly, a pair of large black raven wings sprout from his back.
After joining the Slayer's Take, Vax'ildan has the brand of the guild on his right arm. He got a pair of tattoos in Vasselheim after completing the Slayer's Take trial: on the inside of his left wrist are the sounds for "V" and "M" written in Elvish script, and on the inside of his right wrist is an icosahedron.[47] While spending a year with Keyleth in Zephrah, he also got a tattoo of her antlers on his upper right arm. Additionally, Vax'ildan used to have the Clasp's brand between his shoulder blades,[7] but it has since been covered by a handprint-shaped scar on his back after he asked Keyleth to burn it away.[48]
After his resurrection, Vax'ildan developed a dark, bruise-like mark over his heart as a symbol of the boon he received from the Raven Queen.[49][50] After being disintegrated by Vecna, the Raven Queen made a deal with Vax to allow him to return to life until Vecna had been destroyed. Once Vax reappeared on the Material Plane, the dark mark on his chest had expanded to resemble a pair of wings.[51]
When Vax'ildan briefly returned to the material plane in order to commemorate his sister's wedding, he wore an elegant mask resembling Percy's, and his right shoulder had a bony, antler-like growth coming from the area of his tattoo of Keyleth's antlers.
- #17vax2
Keys: vax, personality
Compared to his sister, Vax is far more focused and serious, but he is not without his moments of playfulness, as he is quite fond of being a prankster. He can be incredibly deceptive and often navigates through social situations with ease and occasionally coin.
Vax tends to wear his heart on his sleeve. He has a habit of self-loathing and tends to brood when undergoing emotional crises. When he feels overwhelmed, he prefers to walk away when it becomes too much to bear instead of dealing with the problem.[53] At times, he keeps his emotions to himself, the only person he ever trusted for a long time being his sister. But he does open up towards those who earn his trust and his love.
Vax'ildan has said that he felt depressed for a long time before meeting with Vox Machina. For many years, he thought of himself as "lost and a wanderer", his goal being to find some purpose in his life. He had considered becoming a follower of Sarenrae, inspired by his friend Pike,[54] but had to give up on this idea after he offered his life to the Raven Queen, in desperation, to save his sister's life. Upon encountering the Raven Queen,[55] Vax'ildan was fearful at first, but he eventually accepted his new role as the goddess's champion.[56] By accepting that role and coming to an understanding, Vax found what he had been lacking and became more at ease.
Vax'ildan is bisexual.[57] He shows interest in both men and women, specifically Shaun Gilmore, a human sorcerer, and Keyleth, a half-elven druid and fellow member of Vox Machina.
Vax is a close-ranged combat fighter and often uses a deadly combination of sneak attacks, magical weaponry, items, agility, and various abilities when in combat. He is naturally the sneakiest member of Vox Machina and often scouts ahead for the group when in dangerous situations.
Vax's alignment is "chaotic good", like Pike and (currently) Vex.
- #18vex1
Keys: vex, looks
Vex'ahlia, like her twin brother Vax'ildan, is a twenty-eight-year-old[21] half-elf with hazel eyes.[51] She is identical in appearance to Vax, albeit two inches shorter than him[52] which would make her about 5'9".[53] She wears her long, dark brown hair[54] in a thick braid, which is usually accompanied with blue feathers. The feathers were a gift from Vax so he could help her through a dark period of her life and she eventually gave them back by braiding them into his hair during his resurrection ritual.[55]
After joining the Slayer's Take, Vex has the brand of the guild on her right arm.
As of 843 PD Vex'ahlia still looks as charming and athletic as in her youth, and despite the years, her half-elven lineage makes her look in her thirties,[56] although she does have some gray hairs.[57] She had a black feather behind her ear instead of a blue one, probably a reference to her twin brother.[58]
- #19vex2
Keys: vex, personality
Compared to Vax, Vex is the more pragmatic of the twins. She is very deceptive and can usually bluff her way through various social encounters. Her charisma has also made her good at haggling.
Her tendency to haggle stems from her frugality. Her frugal nature is the result of Vax and herself having to fend for themselves during their teenage years. Unofficially, she is the treasurer for Vox Machina, and often only gives cryptic answers when questioned by the group about how much gold they have.
But beneath her flirtatious attitude, self-confidence, and outgoing exterior lay a girl who feels broken and unwanted. This may be a symptom of her upbringing in Syngorn, where she and Vax had been judged not only due to their status as half-elves, but also because they were bastard children of their ambassador father. Compared to her brother, Vex was much more affected by the elves' treatment of her. As such, she developed a mentality where she would constantly try to make herself look like she came from money so that people would respect her. She will take to heart any insults people with wealth and status make towards her and has a tendency to dislike someone if they seem like they are judging her.[59] Such behavior has led to people assuming she was obsessed with wealth. Only a handful of people, like Percy, have ever truly known the kind of person she was.[60]
One of Vex's personal challenges was to focus less on resentment and vengeance, and more on forgiveness and growth,[61] but she often found it difficult to remember in the moment, which is why she wrote "sinaeth," the Elvish word for "forgive," on her bow, where she would see it every time she took a shot.[62][63]
Vex'ahlia's alignment was originally neutral good,[10] just like Keyleth and Scanlan, but became chaotic neutral, like Grog and Tiberius, due to many behaviors and actions culminating in the theft of Gern Blanston's flying broom and then lying about it.[64] After a long while, due to having reflected on her choices and making an effort to change herself, her alignment changed once more—this time to chaotic good—after showing genuine concern for two enslaved aasimar and wanting to save them.
