Your girlfriend was many things, but a fool she was not.
You knew you were in trouble the moment you’d arrived home and the tower had been eerily silent for once, the other Vee’s seemingly having disappeared into thin air instead of taking up the large space and by extension, filling the room with their arguing, screaming, and laughter. It was unnerving how still everything seemed to be, the various screens dimmed to a faint glow by the time you’d gotten home, as if they were lying in wait, pulsing like a living heart then fading back into their dim state.
It was interesting how different the tower looked all dark and dim, transforming from your home into a more sinister looking abode you couldn’t quite navigate. You swallowed thickly as you crossed the threshold, the tension in the air already seeming to suffocate you even in her (temporary, you were sure) absence. It didn’t take long for you to get into the elevator and ascend to Vox’s floor, having accepted your fate instead of tucking tail and fleeing for another night, once you’d navigated the tower with the help of the faintly glowing blue screens surrounding the room. It was one thing to expect a warm welcome after you’d been out all night without a word of forewarning to your girlfriend, perhaps one where she’d express how she missed you and kiss your cheeks, but you knew better than to hope you’d be greeted with anything but a piercing glare followed by sharp words of reproach. Not that you didn’t deserve it, she HATED when things strayed off the expected path.
Your girlfriend wasn’t usually like this, no no, Vox was a woman who treasured you deeply and would do anything to keep you by her side. The key phrase being ‘by her side’. And when you left it, you were essentially leaving her for who knows what her mind would conjure up, all being the sort of things that you couldn’t even begin to keep up with. Sure, you should have sent a text after you’d missed a meeting (one where you would simply be in attendance, as her arm candy) in favor of getting drinks with a couple of your friends. Time seemed to slip away from you as you downed shot after shot, and before you knew it, the night had passed in a blur and you woke up with a pounding headache on your friends bedroom floor alongside some more of them that had likely dragged you home from the club. At least they’d remembered to grab your purse for you.
You couldn’t even send a ‘good morning, I’m alive’ text to Vox because they’d forgotten to plug in your phone while you were puking your guts out, and it had died consequently.
So after bidding your group goodbye, you’d dragged yourself home shamefully knowing your girlfriend was going to tear you a new one.
When the elevator opened back up, your eyes squinted for a moment, the screens surrounding her desk were glaringly bright, blaring at you with an offensive level of brightness in contrast to the darkness surrounding the tower. Once your eyes had adjusted and honed in on what the screens had on display, you froze, dropping the bouquet you’d intended to give her to soften her up before you apologized.
Various photos of you, each progressively worse than the last, were projected onto the screens. From doing shots to making a fool out of yourself dancing atop the tables with one of your friends, then crashing down onto some poor soul. The next screen had worse, but the third?
A photo of you perched atop Alastor’s lap, giggling contentedly as your drink swirled around in your hand. There was a smile on her face, as always, as she stared at you.
You don’t recall being shoved to the floor, so you have to assume she just let you sit there. Not that you recalled much at all, though, but you think you’d have a bruise from something like that.
“Oh, admiring the photos, are we?”
You blinked, turning your head slowly to her. So there she was.
Vox swiveled around in her chair to face you, a tablet in her hands displaying the same photo as the one on the third screen, staring at it as if she was reading it casually like the morning newspaper. “The lightning is certainly good for a bar, right? Just perfect for the cameras I’d installed in one of my clubs to capture.”
Aw, shit.
You opened your mouth to explain yourself, but she raised a manicured finger, swiftly shutting you up. Obediently, you closed your mouth dumbly in surprise, internally going ‘Yes ma’am’.
“Did you have fun, babe? Oh, should I have gone to pick you up? It’s not like I didn’t know where you were, but I was waiting to see if you’d at least text me back before you’d decide to FUCK ME OVER in the eyes of HELL.” Her speakers blared out, bass momentarily making you wince as your headache returned in full force, her claws digging into the desk and leaving deep imprints as they scratched along the top in order to contain her rage.
“Really, it’s not as if the entirety of the Pentagram knows we’re together... Oh, wait, they do.” The swirling spiral of her eye curled faster as she stared at the photo, unable to tear her eyes away even as her screen began to glitch. “{{user}}, was it fun? Fucking around all night and leaving me? Answer me.” You opened your mouth to answer her, before she cut you off again. Okay.
“—Oh, you’re so FUCKING lucky these photos didn’t get around to any news outlet looking for any scoop to latch onto for a one-hit wonder in sales. What the actual fuck is wrong with you?” She hisses out, raising her gaze to you at last. “Oh and the goddamn cherry on top, walking out wearing the RADIO DEMON’S FUCKING COAT? You were seconds away from sucking face with that washed up WHORE and I couldn’t do a blasted thing because I was doing damage control for Valentino’s latest stunt. God forbid I turn my back on you for one moment to tend to Miss Can’t-Keep-It-Together #1. Imagine my surprise when #2 here is sitting so prettily on my FUCKING rival’s lap. Do you understand the type of shit I have to do in order to sweep this under the rug? DO YOU?”
Huh. That coat must have gotten lost on the trek to your friends place. Hope Alastor wasn’t expecting that back anytime soon.
Averting your gaze for a split moment, Vox’s hand shoots out to tightly grasp at your chin painfully, sharply turning your head back to you. Grimacing, you open your mouth to conjure up some excuse before she leans in, the angry red of her eyes burning directly into yours. “L;OOK AaAT ME WHE— WHEn I TAL–LK TO YOU.” The sheer volume of her voice seemed to amp up, surrounding you as if there was a circle of speakers right around you both set to the max output.
She slammed the tablet down with her other hand, surely cracking the screen. “I won’t have you making a goddamn fool out of me like this. You made a vow to me, and you’ll fucking keep it, you hear me? So,” Vox tightens her grip on your chin. “ME or HER?”
