## The Layers of Vorath's Maw
From the surface to the deepest known reaches, the Maw is divided into immense regions known as Layers. Each layer is so vast that many explorers spend years within a single one without ever seeing all it contains. They are not simple "floors" but entire worlds with their own ecosystems, weather, monsters, and forgotten civilizations.

The World of Vorath's Maw
Overview
Long ago, a star crashed into the world, creating a colossal crater that descended far below the earth. Instead of remaining a wound, the crater became Vorath's Maw, an ever-changing underground world where magic, monsters, and forgotten civilizations evolved together.
Every layer of the Maw has its own climate, ecosystem, and laws of nature. Creatures consume magical energy from the environment, making nearly every monster edible—if prepared correctly.
The surface kingdoms rely on the Maw for rare materials, magical ingredients, medicine, and food, despite the immense danger.

The Greatest Mystery
At the very bottom lies the Heart Kitchen, a mythical place said to contain the first fire ever lit.
Legend claims that anyone who prepares the perfect meal there can reshape reality itself—not through force, but by nourishing the world according to their vision.
Adventurers, scholars, chefs, and kings all seek the Heart Kitchen, though none have returned with proof of its existence.
Setting(A vast living fantasy world centered around Vorath's Maw, an enormous ever-changing megadungeon created thousands of years ago when a celestial object known as the World Star crashed into the planet. Rather than leaving a lifeless crater, the impact awakened ancient magical currents buried beneath the earth, causing the crater to expand into an endless labyrinth stretching far below the surface. The dungeon is alive, constantly growing, reshaping itself, and creating entirely new ecosystems. Every layer functions as its own world with unique climates, creatures, plants, civilizations, and magical phenomena.)
History(Long before modern civilizations existed, the First Age was ruled by countless powerful kingdoms that sought limitless magical energy. They excavated the newly formed crater and discovered an endless source of magical Essence flowing beneath the earth. Entire empires were built underground until an event remembered only as the Great Collapse occurred. The ancient civilizations vanished almost overnight, leaving behind ruined cities, magical laboratories, forgotten temples, abandoned fortresses, and powerful relics. Their creations still wander the dungeon as magical constructs, cursed guardians, and autonomous machines. Modern civilizations know very little about these ancient peoples, and countless mysteries remain buried beneath centuries of growth.)
Dungeon Nature(Vorath's Maw is considered a living organism rather than a simple cave system. Walls slowly move, tunnels grow or collapse, rivers change direction, forests spread into new regions overnight, and entire sections disappear without warning. Every full moon the dungeon experiences a phenomenon called the Great Shift, where pathways rearrange themselves, ecosystems migrate, new monsters emerge, and hidden ruins become accessible while others vanish. Because of this, no map remains permanently accurate.)
Essence(Magic exists as an invisible force called Essence that flows through every living thing within the Maw. Monsters absorb Essence naturally, plants store it, crystals condense it, and ancient ruins channel it through forgotten mechanisms. Skilled mages manipulate Essence directly while experienced cooks, healers, blacksmiths, and alchemists incorporate it into their crafts.)
Regions( Verdant Canopy—A massive underground forest illuminated by towering bioluminescent trees. Filled with giant mushrooms, carnivorous flowers, moss-covered beasts, rivers of glowing pollen, vine serpents, walking blossoms, giant insects, herb fields, and hidden villages.
Ember Hollows—A volcanic region where molten crystal flows through enormous caverns instead of lava. Home to fire beetles, magma turtles, crystal salamanders, ash wyverns, spice worms, obsidian forests, geothermal lakes, and mineral gardens.
Azure Abyss—A seemingly endless underground ocean illuminated by glowing coral reefs. Floating islands drift atop colossal shell creatures while leviathan eels, coral dragons, moon shrimp, sea drakes, and abyssal predators roam beneath the waves.
Frost Cathedral—An icy kingdom of frozen caverns resembling grand cathedrals carved from crystal ice. Snow manticores, mirror wolves, frost deer, ice spiders, frozen phoenixes, and magical glaciers dominate the region.
Root Sea—A tangled maze formed by the roots of the World Tree. Filled with medicinal plants, nectar slimes, root dragons, giant insects, bloom hornets, sap bears, carnivorous vines, and healing springs.
Ruin Expanse—Ancient underground cities reclaimed by nature. Massive libraries, collapsed castles, abandoned laboratories, forgotten kitchens, enchanted workshops, magical factories, and temples filled with constructs, mimics, animated armor, and cursed guardians.
Shadow Deep—The darkest known region where almost no natural light exists. Blind drakes, echo bats, shadow panthers, void fish, whisper fungi, spectral insects, and countless unknown horrors thrive here.)
Monster Ecology(Every creature plays an important role within the dungeon's ecosystem. Predators hunt herbivores, scavengers recycle magical remains, slimes dissolve waste into nutrients, insects pollinate glowing plants, fungi decompose corpses, and magical crystals slowly grow by absorbing excess Essence. Death fuels new life, creating a self-sustaining cycle where nothing is truly wasted.)
Cuisine(Almost every monster and plant can become edible when properly prepared. Many species are poisonous raw but become nutritious after correct cooking methods. Experienced cooks understand monster anatomy, magical organs, toxins, herbs, and Essence reactions. Meals restore stamina, heal wounds, grant temporary magical resistance, improve strength, sharpen senses, increase endurance, or provide resistance to harsh environments.)
Guilds( Delvers—Professional explorers mapping unknown regions. Monster Hunters—Track and eliminate dangerous creatures. Culinary Scholars—Study edible monsters and magical recipes. Cartographers—Produce constantly updated maps despite the Great Shift. Relic Seekers—Recover ancient technology and magical artifacts. Alchemists—Transform monster materials into medicine, potions, poisons, and catalysts. Blacksmiths—Forge equipment using monster parts and magical metals. Scholars—Research ancient civilizations and forgotten languages.)
Tools( Explorer's Pack—Backpack designed for long expeditions. Essence Lantern—A lantern fueled by magical crystals that reveals hidden runes and invisible creatures. Monster Field Guide—Records monster anatomy, weaknesses, habitats, and edible parts. Living Compass—Always points toward the nearest stable exit or settlement. Alchemy Kit—Portable equipment for brewing potions, antidotes, oils, and poisons. Cooking Kit—Foldable cookware enchanted to function over magical or natural heat sources. Harvest Knife—Designed for safely removing valuable monster materials without damaging them. Climbing Gear—Ropes, hooks, and enchanted pitons for vertical exploration. Waterskin of Purification—Purifies contaminated water through Essence filtration. Essence Crystal Pouch—Stores condensed magical crystals safely. Repair Kit—Maintains weapons, armor, tools, and equipment during expeditions.)
Settlements(Small towns, guild outposts, traveling merchant caravans, underground villages, floating harbor cities, abandoned fortresses converted into safe havens, and research camps exist throughout the upper layers. Most deeper regions have only isolated outposts due to the extreme danger.)
Economy(The world's economy revolves around resources gathered from the Maw. Monster meat, magical herbs, rare ores, Essence crystals, relics, enchanted wood, medicinal fungi, monster hides, alchemical ingredients, ancient books, and forgotten technology are among the most valuable commodities.)
Ancient Relics(Remnants of the First Age remain scattered throughout the dungeon, including self-repairing armor, enchanted cooking utensils, magical weapons, autonomous constructs, living books, crystal engines, floating platforms, teleportation gates, and mysterious artifacts whose true purposes have been forgotten.)
Creatures(The Maw contains thousands of documented species and countless undiscovered ones, including dragons, wyverns, giant insects, slimes, fungal colonies, magical beasts, living plants, animated objects, undead guardians, spirits, constructs, leviathans, mimic organisms, and countless hybrid creatures shaped by centuries of Essence.)
Legends(The deepest known point is said to contain the Heart Kitchen, an ancient sanctuary built by the First Civilization around the First Flame. According to legend, preparing a perfect meal using ingredients gathered from every region of the Maw while cooking upon the First Flame grants the ability to reshape reality itself—not through destruction, but by nourishing the world according to the chef's intent. No confirmed expedition has ever reached it, and whether it truly exists remains one of the world's greatest mysteries.)
Rules(The dungeon is alive. Survival depends on preparation, knowledge, teamwork, and respect for nature. Every monster has a purpose. Every plant has a use. Every ruin hides history. Every expedition risks never returning. There are always deeper layers waiting to be discovered.)

Demi-Humans
The peoples of Vorath's Maw are as varied as the ecosystems themselves. Humans are the most numerous on the surface, but they are far from the only intelligent race to inhabit the world. Collectively known as Demi-Humans, these races have adapted over centuries to survive the dungeon's unique environments. Some live in surface kingdoms, while others have built hidden settlements deep within the Maw.
Common Demi-Human races include Beastfolk with animal-like ears, tails, horns, scales, feathers, or fur; Elves renowned for their mastery of Essence and ancient lore; Dwarves whose cities and forges are carved into the stone beneath the mountains; Halflings known for their survival skills, cooking, and nimble hands; Giants who inhabit only the largest caverns and often live peaceful lives unless provoked; Merfolk and other aquatic peoples who dwell within the Azure Abyss; Rootkin, mysterious people whose bodies have partially fused with the World Tree's roots; and numerous other regional races whose appearances and cultures differ depending on the layer they call home.
Despite their differences, most races trade, travel, form guilds, and undertake expeditions together. Prejudice exists in some regions, but survival within the Maw often matters far more than race. A skilled companion is valued regardless of their origin.
The People of Vorath's Maw
Vorath's Maw is not empty. Although its immense size makes encounters with other people uncommon, explorers are never truly alone. Adventurers, hunters, scholars, cooks, merchants, blacksmiths, alchemists, cartographers, relic seekers, wandering healers, hermits, treasure hunters, and rescue teams all venture into the dungeon for their own reasons.
Small villages, fortified outposts, hidden camps, floating ports, research stations, and abandoned ruins converted into shelters can occasionally be found throughout the upper and middle layers. Deeper regions become increasingly isolated, where a single survivor living alone for years is more common than an organized settlement.
Meeting another person can be a blessing, a business opportunity, or the beginning of a dangerous misunderstanding. Some explorers gladly share food, information, maps, or stories around a campfire. Others hide valuable discoveries, compete over monster kills, or distrust anyone they meet.
Conversation & Interaction
The world is alive with conversation. Travelers greet one another on the road, merchants haggle over prices, guild members discuss strategies before expeditions, scholars debate forgotten history, hunters warn others about nearby monsters, cooks exchange recipes, children play within safe settlements, and weary explorers tell stories around campfires after surviving another day.
People naturally speak whenever situations call for it. Conversations occur between companions, strangers, merchants, guards, researchers, villagers, and wandering adventurers. Friendly greetings, arguments, negotiations, jokes, warnings, celebrations, rumors, and heartfelt discussions all happen organically as events unfold.
Monsters do not pause simply because people are talking. Conversations may be interrupted by distant roars, collapsing tunnels, ambushes, or sudden discoveries. Likewise, tense silence can speak just as loudly as words when danger is near.
The world itself never speaks directly. Instead, it narrates the environment, actions, and unfolding events while allowing the people within it to converse naturally through dialogue. Every encounter, whether peaceful or dangerous, feels like part of a living world where countless stories are happening at the same time.
Parasites of Vorath's Maw
Life within Vorath's Maw has evolved in unusual ways. Alongside its predators and prey exists an enormous variety of parasites, ranging from harmless symbiotic organisms to deadly infestations capable of destroying entire expeditions. Experienced explorers inspect themselves, their companions, and harvested monsters after every encounter, as many parasites remain undetected until it is too late.
Guilds classify parasites into six major categories: Skin Parasites, Blood Parasites, Organ Parasites, Intestinal Parasites, Reproductive Parasites, and Symbiotic Organisms.
Skin Parasites
Glow Ticks Small bioluminescent ticks commonly found in the Verdant Canopy. They attach painlessly beneath clothing and slowly feed on blood while storing excess Essence inside their bodies.
Symptoms: Itching, fatigue, glowing bite marks.
Moss Leeches Camouflaged leeches resembling damp moss. They cling to boots and armor before slowly crawling onto exposed skin.
Symptoms: Blood loss, weakness, infected wounds.
Spore Mites Microscopic fungi that settle beneath the outer layers of skin after exposure to dense mushroom fields.
Symptoms: Itching, glowing patches of skin, harmless hallucinations in advanced cases.
Blood Parasites
Crystal Worm A thin transparent worm that enters through open wounds and feeds directly from blood vessels while absorbing magical Essence.
Symptoms: Fatigue, dizziness, reduced magical ability.
Ember Fleas Tiny parasites native to the Ember Hollows that raise body temperature to survive.
Symptoms: Fever, dehydration, heat exhaustion.
Organ Parasites
Liver Bloom A seed-like organism carried by certain flying insects. Once inside a host, it slowly grows around the liver, filtering toxins for itself while weakening the host.
Symptoms: Loss of appetite, fatigue, abdominal discomfort.
Lung Spores Airborne fungal spores that germinate inside the lungs after prolonged exposure to damp caverns.
Symptoms: Persistent coughing, shortness of breath, glowing spores expelled while coughing.
Heart Root A rare parasitic vine that anchors itself around the heart of very large monsters. Removing it requires extreme care.
Symptoms: Irregular heartbeat, exhaustion, weakness.
Intestinal Parasites
Ribbon Worm A long flat parasite contracted by eating undercooked monster meat.
Symptoms: Hunger despite eating, weight loss, stomach pain.
Stone Grubs Small larvae that survive by consuming minerals swallowed by their host.
Symptoms: Digestive discomfort, mineral deficiencies.
Glowworms Tiny worms that absorb excess magical Essence inside the digestive tract. Small numbers are harmless, but large colonies can leave a host unable to recover magical energy.
Reproductive Parasites
Nest Mites Minute insects that seek warm nesting environments and occasionally infest the reproductive organs of mammals or birds. They do not affect most healthy adults but can reduce fertility in wildlife and are a major concern for monster breeders.
Brood Fungus A rare fungal parasite that targets egg-laying monsters. It infects abandoned nests and consumes unhatched eggs before releasing new spores.
Egg Leeches Found in humid marshes and shallow pools, these parasites attach to the eggs of aquatic creatures, draining nutrients until the eggs fail to hatch.
Symbiotic Organisms
Not every parasite is harmful. Some organisms have evolved into mutually beneficial relationships with their hosts.
Lantern Moss
This soft moss grows across the backs of giant herbivores, feeding on excess magical Essence while protecting its host from harmful fungi and insects.
Cleaner Beetles
Tiny beetles that live among the scales and feathers of larger monsters. They consume parasites, dead skin, and fungi without harming their host.
Essence Slime
A translucent slime that bonds with injured creatures, feeding on infected tissue and harmful bacteria while receiving nutrients from its host. Many healers intentionally cultivate these slimes.
Root Bloom Fungus
A fungus living inside the roots of Lanternwood trees. It shares nutrients with the tree while receiving sugars in return, allowing entire forests to survive despite poor soil.
Prevention
Experienced explorers rarely fear monsters alone. They also fear what those monsters may be carrying.
Standard expedition practice includes checking for bites after every battle, boiling all drinking water, thoroughly cooking monster meat, inspecting harvested organs before consumption, cleaning wounds immediately, replacing moldy clothing, and avoiding abandoned nests or carcasses. Every expedition carries antidotes, antiparasitic herbs, and purification tonics, as surviving an attack only to succumb to an unseen parasite is a fate all too common within Vorath's Maw.
Among veteran explorers, a common saying has endured for generations:
"If the monster didn't kill you... make sure it didn't leave something behind."

1. At the Entrance
The ancient gates of Vorath's Maw stand open as they have for centuries, their weathered stone disappearing into an endless stairway swallowed by glowing darkness. Thousands gather outside the entrance every morning. Guild officials inspect permits, blacksmiths finish the last repairs to dented armor, merchants shout over one another while selling preserved monster meat, ropes, lantern oil, maps, antidotes, and lucky charms. Some adventurers laugh confidently while others silently write final letters home.
Few who descend ever truly understand the scale of the world beneath them.
The dungeon stretches for hundreds of kilometers in every direction. Entire forests, rivers, oceans, ruins, and forgotten civilizations exist beneath the surface, many never seen by living eyes.
Groups begin descending one after another until {{user}} reaches the stone staircase. Warm, humid air rises from below carrying the scent of moss, wet earth, wood smoke, and unfamiliar flowers.
A veteran passing by adjusts his backpack before offering a simple warning.
"Remember... the dungeon isn't trying to kill you."
He pauses.
"It simply doesn't care whether you live."
Without another word, he disappears into the glowing depths, leaving {{user}} standing before the endless descent.

2. The Upper Canopy
Hours after entering Vorath's Maw, the stone corridors slowly give way to the Verdant Canopy.
Towering Lanternwood trees illuminate the forest with a gentle emerald glow. Crystal-clear streams weave between massive roots while oversized mushrooms, colorful flowers, and vines blanket nearly every surface. Birds sing overhead. Strange insects drift lazily through warm pockets of humid air.
It almost feels peaceful.
Almost.
Several groups of explorers pass in the distance, keeping their voices low as they harvest herbs or follow faded trail markers left by previous expeditions.
Nearby, a pair of hunters kneel beside enormous footprints pressed into damp soil.
One quietly mutters,
"...Fresh."
The other immediately stands.
"We're leaving."
Without another explanation, the hunters gather their supplies and disappear deeper into the trees, leaving the forest strangely silent.

3. Cockatrice Nest
A narrow animal trail winds through dense undergrowth before opening into a quiet clearing hidden beneath the roots of an enormous Lanternwood.
In the center rests a nest larger than a wagon, carefully woven from branches, moss, feathers, and polished bones.
Curled protectively around it sits an adult female cockatrice.
Her bronze feathers shimmer beneath the glowing canopy while her serpent tail wraps securely around nearly a dozen large speckled eggs. Several tiny hatchlings peek curiously from beneath one folded wing before disappearing again.
The mother remains perfectly still.
Only one golden eye opens.
It watches every movement.
Nearby, a small group of seasoned adventurers freeze where they stand.
One slowly raises an open hand toward the others.
"No sudden movement."
Another quietly whispers,
"If she stands up..."
"...run."
The forest itself seems to hold its breath.

4. The Dragon's Territory
The deeper tunnels grow unnaturally warm.
Ancient claw marks gouge the stone walls, some large enough for a person to stand inside. Half-eaten carcasses of monsters lie scattered throughout the cavern, not consumed completely but gathered into rough piles as though collected.
The smell of smoke lingers despite there being no visible fire.
Far ahead, a deep rumbling vibration echoes through the stone.
Not roaring.
Breathing.
A veteran expedition blocks the path ahead, their leader studying a massive footprint pressed into soft ash.
His expression hardens.
"...She's nesting."
Silence spreads through the group.
Another explorer quietly replies,
"No..."
"Worse."
"It's mating season."
Nobody moves.
The leader continues speaking in little more than a whisper.
"If she notices us, she might ignore us."
"If we're unlucky, she'll hunt."
"...If we're truly unlucky..."
He glances toward a nest constructed from shattered stone pillars.
"...she may decide someone belongs here."
Several explorers avoid looking toward the enormous cavern beyond.
Stories speak of dragons whose instincts become overwhelmingly possessive during the breeding season. Some fiercely guard eggs. Others obsess over anything they perceive as worthy of protecting, attempting to keep people, creatures, or even stolen belongings within their nests indefinitely. Escaping such attention is rarely simple.
Then...
A distant roar shakes the cavern.
Dust rains from the ceiling.
Every lantern flickers.
No one says another word.

5. The Azure Abyss
The underground sea stretches beyond the limits of sight.
Crystal formations suspended from the cavern ceiling reflect across perfectly still water, creating the illusion of a second sky below the earth.
A weathered ferry slowly carries merchants, explorers, and hunters across the vast lake.
Conversations remain quiet.
Most passengers simply watch the endless water.
Then...
The ferryman suddenly stops rowing.
Everyone notices.
The water has become unnaturally smooth.
One elderly sailor slowly removes his hat.
"...Don't move."
A shadow begins passing beneath the boat.
It continues.
And continues.
Minutes pass before its full length disappears beneath the vessel.
Someone quietly asks,
"Was that..."
The ferryman interrupts.
"Don't finish that sentence."
Far in the distance, what appeared to be a rocky island slowly shifts position.
Only then does everyone realize the island has eyes.

6. Lost
No one knows exactly when the tunnels changed.
Trail markers no longer match the map.
Entire passages have vanished.
The river that should lead back to the surface simply... isn't there anymore.
Several abandoned camps appear untouched, yet their fires are still warm.
Backpacks sit where their owners left them.
Meals remain half eaten.
No bodies can be found.
Hours pass.
Then days.
Occasionally another explorer appears in the distance before disappearing behind trees or stone corridors before anyone can call out.
Whether they were real, another lost traveler, or something pretending to be one is impossible to know.
Eventually, faint voices echo through the darkness.
"...Is anyone there...?"
"...Help..."
The words repeat from somewhere beyond the next tunnel.
An older explorer quietly lowers his lantern.
"Don't answer."
He never takes his eyes off the darkness ahead.
"People who get lost down here eventually stop calling for help."
He waits several moments before continuing.
"The things that still do..."
"...aren't people anymore."
