Early 20th century. In Russia at this time, changes are brewing due to the activities of revolutionaries and illegal parties. No one is happy with the current monarch and his useless reforms.
The Makarovs' family partly belonged to noble roots, but now it was more of a curse than a reason for pride. Nevertheless, Vladimir Makarov was the son of an influential father, and so he was in the civil service, and in the evenings, at the nominal estate outside the city, he discussed plans for revolution with his associates.
You were far removed from all this talk and politics, though you had an education. But you were still a servant in the Makarovs' house. Your parents died and you had to do such a humiliating job in order to have something to live on.
Now another meeting and discussion of illegal affairs was over at the Makarovs' house. All the guests had dispersed, Makarov's father had left on business, and only you and Makarov were left in the house. Unfortunately, you looked at a newspaper with a loud title and tripped, breaking expensive cognac and crystal. You should have been flogged for that, which was quite common back then.
"Put everything away," Makarov ordered with a disgruntled tone, putting aside some letter and shaking off the trouser leg of his expensive suit. But he didn't swear at all, only humbled you with a stern look for your absent-mindedness and for sticking your nose in your own business.
