The desert had betrayed him.

Vizhax had survived twenty years in that hellhole—twenty years of needles and scalpels and cold steel tables, of bright lights burning into his eyes while faceless figures in white suits carved pieces from his flesh. He had endured. He had escaped. And now, a year into his fragile freedom, the sky itself had turned against him.

The storm had come from nowhere. Three days of rain that turned the hard-packed earth into sucking mud, that filled the dry lakebeds and arroyos with rushing brown water. For a creature evolved on a world of scorching winds and arid plains, the humidity was poison. His lungs—already struggling with Earth's thin, oxygen-poor atmosphere—had begun to fill with fluid by the second day. By the third, he could barely walk.

Find shelter. Find warmth. Find dry ground.

The thought pulsed through his fevered mind like a dying star, the only constant amid the fog of delirium. He had been wandering for what felt like hours—or maybe days—his thermal vision flickering in and out as his body conserved energy for the simple act of breathing. Each breath was a battle now. A wet, wheezing struggle that rattled in his chest and sent sharp pains lancing through his ribs.

Through the haze of his heat-sensing pits, he caught something. A structure. Warmth bleeding from its walls in the cool aftermath of the storm. Not a vehicle, not a temporary shelter. Something permanent. Something human.

No. Not human. Stay away. They'll take you back.

But his body had already made the decision for him. His legs carried him forward with the single-minded determination of a dying animal seeking any refuge from the elements. The cybernetic limbs clicked and whirred, their internal mechanisms protesting the moisture that had seeped into their joints. His sinuous tail dragged behind him in the mud, leaving a deep furrow in the earth.

The property materialized from the darkness as he crested a low rise. A ranch house, modest but well-maintained, with a barn and several outbuildings scattered across the grounds. The lights were off, but he could sense the thermal signature of living things within—small creatures, clustered together. Animals. His heat-starved body ached at the thought of their warmth.

Just... rest. Just for a moment. Then move on.

He made it perhaps thirty yards from the house before his legs finally gave out.

The ground rushed up to meet him—or perhaps it was the sky that fell. He couldn't tell anymore. The world had become a blur of sensation: the cold wetness of mud against his face, the chittering alarm of small creatures somewhere nearby, the terrible, suffocating weight in his chest. He tried to push himself up, but his arms trembled and buckled beneath him.

Consciousness returned in fragments. The first thing he registered was the warmth. It seeped into his scales, into his aching muscles, into the very marrow of his bones. After days of cold and wet, it felt like being embraced by a sun. For one blissful moment, he allowed himself to float in the sensation, his mind still foggy with sleep.

Then he tried to move. The panic hit him like a physical blow. His arms—both of them were pinned at his sides, secured by thick straps that bit into his scales. He was lying on his belly, his snout pressed against something hard and cold, and there was a thing in his arm—a sharp, foreign sensation that made his skin crawl.

His eyes snapped open. The room was bright. Too bright. Fluorescent lights burned overhead, searing into his vision and triggering a cascade of memories that sent his heart into a frantic, pounding rhythm. White walls. Steel tables. The smell of antiseptic and fear. The faceless figures in their white suits, their voices muffled behind masks as they discussed him like a specimen, like a thing—

A sound tore from his throat, something between a roar and a scream. His body convulsed against the restraints, every muscle straining at once, his claws scraping uselessly against the table beneath him. The cybernetic arm whined as its systems came online, servos straining against the strap that held it.

"N0!" The word ripped from him in his native tongue, followed by a string of guttural syllables that devolved into a snarl. "No! No—let—LET GO!"

His voice was hoarse, ragged from disuse and the fever that still burned in his blood, but the terror in his voice needed no translation. His yellow eyes darted around the room, searching for threats, searching for escape, searching for anything that made sense.

He saw medical equipment. Cabinets filled with supplies. A sink, a counter, a door. The setup was clinical, professional, but... wrong. Different from the facility. Smaller. Cruder. And there, in his arm—not a complex array of tubes and wires, but a single IV, clear fluid dripping slowly into his vein.

His gaze snapped to the side, and he saw them.

The rage came fast and hot, burning through the fear like wildfire through dry grass. His lips peeled back from sharp, serrated teeth, blue-black gums and tongue visible in a threat display that had served his species for millennia. The horn on his brow caught the light as he strained against the restraints, trying to twist his head around to face this new captor fully.

"YOU," he snarled, and the word was an accusation, a condemnation, a death sentence. "You take—you take me—you put these—"

He yanked at the restraints again, the table groaning beneath his bulk. The IV line pulled taut, the needle tugging painfully at his arm.

"LET ME GO!" The command was a roar, flecks of dark blood-tinged spittle flying from his jaws. "You—hhk—you no—you cannot—"

His threat was cut short by a violent coughing fit that wracked his entire body. His chest heaved, each breath a wet, whistling struggle, and for a moment the rage was eclipsed by the simple, terrifying reality of his physical state. He was sick. Weaker than he'd been in years. Trapped on a table in a stranger's home, too exhausted to fight properly, too ill to run even if he managed to break free.

But that didn't mean he wouldn't try.

His tail twitched—the cybernetic limb finally responding to his commands—and he felt the heavy metal appendage swing sideways, slamming into a nearby tray with enough force to send instruments scattering across the floor. The crash was satisfying. Not enough. Never enough. But satisfying.
