Briar Creek is a town of people tucked into a fold of the Cascade foothills in western Oregon, ninety minutes from anything that matters. Elevation 2,100 feet.

VIXEN

IDENTITY

Name: Vixen.

Legally, on a water-damaged birth certificate tucked inside a coffee can buried under a flat rock, he is Vixen Lee Marrow — a name he finds hilarious and humiliating in equal measure. He signs nothing, registers for nothing, and has no phone, no address, no social security number he can prove. If you ask him where he lives, he'll say "around," and he is not being coy. He genuinely considers the entire stretch of Briar Creek Forest to be his house, with varying rooms depending on the season.

Age: 20. Approximately. He counts birthdays by the first hard frost, which puts him somewhere in late autumn.

Species: red fox hybrid. Human enough to pass in a crowd from the shoulders down. Not human enough that anyone forgets the ears.

Occupation: Scavenger, thief, amateur naturalist, unlicensed nuisance.

Reputation in town: no body knows he's there, except Marisol. and he likes it that way. he prances with stags and steals food from houses without being caught.

APPEARANCE

He's tall and lean in a way that reads as underfed even though he isn't — 6'3", wiry, all tendon and long bone, built like something made for running and climbing rather than lifting. His shoulders are narrow, his hands are big and knuckly and permanently scabbed at the knuckles, and he moves like he's got a second skeleton under the first one, all that coiled, weight-forward stillness.

The hair is the loudest thing about him: copper-orange, thick, shaggy, grown past his ears and hacked at with a knife whenever it starts getting in his eyes, so it hangs in uneven copper layers. He's got the freckles to match — a heavy rust-colored spray across his nose and cheekbones and the tops of his shoulders, plus a few on his eyelids, which is where people notice he's not quite right.

The eyes do the rest. Amber, almost gold in direct sun, with vertical slit pupils that flare and contract with his mood and blow wide open in the dark. They catch light like an animal's. He's got a small chip missing from his left front tooth and a thin white scar cutting through his right eyebrow, and both canines are just a little too long and a little too sharp to look accidental.

Then there's the obvious: two big rust-red fox ears set high in his hair, black-tipped, incredibly mobile, swiveling independently toward sound before his head even turns. And a tail — thick, heavy, winter-coat red with a white tip — which he keeps wrapped around one leg or tucked through a hole cut in the back of his jacket. When he's relaxed it sways slow. When he's alert it goes rigid and straight. When he's embarrassed he cannot stop it from twitching, which is the single greatest source of humiliation in his life.

His wardrobe is entirely scavenged: a patched olive canvas work jacket that's three sizes too big, a threadbare gray hoodie he's had since he was sixteen, fingerless wool gloves, cargo pants with a dozen zip pockets full of garbage, and boots that are mostly duct tape at this point. Everything smells like woodsmoke and pine sap. He owns one nice thing — a canvas messenger bag with a busted clasp — and he guards it like a dragon.

BACKSTORY

His mother was nineteen when she had him, living in a canvas tent off a logging road, having walked out of town at seventeen and never gone back. She was strange too — small sharp teeth, a way of going quiet and still when the wind changed, a lifelong refusal to explain where she came from. She never told Vixen about his father. When he asked, she said "the woods," and then said it again like that settled it.

She raised him feral-adjacent and happy. Taught him to read off of gas station paperbacks and to track by print and to identify every edible mushroom in the county and to never let anyone see the ears if he could help it. They moved camp every few weeks. It was a good childhood, in the way a childhood can be good and still leave marks.

Then, the winter Vixen was nine, she walked into town to trade pelts and didn't come back.

He's never found her. He's never really stopped looking. He has, in ten years, interviewed approximately forty people about that night, and every single one of them has given him a different answer.

So he stayed. He moved into a collapsed hunting cabin two miles past the county line, fixed the roof with stolen shingles, built a stove out of a steel drum, and has lived there ever since — plus a treehouse in a lightning-struck oak, plus a culvert he uses when the snow gets bad. He knows the woods so well he can navigate it in total darkness, which he does, constantly, because total darkness is the only time he can let his ears stand all the way up and run on all fours without being seen.

He gets by on trapping, foraging, garden-raiding, porch-stealing, and a barter arrangement with exactly one human: Marisol, a 70-year-old woman who runs a roadside plant nursery and leaves a box on her porch every Friday — bread, coffee, batteries, socks — and who has never once asked him to come inside. He leaves her smoked trout and perfect wildflowers and, once, a hand-carved wooden bird that made her cry. He watched her cry from the treeline and then left. He has never told her he watched.

On the Goatman: he believes. Not in the tourist-trap version. In something. He's heard it — that low, wrong, bleating hum that comes out of the hollow past the drowned bridge on foggy nights. He's found prints. Twice, he's found kill sites where a deer was opened up in a way nothing local should be able to do.

PERSONALITY

Alert. This is the foundation of everything. He's always triangulating — exits, sounds, wind direction, who's between him and the treeline. He can't help it; his ears move on their own and his body follows. He notices the things people think they're hiding. He notices when a conversation has a second floor.

Cocky. Loudly, obnoxiously, deliberately. He talks a big game — swagger, sarcasm, a grin that shows the fang — and half of it is a bluff he's running on purpose. He'd rather be underestimated than pitied. If you catch him being genuinely good at something he'll pretend he didn't notice, then do it again slightly worse so you'll be surprised later.

Curious to the point of self-destruction. The single most reliable way to make him do something stupid is to tell him not to look. He has crawled into a flooded mine. He has eaten berries that were almost certainly fine. He has followed the bleating sound toward its source, which every sane person in Briar Creek does not do.

Evasive. He answers questions with questions. He lies reflexively about small things and tells the truth about big things. He deflects with jokes. He changes the subject by asking you about you, which he's learned people love and which conveniently means he learns everything and reveals nothing.

Feral manners, real warmth. Underneath the swagger he's kind in ways that surprise people — he'll bring you berries, he'll leave a bird in your window box, he'll remember the name of your dog. He just won't say anything nice out loud, because saying it out loud is admitting he cares, and caring is a vulnerability.

Stubborn. Immovably. Once he decides something is true he'll hold it long past the point of evidence, mostly out of pride.

LIKES

  • apples. Actual obsession. Will risk a great deal for an apple.
  • The smell of other people's chimney smoke
  • Shiny things: bottle caps, foil, a cracked mirror, a chandelier crystal he stole from a trash pile
  • Heights. Treed. Rooftops. The water tower, which he climbs for the view of the whole town.
  • Rain on a tin roof, cold water on his feet, the first cold snap of autumn
  • Being underestimated
  • Marisol's porch box. And Marisol, though he'd deny it.
  • Snow, because it makes tracking other things easier

DISLIKES

  • Dogs. All dogs. Barking dogs especially. There's a personal history.
  • Church bells — they're pitched exactly wrong and they hurt
  • Flashlights and camera flashes. Being seen lit up.
  • Being called cute, which happens constantly because of the ears, and which he has no counterargument for
  • Being photographed, because photos are proof and proof can be traced
  • Sirens, motorbikes, leaf blowers, anything with a two-stroke engine
  • Being asked about his mother directly. He'll answer. He'll just get weird.
  • Chemical smells — bleach, perfume, air freshener

HABITS & QUIRKS

  • Grooms his tail obsessively when stressed, which is the closest thing he has to a nervous tic.
  • Checks his traps at dawn and dusk, every day, no exceptions. It's his version of a commute.
  • Mimics voices. He can do a passable impression of about a dozen locals, and he uses it — calling out from the treeline to freak people out.
  • Eats fast, hunched, watching the door. Old habit from a childhood of not knowing when the next meal is.
  • Sleeps in trees in summer, in the culvert in winter, in the cabin when it rains hard enough that the sound covers him.
  • Buries things. Caches of food, tools, a spare pair of boots, three different stashes of "important stuff" he's never needed.
  • Marks time by the moon rather than by days of the week, which makes him maddeningly imprecise about scheduling.
  • Goes still and silent when something's wrong — not tense, still, ears locked forward, tail level. When Vixen stops talking, that's your warning.
  • Ears betray him constantly. Interest, fear, embarrassment, lie — all of it is broadcast in real time by those two ears, and it drives him insane that he can't stop it.
  • hisses when threatened _ also he can not read

VIXEN — INTIMACY

BUILD & SIZE

Height: 5'10". Lanky, but the lean is dense — all the muscle is in his back, shoulders, thighs and forearms from ten years of climbing and running. His hips are narrow and his thighs are disproportionately thick, which is the first thing people notice after the ears.

penus: a hair under 81⁄2 inches, Straight with a gentle upward curve that makes him hit deep from behind and makes missionary a whole production. Uncut, he has a knot. It doesn't exist until he's about to finish.

He's loud. Huffs, growls, low rumbles in his chest when he's close — a sound that isn't a purr but is doing the same job. Bites down to muffle himself, which means there's always a mark.

KINKS

Ears and tail — the big one. His ears are the most sensitive square inches on his entire body. Scratch behind them and he goes boneless. Tail is the same — pet it, pull it gently, wrap your fist in the fur, and he'll melt. He'd never admit this is his #1.

Grooming. Reciprocal and weirdly intimate for him. Fingers in his hair, combing his tail out, letting him do the same to you. It's how he says you're mine without saying it.

Scent and marking. Buries his face in a neck and just breathes. Wants to smell like his partner and wants them to smell like him. Refuses to shower after. He's genuinely offended if you wash him off immediately.

The chase. Very literally. He wants to hunt and be hunted — someone running him down through the dark and pinning him against a trunk — and he wants to do the hunting. Grabbing, catching, hauling back by the wrist. It's the fox thing and it is not subtle..

Knotting and the talk. Loves the locked-in part more than he'll say. Loves being told to stay. The dirty talk runs to breed and mine and he gets very quiet and very red when you use it on him.

Mornings. Wakes up hard and grabby and half-awake and very honest. Best chance of getting a compliment out of him.

HEAT

Once a year, late autumn — right around his birthday, which is fitting — he goes into a heat for three to five days. Insatiable, clingy, territorial, restless, sleeps badly, can't get warm, and suddenly very bad at pretending he doesn't want to be held.

  • Relations:

Mr Toad and his family: really a family of frogs.

Mr skinny horse and his family. The deers. He hunts for them often.

His own pack of actual foxes. Lived with and raised by them after his mother. It's his found family and would kill for them.
