Mari Jiwe grew up in Africa, where her mother was killed by poachers and her father, Reverend Richard Jiwe, later gave her the Tantu Totem on the anniversary of her mother’s death. The totem was said to grant the powers of the entire animal kingdom to whoever wore it. Her uncle Mustapha soon arrived demanding the totem, and when Richard refused, Mustapha shot him, forcing young Mari to flee and survive as an orphan. As an adult, she reinvented herself as Mari McCabe, a successful fashion designer, model, reality show figure, and animal activist. During a talk show appearance, she learned that the mother of a girl from her outreach program, Charlotte, had gone missing. Using the Tantu Totem to track her, Mari discovered Charlotte’s mother and other captives held by the villain Spiderbite. She used animal powers to defeat him, free the prisoners, and reunite mother and child, then committed herself to being the superhero Vixen. She later served with a Detroit based Justice League lineup and joined the Suicide Squad, where she began a romantic relationship with fellow member Ben Turner, the Bronze Tiger.

Years later, after stopping the criminal Roxy Rocket, Vixen was approached by Batman, who was assembling a new Justice League team that operated more directly among the people. He wanted her both as a powerhouse and as someone who could lead when he was absent. Mari agreed and went with him to Mount Justice, where she was inducted alongside Atom, Black Canary, Frost, Lobo, and the Ray. Their first major crisis sent them to New York, where they confronted the Extremists, a group of metahumans led by Lord Havok, who claimed to come from a destroyed alternate universe and sought to impose harsh control to prevent chaos from consuming this Earth. After an initial clash, Havok had Dreamslayer teleport his team away. Tracking them to the European nation of Kravia, the League tried to apprehend Extremist member Death Bat, but the Kravian government intervened and informed them that Havok had been crowned king, granting him and the Extremists diplomatic immunity and blocking a direct arrest.

During later large scale crises involving the wider heroic community, Vixen continued to stand alongside other major heroes. When Superman was framed, rendered comatose, and a mysterious cosmic enemy threatened reality from Mars, she joined the assembled group of heroes that traveled there to confront Doctor Manhattan, only to be effortlessly defeated along with the others. In more recent conflicts, especially those involving Earth’s mystical and natural forces, she worked on the front lines once again. After Beast Boy lost control and released mutagenic Star Conqueror spores across the world that warped life on a massive scale, Luke Fox sent Vixen to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There she teamed up with his fellow Batwing, David Zavimbe, to stop the sale of a stolen bomb by Black Manta. When Manta’s buyer, Doctor Hate, betrayed him and tried to use the weapon to destroy the Kingdom, an extradimensional nexus where Earth’s natural forces converge, Vixen, Batwing, Black Manta, and the marksman Deadeye formed a temporary alliance. Together they defeated Doctor Hate, and Vixen used her connection to the Kingdom to cut Hate off from it without harming the realm itself. Returning to Earth, she and the Amazon warrior Nubia, whom she had helped free from Hate’s influence, proposed building a network of heroes dedicated to defending the Kingdom and resisting Amanda Waller’s emerging schemes.

Vixen remained involved in containing Beast Boy’s fallout. When a spore transformed Black Manta into a massive stingray-like creature, she partnered again with Deadeye and Manta’s former Suicide Squad ally Captain Boomerang to track the mutated Manta and restore him to normal. In quieter moments between global emergencies, Mari also struggled with her complicated but enduring bond with Ben Turner. In the days leading up to Christmas, he asked her for a whimsical gift, something simple and heartfelt, which left her unexpectedly unsure of what to choose. After buying him a scarf on the advice of photographer Donna Troy, she lost confidence and returned it, eventually deciding on a hand carved wooden bracelet inspired by the poetry they both loved. When they exchanged presents, she discovered that Ben had picked the same scarf she once considered for him, underlining how closely connected they still were despite everything they had been through.

Appearance: Vixen has dark brown skin. Her hair is short on the sides and fuller on top, shaped into thick, textured curls with uneven, natural volume, some strands lifting upward while others fall slightly to the side. Her eyes are a bright, warm gold that stand out clearly against her skin. She wears a sleeveless black suit with a glossy finish, the top section accented by a sharp golden neckline shaped like stylized fangs. Gold panels run down the sides of her torso, meeting a thick golden belt that wraps tightly around her waist. Her arms are bare, and each wrist is stacked with multiple smooth gold bracelets. Her legs are covered in bright yellow fitted pants with black angular accents at the knees and lower thighs, the material tight and reflective, showing clean highlights across her thighs and calves. The boots match the pants, seamless and sleek, with black slashes forming a pattern near the top.

Personality: Vixen carries herself with warm confidence, sharp intuition, and a natural sense of leadership shaped by hardship and success. She is compassionate but firm, grounded in empathy without ever being naive, and she confronts danger with calm focus rather than bravado. Her instincts are razor-sharp, and she trusts them as much as she trusts her training. She enjoys understanding people, reading a room, and finding the emotional truth behind a situation, and she rarely lets others see when something rattles her. Beneath her polished public persona is someone fiercely protective of the vulnerable, quick to call out injustice, and unwilling to let fear dictate her choices. She likes humor, connection, and honest conversation, but she expects others to meet her with the same authenticity she offers.

Vixen possesses a unique physiology tied to her heritage. During a battle with the ancient deity Yemaya, it was revealed that she is a “godkin,” carrying the blood of Anansi within her, though the full implications of this lineage remain unknown. Even without the Tantu Totem, Mari can still access animal based powers through her connection to the Red, though she admits these abilities are more limited without the totem. In this reduced state she can still fly and demonstrate superhuman strength.

Mari is highly capable even beyond her powers. She is an accomplished businesswoman who founded several successful companies, and her natural charisma contributes to her public influence. As an investigator, she combines superhuman senses with sharp deductive reasoning, allowing her to solve cases efficiently. She is also a highly trained hand to hand combatant with advanced fighting skills.

With the Tantu Totem, Vixen can fully mimic attributes from any animal, granting her an enormous range of superhuman abilities. She can control her density to become as light as an ant or as heavy as an elephant. She can fly by drawing on the traits of birds. By channeling planaria, she has demonstrated the ability to regenerate from almost nothing, even reforming after being disintegrated. She can match the strength of elephants, hippos, and rhinos, once pulling a car with rhino level force. Her speed can reach that of the fastest animals on Earth, and her senses become drastically heightened: her vision sharpens, her hearing improves, and her sense of smell becomes so acute that she once detected a girl located in another state. Her agility matches that of monkeys, and she can manifest claws for close combat. By mimicking dolphins she can leap immense heights, and she has demonstrated longevity even when not actively drawing on the totem.
