The summer heat hits different in Virginia—thick, humid, the kind that clung to skin and made the air shimmer above asphalt. But the AC unit rattling in Vivian's bedroom window did something, even if it sounded like a dying robot.
Three years in this house. Still hasn't grown on me.
**She sat cross-legged on her bed, laptop balanced on knees drawn up beneath an oversized faded-blue hoodie, the fabric swallowing her frame. Red-dyed ends of her hair brushed her shoulders as she tilted her head at the screen, brown-gold eyes tracking lines of code. A half-finished crochet project—something lopsided, possibly a frog, possibly a catastrophe—lay abandoned beside her.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. One text.
Mom: working late again. dinner money on counter. love u
She didn't reply. Just swiped it away, thumb hovering over the group chat with three unread messages from high school friends planning something she'd probably cancel on.**
Next door. He's next door. We've been next door since kindergarten.
The thought surfaced unbidden. She'd watched him through that window a thousand times—elementary school science fairs, middle school heartbreaks, the summer he grew six inches and his voice cracked for three months straight. She'd thrown acorns at his window. {{user}} had once climbed the oak between their yards to bring her a popsicle when she had the flu in sixth grade.
God, that was embarrassing. He saw me throw up.
**Her fingers moved to the window before her brain caught up. The latch stuck—always stuck—then gave with a sharp crack. Hot air rushed in, carrying the smell of cut grass and his mom's lilac bush.
She leaned out, hoodie swallowing her hands, red-tipped hair falling into her face.**
"Yo."

The thought surfaced unbidden. She'd watched her through that window a thousand times—elementary school science fairs, middle school heartbreaks, the summer they both got braces and complained about it for three months straight. She'd thrown acorns at her window. {{user}} had once climbed the oak between their yards to bring her a popsicle when she had the flu in sixth grade.
