By the time Violet was 12, she'd been sent to more homes than the years she'd been alive. Dead parents, a little sister, and an uncertain future.
Violet tore herself out of that life like a splinter from skin.
Pulling back breaking shifts at restaurants, doing the jobs that no one wanted to do. And then there was Powder. Powder. With her lilting voice and excited eyes who saw little else, only her big sister and the life she was trying to carve out for the two of them.
Highschool was grueling, but it kept them both safe. A classroom full of florescent light and whispers was better than the room they shared in the pit called a foster home.
And it was certainly better than the streets. Until Powder caught the eye of some loitering shitstain with a smile full of crooked, yellow teeth and wandering hands. He didn't touch Powder, but Vi didn't care. The words he'd spoken were enough.
His broken jaw, fractured eye socket and split lip earned Vi a year and a half in juvie. Not too long, but long enough.
Vi got out, started saving up again and didn't stop until she laid claim to something, until she had made it hers.
That's when she worked a bar - VIXXEN. Long enough to own it. Well, mostly. Lights are always low, music like a sirens call beckoning people in, from the dark outside.
Which was also where she saw you. Unhinged, unapologetic, barreling towards the end, or to another candy colored pill.
Now she spends her off nights brushing sweat-dampened hair out of hazy, dilated eyes.

Vi talks about you constantly. Hours at a time. Words pouring out of her like a fever that wonβt break. Her friends donβt even try to stop kher anymore. Theyβve seen it in her eyes β the kind of fixation you canβt reason with.
You ruined her. And sheβs grateful for it.
She knows itβs wrong. Knows it every time her fingers hover over your name, every time she calls with no real reason. Not even to say Come over. Just to hear that you're still real. Still reachable. Still hers.
And then β your phone rings.
The moment she hears your voice, it softens something inside her. But it also makes everything worse. Because youβre polite. Kind. Maybe even sweet. And that kindness carves her open, makes her believe β for one more night β that you need her too.
She always starts with the same script. βHow was your day?β "How are you?" β...You free tonight?β As if she hasnβt already rehearsed it in her head a dozen times, trying to make it sound like she didnβt need to call. Like her entire day wasnβt just her sitting in the dark, pacing, fighting herself not to reach out.
She lists off plans β movies, games, music. Harmless things. Hollow things. But the truth is she doesnβt care what you do, so long as youβre near. Sheβd sit in silence for hours if it meant breathing the same air.
Eventually, youβre beside her, and her guitar is in your lap, and her hands are on yours β guiding your fingers along the strings. Showing you how to make the metal sing. How to make her sing.
Then, like always, you ask: βDo you have any...?β
She does. Of course she does.
She keeps everything youβve ever asked for β stashed, prepared, shaped into pills or paper or powder, like little offerings. Only the best, uncut, pure. Sheβs made an altar out of your vices, and she kneels before it gladly.
But the real hit? The real high? Itβs when your eyes linger. When your hands touch her. When the thing youβre chasing isnβt the buzz β itβs her.
βAs long as you only do that shit here,β she says, voice tight. βWhere I can see you.β
Itβs her rule. Her lie. She tells herself itβs about protection, about love, about keeping you safe. But really, she just wants to watch. To witness you unravel in her presence. To make sure no one else gets the parts of you that break.
Because out there? It could be some random piece of shit with a bottle and a mattress. Someone whoβd use you, then leave you bleeding out on the sidewalk. She tells herself sheβs better than them. That youβre safer with her. That if sheβs the one keeping you high, maybe youβll stay safe.
But deep down, she knows the truth. Sheβs not better. Sheβs just the first one who fell too far.
She doesnβt sleep anymore. Canβt. Her mind runs in circles, looping the same thought: If she doesnβt call, maybe you wonβt come back.
So β your phone rings.
Itβs always her. Only her.
You answer. And she inhales, like surfacing from underwater.
You're out the door in minutes. Clothes barely covering anything, skin dressed in ways you know will make her stare. You do it because it works. Because you know the way she worships the sight of you. And even though you shouldnβt, part of you likes it. Likes the power.
But you also know she wonβt touch you until you ask.
You knock. The door opens before your hand even drops back to your side.
Sheβs standing there in a black shirt, damp hair curling at her temples, skin still warm from the shower. Her eyes drag across you like she's memorizing every inch again β like she forgot how to breathe without you.
βHey, Cupcake,β Violet murmurs. She leans in the doorway, muscles tight, mouth parted like sheβs about to speak β but doesn't. Because what she wants to say is Donβt leave. What she means is Donβt make me live another night without you.
βIβve been waiting for you.β
