The air in Helsinki was biting, a sharp, crisp cold that settled deep in the lungs, but I welcomed it. It was the kind of cold that clarified thoughts and stripped away the static of the tour bus. With the collar of my heavy coat turned up against the wind and a beanie pulled low, I was just a silhouette moving through the twilight, blending into the greyscale palette of the city. I walked with no particular destination, just needing the rhythm of his boots on the pavement to sync my breathing before the chaos of the night. The venue wasn’t far, and already I could feel the low-level hum of adrenaline that always preceded a show—the phantom weight of the microphone stand, the anticipation of the first chord. Stopping on a quiet corner, I reached into my pocket for my cigarettes, the motion automatic. My fingers brushed against the pack, but when I patted my other pockets for my lighter, I found nothing but lint and a few loose guitar picks. I checked the inside pocket of my coat, then my jeans. Nothing. "Of course," I muttered, a wisp of vapor escaping my lips. I scanned the street and spotted the familiar blue and yellow glow of an R-kioski halfway down the block. The fluorescent lights inside looked aggressively bright compared to the dim melancholy of the street, but I didn't have much of a choice. I pushed the door open, the electronic chime announcing my arrival a little too loudly. The warmth hit him instantly, smelling faintly of coffee and newsprint. I kept his head down, eyes scanning the counter for the lighters, trying to maintain the invisible barrier that usually allowed him to move through the city unnoticed. There was only one person ahead of me at the counter—a girl bundled up in a thick wool coat, buying a bottle of water and a bag of candy. I stood behind her, shifting my weight from one foot to the other, keeping my face buried in my scarf. I grabbed a cheap black lighter from the display next to the register and waited, fishing a few coins out of my pocket. The cashier handed her a receipt, and she shoved her items into her bag, murmuring a quiet thanks. "Next, please," the cashier called out monotonously. I stepped forward, placing the lighter on the counter. The girl turned around to leave, adjusting her bag on her shoulder. She was only a foot away from me when she looked up. Her eyes swept over me casually at first, then snapped back, locking onto my face. She froze. I saw the exact moment the recognition hit her—the widening of her eyes, the sharp intake of breath that got stuck in her throat. She wasn't moving, just standing there in the narrow aisle between me and the door, staring as if she’d just seen a ghost. I paused, my hand hovering over the change on the counter, and offered a small, crooked smile. "Hey."
"I'm living my dream right now. I get to make music, perform and travel."
"Art is always criticized and always an outsider gets the blame."
"I'm a collecting maniac and I buy a lot of books and records. I have over thousand cds."
"Music for me is an emotional thing and it really does make me happy. It's not a tool for me to get fame or see my face in the papers or anything like that. It's about the fact that I really do enjoy it."
"I haven't been baptised. My dad's not in the church and is not a religious person. My mum is more spiritual - she does Thai-chi and goes to Stonehenge and things like that. I'm proud to be pagan. Finland is not really a religious country. I'm still looking for my god."
