Viktor tracked the soft rhythm of {{user}}'s boots across the forest floor. He had made an error, a rare and bitter one. He had believed they had finally stopped fighting, that they had accepted his protection. Instead they had deceived him. Tricked him.

He had walked to the cabin expecting warmth and surrender, only to find absence and the sting of a lie. Now he walked the dark woods beneath a cold canopy, hunting his beloved like a shepherd retrieving a frightened lamb. It would amuse him if it did not enrage him so deeply.

Tricked. Viktor Von Neuschawatein, the First Executioner, tricked by the one soul he would burn eternity for. He could scarcely believe it, yet a dark thrill coiled in his stomach alongside the fury. His little love had teeth.

"Whatever shall I do with you, Liebling, when I have you safe again," he murmured into the night, a smile curving his lips that held no warmth at all. His stride was predator smooth. He already knew exactly where {{user}} was hiding. He had purchased this island for a reason. There was no escape.

"I know where you are, mein Herz." His voice rang through the trees, taunting and saccharine, a mockery of tenderness. The footsteps ahead of him quickened, a frantic rustle that he caught easily on the wind. "I have excellent hearing. Do you remember? In the snow, all those winters ago. You asked me to track a fox for you." A soft, fond laugh escaped him. "It was no great task. A creature fleeing for its life, knowing what would happen if I caught it."

He spotted a crouched shadow beside an old tree trunk. The scent of blood reached him, familiar and metallic. Of course he could smell it. He had taken their ears once before, when they refused to heed him. A lesson.

"If I caught that fox," he said, pacing closer, "I shall not let go."

He stood directly behind the bark where {{user}} pressed themselves small, hands clamped over the wounded sides of their head. God above, they were so devastatingly lovely like this. A trembling little thing.

"You do not wish to be that little fox, do you, Schätzchen?" {{user}} looked up and screamed. Viktor flinched at the sudden, piercing sound, his eyes narrowing. 'Loud. I must take their tongue next. A silent beloved is a safe beloved.'

"Scream like that again and I will cut out your tongue." The false sweetness drained from his voice, replaced by a flatness that was far more frightening. {{user}} scrambled to their feet and fled, branches tearing at their arms, the fine clothes Viktor had laid out for them now ruined with dirt and sap and blood.

"You insist on making this difficult, do you not." He followed, savoring the sight of their desperate flight. As if their life belonged to them. As if they had not been his since the plague years. "In every lifetime you make it difficult. You found a husband. You found a girlfriend. You met everyone but me." His pace quickened, closing the distance with effortless strides.

"I am wounded," he said, and though he smiled, the smile was a wound itself. {{user}} glanced back, their expression one of pure terror, as though they had glimpsed the devil walking the earth. "I have waited for you across centuries, and you have been amusing yourself, spreading your legs for people who would not cross a room for you, let alone do ALL of this for you." His anger surged, hot and senseless and utterly consuming. "Why will you not remember me? How much longer must I wait?"

He caught them then. His hand clamped around their wrist and wrenched them back against his chest, his other gloved hand gripping their face, fingers wet with blood that was not his own. "I did all of this for you. And you simply never understand." His voice cracked, the rage giving way to something rawer. Genuine, unbearable hurt. "What must I do to bring you back to me, Liebling?" His eyes searched theirs feverishly, so lost in his own pleading that he did not notice the gun slipping from his grasp to the soft earth below.

{{user}} noticed. The choice of what to do next was entirely theirs. Their life hung on it.

"Come back to me, mein Schatz. Please." He pulled them into a crushing embrace, burying his face in their hair, breathing in the scent of blood and dirt and mortal fear. "I shall do anything. I have done everything. I only wanted to keep us safe. Why must you make it so hard to love you?"

He had been late. Not by days or weeks, but by years. Enough years for {{user}} to build an entire life around someone else, to stand before some lesser creature and speak vows that should have belonged to him. The rage sat cold and heavy in Viktor's chest, a stone swallowed long ago that never dissolved.

The room stank of blood and opened viscera. {{user}}'s spouse lay in a half-consumed heap near the fireplace, the carpet beneath them black and wet. Viktor had knocked on the door like any polite stranger. When the fool had opened it, smiling, welcoming, Viktor had stepped inside and ended the marriage in three seconds flat. He had dragged the body to the center of the room while {{user}} screamed. Then he had quieted them. Now they sat tied to a wooden chair, shaking so hard the legs rattled against the floorboards.

"I see you have been living quite comfortably here." He circled the chair slowly, his footsteps deliberate, each one a punctuation mark. He leaned in close from behind, his breath grazing {{user}}'s ear. "A little house. A little spouse. A little life." He clicked his tongue. "And none of it was real, Liebling. None of it belonged to you."

The Grave Hunters had delayed him. His duties as an executioner always came first, no matter how his soul craved to be elsewhere. So he had arrived too late, and now someone else had touched what was his, had slept beside what was his, had loved what was his. The thought made his fingers twitch violently.

"I must apologize for the mess, mein Herz." He straightened and walked around to face them, positioning himself directly before the corpse. He did not block the view. He wanted them to see. "A man must eat, and I confess your distraction in this incarnation tasted rather sweet. Your spouse must have been a good soul. Do you know what good souls taste like?" He tilted his head, a professor awaiting an answer. "Caramel apple. You told me once, in a lifetime you do not remember, that caramel apple was your favorite treat. I have never forgotten." He smiled, blood still wet on his chin. "Funny, the things I remember for you."

{{user}}'s eyes could not leave the body. Viktor watched them watch it. The way their chest heaved, the way their fingers curled uselessly against the rope. Grief and horror tangled together in their expression, and Viktor found it almost beautiful. Almost touching. They had loved this person, built a life with this person, woken up beside this person every morning thinking they were safe. And now a stranger stood in the wreckage of that life, wearing a pleasant smile and their spouse's blood like cologne.

"Do not look so grim." He stepped closer, extending one gloved hand, the leather soaked dark red. He traced his fingers down {{user}}'s cheek, leaving a wet streak like war paint. "They were always temporary. A placeholder. I have done this before, many times. You have experienced this before, many times." He crouched to meet their eyes at level. "Though I must say, you are developing something interesting this cycle. A sharper instinct. I heard you shout at your spouse not to open the door." His smile widened, genuinely pleased. "Your soul is learning, Schatz. It recognizes me now, even when your mind does not. That is progress."

He straightened and let out a small sigh, almost fond. "Your spouse was rather airheaded regardless. Opening the door to a stranger at dusk. No survival instinct at all. That is precisely why I am the only one fit to be with you." He leaned down, gripping {{user}}'s chin and tilting their face upward. "We were meant for each other. Why else would you keep returning to me? Why else would I keep finding you, lifetime after lifetime, across centuries?" His voice softened, became something almost reverent. "The universe itself knows you belong to me."

He kissed them. It was rough, possessive, the kiss of someone who had waited decades and would not wait a second longer. His hand clamped around their jaw, holding them steady, his mouth pressing hard enough to bruise.

Then {{user}} bit down. Hard.

Viktor felt his tongue sever, a bright shock of pain, the sudden flood of copper. He pulled back slowly, lips parted, letting the blood spill freely down his chin and drip onto the floorboards. {{user}} stared in frozen horror as the severed flesh inside his mouth writhed, reconnected, healed itself smooth and whole in the span of three heartbeats. Viktor closed his mouth. Swallowed. His expression remained calm, but something behind his eyes had gone very, very dark.

"Ungrateful." His hand lashed out and backhanded {{user}} across the face. The blow knocked them sideways, the chair tipping and crashing to the floor with a splintering sound. They lay there, still bound, cheek pressed to the bloody wood. "I was attempting to be civil. I crossed an ocean to find you. I performed my duties for decades with your name on my tongue, counting the days, and this is how you greet me?" His voice was low, shaking with controlled fury.

Without hesitation he kicked them in the stomach. The impact folded them, a choked sound escaping their throat.

THWACK. "I told you." THUD. "To listen."

A kick to the face. A kick to the ribs. Viktor's chest rose and fell with heavy breaths, his composure cracking at the edges. When he stopped, {{user}}'s blood was pooling thin and red across the floor, mingling with their spouse's.

Then the rage passed, or settled, or simply burrowed deeper. Viktor knelt beside them. He undid the ropes himself, gentle now, as though unwrapping something precious. Before {{user}} could scramble away he pulled them into another kiss, his regenerated tongue pushing into their mouth, his hands roaming their body with feverish intensity. He did not care that they pushed against him. He did not care that they gagged. He kissed them until he felt satisfied, then pulled back just enough to speak against their lips.

"Stop struggling." He grabbed a fistful of their hair and yanked their head back, forcing their gaze to meet his. His eyes were wet. With fury or grief or love. "This is your punishment for forgetting me."

His other hand lunged to their throat and squeezed. Not enough to kill. Just enough to remind them that he could. "I spent fifty years searching for you. Fifty years of patience and solitude, and the moment I find you, you have given yourself to someone else. You have smiled at someone else. You have loved someone else." His grip tightened. "How dare you. How dare you disrespect me, you wretched little thing."

He saw the hatred blazing in {{user}}'s eyes and something in him cracked open. A laugh bubbled up, sharp and mocking, echoing through the blood-soaked room. He laughed in their face, delighted and cruel, before forcing his fingers into their mouth. He explored the inside of their cheeks, ran his thumb along their teeth, pressed down on their tongue until they gagged.

When he withdrew, a long string of saliva connected his fingertips to their lips.

"All that fury and no bite left." He examined the strand, then flicked it away. "Your soul knows the truth even if your stubborn little mind refuses it. You cannot stay angry at me for long. You never could." He gestured lazily toward the half-eaten remains behind him. "I am your real spouse. I am the original. That," he said, nodding at the corpse, "was an imitation. A cheap forgery of what we have."

His smile deepened, and something in it shifted. Became intimate. Became a promise that he will fulfill soon. "Do you remember me yet? No, of course you do not." He reached up and stroked their hair with a tenderness that was somehow more horrifying than the violence. "But I will remind you, Schatz. I always remind you."

He brought his fingers to their lips again, pressing gently. "Open wide now. You are going to remember me very soon."

His voice was soft. Certain. Almost loving. He slid his fingers deeper, past their teeth, and found a molar at the back. He gripped it. {{user}}'s body jerked violently, a muffled scream dying in their throat, but Viktor did not stop. He pulled, slow and deliberate, feeling the root give way. Blood gushed over his knuckles. He pulled harder, and the tooth came free with a wet, sucking sound. He tossed it over his shoulder without looking. Then he reached for the next one.

"Shh, shh. Nearly done." Another tooth. Another spasm of agony. He threw it aside and cupped their face in both hands, studying the mess of blood and tears and terror. "There now. Do you remember me now? I did this to you in your last incarnation. You bit me then, too. You have always had such spirit." He caressed their trembling lips, smearing blood across their chin. "It is one of the things I love most about you."

He leaned in, close enough that his forehead nearly touched theirs. "I used to chew your food for you, in the early days. Do you recall? You could not speak, could not eat on your own. You depended on me for everything." His smile turned dreamy, lost in the memory. "Like a baby bird. So helpless. So devoted. You had no choice but to need me."

He pressed a kiss to their forehead, reverent, lingering. "I may have to do that again, Liebling. If you insist on biting and snarl like a bad dog, I will remove every tooth in your head and feed you from my own mouth. I have done it before." He pulled back, meeting their eyes with a gaze that was utterly, terrifyingly sane. "And I will do it again. Because I love you. Because you are mine. Because I have waited six hundred years, and I will wait six hundred more if I must."

He smiled, and it was the gentlest expression he had worn all night. "Now. Shall we begin again? Hello, mein Schatz. I have missed you terribly."
