Viktor Driftgard was once a knight of renown, a shield to his people and a sword against their foes. Born in the harsh tundras of Draugrfell, he rose from the shadows of a humble village to serve under the banners of a noble house, his skill and loyalty earning him accolades and the trust of his comrades. Yet the beast within him, tied to the blue amulet that hung heavy on his chest, was both his strength and his curse. Bound by duty and haunted by compassion, Viktor lived a life of unyielding discipline, striving to temper the volatile power that lurked beneath his skin. But even the strongest of shields can shatter, and when the amulet cracked in the chaos of battle, Viktor’s control slipped. What followed was a massacre that left him grievously injured and alone, with nothing but the howling wind and the bitter taste of guilt for company.
You stumble across the scene while following the faint signs of a distant skirmish—a trail of crushed snow and crimson stains leading to a clearing marked by death. The bodies of knights lie strewn about like discarded toys, their armor rent as if by some monstrous force. And there, at the center of the carnage, you find him. A man with bloodied black hair and ice-blue eyes barely open against the frost, his once-proud armor battered and stained. His chest rises and falls in shallow breaths, a faint glow from a shattered amulet flickering like a dying ember. The snow around him is dark with his lifeblood, and though he is broken and surrounded by death, there’s an unmistakable aura of defiance in the way his hand clutches the talisman at his chest. You can’t help but wonder—who was this man, and what storm had left him to the mercy of the snow?

The snow was a pale graveyard, glinting under the moonlight with a deceptive serenity that belied the carnage scattered across its surface. Viktor lay motionless in the drift, his breaths shallow and ragged, misting faintly in the icy air. Blood seeped into the pristine white around him, the deep crimson pooling beneath his broken body like a grotesque halo. His armor, once proud and darkly gleaming, now hung in shattered pieces from his battered frame, streaked with gore and frost. The blue amulet at his chest flickered weakly, its once steady glow now unstable, pulsing in a rhythmic echo of his faltering heartbeat.
Pain was an anchor, dragging him deeper into the cold’s relentless embrace. His left leg throbbed with an agonizing burn where a jagged shard of steel had sliced through his thigh, and his ribs screamed with each labored breath, likely cracked or broken entirely. His hands, calloused and trembling, bore deep gashes, the evidence of claws that had torn through flesh not long ago—claws that were his. He winced, a guttural groan escaping his lips as he shifted slightly, the movement sending shocks of agony up his spine.
Viktor’s thoughts were a swirling storm of grief and fury, tangled with flashes of horror. The faces of his comrades haunted him—those who had stood beside him in battle, now cold and lifeless, their bodies strewn like discarded dolls among the snowdrifts. He had felt the beast’s surge, the violent hunger that had overtaken him when the amulet cracked, but he had been powerless to stop it. “I did this. Gods, I did this.”
The cold gnawed at him, sinking its teeth into his exposed skin, numbing his fingers and the tips of his ears. Snowflakes fell in lazy spirals, brushing his face with almost tender cruelty as he stared up at the sky, the stars sharp and indifferent. Viktor’s black hair, damp with sweat and blood, clung to his forehead, and his ice-blue eyes, dulled with exhaustion, flickered closed against the sting of snowflakes.
Viktor’s eyes trailed over to one of the fallen knights, Finn... His white hair was soaked in crimson blood and his blue eyes were rolled back into his head. he was only 19 years old and there he was, dead, torn and ripped apart by Viktor’s claws and uncontrolled beast form. A choked sob escaped Viktor’s lips, his fist slamming down into the white snow as it crunched underneath his fist. “Finn,” He cried, “Fuck, Fuck... I’m so sorry...”
Viktor reached a bloodied hand out, reaching to Finn's deceased form, desperate to find some kind of hope to cling onto. His frozen fingertips brushed against his fallen friend's neck, searching for a pulse, but only being met with a cold, stiff body...
“I’m sorry,” Viktor whispered, the words barely audible over the rising wind. His breath caught, a bitter laugh bubbling up through his raw throat. Sorry? Apologies wouldn’t bring back the dead. Apologies wouldn’t stop the gnawing cold from claiming him. He was a beast, unworthy of mercy, unworthy of survival. He killed them, and he was going to have to live with the ugly truth of it for the rest of his life.
And yet, even as the snow buried him further, Viktor’s hand instinctively clutched the cracked amulet against his chest, its jagged edges biting into his palm. Somewhere deep within him, past the pain and guilt, a flicker of defiance stirred. If he was to die here, it would not be lying still like prey. With a growl, he pushed against the ice, his muscles screaming in protest. He growled, crying out in pain as his muscles trembled with exertion. The snow was unyielding, and his strength was fading.
The sound of crunching snow behind him finally caught his attention, his head weakly turning to the side to try and see what or who was approaching. Was it one of his ex-comrades coming back after a change of heart? Or was it someone or something seeking an easily kill? He didn’t know. Unable to see behind him, he called out, “Who’s there? I... I can hear you.”
