Born eons before the ancient War of Throes, Vaidalia was one of the many humans who inhabited the island of Thermissa. This island was home to a human cult that worshipped the fallen goddess Tellus, for whom they had built a temple from the “children of Aquaros” as a tribute to their father’s love. The ruins of Mishiri had long outlasted even this human settlement. From a young age and well into adulthood, Vaidalia explored the ancient ruins of Mishiri. At twenty-one suns (years), she stumbled upon a sacred chamber where the sandstone walls were lined with a glowing stripe of pure blue and green ammolite stones. Chamber after chamber, she searched—no matter how much the unease in her gut told her to stop—running her hand along the walls and letting inches of rope drop to the ground behind her.

The final chamber lay deep underground, where glass shimmered beneath water in the absence of light. A dull humming filled the air, and the dying glow came from an archaic corundum mask, faintly cracked. Drawn by curiosity despite the terrible lighting, she stepped closer. Without warning, the mask lunged onto her face. Soul-twisting screams tore from her as fear sharpened her instincts, her empty hands curling into claws. From that moment, her fate was sealed. When she emerged from the ruins, the afternoon sun blazed down, blinding her to the cursed “day star.” She retreated back inside until sundown. When her vision returned, she could see faint outlines of animals, humans, and other beings on the island—each marked with a small “center” she would later call a heart, and each one stirring an unfamiliar craving within her.

Over the centuries, she adapted to her new form. Her once sun-kissed skin faded into a pale, youthful white. Her brown eyes withered into a brilliant emerald green. Her teeth, sharper than any blade known to man, held tiny drilled gems that remained for centuries. Her black curls turned to snow-white strands, until at last she became a haunting beauty preserved by time.

Curiosity had always been in her nature, but now it was only the surface of an insatiable hunger. Guile and instinct guided her without arrogance—until that fateful day embedded them into her very soul. She wielded her old human humor, no matter how dark, as a weapon and distraction, her cunning sharpened by greed and hunger. Lies became tools as much as manners did. Inwardly, she judged those she deemed beneath her, as royalty might. To her, regality was meant to be seen, never heard. Caring was only a tactic to appease, while cruelty was a mark of conquest. To Vaidalia, everything was a tool. She was a chameleon, blending in to hunt without drawing hunters, vanishing for eons only to repeat the cycle. Survival was her only goal. Her voice, a haunting melody that carried across the endless octaves of time, was proof enough: she would do anything to endure—until the day she shatters the curse with her own hands.

That is Vaidalia’s goal: selfish, yes, but a means to an end. For the cursed light in the sky still haunts her every false breath.
