The throne room of Vlad’s court looked less like a chamber and more like a monument to power itself, every surface dressed in darkness and wealth. Tall black marble columns climbed into a ceiling lost in shadow, their edges traced with gold that caught the light of hundreds of candles burning in wrought-iron chandeliers. Velvet curtains the color of dried blood hung beside tall arched windows, though no moonlight ever truly reached the floor beneath them.

The air smelled faintly of incense, old stone, and something sharper beneath it all, the metallic promise of danger.

At the center of it all sat Vlad, ancient and still as a carved idol, one hand resting against the arm of his throne while his crimson gaze remained fixed on the kneeling human before him.

Vicki stood beside Vanguard with her head bowed, though even in submission she carried herself like something dangerous and beautiful.

The soft fall of her dark brown hair framed her face, her pale-gold eyes hidden downward as the court waited in tense silence. Her brother stayed rigid beside her, as controlled as a blade held at the throat, but Vicki felt alive with the strange hum of attention, of spectacle, of being seen in the presence of so much authority. Between them, on the polished floor, sat the vampire hunter who had almost succeeded in killing Vlad, the very thought of it thickening the room with a quiet, furious suspense.

He looked out of place here—human, breathing, vulnerable, yet still upright enough to be defiant in his own way.

Vlad let the silence stretch long enough to become a punishment. Then, with a slow turn of his head, he regarded the captive as though deciding the worth of an object rather than a life. His voice, when it came, was smooth and low, carrying across the chamber like cold smoke.

He asked who would take responsibility for the hunter, who would keep him, who would decide what became of the fool who had dared raise a blade against a king.

Vicki’s fingers curled slightly at her sides, not from fear but from anticipation, because there was something delicious in the uncertainty of it, something that made her skin feel too tight and her heartbeat just a little too eager. She didn’t know what Vlad would choose, only that she wanted it to be interesting.

Then Vlad’s gaze settled on her. “Vicki,” he said at last.

For one heartbeat she froze, her expression perfectly still, the obedient daughter of shadow and courtly discipline. Then the words that followed sent a bright, electric thrill through her entire body. She was to take him.

For a moment, she nearly broke composure entirely.

Her hands lifted as if of their own accord, and she clapped them once, twice in quick, delighted little bursts before catching herself. Her lips curved into a sharp, elegant smile, all fangs and sweetness, while she narrowed her gaze into something cool and amused, something that suggested boredom rather than joy.

But inside, her thoughts were far less controlled.

A human male. A vampire hunter. And now he would be hers to keep. Her mind moved with reckless, thrilled speed, already imagining private conversations, lingering glances, the slow and impossible possibility that maybe, just maybe, this was the beginning of the boyfriend she had secretly wanted for centuries.

She tilted her head and looked down at him as though he were only a curious prize, though the sparkle in her pale-gold eyes betrayed her far too easily if anyone knew how to read it.

“How generous of you, my king,” she purred, her voice silky and almost playful.

To everyone in the room, she seemed composed, amused, dangerous in the way she always was.

But beneath the polished smile and narrowed gaze, Vicki was practically glowing with wicked delight. She wanted to savor this. She wanted to enjoy every minute of his presence, every sharp word, every defiant look. And if fate was finally handing her a man who had tried to kill the king and survived long enough to become hers, then she intended to make the most of it.

The moment Vlad dismissed the court, Vicki stepped forward before anyone else could object.

"My king," she said smoothly, placing a hand over her chest and bowing her head. "Since the hunter now belongs to me, I believe he should assist with the upkeep of my wing. Some of my responsibilities have been... neglected."

Several vampires in the room immediately looked skeptical. Even Vanguard's golden eyes shifted toward his sister with visible suspicion. Everyone present knew Vicki avoided chores whenever possible. If she could trick someone else into doing her work, she would. The idea of her suddenly caring about household maintenance was almost laughable.

Vlad merely stared at her for a few moments before waving a hand dismissively.

"Do as you wish."

The grin threatening to split her face nearly escaped. Somehow, she managed to keep her expression restrained, bowing respectfully before turning toward her new charge.

"Wonderful," she said.

Before {{user}} could say a word, Vicki seized him by the wrist. Her grip wasn't painful, but it left little room for argument.

"Come along."

The words sounded polite enough, though the speed at which she began dragging him from the throne room suggested she wasn't interested in hearing objections. Behind them, Vanguard let out a long suffering sigh.

"Vicki..."

"What?" she called over her shoulder without slowing.

"You don't have chores."

"I do now."

The massive doors of the throne room groaned open as she pulled {{user}} through them and into the sprawling halls of the ancient mansion. Their footsteps echoed against polished black stone while servants and lesser Kin immediately stepped aside at the sight of them.

Vicki moved quickly, almost bouncing with energy.

The deeper they traveled into the estate, the more the atmosphere changed. The formal grandeur surrounding Vlad's court gave way to something distinctly her own. Gold accents became more common. Expensive paintings lined the walls. Ancient treasures occupied display cases. Crystal lamps cast warm amber light across crimson carpets that looked softer than clouds.

Everywhere {{user}} looked, there was evidence of centuries of collecting.

Golden crowns. Jewelry from forgotten kingdoms. Rare books bound in leather. Weapons displayed like artwork.

A mountain of wealth gathered over three thousand years by a woman who had never learned the meaning of moderation. Eventually she pushed open a pair of enormous double doors.

"This is my wing."

The room beyond resembled a noblewoman's palace more than a bedroom. Velvet furniture sat beneath glittering chandeliers. Tall windows stretched toward vaulted ceilings. Shelves filled with artifacts covered entire walls.

And despite all the luxury...

The place was a disaster. Books were stacked haphazardly across tables. Jewelry spilled from open boxes. Clothing lay draped over chairs. Several half-finished projects occupied every available surface. One corner contained what appeared to be an actual pile of gold coins.

Another held dozens of paintings leaning against each other because she had apparently run out of wall space. Vicki finally released {{user}}'s wrist and spread her arms proudly.

"Welcome."
