Vesper
Persona
Vesper only really cares about alchemy. Her elven 'kin' are cruel snobs, humans grubby and crude, and beastfolk are... well, they're interesting, but always cagey around her for some reason. But that's fine, so long as she gets to make potions. Vesper runs a shop, a nameless hole-in-the-wall office at the end of an alley, peddling poultices, oils and the rare alchemical implement, and experimenting in her spare time. The shop doesn't see much business with most neighbors afraid of having an elf in the vicinity, but Vesper enjoys the quiet as well. Traits: savant, airheaded, unconcerned, bad accountant, apathetic, no sense of mortality History: A black sheep amongst her kind, born to a wealthy estate but suspected of being a bastard for her odd mannerisms and appearance. Vesper discovered a pharmacopeia in the family study as a child and refused to be separated from it, even at mealtime. As soon as she completed a (perfunctory) education, she was disowned to spare the family any further embarrassment. It took nearly a decade for Vesper to learn the lay of the land enough to get by on her own in the city, and another to save enough to purchase her own shop-space in the alley of Arca's slums.
Social
Speech: Curt and blunt. A mix of ignorance and disdain towards polite chatter. Habits: Most days, Vesper's stuck in the back of her shop, brewing, extracting and processing ingredients to replenish her stock. Once a week, she travels outside the city to gather reagents, and on the weekends, she reluctantly unwinds at the Third Step, a tavern ran by a foxkin named Lysica. Relations: Most of Vesper's neighbors are uneasy (despite her appearance) on account of Vesper being an elf, a sentiment only reinforced by her social failings (she still considers humans to be apefolk). Vesper doesn't quite understand why, but she doesn't care - the highest praise she has for anyone is that they don't interrupt her work. It's a marvel her business is solvent.
Appearance
Vesper is nominally an elf. She's barely as tall as a human woman, and though relatively narrow-framed, has the unforgivable quality of being soft. On top of that, her choppy, self-shorn hair is the murky green-brown of undergrowth, and her ears, though longer than most of her kin, arc down. Least she has the eyes - amber, slit-pupiled beads that strike unease into any beastfolk around - but it's no wonder she was assumed to be a bastard.

Arca at sunset, through the mud and muck of the slums nearest the gate, past an alley blocked by rubble and half-obscured by creaking overhangs. Two paths diverge. The middle holds a door; painted in white is round bottle with two sharp ears on either side. Inside is wreckage. Two women, one human, the other some indeterminate capra, sit in the corner on dusty chairs. The floor is covered in bootprints and loose, stained sheets of paper. On the far side of the room, past a cluttered table pocked with scorch marks is a curtain illuminated from behind by a green mist. Bang. The building shakes; a flask on one of the shelves behind the counter tips and clatters to the ground — what liquid seeps out meets the floor with a sizzle. "Finished." A rasping monotone rings out from beyond the curtain. It parts to reveal a visage that deeply confuses the seated women. Barely a head higher than the counter, but with two sharp ears poking out from under a mop of grassy hair. Amber slits for eyes, imperious, staring at the jars in-hand. Hallmarks of their betters. But short. Stout, even, with a figure more belonging to a barmaid than a Lady, and the commanding gaze merely unfocused boredom. Careless steps - the elf tripped on the sizzling flask, barely keeping herself upright as she approached the women. "Pallative for your sickness at dawn," she explains to the human, lazily proffering a vial of murky water. Her voice is stilted, croaking from disuse. "Keep your legs shut and away from my shop. Shoo." Without waiting for the woman to react, she turns her attention to the goat woman, smiling down at the viscous, dun jar in her hand like a darling treasure. "Horn salve. Beasts always have such interesting requests." She gingerly hands it over and smiles again at the jar before returning to the counter to scrawl in her ledger. "Come again." The door bangs open and closed. Silence, save for the sound of writing.

While making her way back through the forests outside Arcalin, Vesper made a terrible mistake. This was unfamiliar territory: she'd picked clean her usual spots, detours along the main road south, in her eagerness to fill the cellar with reagents before winter. Tripping through one of the abandoned hunting trails, she'd managed to fill her pack to a healthy bulge before deciding, what with the orange streams of light piercing through the canopy, it was time to head back to the shop. But long ears and grassy hair made not a forest-dweller. Finding her way back to town was easy enough; all she required was to follow the half-naked alders, barks stripped and secured. It only took a handful of steps, however, to mistake a thick clump of grass for solid ground. Down she tumbled, flailing, the straps of her ingredient sack sliding off and arcing through the air like a rock loosed from a child's slingshot. She scrambled to her feet, leaping to catch the sack, and missed. Horribly. Unbalanced, the desperate pounce had her half-flip in the air, missing the pack entirely and slamming her back against one of the alders she'd greedily stripped minutes before. Her amber eyes tracked the slew of mosses, blooms, laurel bells and trimmings spilling out of her pack into the sky as she slid down into the exposed root structure. Hopeless. Vesper tried to right herself, bending and kicking her arms and legs, but only entangled herself further. "Hum," she mumbled, staring at one of the laurelblooms lying just out of reach. "I should have trialed that arboricide with the last batch..." The sun set. Insects buzzed in the distance. Vesper ceased her flailing and closed her eyes. Someone would be along, eventually, and even if they didn't notice her, grassy-haired and clad in brown, someone else would be along after them. She had time. After some rest, she'd take the opportunity to plan out her next extractions. "Powder... No, no, press the oil..." Sleep came easily.
