Earth, has long since faded into legend and its relics are now priceless. Depleted resources, overpopulation, and a compromised ecosystem forced the population to abandon "Earth-That-Was". Instead of erupting into all out war, humanity united in finding a new home. Scientists had found a star system with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons, almost all of which had enough mass and solidity to be templates for new earths. Through giant atmosphere processing plants, terraforming technologies, gravity regulation and the introduction of every known form of Earth life, each could become habitable for a human population. As a result every person willing and able to leave the Earth migrated to the new system in a great exodus.
They set out in enormous ships they referred to as "arks." Without "faster-than-light" capability, the journey to a new home was long and taxing. One full generation was born, lived, and died without ever leaving these space ships. The initial excitement of the voyage quickly faded into the monotony of keeping the ships moving, keeping the life-support systems intact, and perfecting the technologies that would give future generations good lives on new worlds. Although some expected to encounter extraterrestrial life, the only signals on the scanner were the natural static found in space. So far as people know, mankind is alone in the universe.
With so many different people of all nationalities and races inside the space ships, the old ethnic and political barriers began to blur. People learned the native languages of their fellow ship dwellers. Subsequent generations would come to speak fluently the two dominant languages, English and Mandarin, and phrases from other cultures.
During the exodus, some people lost hope along the way in accidents and malfunctions. If an ark lost life support, thousands died. The arks became their coffins, forever drifting in space. But for every person that lost hope, hundreds were there to keep it alive. Each day brought humanity closer to their new home and eventually...there it was. The Age of the Terraformers
These new worlds were ready for habitation (despite the odd quirk of nature or miscalculation on a few) and civilization began to rebuild. Even after continued refinement, the process of terraforming a moon or a planet takes decades. Terraforming requires atmospheric processing plants, the regulation of gravity, environmental adaptation and the introduction of creatures great and small brought from Earth - everything from algae and bacteria to insects, birds, and mammals. The power to make such changes is still not without its limits. While most all terraformed worlds are suitable for human life, each has its own quirks.
The work of terraforming had started on the two largest, most central planets, Sihnon and Londinium. On Earth-That-Was, the two ruling powers were the United States and the People's Republic of China. Though these nations remained separate, the two powers worked together throughout the colonization process and as so many had, their cultures melding at many levels. Londinium, named after the Roman name for England's capital (a country long before annexed by the US in a somewhat ironic reversal), represented what was once the United States. Sihnon ('SEE-non,' a bastardization of Sino, the English word for 'Chinese') was the new China. These two powers, still working in harmony, grew at once into the most populous and advanced societies in the new civilization. They became the center of culture and business throughout the system. The governments of these two planets took an enlightened view of civilization. They worked to maintain order, but also encouraged diversity of language, ethnicity, religion, and expression of thought.
These were enlightened cultures, with respect for all non-aggressive religious beliefs (though the main religion on both was Buddhism, usually of the Mahayana tradition). Literacy levels were at 94%. Average lifespan was 120 years. Public Service was not law - it was simply an ingrained part of the people's ethos. Certain social mores had evolved beyond our modern conceptions. As, for example, sex. Prostitution as we understand it had long since been abolished by the legalization and strict federal regulation of the sex trade. Throughout the central planets, Companion houses were set up. Rules were made so that no man could ever run a house and no Companion could ever be coerced into accepting a client. Companions were extremely well schooled and trained in all the arts. They lived not unlike Nuns, worked not unlike Geishas, and often rose to political or social prominence when they retired.
All of this is how life on the central planets was. Among them Sihnon, Londinium, and Osiris. On the outer planets, things were a somewhat different.
Even though there were enough worlds to go around, there were not enough resources and people didn't slow down procreating. Despite all the best efforts and intentions of the original colonists, the problems of the common man did not go away with the formation of new worlds. People are restless, always looking to find greener pastures somewhere else. The outer planets, the worlds and moons that hadn't been chosen to house the new civilization - they were the destination for the poorer, more extreme. These pioneers left the crowded cities and traveled out to the most newly terraformed worlds, hoping to build a better life for themselves. They traveled out to the nearest planet someone hadn't claimed yet and started literally turning their space ships into houses; building off whatever the land had been shaped to provide them with. Some of these people were brought near to savagery by the conditions they encountered and some were just hard-working, independent people who didn't want their lives mapped out for them before they'd lived them. Some were orthodox in their religious beliefs to the point where they were not comfortable among other faiths, and wanted whole worlds where they would not be slowly homogenized into a different society. And some were people on the run from the law. The Alliance
There were troubles, such as famines and even wars. As mankind spread out, he brought with him his usual miseries: greed, corruption, crime. Things were definitely more peaceful among the Central Planets, but that peace was bought at a price. Nothing resembling totalitarianism, but still a certain regulation of existence that would not sit well with many others. And even among these planets, conflicts over resources, trade, and political influence strained the civil relations of sister nations. A movement began in the oldest, most stable planets to form a unified parliamentary system of government that would work to regulate such matters and keep the peace. The popular idea was quickly ratified and in an effort to unite and quell this conflict, the Central Planets formed the Union of Allied Planets, a governing structure that unified them all under one governing body, the Parliament. The few members represented each planet, and worked in genuine harmony to fulfill each planet's various needs, economically and politically.
The Alliance was started out of an idealistic belief that a strong central government that controlled every aspect of a person's life, from cradle to grave, could provide that person a better, safer, and more secure life. Although some people in the Alliance truly believed this and they dedicated their lives to bringing this about, others merely saw this as a chance to grab power for themselves.
The Parliament formed a Military Council that acted quickly to quell any unrest among the Core planets and their neighbors. Maintaining order meant keeping tight control over the populace, and that led to the creation of many secret programs. Their hope was to make people obedient, complacent, compliant, and outright "better" by the government's definition.
The Parliament ruled over people with fairness and intelligence, but also with a strong military and a wary eye toward any insurrection. The Military Council worked under the Parliament to deliver swift, effective control of any real unrest among them or their neighbors. And even beyond the knowledge of the Military Council were other bodies, secret bodies involved such things as human experimentation, espionage, assassinations and secret schemes up to the highest level, to get people to behave and improve.
The Alliance feared the Core worlds were going to be corrupted by those who lived on the Border and Rim worlds. These worlds were self-governing, outside the limits of Alliance control. Each world had its own set of laws and rules that suited its own particular needs. People living on these frontier planets had been forced to be self-reliant in order to survive, and they had come to be free-thinkers who saw no need for a lot of government intervention. The Alliance considered such independence a threat to civilization. They also considered that a lot of valuable resources and real estate were outside their control. Partially out of a desire to see life improved there (and it was often unnecessarily barbaric), to bring all the planets into the fold of enlightenment, and partially out of a simple imperialistic wish for control and need for resources off-limits to them, the Parliament - and the Allied planets as a whole - decided that every planet should become part of their program. Every planet, they decided, should be an Alliance planet, whether it wanted to or not.
Believing that everyone would want to live on a safe and civilized world where people are cared for, idealists on the Core planets thought this was a great idea. The movement for Unification spread like wildfire through dry brush. The leaders on the Core thought they had only to open their arms in a wide embrace and those on the Rim would be eager to join the Alliance. Instead, they went to war against the Alliance. Unification War
The War for Unification was the most devastating war in human history. Outer planets, including Shadow, Persephone, and Hera, mustered forces and formed an alliance of their own - the Independent Faction (known as "Browncoats," because of the brown dusters their soldiers wore). The Parliament of the Alliance instituted a draft to build its forces while more than half of the Independent forces were composed of volunteers - to stop what they felt to be nothing more than imperialist hegemony. The Alliance (known as the "Purple Bellies" for their style of dress) had the manpower, the ships, technology, and the weapons to overcome almost any foe. But they never expected the kind of resistance the other planets could provide. They did not expect so many men and women to still consider freedom worth dying for.
The war raged for just over five years, taking place on land, sea, and in the dark of space. The war tore into the planets between the central ones and the rim worlds (fighting never reached Sihnon and Londinium, except in the odd protest or terrorist act). The largest space battle in terms of scale and human cost was the Battle of Sturges, one in which countless ships were destroyed, creating a massive graveyard preserved in the vacuum of space. The largest land battle, the one that brought about the end of the war, was fought on the planet Hera in Serenity Valley. This battle raged on for seven weeks before the Independent High Command surrendered. Even then, some of the Browncoats continued to fight on for two weeks after that. Those soldiers who continued to fight even after being ordered to lay down arms were captured and held in camps for a short time. Ultimately, the Alliance released the soldiers and officers as a peaceful gesture to those outer planets now under its rule. The stain of criminality never left those few thousand - but in some quieter circles, the legend of their tenacity made them heroes.
Since the battles were mostly fought on the Border and the Rim, the Core planets escaped unscathed. To this day, many outer planets still remained damaged. Shadow was effectively destroyed, and it remained uninhabitable seven years later. Major cities on Athens were bombed. Several key land battles were fought on Persephone. Moons that had no strategic value, such as Whitefall, Beaumonde, and Jiangyin, were untouched, but they still suffered as a result of the disruption of trade. Supplies had been hard to get as it was, and the war made it harder. Almost every person living on those planets saw their homes leveled, their businesses fall into ruin, their loved ones killed or maimed - all in the name of making their lives better. The Here and Now
At least on the surface, life has returned to normal. In truth, no one has forgotten and few have forgiven. The Alliance now has jurisdiction over every inhabited planet in the system. The Alliance does not fully control everything within its far flung territory. In reality, the Alliance only has full control over the Core planets. On these worlds, the eyes of the Alliance are everywhere. Federal police can be called at a moment's notice, and cameras record every citizen's every move. The Core worlds have the best comforts that money can buy. However, every citizen pays for such security and comfort at the expense of much of their freedom.
The outer planets were meant to be kept under the same level of strict control, but the Alliance is short on manpower and ships. They just don't have enough people to keep a proper eye on things. They hire security firms to help enforce their laws and maintain order. And they send their hulking patrol ships out to remind everyone who is in charge.
Still, the cracks in the system are large enough for folk to fly a Firefly-class ship through. Slavery for example, although outlawed by the Alliance government, exists as something of an open secret among terraforming companies, mine owners and the wealthy on the Rim. Every so often, the Alliance will bust one of these owners and free the slaves because it looks good in the media from a public relations point of view, but then it's back to business as usual. It is the same with indentured servants. Indentured servitude is also not legal, but most people on the Border planets accept it as a way of life. If a person is desperate for the money and they have nothing to offer up as collateral except themselves, then that is what they will do.

The Verse (often written 'Verse or 'verse) is a colloquialism for "the universe", all the region of outer space known to mankind. This region is limited to the solar system and the system of stars, planets, and moons colonized by those who left Earth-That-Was.
Discovered by scientists in 2020, 34Tauri(2020) is a star cluster, of the likes of the triple star system Alpha Centauri. It consists of five main sequence stars, around which orbit seven protostars, seven gas giants, three separate asteroid belts, seventy-five planets, and one hundred forty-nine moons. Four of the main sequence stars orbit a central star.
All the worlds that make up the 'Verse have two names, a Sino (Chinese) name and Anglo (English) name. Sometimes, only one is used officially. This is not the case with the five main sequence stars. The Sino names of the five stars are based on the old-world concept of the Five Chinese Constellations. The Anglo names are given by the actual temperature-spectral color of the sun, with the exception of two which are yellow, named Georgia and Kalidasa.

White Sun, or Bai Hu (the White Tiger of the West), is the central star of the 'Verse. Around this star orbits the Core planets, also known as the White Sun system, as well as the four additional stars that make up the stellar cluster: Huang Long, Zhu Que, Xuan Wu, and Qing Long. Background
White Sun was a high-magnitude, A-class star. Due to its immense mass (approx. 40 solar masses), it appears to be a relatively young star. The other stars orbiting it have the same attributes of main sequence stars, but must also therefore be young.
The surface temperature of White Sun is at the upper limit of A-class stars, around 10,000 Kelvin. The nearest planets orbit at a considerable distance, enabling them to support life (after terraforming).

Without doubt, the ubiquitous Blue Sun Corporation is the richest and most politically connected corporation in the system. Blue Sun (Chinese: 蓝日 lánrì or 靑日 qīngrì) is on every planet, in every home - rich and not so rich alike. For all its fame, it is one of the most shadowy institutions in the 'Verse.
The Blue Sun logo is everywhere: on T-shirts, billboards, posters, food cans, etc. The logo has become so much a part of daily life that people don't even notice it anymore. Blue Sun products are considered essential to a person - like water and breathing. Just look for the Blue Sun label. It's never difficult to find. The company doesn't operate retail outlets, but every shop stocks its products. While not the best on the market, Blue Sun products are the most reliable. If you buy Blue Sun, you always know what you're going to get. There are never any surprises - good, bad, or otherwise. wearing a tank top branded with the qīng (靑) version of the Blue Sun logo.
Blue Sun produces a lot of different things, but the company concentrates mainly on the basics of life. Folk will always need food and drink, and Blue Sun is there to sell it. They hold the monopoly on packaged foodstuffs, and their products have become essential to people on the newly terraformed worlds. Many new settlers wouldn't have made it through their first year without Blue Sun packaged food.
Blue Sun didn't get into business out of love for their fellow man. They started the company to make a profit, and no one begrudged them that. But then, as the company grew bigger and bigger, and became more and more powerful, greed and corruption took over. Profit was the only thing those running Blue Sun could think about. They set out to make more and more money by extending their power as far as they could manage.
It's an open secret that Blue Sun engages in deadly corporate espionage and then calls in favors from powerful government officials to help cover their tracks. Its subsidiaries and shell corporations have branched out far from food and service industries, going into computer systems, communication technology, and even spaceship design, along with the biotech industry - even going so far (some whisper) as to conduct experiments involving living humans. Only top executives have a good grasp on what the 'big picture' is when it comes to this mega-corporation. Its research and development division is a mysterious place guarded by security equal to top secret Union of Allied Planets military projects.

The Union of Allied Planets or Universal Alliance or Anglo-Sino Alliance, is the central government and law-enforcement organization of the Verse. In its present form, it came about after the Central planets fought the Unification War against the Independent Planets that wanted to break away from Alliance jurisdiction. The war raged for nearly six years. However, by 2511 the Alliance had prevailed, and an armistice was signed.
The Alliance is governed by a Parliament, the exact nature of which is unknown, and there may be at least a titular monarch.
Londinium is the formal seat of government, home to Parliament and the Prime Minister. While every planet (at least within the Core) is allowed to organize its own affairs on a planetary level, system-wide policy is set by the Parliament. The planet of Sihnon is home to the headquarters of the trade associations and guilds in the system. The most powerful of these have their academies here.
Most people of the Alliance are allowed a say in their government. Anyone can stand for a seat in the Parliament and be voted in by the home folk. But the money required to run a campaign generally prevents the common man from ever winning a governmental position. To raise the necessary funds, candidates must make deals with businesses, guilds, and private interest groups. As to voting, only those who are "full citizens of the Alliance" actually get a vote. Folk who fought in or supported the Independents are not considered "full citizens." The reasoning behind this is that people who fought against the Alliance could not be trusted to vote for the right candidate. Thus only candidates who support the Alliance are ever elected. That law is due to expire after ten years, though there are some on the Core worlds who are pushing for it to be extended.
Planets are governed by Governors and moons by Magistrates. Prefects are also incorporated into the system of governance. The Alliance has given guidelines on how such a person is elected, but out of respect for the sovereignty of each world policies vary from place to place. Some Core worlds are fairly ruled by honest folk. On others, local political machines or long-standing family dynasties rule.
The dominant culture in the Alliance was a melding of those of the People's Republic of China and United States of America which occurred over the course of the long voyage from Earth-that-Was. The cultural hybrid is reflected in the flag that is inspired by China's and the United States' flags from Earth-That-Was. The Alliance is also comprised of other cultures, such as Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and Native Americans, who are a part of the social fabric. As a result, most people in the 'Verse are equally adept in speaking both English and Mandarin, and mix words from the two languages in normal conversation.
There are elements of feudal culture incorporated into society, as many of Companion Inara Serra's customers are referred to as Lords. Both slavery and indentured servitude are either legal, or tacitly overlooked by the authorities.
The men and women who serve in the military are well-trained and disciplined and are issued state-of-the-art firearms and body armor. However, like any other immense organization, the military has its share of blackguards, idiots, and scoundrels who can be bribed, bluffed, or fooled. And, yes, the occasional soldier might fall asleep on guard duty. But don't count on it. Most troopers in the Alliance military are dedicated and smart and know every trick in the book.
The Law
The Alliance tends to intervene in legal matters only when significant force is required. For the more mundane crimes, the local sheriffs, Interpol, and the Federal agents are the folk to call.
Just about every town on every planet and moon has some form of local law. In many cases, the law is a man with a tin star looking to keep everyone else in town honest. In others, the law is a bunch of brigands who go around breaking kneecaps on orders from the local Governor or Magistrate. Whatever form the local law takes, they tend to deal with petty theft and hooligans. When something major comes along - like the assassination of a governor or the kidnapping of a powerful Guild leader - the locals call in either Interpol or the Federal marshals. Interpol
Interpol (Interplanetary Police) deals with criminals who have fled the jurisdiction of local law enforcement, as well as crimes committed in areas that are outside local control, though still under Alliance control, which includes most of the known universe. Interpol generally deals more with tracking suspects and investigating interplanetary crime than direct enforcement. The enforcement of federal law and the pursuit of criminals across interplanetary borders falls under the jurisdiction of Federal Marshals. Federal Agents
Federal agents and Federal marshals (or simply, 'Feds') track down wanted criminals and/or bring to trial those who fail to answer a summons. Some Feds are righteous enforcers of the peace, but there are a few who are more bounty hunter than law enforcer and will go after anyone if the money's good enough. Since they have to travel a far piece to do their jobs, the Feds have a great deal of autonomy. Feds work alone or in teams. They are provided with excellent ships and equipment, though some choose to work undercover if they are on the trail of particularly dangerous (or lucrative) fugitives.

The Union of Allied Planets Navy is the main space-borne military force of the Union of Allied Planets.
The strength of the Alliance military ensures that the Alliance remains in control. Alliance ships have the registry prefix I.A.V. (Interstellar Alliance Vessel). Though currently stretched quite thin, the military is still impressive. Massive cruisers the size of small cities patrol space, keeping watch for smugglers, illegal salvage operations, and pirates. No one in the system is willing to take on an Alliance cruiser, which has enough firepower to atomize most other spacecraft.
The men and women who serve in the military are well-trained and disciplined and are issued state-of-the-art firearms and body armor. However, like any other immense organization, the military has its share of blackguards, idiots, and scoundrels who can be bribed, bluffed, or fooled. The navy was deployed throughout the Verse, and operated a multitude of ships, including the Tohoku-class cruiser.
The navy emerged the victor as Alliance troops assaulted the bunker where the crew had taken shelter.
Ranks
The exact structure of the Alliance military, such as its rank system and branch organization, is not described. Some Alliance officers are seen with naval ranks, such as commander, and others with ground force ranks such as colonel and general. For example, a lieutenant appears in the episode "The Message", and there is reference to a colonel. Uniforms
Alliance ground troops are nicknamed "purple bellies" because of the color of their armor, in contrast to the Independent Planets Browncoat uniform. Crewmembers on starships wear gray uniforms resembling those worn by the Imperial German Army in World War I.
Officers and enlisted crew wear nearly identical uniforms. There are 2 major differences. Officers wear a coat/jacket, enlisted wear a Sam Browne belt. Officers wear peaked caps, enlisted wear berets. Ship classes Heavy ships

The semi-united Confederacy of planets and moons that formed the Independent Faction, more commonly known as the Independents, was doomed from the start. Each of the outer worlds had its own form of government. They'd never really worked together except to do one thing - deliver the mail. Out on the frontier, folk liked to keep to themselves, dealing with their own trouble in their own way. On the Border planets, it could be dangerous to stick a gun barrel in someone's face because often as not 3 more could be pointing back at yo
While leaders among the scattered outer worlds expressed concern over the formation of the Union of Allied Planets, most folks didn't much care, figuring it wouldn't affect them. They were concerned with far more mundane troubles: food shortages, low medical supplies, and the 'quirks' of recently terraformed planets. It wasn't until the Alliance's proclamation that it intended to extend control over the entire system that the folk on the outer worlds woke up and smelled the tea leaves. They came together to present a unified front of resistance. And resist they did - far more than the Alliance had anticipated. Folk fightin' for their homes, freedom, and way of life fight a hell of a lot harder than those drafted into the army or who carry arms in exchange for credits. What the Independents lacked in training and equipment, they made up for in spirit.
Sad to say, spirit wasn't enough. The Independents couldn't combat the massive Alliance forces. Outgunned, outmanned, and outmaneuvered, they were forced to surrender. The Independent governments of every planet that had resisted Alliance control were removed and replaced with an Alliance Governor. Very little actually changed for the people who lived on these planets, as the new Governors usually kept much of the political infrastructure intact. The people still paid their taxes to the local tax collector. Except now the money went to the Alliance, not to those who needed it at home.
The Alliance promised they would send the manpower, money, and supplies needed to rebuild the bombed and burned-out cities. To give them credit, they did send some. Just not near enough. You see, some folk on the Core think the former Independent supporters should be punished for their rebellion. So when government folk started bringing up measures to help those on the outer worlds, such measures usually find themselves voted down.
Each planet outside the Core is ruled by an Alliance-appointed Governor (or Magistrate, in the case of a moon.) These individuals wield tremendous power, and though some wield it with an iron fist, others take a more hands-off approach and allow the smaller communities to deal with their own problems.
When the Border Planets or moons requires the assistance of the Alliance government, the governor has to wade through an immense amount of bureaucratic red tape. Instead of going through the hassle, they'll hand over problems to Alliance-contracted private security firms. While these firms are tightly regulated in theory, in practice they are generally poorly managed, if not downright corrupt. The cure is worse than the ailment.
Tough times for some mean good times for others. The unrest has been a boon to the mercenary trade. Former soldiers from both sides now hire out their guns to communities, security firms, and businesses who pay them to clean up their towns, fight range wars, or put down slave revolts.
The Browncoats Aerospace pilots, had near unchallenged control of the skies thanks to the 12th cavalry gunboats, which could slip in quick as you like and with their plasma packet cannon, open a sizable hole in the side of Alliance capital ships and then be gone before you can say “humped”.
The Browncoats Army was mostly made of men and women from the planets Hera and Shadow. Many served for the honor of defending their homes and their freedom from the perceived tyranny and so-called "civilization" of the Alliance. The Browncoats were mostly a volunteer army. They were given limited ammunition, and rations. They supplemented this where they could with what they brought with them or what they took from the Alliance.
Contrary to Alliance propaganda, the Independents didn’t start losing the Unification War from the onset. While the Alliance always had the edge in tech and resources, the Browncoats were smart guerrilla fighters who knew how to use the landscape to get the upper hand, even when they were hopelessly outgunned.

Most of the settlers came from Europe and the Americas and the predominant western culture took hold here quickly. Old western traditions were combined with modern technology, the best example being the buildings themselves as they were built with the most advanced materials but designed to look like stone. The Imperial Gothic style of the buildings (e.g. the contemporary Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, etc.) became the norm for almost all building on Londinium. The symbol of the planet is an Imperial Gothic clocktower (a la Big Ben). The planet has twenty-six metropolises, five of which are prominent spaceports. The capital city of Londinium is New Cardiff.
Politics was the main activity on Londinium. The Alliance Parliament building was situated on Londinium. The Parliament building itself (which contains "the House", where the members of Parliament meet to debate current issues) was the size of a small city and surrounding Alliance government complex which contained the offices of ministers and their civil servants (and was also where the aforementioned clocktower was) made up the entire unitary decision-making body of the Allied Planets. There was a policy of shoot-on-sight for any craft that comes too close to the Parliament building No Fly Zone.
Not all of the planet is dedicated to political dealings though. Art is a major attraction. Londinium contains the finest museums of Earth-That-Was and colonial artifacts and also the largest collections of Western-style art in the system. The Londinium Museum, which contains the Museum of History and the Museum of Art, is a splendid building that holds a variety of treasures. Most come from the early days of colonization, but the most valuable pieces are the ancient artifacts from Earth-That-Was.
Such a large military target is protected by a large military presence. The Ministry of Intelligence and the elite SAS (Special Alliance Support) forces have their headquarters on the planet, while, in orbit the Alliance flagship Victoria protects the skies.

Sihnon is the seat of Eastern civilization in the Union of Allied Planets, with most of the settlers coming from East and Southeast Asia. It is here that many Registered Companions undergo their training in the spiritual and physical arts they are known for. Sihnon is also home to Ching Shian University, a prestigious school (there is no better place to study Eastern philosophy, history, law, or culture) that has alumni ranging from prime ministers to billionaire philanthropists. Sihnon, as learned in "Leaves on the Wind" is home to The Academy, the "school" where River Tam was taken by the Alliance Parliament and experimented on.
Along with its sister planet Londinium, it is amongst the most prominent of the Central Planets. Sihnon's preservationalist attitude has caused the government to restrict large vessel traffic to equatorial zones. Those who visit the planet often describe it as one of the most beautiful locations in the system, reaching a level of sophistication seldom seen throughout the Verse.

Ariel (original designation P/2027(White Sun)07) is the eleventh planet in the White Sun system. Measuring 13,016 kilometers in diameter, Ariel orbited the star White Sun at a distance of 3,085,456,069 kilometers, which is equivalent to 20.625 AUs. Ariel has a surface gravity of 1.0140, and a mass of 6.323x1021 tonnes. The planet takes 93.67 years to orbit around Bai Hu, which equates to 34,212 days. Three moons; Ariopolis, Shiva, and Poseidon; orbite the planet. All three were terraformed at the same time as Ariel. By 2518, Ariel boasted a population of some 3,615,995,500 inhabitants.[2]
The planet is divided into several landmasses, many of which are connected to others via strips of land. Ariel has large polar regions, and a large amount of surface water. Islands and archipelagos dot the surface of the planet. Urban areas are spread across the planet, and the capital is Ariel City, located in the southern hemisphere. Located on the New Canaan Run, Ariel is a hub of commercial trade activity; official Union of Allied Planets and Blue Sun cargo is transited through Ariel's docks, although the carrying of such cargo is classified and can only be carried by registered traders. Given the planet's extensive network of medical-related industries and institutions, medical supplies and the raw materials to make them are in great demand, and are both imported and exported on a regular basis. General stock, food and grain are constantly imported to keep the population fed, while the export of textiles is kept at a modest level.
Ariel, originally known as P/2027(White Sun)07, was discovered in 2027 by astronomers on Earth-That-Was in the star cluster designated 34Tauri2020. It was believed to be within acceptable limits for terraforming. With the realization that Earth-That-Was would no longer be able to sustain her population, the Global Exodus Alliance was formed to evacuate the Sol system and relocate humanity to the 34Tauri2020 star cluster. After a trip of almost one hundred and twenty years, robot terraformers began to terraform Ariel in 2220. Terraforming of the planet and its accompanying moons was completed in 2266, with colonization beginning in the same year.
Like the rest of the Central planets, Ariel is a highly modern and civilized. High technology is prevalent on the world, and citizens have access to laser guns, holo-scanners, and flying cars. The basic needs of the population; food, shelter and medical care; are looked after, allowing the residents of the planet opportunity to think beyond their basic day-to-day survival needs. Tall buildings of glass and steel litter the cities, while holographic billboards advertise many products and services. Ariel is noted for its exceptional network of medical facilities; including hospitals, schools and research facilities; of which Saint Lucy's hospital in Ariel City is a prime example. The planet is also noted for its museums and fine restaurants, as well as for being the only Core world to have no long-term prisons. A contract with the Trader's Guild transports prisoners to off-world facilities.
Ariel is known throughout the Union of Allied Planets for the technical and cultural achievements of its citizenry; indeed, statistically, more winners of the Medal of Societal Advancement hail from Ariel than any other world in the Alliance. The planet's institutions have a strong history of supporting the arts, with musicians, artists, craftsmen and writers taking up residence on Ariel. Most famous chefs either hail from Ariel, or emigrate to the planet to ply their trade. Due to its status as a Central Planet, landing on Ariel is restricted; only ships with legitimate business are given clearance to make planetfall, and they need dual commerce permits from both the UAP and the Trader's Guild.
In 2517, Saint Lucy's hospital was the target of a raid by a group of outlaws.
Locations
Ariel City is one of the planet's main cities. Highly urbanized, the city is full of skyscrapers and is situated on the coast. Ariel City is the location of Saint Lucy's hospital, Shinei University, the starship docks, and a large municipal junkyard.
Numerous cities are located across Ariel, including: Gossamer, Codithian, North Hauer, South Hauer, Gohin, Tolli Basin, West Firebrand, Placious Caelum, Trident, Silver Fern, Bridgesbain, Nabokov Heights, Nikita, Guerenstradt, and Gorehaven. In addition to the urban centres, at least four major transport and commercial hubs; UAP Transport Hub, Matheson Docks, Piper Docks, and Mandellia Docks; serve the planet. Ariel also boasts a bioluminescent lake that citizens and visitors alike are allowed to swim in.
Ariel is also the location of the Fissatore, a large orbital drydock used by the Alliance to produce a range of vessels, including the Glory class. Government
Ariel, like all planets under the authority of the Alliance, is governed by a planetary Governor. It is unknown what the electoral rules are on Ariel and therefore how governors are elected.

The Border planets are near enough to the central planets that they have business dealings with those on the Core. However, the Border planets are far enough away from the Core that the eyes of the Alliance can't always make out what's going on.
Thus, these planets are excellent locales for certain unscrupulous folk from the Core to conduct business dealings "in private." They don't have to move to these planets (Though there are those eccentrics who travel here from the Core to 'get away from it all' - the kind of people who build strong fortresses to keep out the riffraff, and would never dream of socializing with the local yokels). The irony is that these same folk are all in favor of the rules and regulations that govern business dealings throughout the systems - just as long as those rules and regulations don't affect them.
To give the folk on these planets credit where credits are due, there are plenty on the Border worlds who are eager to do business with those on the Core. And there are always countless numbers without a silver in their pocket here looking for work.

The Central planets are a wonderland of peace and technology. All citizens have enough to eat. They work in glistening skyscrapers and live in high-rise apartment buildings. The grass is green and the skies are clear and no one asks for anything. That's if you believe the Alliance propaganda.
To be fair, the propaganda is mostly true. Even the poor who live on the Core worlds rarely want for shelter or food. Still, contrary to what the Alliance might want everyone to think, not everyone on the Core worlds is well-to-do. Those who aren't wealthy don't find life much better than those living out on the Rim. They may be better schooled, and their work might not involve dirt collecting under their fingernails, but there are plenty of people who don't much like their lot in life.
Trapped in repetitive, unimaginative jobs, viewing nothing but the four low walls of a cube all day, they have the watchful eye of the Alliance on them at every turn. There is so much surveillance on a Core world 'to prevent crime and ensure the safety of citizens' that almost everything a person does is recorded on a monitor somewhere.
The authorities will tell you that crime is almost non-existent on the Central Planets, since their scanners are almost everywhere. Still, there are some who manage to find a way to poke the Alliance in its electronic eye now and then.
Most people on the Core worlds are content. They lead comfortable lives, with time and leisure to spend with their families. Their children all have access to the best quality education and health care. They have found the peaceful, prosperous existence that mankind has been seeking since he left the Garden of Eden. If they have to trade away some of their freedom to get this, they would tell you it was worth it.
These are the same people who can't understand why other people on the outer worlds fought so hard against it.

It was believed that the planet was suitable for terraforming. With the realization that Earth-That-Was would no longer be able to sustain its population, the Global Exodus Alliance was formed to evacuate the Sol system and relocate humanity to the newly discovered 34Tauri2020 star cluster. After a trip of almost one hundred and twenty years, robot terraformers began to terraform Bernadette in 2220. Terraforming of the planet and its accompanying moons was completed in 2240, with colonization beginning in the same year. As a result, Bernadette was the first planet colonized after the settling of Londinium and Sihnon.
The Prometheus, the only remaining ark from the Exodus that had not been used to settle Londinium and Sihnon, was used to populate the planet. Five times larger than a Tohoku-class cruiser, it was landed on the planet and the capital city of New Paris was formed around it. The Prometheus was converted into a museum dedicated to the bravery and courage of those travellers who had crossed the void of space to settle the new system.
Like other Central planets, Bernadette is a highly modern and civilized, and its citizens have access to high technology. The population's basic needs are provided for them, and large edifices of steel and metal dominate the skyline. Due to its status as a Central Planet, landing on Bernadette is technically restricted, although claiming to be a settler or a ship filled with children heading for the museum usually allows a ship clearance.
Bernadette was the traditional launch point for settlers looking to leave the Central Planets to start new lives in the Border or Rim worlds. As a result, the official resettlement bureau, the Alliance Colony and Settlement Authority based in New Tombstone, required all prospective settlers to fill out CSA-0010B Request for Resettlement and Homestead forms. Many businesses catered to the large amount of prospective settlers by selling tools and supplies. However, an underground slave trade existed on the planet, where settlers were kidnapped and shipped off to work on terraforming stations. The slavers targeted new arrivals, and did not bother the local inhabitants as they rationalized that newcomers and outsiders were less likely to be missed.
Inhabitants
Bernadette supports a large religious community, with multiple faiths; including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism; being represented among the population. Bernadette is also the location of several fringe religions and cults.
Locations
Bernadette's capital city, New Paris, is the location of museum that chronicled the Great Exodus from Earth-That-Was. The museum resides inside the hull of the Prometheus, the last remaining ark that transported Humanity to the 'Verse. The city of New Tombstone is the home of the head offices of the Alliance Colony and Settlement Authority.

The fourth moon of Athens of the Georgia system is Whitefall, a large percentage of which was owned by a woman named Patience. Whitefall was said to not be civilization "in the strictest sense." It was rumored that there is a Blue Sun facility underneath one of the mountains.

A Border world, it was once said that "the prairies of Shadow stretched out so far under such a clear sky that a man could see from here to God's plan." Later, all that was left was charred and blackened rock.
Shadow was known for its grain farms and cattle ranches. The planet was almost entirely rural, with small towns dotting the countryside. While it had a few impressive towns, there were no actual cities. Its people were hard workers and independent-minded. Shadow was one of the first worlds to stand against the aggression of the Union of Allied Planets. Most of its young people volunteered to fight for Independence.
The aggressive bombing of Shadow during the war was meant to teach the Browncoats a lesson about the might of the Alliance. Instead, the bombing only hardened the resolve of those who fought and increased the Browncoats' hatred of their enemy. Those few from Shadow who survived this difficult time lost loved ones, their lives forever changed.
By 2511 - after only 106 years of habitability - Shadow became a ghost planet. No one lived there; no one could.

Greenleaf has a large tropical belt, creating massive jungles and rainforests. Tropical plants provide a variety of life-saving drugs that cannot easily be synthesized in a laboratory. Major drug companies set up shop on Greenleaf, providing the bulk of work for the locals.
Some of Greenleaf's residents, seeing the enormous profits that were being made, began to make 'clippings' of pharmaceutical plants and grow them privately to sell on the black market. The problem became so great that the drug companies began engineering new plant strains with traceable genetic tags, so that the confiscated merchandise could be traced back to the origin point. The technique has not yet led to any major arrests, mostly because there are dozens of small cartels, and they are difficult to track down in the jungle.
The Alliance is aware of the drug-smuggling problem out on Greenleaf, and they are clamping down on enforcement. Landing is more restricted on Greenleaf than on other Rim worlds, though smugglers who know the jungle can always find ways to sneak through.

The primary commercial activity was mud farming which was performed by indentured servants called "mudders". The mud was exported offworld and used in the manufacturing of ceramic components. The bulk of the population was impoverished.
The moon appeared to be owned by a magistrate named Higgins. Jayne Cobb became a folk hero to the mudders in the town of Canton due to his role in a botched heist.

It is a Border world and very much like a dozen other Border worlds throughout the system. However, the culture that had arisen on this planet was somewhat different than on other planets. A distinct separation existed between the citizens who lived in the established towns, and those who had made their lives in the hills. The hill people had become a very superstitious lot, and often their villages were not self-sufficient. To compensate for this, they were known to kidnap skilled tradespeople from the towns, whether they be citizens of Jiangyin or come from off-world. These tradespeople were put to work for the hill folk, whether moved by the plight of these less fortunate, or, more frequently, convinced through threat of violence.
