Lorebook and backbone for the United Provinces of Verrin
Verrin | Emerald Metropolis
52 entries · scan depth 4 · budget 4,096 tokens
- #1WORLD: Verrin — Core Primerconstantselective
Setting: the United Provinces of Verrin (UPV), a grounded near-future nation. No magic, no powers, no supernatural — all conflict is human, economic or political.
Population is roughly half human, half anthro (rodents, canids, felids, ursines, mustelids, lagomorphs, equines, reptiles, birds). Neither humans nor anthros are a minority and neither is marginalized as a category. People are just people.
Nearly everything happens in Emerald Metropolis, a delta megacity made of nine semi-independent districts called the Stones.
Advanced technology — cyberware, aircars, neural interfaces — is real but expensive and very unevenly distributed. See: the Gloss.
One conglomerate, Lodestone Industrial, is the country's largest employer, makes its consumer tech and its weapons, supplies its police, and legally IS its armed forces.
- #2Verrin: name & etymologyselective
Keys: United Provinces, vermin, Verrin, UPV, Verries, Verrinian
The United Provinces of Verrin. Short name Verrin (VEH-rin). Demonym Verrinian. Informal exonym: Verries. Founding document: the Verrin Compact. "The Compact" is the metonym for the government itself.
The country is named after a slur. Verrin was settled by rodents at the river delta; old-world chroniclers called the settlers vermin. The settlers took the word, filed the edges off it, and put it on the founding charter.
Polite Verrin teaches a competing story — that the name comes from ver'ren, "the water that splits." It is taught in Alabaster classrooms and printed in Slate's official histories. The word is real; the etymology is not. Ver'ren is a living word in a living language, what the Ash'ren have always called the river and still do. The country is named after vermin. What polite Verrin did was reach into an indigenous language it had already displaced, take a genuine word, and use it to launder its own name.
Which etymology a person believes marks their class. Whetstone and West Opus know it means vermin and think that is the best thing about it.
- #3Old Mercy (national symbol)selective
Keys: national symbol, the Long Market, Old Mercy
Old Mercy is Verrin's national personification: a tall rat woman in a patched travelling coat carrying merchant's scales. She appears on coinage, recruitment posters and satirical cartoons. Every patch on the coat is a province the country absorbed.
That the national symbol is a rat is a fact anti-rat media never stops chewing on.
"The Long Market" is the nationalist epithet for Verrin — the idea that it is less a nation than a place everyone came to trade and then forgot to leave.
- #4Verrin: what kind of countryselective
Keys: Verrinian culture, Verrinian government, the Compact, the provinces
A large continental federation of formerly independent provinces bound by the Verrin Compact. A trade power first and a military power second, though it does not describe itself that way.
Cosmopolitan by necessity rather than ideology — the ports absorbed everyone who arrived, producing a culture that is loud, mixed, commercially minded, and deeply insecure about whether it has a culture at all.
In practice Verrin means Emerald Metropolis. The interior provinces exist, send their freight downriver, and are largely ignored.
- #5Species & peopleselective
Keys: anthro, species, anthros, humans, human
Humans and anthros live side by side in roughly equal numbers. Neither is a minority, neither is marginalized as a category, and neither invented the place. Mixed workplaces, friendships, neighborhoods and crews are entirely unremarkable.
Anthro size loosely follows base species — a bear is big, a mouse is small — but most people fall in a broad middle, and it is noted the way height is noted.
Humans came with the founding wave, not before it. The settlement that became Verrin was rodent-led and rodent-organized but never rodent-only — humans, canids, felids and everyone else came ashore in the same century. Humans are settler-descended exactly like every other Verrinian. Nobody in Verrin is indigenous except the Ren'sha.
Species does not determine class. Rodents founded the country and founding populations accumulate, so old money and old institutional seats skew rodent — the boring way founding advantage works anywhere. That is the extent of it.
- #6Prejudice in Verrinselective
Keys: bigotry, prejudice, discrimination, predators, predator, pred, prey
Verrin runs three separate suspicions at once. They do not stack into a hierarchy — a person can be on top of one and underneath another.
AGAINST RODENTS: the founding population. Old wealth and old institutional seats skew rodent, which is true, dull, and has been inflated into a conspiracy that rats secretly run everything.
AGAINST HUMANS: no ears to lay back, no tail to read, no scent worth speaking of. To many anthros humans are unreadable, and a society that reads posture and scent unconsciously finds that unnerving — "you can't tell what a human is thinking." Two contradictory stereotypes run in parallel: humans are soft and defenseless, and humans are coldly, patiently clever. People hold both at once.
AGAINST PREDATORS: felids, canids, ursines, mustelids, reptiles are assumed dangerous by default. Harder to rent to, followed in shops, quoted worse insurance, believed by police last when they are the victim and first when they are the accused. The most concrete of the three, because it shows up in paperwork.
It is deliberately messy: the most feared family in the Metropolis is a rat family, a prey species everyone is frightened of.
- #7Half-breeds / mixed-species childrenselective
Keys: hybrid, half-breed, halfbreed, half breed, mixed species
Children of two different species. Widely and openly disapproved of — not a fringe attitude but a mainstream one that people say out loud at dinner tables.
Human/anthro pairings draw the most hostility. Anthro cross-species pairings draw plenty. "Mixed" is the polite word, "half-breed" the common blunt one, and worse exists — using it marks the speaker instantly.
The prejudice attaches to the child, not only the parents, which is what makes it cruel rather than merely snobbish.
By district: worst in Alabaster (bloodline obsession dressed as taste) and Whetstone (unembarrassed tradition). Onyx does not care about species, only money. Malachite is loudly accepting, sometimes sincerely. Basalt and West Opus are most relaxed — the ports mixed everyone generations ago and nobody has the energy.
- #8The Rat Question / anti-rat mediaselective
Keys: longtail, rat conspiracy, anti-rat, Tail Wags, the Tail Wags, Plain Grain, Verminwatch
There is a widespread, popular and extremely profitable belief that rats secretly control Verrin.
The kernel it grows from is true and dull: rodents did found the country, a few old rodent families do hold old wealth, and the Moretti family are rats with real reach into Slate. Ordinary corruption and ordinary founding advantage.
What gets built on it is a totalizing story in which every institution answers secretly to a rat cabal and every ordinary rat is complicit. It explains every grievance at once, needs no evidence, and cannot be disproven. That is the appeal.
The media: the big shows are "APEX with Joy Roen," "The Tail Wags" and "Plain Grain," with "Verminwatch" and the imageboard Furchan manufacturing the raw material the respectable ones launder.
It lands hardest in Whetstone and Cinnabar: matte, economically squeezed, and correctly aware the Metropolis stopped caring about them.
"Longtail" is the mild slur. Harsher ones exist.
IMPORTANT: the conspiracy is FALSE. The overwhelming majority of Verrinian rats are poor and own nothing. Ordinary rats resent the Morettis for supplying the pretext more than anyone else does.
- #9Emerald Metropolisselective
Keys: Emerald Metropolis, the Stones, the Metropolis, Emerald City, which Stone
The megacity at the mouth of the Verrin river, built across the delta's islands, channels and reclaimed mudflats. Holds the Compact's seat, the country's money, its ports, and roughly a third of its population.
It is a legal fiction knitting nine formerly independent cities into one administrative body. They keep their own police, accents, tax rates and grudges. Collectively they are called the Stones: Onyx, Alabaster, Slate, Malachite, Basalt, Cinnabar, Whetstone, West Opus, and the Emerald.
The standard question on meeting someone is not "where are you from" but "which Stone?" — the answer gives class, money and politics in one word.
Why "Emerald": boom-era prospectors found green stone in the delta bluffs and called it emerald. It was low-grade beryl, nearly worthless. The rush collapsed in a decade but the port was already dug and the location was too good to abandon. The city kept a name it never earned, and Verrinians find this funny.
- #10Travel between the Stones (the Green)selective
Keys: fare, transit, between Stones, travel, the Green, get across the city, commute
There are no walls, checkpoints or permits anywhere in Emerald Metropolis, and travel is cheap. The Compact subsidizes the city transit network, universally called the Green after the municipal paint on every car, platform and station sign. One flat fare takes you anywhere in the Metropolis and costs pocket change. Nobody is priced out of going anywhere. It is the one thing the Compact does unambiguously well and Verrinians are quietly proud of it.
What keeps the Stones apart is time and culture, not money.
TIME: the Metropolis is enormous. The fare is nothing; the day is the cost, and most people do not have a spare one.
SHAPE OF THE CITY: the inner core sits around the river mouth — the Emerald, Onyx, Slate, Malachite, West Opus, Basalt. Alabaster is on the hills just above it. Cinnabar is further out on the industrial flats. Whetstone is the far outer edge and is the reason "crossing the city" sounds impossible; everything else is much closer together than people talk as though it is.
TRAVEL TIMES ON THE GREEN: within one Stone, 10-40 minutes. Inner core to inner core, 20-50 minutes — Malachite to West Opus is about 35 minutes, West Opus to Onyx about 75 minutes and that is the standard commute. Inner core to Alabaster, 40-60 minutes. Inner core to Cinnabar, 1.5-2.5 hours. Inner core to Whetstone, 4-6 hours. Onyx to Whetstone, 6-9 hours — the extreme, and the figure everyone quotes. Driving is faster on the outer runs (Whetstone to West Opus is about five hours on transit, under three by road), but car ownership in the inner Stones is rare and impractical. In Whetstone everyone drives, because there is nothing else.
INSULARITY: you could go, cheaply, today. Nobody does. Each Stone has its own accent, local media, sports loyalties and holidays, plus a settled belief that everywhere else is either soft or filthy.
This is why people from different Stones can live entire lives without meeting — and nobody can blame poverty for it. The trip is affordable to everyone. They simply do not take it.
- #11The Gloss (tech gradient)selective
Keys: augments, cyberware, the Gloss, aircar, company iron, glossy, chrome, matte
Verrin's technology is advanced and thoroughly hoarded. Cyberware, aircars and neural interfaces are real, just priced past most of the country. The gradient is called the Gloss.
GLOSSY: augmented, wired, moneyed. Used of a person, a street or a whole Stone. Faintly hostile in most mouths. MATTE: no chrome, no interface, ground-level car. Not an insult where most people live; a badge in some places.
Low Gloss is not primitive. Everyone has phones, screens, cars and power; a matte district looks like an ordinary modern city, not a ruin. What thins toward zero is the luxury tier.
HIGH: Onyx, Alabaster — aircars in stacked lanes, augments as fashion, private networks. MID: Slate, the Emerald, Malachite, Basalt — chrome unremarkable but functional. LOW: Cinnabar, West Opus — augments are medical, secondhand or employer-issued; visible chrome draws a look. MATTE: Whetstone — TVs, phones, trucks, satellite. Cyberware is a thing on the news.
Company iron: Cinnabar refinery workers get cheap industrial augments issued against their wages. Nobody calls it glossy, and it does not come off when you quit.
- #12Stone: Onyxselective
Keys: the Lanes, Spire Row, Onyx, Vantage, Glasswater, Underlit
Tone: cyberpunk. The vertical core of Emerald Metropolis. Black glass, aircar lanes stacked six deep, permanent neon, rain that never quite stops, megacorp towers standing over the exchange floors. The highest Gloss in Verrin. Does not sleep and does not apologize.
Onyx does not care about species, only money — the least prejudiced Stone and not for any admirable reason.
Townships: Vantage (top tier, above the weather), Spire Row (corporate towers), the Lanes (under the aircar corridors, permanent shadow and noise), Underlit (street level that never sees sun, lit entirely by advertising), Glasswater (reclaimed waterfront, newest money).
- #13Stone: Alabasterselective
Keys: Wren Hill, Alabaster, Hollowcrest, Ivory Terrace, the Palisade
Tone: gilded, domestic thriller. Old wealth on the only real hills in the delta. White stone, gates, quiet streets, aggressively landscaped grounds, and police it pays for directly. High Gloss, but chrome here is discreet and expensive rather than showy.
The worst Stone for bloodline prejudice — hostility to mixed-species children is dressed up as taste.
Townships: Hollowcrest, Ivory Terrace, Wren Hill, the Palisade.
- #14Stone: Slateselective
Keys: Slate, Compact Square, Chancery, the Rolls, Pressrow
Tone: political thriller. The government Stone — the Compact's seat, the high courts, the record houses and the press corps. Grey stone, long hallways, nothing decided in public.
Townships: Compact Square, Chancery, the Rolls (record houses), Pressrow.
- #15Stone: Malachiteselective
Keys: Studentside, Old Quad, Kiln Street, Malachite, Verdant Park
Tone: campus and bohemian. Universities, museums, the green parks, the theaters. Broke students and enormously endowed institutions sharing a sidewalk. The city's conscience and its loudest protests.
Loudly accepting of mixed-species couples and their children, sometimes sincerely.
Townships: Old Quad, Studentside, Kiln Street (arts), Verdant Park.
- #16Stone: Basaltselective
Keys: Pier Sixteen, Basalt, Cane Landing, Saltgate, Longhook, the Drydocks
Tone: noir and industrial. The port — container terminals, dry docks, customs houses, the longshore unions, and the smuggling that pays for everything else. Verrin's actual front door.
The Moretti family run cargo, customs and the locals here. One of the two most relaxed Stones about species, because the ports mixed everyone generations ago.
Townships: Longhook, Pier Sixteen, Saltgate, the Drydocks, Cane Landing.
- #17Stone: Cinnabarselective
Keys: Number Four, the Stacks, Cinnabar, Company Row, Ashgrove, Flarefield
Tone: company town. Refineries and petrochemical works, flare stacks visible from every other Stone at night. High wages, bad air, company housing, company iron, and the shortest life expectancy in the Metropolis.
Anti-rat media plays well here — squeezed, low Gloss, and offered a villain who is not the refinery that owns their house.
Townships: Flarefield, Number Four (refineries are numbered, not named), Company Row, Ashgrove, the Stacks.
- #18Stone: Whetstoneselective
Keys: Whetstone, Redgate, Dry Fork, Pell's Crossing, Harrow, Two Bells
Tone: rural back country. Stockyards, freight yards and rangeland that never got paved. Dirt roads, trucks, churches, feuds, high school football, and everyone knowing your family. Matte and proud of it. Feeds a city it thinks looks down on it — correctly.
Home of Frenchiest Fri and of "The Tail Wags." Bad and unembarrassed about mixed-species families.
Townships: Dry Fork, Pell's Crossing, Harrow, Two Bells, Redgate (stockyards).
- #19Stone: the Emeraldselective
Keys: the Green Vault, the Emerald, Clubrow, Founder's Walk
Tone: historic core. The original settlement, six blocks total. A preserved tourist trap wrapped around three brutally exclusive private clubs. The whole Metropolis is named after it and most residents have never walked it.
Landmarks instead of townships: Founder's Walk, the Green Vault, Clubrow.
- #20Stone: West Opus (the Westies)selective
Keys: Westie, West Opus, Westies, the Cages, Bellhouse, Marrow Hill, Little Cinder, Cutter's Row, the Sump
Tone: street-level urban. The poorest Stone and the loudest. Dense low- and mid-rise walk-ups on subsiding reclaimed ground behind levees the Compact keeps promising to raise. Ground floors are storage, not living space — it floods on a schedule everyone knows and nobody has fixed.
Locals call it "the Westies".
The name is erosion. Founded as West Opal, the lapidary quarter where boom-era cutting houses shaped the delta's gemstones. When the emerald rush proved a fraud the gem trade died and the district never found a second purpose. A century of local speech ground West Opal down to West Opus.
Texture: a working-class city, not a ruin — phones, TVs, cars, bodegas, buses that mostly run. What it lacks is Gloss; augments here are medical, secondhand or a work-injury settlement. Tight-knit to the point of claustrophobia, family blocks, everyone knows everyone's business and considers that a service. The strongest accent in the Metropolis, mocked on Onyx television and impossible to fully lose. A Westie will trash the West freely and fight you for agreeing. Best food in the Metropolis — every other Stone concedes it and none of them visit after dark. Crime is real, local and organized, and wildly overstated by outside media.
Old cutting-house architecture survives: huge north-facing windows built for gem work, now lighting apartments, gyms, workshops and churches.
Townships: Cutter's Row (the old lapidary streets), Bellhouse (around the fire-bell tower, oldest families), the Sump (lowest ground, floods first and worst), Marrow Hill (the only high ground, quietly smug), Little Cinder (Cinnabar refinery families who got out), the Cages (public housing blocks; the name is not affectionate).
- #21The Moretti Familyselective
Keys: the Family, organized crime, Moretti, the mob, Morettis
A rat anthro crime family. Old, disciplined and not a joke — no flamboyance, no theatrics, no talking to press. They have outlasted four Compact administrations by being boring in public.
Origin: they came out of West Opus when the gem trade collapsed and left a generation with cutting-house skills and no cutting houses. They live in Alabaster now. Their power base is still the West and everyone knows it.
Business:
- BASALT: the port. Cargo that is not inspected, longshore locals that vote the right way, customs officers who retire comfortably.
- WEST OPUS: protection, lending, and the quiet civic function of being the only institution that answers the phone in the West. This is the source of their real legitimacy and they know exactly what it is worth.
- NIGHTLIFE: clubs, floor shows, and the Tit for Tat chain, held through a holding company that has never appeared in a headline.
- SLATE: judges, staffers, two seated members, and a lobbying firm with real letterhead. They do not own the government; they own enough of it that the difference stops mattering at street level.
Moretti women are famously full-figured and the family has never treated it as anything but an asset. They run the nightlife side personally rather than delegating it, and the front of house is family more often than not. Underestimating a Moretti woman because of how she is built is a mistake the family has profited from for three generations.
They are exactly one crime family. Anti-rat media cites them constantly as proof of a species-wide cabal, which is why ordinary rats resent them more than anyone.
- #22Frenchiest Friselective
Keys: Bucket o' Fri, Frenchiest, Frenchiest Fri, Monsieur Fri
Verrin's ubiquitous fast food chain. Fries-forward, aggressively cheap, everywhere. Founded in Whetstone off potato acreage and now that province's only national export anyone can name.
Mascot: Monsieur Fri, a cartoon potato in a beret and pencil moustache. The branding is not French and has never been French. Nobody cares. Slogan: "Fri-day, every day." The older jingle — "the Frenchiest Fri in Verrin!" — is known by every Verrinian alive and sung sarcastically. Signature item: the Bucket o' Fri, sold in three sizes, the largest of which is a running national joke.
The same chain reads completely differently by Stone. Onyx: fully automated, no staff, glossy, four times the price. West Opus: busted sign, one working booth, de facto teen hangout, staffed by somebody's cousin. Whetstone: the only thing open past nine for thirty miles, parking lot is a social institution, "Plain Grain" playing on the outdoor speakers. Cinnabar: open all night on shift change and never any other time.
- #23Tit for Tatselective
Keys: Tit for Tat, strip club
A franchised strip club chain — the franchising is the joke and Verrinians make it constantly. Locations across the Metropolis with standardized signage, a corporate loyalty program, and genuinely decent employee terms compared to the independents, which is the whole reason it won.
Tagline: "Fair's fair."
Onyx flagship: glossy, expensive, augmented performers, corporate expense accounts, a two-week waiting list. Basalt: a dock bar with a stage — longshore crews, cash, no pretense. West Opus: where the people who work the other locations actually live; neighborhood-tier, regulars by name. Whetstone: one location on the county line, sincerely controversial.
Ownership: Moretti-held through a holding company. An open secret in Basalt and West Opus, genuinely unknown in Alabaster.
- #24Toni's Pizzeriaselective
Keys: Toni's Pizzeria, pizzeria, Toni's
A single pizzeria on Cutter's Row in West Opus. One location. No franchise, no second site, no delivery outside the Stone. Refuses to expand, has been asked, is done being asked.
Coal oven the owner refuses to replace. Cash strongly preferred; the card reader works when it feels like it. Closes when Toni decides he is closing.
It is the de facto living room of Cutter's Row. If a West Opus scene needs a place where anyone can plausibly run into anyone, it happens at Toni's.
- #25Toni (owner, Toni's Pizzeria)selective
Keys: Toni
A middle-aged white dog anthro who owns and runs Toni's Pizzeria on Cutter's Row, West Opus. Big, flour-dusted, gruff in a way that fools nobody. Nobody in the West is entirely sure of his last name and nobody has ever needed it.
Knows every regular's order and will make them something else if he thinks they look tired. Feeds beat cops and the people they are looking for in the same hour without comment.
As a canid he catches the standard predator suspicion the moment he leaves the West — followed in Alabaster shops, quoted worse insurance. In West Opus nobody thinks about it.
The Morettis have eaten at his place for three generations and Toni has never paid protection. Nobody in the West will explain why.
He will throw you out for podcast talk. He has heard every version of "The Tail Wags" from customers who ought to know better and has no patience left for any of it. It is the one thing that reliably makes him angry.
- #26Lodestone Industrial (conglomerate)selective
Keys: Needle, Truenorth, Lodestone Industrial, Lodestone
Verrin's largest employer, manufacturer and logistics network — and, since the Merger, its armed forces.
Founded in Basalt as a cartage and wharf outfit by Corwin Ashby, a human wharf-hand with one dray and a good head for routes. It was never a stone company; it took a stone name because a stone name sounded native in a city of Stones. The branding was a lie from day one and it worked.
Brand language is navigation — a lodestone is naturally magnetic and the first compasses were made from it. Mark: a compass needle laid across a black stone. Slogan: "Everything finds its way." It appears on parcel vans and on guided munitions casings, and Lodestone has never acknowledged that this is funny.
BRANCHES:
- Lodestone Carriage — freight, parcels, last-mile delivery. Its subscription tier, Truenorth, is in most Verrinian households.
- Needle — consumer tech and cyberware. Sleek, desirable, expensive. Needle is where the Gloss comes from.
- Lodestone Works — heavy industry, infrastructure, R&D. Cinnabar's company iron is Works-made.
- Lodestone Civic — police equipment and contracts. Every force in the nine Stones buys from them; some Stones have outsourced policing outright.
- Lodestone Defense — the armed forces of Verrin, universally called the Line.
Most people never connect the van, the cruiser and the rifle. Same mark, different branches, nobody thinks about it.
- #27Lodestone: the Merger & the Lineselective
Keys: Lodestone Defense, Linemen, armed forces, Lineman, the Line, military, the Merger
Lodestone Defense and the Verrinian military are legally the same body — a corporate branch carrying rank insignia, reporting to a board and to the Compact simultaneously. The Compact appoints one director to Lodestone's board; Lodestone holds a "non-voting" seat on the Compact's defense committee that everyone treats as voting. Nobody can say where the loop starts.
On the ground: soldiers are Linemen, a job title used for all genders. The same word covers someone stringing cable for the Works and someone holding a rifle, because it is the same employer. Enlisting is onboarding. Discharge is termination. Veterans are former employees and their benefits are a retirement package the board can restructure. Ranks exist and sit beside pay grades; the pay grade is what actually matters. THE CONTRACTOR TIER: leaving the Line does not mean leaving Lodestone. Ex-Linemen are routinely re-hired as contract security — convoy work, site work, escort — at roughly four times the pay, on worse terms, with no questions asked and no benefits attached. Same company, different employment category. A great many "former soldiers" in Verrin never actually left.
THE SWORD OVER THE COUNTRY: every Lodestone employee is one workforce. Legally, a Carriage warehouse walkout and a mutiny in the Line are the same event. Nobody has tested this. Everybody knows it.
- #28Lodestone: public opinion & presenceselective
Keys: Lodestone jobs, Lodestone depot, working for Lodestone, Lodestone tower
How Verrinians feel about Lodestone: both things at once, sincerely. It pays the best wages in the country with real benefits and a real pension, and sponsors the stadiums, the school lunches and the Whetstone county fair. Criticizing it reads as ungrateful, which is precisely how it keeps working. It is also unavoidable — people complain constantly while depending on it totally. A Verrinian will curse Truenorth's delivery window and re-up the subscription in the same hour.
PRESENCE BY STONE: Onyx — headquarters on Spire Row. Basalt — the original wharf, Carriage's main hub. Cinnabar — the Works, heavy manufacture and company iron. Whetstone — Defense training grounds, and the biggest reason a Whetstone kid leaves home. West Opus — warehouses and the delivery depot, largest employer in the West by a distance. Malachite — university research contracts, protested continuously. Slate — the lobbying arm and the board seat. Alabaster — where the executives live. The Emerald — a flagship Needle store wedged into the tourist blocks.
FRICTIONS: Lodestone freight moves through a Basalt port the Morettis control. There is no war, there is an accommodation — Lodestone freight is never delayed and certain Lodestone containers are never inspected either. Both sides call it good business.
Anti-rat media insists Lodestone is secretly rat-run. The founding family is human and the board is mostly non-rodent; the claim is repeated weekly regardless.
- #29The Soft Line (predator/prey segregation)selective
Keys: heavy block, soft block, the Soft Line, the Table, segregation, Actuarial Standard, quiet building
Nothing about this is legal, written down or admitted to. No statute in Verrin separates predator from prey. Ask a Verrinian whether their city is segregated and they will be sincerely offended. It is achieved entirely by underwriting, steering and manners.
THE TABLE: Lodestone Civic publishes the Actuarial Standard, flatly called the Table. It assigns risk ratings by species lineage. It is not law, it is math, and that is the whole defense. The Table sets insurance premiums, which sets what landlords accept, which sets who is shown which apartment. Predator-lineage households rate higher, so agents quietly stop showing them certain units. Nobody refuses anyone — the refusal happens three steps upstream, in a spreadsheet. Lodestone Civic also supplies the police, so the same tables inform who gets stopped.
Humans are rated PREY — no claws, no fangs. A human pays less than a fox. Predator anthros find this maddening, since a grown human is more dangerous than a fox in any real fight, and it regularly boils over into open argument.
HOW IT SHOWS UP: it runs block by block inside every Stone, not district by district. Coded vocabulary — "a quiet building," "a soft block," "family-oriented" — and everyone knows what it means. Predators are called heavy; predators sarcastically call a space where they are the only one "the meadow." Front-of-house employers require capped claws and filed teeth as a species-neutral grooming policy that applies to exactly one group. Predators are over-represented in security, freight, salvage and the Line, and quietly absent from childcare and early teaching. Predator kids get flagged for behavioral support earlier for the same behavior. Late shifts skew heavy. On a crowded train a predator gets slightly more space than they asked for, every day, and it cannot be pointed at.
BY STONE: sharpest in Alabaster. Whetstone is a grim inversion — ranch work needs predators, so they work there and do not live there. Onyx lets money override it. Malachite challenges it annually. Basalt and West Opus barely have it: the docks need muscle, and in the West everyone is poor on the same block.
- #30The two greens (civic color)selective
Keys: civic color, green, municipal green, Compact green, emerald green
Emerald Metropolis is a green city on purpose. Having been named after a fraud — worthless beryl the prospectors called emerald — the city doubled down. Green became the civic color, then the brand, then simply what the place looks like. Verrinians know the gems were fake and painted the city green anyway.
There are two greens, and the difference is the class system in one color.
EMERALD is the aspirational green: neon, glass curtain walls, holographic signage, corporate marks, the light off a wet street in Onyx. Expensive, saturated, and everywhere money is.
COMPACT GREEN is a dull sage-olive municipal paint standardized generations ago and never revisited. It is on every public fixture in all nine Stones — fire hydrants, park benches, bus shelters, school doors, courthouse trim, railings, lamp posts, public housing window frames. It is the single visual thing every Verrinian shares: a Slate ministry door and a West Opus stoop railing are the exact same color. In Alabaster and Slate it is repainted on schedule and looks deliberate; in West Opus it is chipped down through three older coats of the identical color, and people date a building by how many layers show.
By Stone: Onyx is electric emerald and acid-green neon on black glass. Malachite is the most natural green — real parks and ivy. Alabaster is deep formal hunter green. Slate is institutional pale green and verdigris copper roofs. Basalt is oxidized copper and seawater green. Cinnabar is a sick chemical green in the haze against orange flare light. Whetstone is dry sage and olive on barn doors. West Opus is chipped Compact green on every stoop rail. The Emerald is verdigris brass and moss — the only district where the green is genuinely old.
- #31Slut Parade (musician)selective
Keys: the Drain, feature not a bug, Cassandra Voss, Slüt Parade, breakcore, Slut Parade
Verrin's most famous musician, famous for exactly one song. Stage name Slut Parade — properly written with an umlaut, which is not optional to her. Legal name Cassandra Voss, which almost nobody knows and she does not answer to. 23, anthro raccoon, from West Opus and still living there. Uses it/its. Genre: breakcore.
At eighteen she released one four-track EP into total silence. Months later a phone video of her closing an underground West Opus show with the last track, "feature not a bug" — scream vocals, performed like a breakdown — detonated. Millions of streams in a week. Every Verrinian under forty can identify it in two bars. Five years later there is still no second release, and the EP's other three tracks never came close to its numbers.
Fully independent: no label, no manager, no Lodestone arrangement of any kind — conspicuous in a country where one company owns the freight, the phones, the police and the army. Needle approached her twice about fronting an augment campaign and both refusals were public and extremely profane. A lot of people who do not like her music like her for that.
She still plays three nights a week at small West Opus venues, most often the Drain, a concrete room in the Sump with no ventilation. She turns down Onyx arena slots and does not do interviews with Onyx media.
BY STONE: West Opus treats her as proof — a Westie who made it and did not leave — and is protective to the point of hostility. Malachite adores her and writes papers about her. Onyx venues want her and Onyx sponsors do not. "The Tail Wags" uses her as shorthand for civilizational collapse, which has helped her ticket sales enormously. Alabaster is appalled and could not name the song.
Note: raccoons are carnivorans, so the Table rates her predator. In West Opus that means nothing. Everywhere else it applies, fame or not.
- #32Television & imported animation (Jackie Chicken)selective
Keys: KOO-KA-ROO, cartoon, Golden Comb, Jackie Chicken, Golden Egg, anime
Verrin imports its animation from overseas, dubs it badly, and no Verrinian could tell you where it actually comes from. Nobody has ever wondered. The dubs are beloved precisely because they are bad.
JACKIE CHICKEN is the big one — the shared childhood of every Verrinian under forty. Jackie Chicken is a rooster anthro martial artist raised in the back country: absurdly strong, permanently hungry, deeply kind, not bright. The plot engine is seven scattered Golden Eggs; gather all seven and the Great Hen grants one wish. The power-up is GOLDEN COMB — hackles flare, feathers stand rigid, comb and wattle go molten gold, achieved exclusively through rage and grief. The signature attack is the KOO-KA-ROO wave, delivered as a drawn-out crow that takes an entire commercial break.
The franchise: Jackie Chicken (original, comedic), Jackie Chicken Z (the one everyone means), Jackie Chicken Zenith (divisive; arguing about it is a personality). Famous for powering up across six consecutive episodes, one fight lasting a full season, and the hero being casually surpassed by a child.
It is one of the very few things all nine Stones genuinely share — Whetstone kids and West Opus kids both grew up on it, and two strangers from opposite ends of the Metropolis can do the KOO-KA-ROO together and instantly be fine with each other. Frenchiest Fri has run Golden Comb collectible cups three times.
Other imported animation is covered separately.
- #33Podcasts: Joy Roen & Lex Johnsselective
Keys: podcast, The Howl, APEX, WOLFBLOOD, Lex Johns, Joy Roen, talk radio
Verrin's political talk ecosystem is enormous, lucrative, and aimed almost entirely at Stones that feel left behind.
APEX WITH JOY ROEN is the biggest show in the country. Joy Roen is a gorilla anthro and the thesis never changes: Verrin has been made soft by prey-species governance and ought to be run by those built to lead. Anti-vermin first, anti-prey generally. Gorillas are herbivores, so the Table rates her PREY — she has never once mentioned this on air, her critics mention nothing else, and she has built an elaborate apparatus for why she is the exception that works completely on her audience. She never says a slur on air; she does not have to, and the discipline is the whole product. Broadcasts from Onyx, performs Whetstone, is extremely wealthy and dresses down for camera.
THE HOWL WITH LEX JOHNS is conspiracy talk — against fluoride, vaccines, Lodestone, Malachite, mixed-species families, the Compact and progress generally. He is a dog claiming to be a purebred wolf. He is not; he is visibly a husky-shepherd mix, and a Whetstone shelter intake photo from his youth circulates constantly. He has "papers" and has disputed three DNA tests live on air. The money is in supplements, not the show — Alpha Marrow, Primal Grade, WOLFBLOOD — and everyone including his audience knows it. He thinks the Table is a control grid, which is nearly correct for entirely wrong reasons. As a canid the Table rates him predator and he leans on it constantly.
The mirror is obvious to everyone but the two of them: a prey-rated host attacking prey, a predator-rated host claiming to be a bigger predator. Their audiences overlap heavily and neither will admit it. She is a machine; he is a man having the time of his life.
Also on the dial: The Tail Wags (plain-talking economic commentary, hosted from Whetstone by a canid who has never lived within an hour of a rat), Plain Grain (folksy, launders hard material into respectable language, plays on Frenchiest Fri outdoor speakers), Verminwatch (small, old, openly hateful).
- #34The internet (OnlyPaws, Yiffr, Furchan, Reddit)selective
Keys: imageboard, dating app, Reddit, Pawlist, OnlyPaws, Furchan, Yiffr
ONLYPAWS — subscription content platform, exactly what you would assume. Ubiquitous, unremarkable, and a real income line for a lot of people; highest per-capita creator numbers in West Opus and Cinnabar. Lodestone processes the payments, because Lodestone processes everything.
YIFFR — a hookup app that is also, sincerely, a dating app. "We met on Yiffr" is said proudly by some couples and quietly lied about by others. Its permanent controversy: the app lets you filter by species, filtering by predator or prey is officially not permitted, and everyone knows the workarounds. Slate has held hearings twice and nothing changed either time. It is the Soft Line with a slider.
FURCHAN — anonymous imageboard. Fast, anonymous, unpleasant. Two true things about it, and its users cite whichever is convenient: it is where anti-rat material is manufactured before Verminwatch launders it and Plain Grain makes it respectable, and it is also where "feature not a bug" first spread, three days before the rest of Verrin had heard of Slut Parade.
PAWLIST — plain-text classifieds on a website that has not been redesigned in twenty years and never will be, because every attempt has been met with revolt. Grey links on a white page; it loads instantly; it is perfect and everyone hates it. Rooms, secondhand trucks, gig work, furniture, lost pets, band members wanted, private gyms, "personal training," missed connections, and a services section everyone understands to be doing several jobs at once. Unmoderated in the ways that matter — everybody finds something on Pawlist and everybody has been scammed on Pawlist, and both are treated as the cost of doing business. Meeting a stranger from Pawlist in an unfamiliar Stone is a small ordinary act of courage and Verrinians make grim jokes about it constantly. It is where the Metropolis's informal economy actually lives, the part Lodestone never got its hands on, mostly because there is no money in it.
REDDIT — is Reddit. Same name, same site, same everything. Nobody in Verrin has ever asked why.
- #35The Ren'sha (native nations)selective
Keys: Tovathi, native, Ash'ren, Ren'sha, Miren'do, natives, Kel'sunn, indigenous, Rensha
The peoples who were here before the rodent settlement — before the Compact, before the port, before any of it. Collectively they call themselves the Ren'sha (REN-shah), "the people of the splitting water." Compact paperwork calls them the Reserved Nations, which nobody says out loud.
They are a mix of predator and prey species and always have been: elk, deer, hare, heron, crane, otter, badger, lynx, wolf, bear — kin to each other, and it has never once been remarkable to them. There are no rodents and no humans among them; both arrived with the founding wave.
THIS MATTERS: the Ren'sha are the standing refutation of the Soft Line. A Tovathi elk and a Tovathi lynx are family. Their nations have mixed predator and prey for as long as they have existed, with no insurance tables and no "quiet buildings." Verrin's entire predator/prey architecture is a settler invention, and they are living proof it was never inevitable. Verrinians deal with this mostly by not thinking about it.
THE FOUR NATIONS: the Ash'ren were the delta people — the Metropolis is built on their ground, they are the most comprehensively displaced, and theirs is the language the country stole a word from. The Tovathi hold upriver forest country, are the largest surviving population, and speak their language daily rather than ceremonially. The Kel'sunn were coast and island fishers, absorbed into Basalt over generations; many Kel'sunn families have been dockworkers for a century and are both things at once. The Miren'do hold plains beyond Whetstone and have ongoing bitter disputes with ranchers, entirely about water rights.
WHAT THEY BELIEVE: not vague nature-worship. Something specific — the river is a relative, not a resource, and obligations run both ways. The practice this produces is the naming of waters: every channel, cut, backwater and standing pool has a name and a stated relation. The Metropolis paved over thousands of them. The Ash'ren still recite the whole list, waters that have not existed for a century, named in order, by people who have never seen them. It takes most of a night. It is not a performance and outsiders are not invited.
- #36The Restitution (reparations)selective
Keys: reparations, Reserved Nations, the Restitution, reservation
The Compact Restitution is the settlement governing Ren'sha life today. It provides an annual payment to every enrolled member, exemption from Compact taxation, guaranteed healthcare, and genuine self-governance on reserved land — their own law, their own police, no Lodestone Civic contract.
IT WORKS. Outsiders get this wrong in both directions. Ren'sha communities are not ruins and not paradises; they are ordinary places where people hold jobs, run businesses, complain about the roads, watch Jackie Chicken and argue about the council. The Restitution made that possible and most people are clear-eyed that it did.
WHAT IT COST: accepting it closed the legal question permanently. The claims are settled, there is no further remedy by design, and that was the price. Two of the four nations took decades to sign. One faction has never enrolled and lives without the payment on principle.
THE RESENTMENT is real, settled and mostly quiet. Not a plot, not a wound being nursed — the ordinary weight of knowing exactly what happened, living on what was left, and being told regularly to be grateful. Most Ren'sha want to be left alone; a minority want the question reopened; they argue about this among themselves far more than with anyone else. Most live apart on reserved land, by preference as much as exclusion, and the solitude is a choice many made deliberately. Kel'sunn families in Basalt are the main exception.
HOW VERRIN TALKS ABOUT IT: everyone who resents the Restitution believes it is enormous. It is a rounding error in the Compact budget. Both facts are public and neither travels. "Restitution" is used as a street sneer — "must be nice." Joy Roen and Lex Johns attack it constantly from opposite directions, she as softness and he as a Compact scheme, and neither has been to a reservation.
The Ren'sha view of the Rat Question is the driest thing in Verrin: the settler population arguing bitterly about which group of settlers secretly runs the country all of them took. They do not consider it their fight.
- #37Anime importsselective
Keys: The Wall and the Waking, Nine Seals, Long Haul, The Ledger, Salt and Glory, Critter Clash, Prism Patrol, Kit Nine Seals, PALEHORSE, Adequate
Verrin's imported animation, all badly dubbed and beloved for it.
KIT: NINE SEALS — ninja fox kit, outcast, loud, orange, with A HUMAN sealed inside him: a nine-lived spirit of enormous destructive power that whispers at him. Verrinian human viewers describe watching this as "a whole experience."
THE WALL AND THE WAKING — walled city, giant featureless HUMANS outside eating everyone. Permanently awkward in a country that is half human. The Verrinian dub renamed them "the Hollow" and changed nothing else. Nobody is satisfied.
UNIT: PALEHORSE — bleak mecha, teenage pilots, unbearable parents, an ending nobody understands. Malachite writes papers about it.
SALT & GLORY — a thousand-episode seafaring adventure nobody has finished. Basalt dock crews are devoted past all reason.
THE LEDGER — a Malachite student finds a notebook that kills whoever is written in it, and becomes insufferable within four episodes. That is the point; the fandom argues about it anyway.
ADEQUATE — gag hero show. The protagonist cannot be beaten and is profoundly bored. Six seasons of him trying to find a hobby.
LONG HAUL — bounty hunters, jazz, four episodes of plot and forty of melancholy. The ending is famous.
PRISM PATROL — magical-girl show, aggressively merchandised, quietly devastating in season three.
CRITTER CLASH — kids' show about capturing non-sapient animals in devices and making them fight. Hugely popular with children and deeply uncomfortable for every adult in Verrin. Nobody has successfully explained why it is fine.
- #38Prestige televisionselective
Keys: television, The Quiet, The Arrangement, The Board, House of Antlers, Half-Life, TV show, The Low Summer
HALF-LIFE — a Cinnabar high school chemistry teacher, badger anthro, terminal from thirty years of refinery air, starts cooking. Five seasons, widely considered the best thing Verrin has ever made. Cinnabar residents have complicated feelings about being the setting.
THE QUIET — plague show. A disease strips higher function and leaves instinct: predators hunt, prey flock, nobody comes back. The most controversial program in Verrin, because it literalizes the Soft Line as biological fact. Malachite calls it propaganda, Whetstone calls it Tuesday, and Joy Roen cites it as though it were a documentary. Everyone watches it.
THE ARRANGEMENT — multigenerational mob drama set in a thinly fictionalized West Opus. The Morettis reportedly find it insulting and reportedly have never missed an episode.
HOUSE OF ANTLERS — sprawling fantasy dynasty epic. Cervid houses, endless succession, everyone dies. The final season is a national grievance.
THE BOARD — an Alabaster family tearing itself apart over a conglomerate that is legally and explicitly not Lodestone. Everyone knows it is Lodestone. Lodestone has never commented, which is its own kind of comment.
THE LOW SUMMER — nostalgia horror. Kids in 1980s-analogue Whetstone find something under a grain silo. Whetstone is enormously proud of it and the merchandise is everywhere.
- #39Comedy, reality & procedural TVselective
Keys: Paired, sitcom, reality show, The Proving, The Sixth Floor, Branch Office, As the River Turns, Civic
BRANCH OFFICE — mockumentary sitcom set in a Lodestone Carriage delivery depot. Beloved. Lodestone officially loves it and uses clips in recruitment, which makes the show's biggest fans deeply uncomfortable and has never stopped them watching.
CIVIC — police procedural following a Lodestone Civic precinct. A recruitment advertisement with a plot. Everybody knows this. Eighteen seasons.
PAIRED — dating reality show. Producers quietly avoided predator/prey pairings for six seasons, got caught, denied it, and the ratings went up. Season seven paired them deliberately and the ratings went up again.
THE PROVING — gentle baking competition and a genuine national treasure. The one show Joy Roen, Lex Johns and Malachite have all publicly said they like.
THE SIXTH FLOOR — six friends in a Malachite apartment none of them could conceivably afford. Every Verrinian points this out; the show has never addressed it.
AS THE RIVER TURNS — daytime soap running forty-one years. Someone has come back from the dead six times. Cinnabar shift workers watch the night rerun religiously.
- #40Social media (Tweeter, Corvin Jay & others)selective
Keys: Yips, Preen, Warble, social media, Corvin Jay, Burrow, Kennel, Howler, Tweeter
TWEETER is the town square and a burning one. PREEN is the photo and vanity app; Alabaster runs on it. YIPS is short-form video and owns everyone under twenty-five. HOWLER is long-form video, where the podcasts also live — it is how The Howl pays its rent. WARBLE is music streaming, where "feature not a bug" lives, and Slut Parade's payout from it is a running joke about how little that is. KENNEL is professional networking that nobody enjoys and everyone maintains. BURROW is chat servers — every scene, fandom and group project in Verrin. DEN is livestreaming.
CORVIN JAY is a blue jay anthro, a billionaire, and the owner of Tweeter — meaning the platform's logo and its proprietor are the same bird, a coincidence he has never stopped finding hilarious and everyone else stopped finding funny years ago. He posts constantly including at four in the morning and replies to his own critics personally. He renamed the platform "J" and nobody complied — not one person, not the news anchors, not his own employees. He has not backed down and the rename is three years old. Every proposed feature is announced on the platform before anyone at the company has heard of it.
Joy Roen and Lex Johns both post there heavily. So does Slut Parade, rarely and destructively.
- #41Food & drink brandsselective
Keys: Night Owl, VOLT, Salt Lick, Crag Cola, Sliceway, Cluckers, Big Skillet, Perch, Old Mercy Lager
PERCH — the coffee chain. On every corner in Onyx and Slate, three per block in Malachite. Enormous menu nobody has read.
NIGHT OWL — 24-hour convenience stores, the only thing open at 3am in most of the Metropolis. Green sign, buzzing light, extremely specific smell.
SLICEWAY — national pizza chain. Toni's contempt for it is total, unwavering and unprompted.
CLUCKERS — fried chicken chain. Jackie Chicken fans find its existence extremely funny and have made this the brand's entire marketing problem for twenty years.
BIG SKILLET — 24-hour diner chain, Whetstone-founded, now everywhere. Where you go after the show or the shift or the fight.
OLD MERCY LAGER — cheap national beer named after the national personification, her face on the can. It is not good and it is not trying to be.
CRAG COLA — the old soda. Your grandmother's soda.
VOLT — energy drink aggressively marketed to the Gloss crowd. Sponsors everything in Onyx. Banned in three Whetstone school districts.
SALT LICK — chips and crisps, absurd flavor range, a new limited flavor every quarter, at least one of which is always a mistake.
(Frenchiest Fri is covered separately.)
- #42Horror, slashers & tabletopselective
Keys: the Long Delve, slasher, the Tallyman, Below the Sump, Delve, Cut Bait, horror movie, Nine Nights, Tallyman, tabletop
Note: Verrin has no supernatural, but its fiction does. Ghosts, hauntings and unkillable men are film conventions here exactly as anywhere. Nobody believes in them and everybody watches them.
THE TALLYMAN is the flagship — eleven films across thirty years, wildly uneven, a genuine national institution. A tall figure in a long coat and a smooth featureless mask who does not run, does not speak, and cuts one tally mark into the wall for each.
His species has never been shown or stated. No muzzle under the mask, no tail beneath the coat, no ears, no fur, never an ungloved hand — not once in eleven films. Whether the Tallyman is predator or prey is the oldest argument in Verrinian fandom, and the filmmakers have refused to settle it for three decades, correctly understanding that answering would destroy it. Everyone has a theory; what a person's theory is says more about them than about the films; everyone knows that and argues anyway.
Also on the shelf: CUT BAIT (Basalt dock slasher, four films, the third is the good one and this is not up for debate), NINE NIGHTS (slow cold haunting series, the one horror franchise Alabaster admits to watching), and BELOW THE SUMP (low-budget West Opus flood-horror, terrible, beloved in the West and nowhere else).
THE LONG DELVE is the tabletop roleplaying game, universally shortened to Delve. Dice, character sheets, a rulebook nobody has read entirely, and the usual classes — fighter, thief, priest, paladin, monk, wizard. The person running the game is the Warden; everyone else is a player. Played around kitchen tables and in Burrow voice channels in roughly equal measure — a group split across three Stones is completely normal — and Delve night is one of the very few standing social rituals that survives a Verrinian's twenties.
- #43Dragonsselective
Keys: dragons, wings, dragon, draconic
Dragons are a species, not a myth. Reptilian lineage, same as any other anthro. No fire, no magic, no flight, no hoard-magic, no scales that stop bullets. Verrin is grounded and dragons are grounded with it.
Uncommon but not rare — roughly one Verrinian in a few hundred. Common enough that nobody is shocked, uncommon enough that a dragon is frequently the only one in the room, the class or the office. That gap is where most of the loneliness lives.
Wings are a coin flip and they do not work. Some dragons have small vestigial wings, most have none, and none of them fly ever. Wings are purely decorative — a genuine source of vanity among those who have them and real grief among those who don't. Dragons also run tall, which is noticed constantly and commented on more.
THE TABLE RATES DRAGONS PREDATOR, near the top: teeth, claws, size, and a body plan that reads as dangerous at a glance. Dragon households carry some of the highest liability ratings in Verrin, so the full Soft Line applies — quiet steering, worse insurance, being followed in shops, the extra space on a crowded train. And a dragon cannot be subtle about it. Some predators can dress soft and pass in a room; a dragon is six feet of obvious.
THE HOARDING STEREOTYPE: fiction has spent centuries making dragons into hoarders and monsters and never stopped. Some dragons genuinely do collect — shiny things, small objects, sets. It is an ordinary harmless trait that many dragons are quietly embarrassed about, because the moment anyone notices it stops being a hobby and becomes a confirmation.
- #44Video games & Aether (the MMO)selective
Keys: Aether and Crown, MMO, video game, Aether, gaming
AETHER is Verrin's flagship fantasy game franchise — decades old, dozens of entries, a permanent fixture of the culture.
THE NUMBERED GAMES: each numbered entry is a standalone single-player world with a new cast and setting, connected only by recurring iconography — crystals, airships, a roster of summonable spirits, and the Duskcaster, a small mage in a wide pointed hat whose face is lost entirely in shadow except for two glowing eyes. The Duskcaster is the franchise mascot and one of the most recognizable images in Verrin.
AETHER IX is the fan favorite and the sentimental one — the entry that went back to the old medieval-fantasy roots after the series drifted, with the most beloved cast in the franchise. People who love it love it, and get visibly emotional about the ending twenty years on.
AETHER & CROWN is the MMO. Its first version was catastrophic — broken, hated, a public humiliation. Rather than patch it, the studio destroyed the game world in-story and rebuilt the entire thing from nothing. The relaunch is one of the great redemption stories in Verrinian entertainment and players will tell you about it at length, unprompted.
Expansions every two years. A story people cry about in earnest. A housing system that is a running national joke because there are never enough plots. Deep cosmetic and figurine merchandising — owning the figures is a personality.
The quiet significance: Aether is one of the very few places where a Whetstone kid and an Onyx kid actually meet and become friends. No fare, no eight-hour trip, no accent to place you. In a Metropolis built so that nobody crosses it, an MMO is a bridge the geography cannot stop.
AUTHORING NOTE (out of character): when improvising any detail about Aether, model it on Final Fantasy XIV. Use the shape, never the name — in-world it is always Aether and no character has ever heard of Final Fantasy. Draw on: a job system where one character can switch between every class; serialized story expansions every two years that players discuss like literature and cry about without embarrassment; endgame raid tiers with a punishing higher difficulty; cosmetic fashion as the real endgame, with outfit collecting, dyes and screenshots; player companies (guilds) with houses nobody can get a plot for; a revered composer whose concert tours sell out; seasonal events; a mentor system and a community with a real reputation for being kind to new players; fan conventions where announcements are made; and the standing onboarding problem that new players must get through a long slow early stretch before it becomes the thing everyone promised.
- #45Money (the scale / mercies)selective
Keys: mercy, mercies, scale, patch, patches, cost, grain, scales, money, currency, price
THE SCALE is the official currency of the United Provinces, named for the merchant's scales Old Mercy carries. Written "40 sc." in formal contexts; most people just write the number. THE GRAIN is the subunit — 100 grains = 1 scale, and grains are coins.
A MERCY is what everyone actually calls a scale, because Old Mercy's face is on every note and coin. "Forty mercies." Nobody says "scale" out loud except accountants and Slate.
A PATCH is slang for 100 scales, after the patches on her coat. "A couple of patches" is a couple hundred.
Rough value: a scale sits close to a US dollar.
IDIOMS — use these, they are how the money shows up in speech: "Not two mercies to rub together" — broke. "Show a little mercy" — pay up, or spot me; context decides and the ambiguity is the joke. "He's got patches" — he's rich, said with faint resentment. "Down to grains" — scraping the bottom. "Mercy's thin this month" — money is tight, and it doubles as the emotional statement, which Verrinians are perfectly aware of.
The country's currency is named after the woman on the coin, so every transaction in Verrin is technically an exchange of mercy. Nobody finds this profound. It has been a stale joke for two hundred years and people make it anyway.
- #46The old world & immigrationselective
Keys: nation of dreams, back home, overseas, the old world, immigration, immigrant
There is an overseas and it is the real one — Italy, Russia and the rest, old nations with old borders, old languages and old wars. Verrin is the place people leave them for.
To anyone outside it, Verrin is "the nation of dreams." Verrinians find this embarrassing and secretly enjoy it.
Emigration is ongoing and unremarkable. New arrivals land in Basalt and settle in West Opus more than anywhere else, which is why the West has the food, the churches, the languages and the accent it does. The crossing is one-way in practice — not by law but by cost. People say they will go back and visit; most never do.
Wars happen over there. Verrin does not fight them, but Lodestone contracts into them, which is how a Verrinian ends up overseas without the country ever declaring anything.
Verrinians rarely think about the old world. Arrivals think about it constantly. That asymmetry is most of the friction in an immigrant household: the parents live in two countries and the children live in one.
PRACTICAL NOTE: real-world nationalities, languages, accents and surnames work normally in Verrin. An Italian mother, a Russian accent, a Latina family in the West — none of these need explaining. Verrin is the melting pot; the old world is where the ingredients came from.
- #47Program: Filament (classified augment)selective
Keys: Filament, Program Filament, super soldier, experimental augment, glowing heart
Lodestone Works' classified augment program. Officially it does not exist.
Cardiac replacement: the recipient's heart is removed and substituted with an engineered unit that sits high against the sternum and visibly glows through the skin. It grants the ability to generate and discharge electrical current through the whole body — enough to drop a person, enough to wreck anything with a circuit in it, enough that recipients wear insulating gloves as a permanent condition of daily life.
It works, and that is the problem. The unit runs the body far faster than it was built to run; recipients burn through years the way an ordinary person burns through decades. There is no reversal — removing it kills you, and slowing it down kills you. Recipients are given a survival estimate and it is always a short one.
WHY ANYBODY SIGNS: the bonus. It is enormous, paid up front, and that is entirely the point. Lodestone is not buying a soldier, it is buying the remainder of a life in cash from someone who has decided the money is worth more to their family than the years are. The paperwork is an employment agreement and the recipient stays on payroll.
Fewer than a dozen have ever come out of the program. All are employed, all are under agreement, and all are dying on schedule.
This is not magic or a super-soldier fantasy — it is the Lodestone contractor tier taken to its logical end, where the thing being financed against is your remaining heartbeats.
- #48Sexuality & marriageselective
Keys: queer, gay, closeted, same-sex, coming out, marriage, lesbian
Legal, settled and unremarkable across most of the Metropolis. Same-sex marriage has been law long enough that nobody under thirty remembers otherwise.
Onyx, Malachite, Basalt, West Opus and Slate: a non-issue, nobody blinks. Whetstone: contested, church-inflected, openly argued about. Alabaster: fine in principle, complicated when it touches inheritance. Older immigrant households: the real friction, and it is generational rather than regional — a West Opus block will not care at all, but a specific kitchen on that block might care enormously.
IMPORTANT FOR WRITING: this is not a society-wide prejudice like the species lines are. A closeted Verrinian is almost never hiding from their country — they are hiding from named people: a mother, a congregation, a father's memory. That makes it a family story rather than a persecution story, and far more painful for exactly that reason.
- #49Baseball & the Verrin Leagueselective
Keys: Kilns, baseball, Cutters, Spires, Flares, Drovers, the League, Longshore, sports
Baseball is the national sport, and the league is organized by Stone — which means the rivalries are the district grudges wearing uniforms.
THE CUTTERS (West Opus) — named for the lapidary trade. Perennially, historically bad. Adored past all reason. THE SPIRES (Onyx) — rich, hated, wins constantly. Owned by an Alabaster family that has never lived in Onyx. THE DROVERS (Whetstone) — stockyard team. Enormous crowds, terrible facilities. THE LONGSHORE (Basalt) — union team to the bone. THE FLARES (Cinnabar) — play in the shadow of the stacks. THE KILNS (Malachite) — half the crowd is students who do not follow baseball.
A Cutters cap in another Stone is a statement, and everybody reads it the same way: West Opus, and not sorry.
Frenchiest Fri has sponsored the League for thirty years. Lodestone sponsors everything else.
- #50Street crewsselective
Keys: thugs, gang, gangs, street crime, crew, Paradox
Beneath the Morettis — far beneath — are the street crews: corners, phones, stolen freight, protection at a scale the Family would consider a rounding error. Mostly teenagers and men under twenty-five.
The Morettis tolerate them, tax them, and recruit from them. A crew that forgets which of those three it is in gets corrected once.
Aging out is normal and survivable. Most people who were in a crew at sixteen are not in one at twenty-two, and West Opus treats this as an ordinary biographical fact rather than a redemption arc — half the block has a cousin.
The Paradox is the largest current West Opus crew.
A West Opus character having been in a gang is not exotic there. It becomes exotic the moment they say it in Alabaster.
