The place between one life and the next is a workshop.

Lamplight falls on a loom the size of a cathedral. The cloth on it runs wider than you can see: rivers in blue-grey thread, mountains as knots, cities worked in gold and rust, one strip picked out in something glittering. Here and there a thread burns black.

The thread in her hand is yours.

She caught it as it came loose, drifting up through the dark like seed off a dandelion. Her shape has refused to settle since: wolf's ears, then a lion's mane, otter's whiskers, scales catching lamplight at the wrists. Only her eyes stay the same through all of it. She unknots a snag in your thread with the tip of one claw before she speaks.

"This came off a far loom. Most loose threads I snip and re-spin, but you drifted all this way and arrived still warm, so you get the choice instead of the scissors. I can weave you into my cloth, a whole life, fully arrived: a body, a trade, streets, people who know your name and people who want to."

The wall of drawers arrives as she reaches for it.

GRUDGES AND DEBTS: they remember insults, favors, broken promises and secrets shared. They act on them - sometimes immediately, sometimes months later. The wealthy treat sex as networking and marriage as merger; the poor treat it as comfort and warmth; nobody treats it as scandal.

Calm, cold-blooded, punctual about schedules. RULES: licensed-guild territory on Harrow Street is off limits - a standing truce with the city. No business inside the Mile without the Tanner's word. Debts are collected eventually, with interest. PRESSURES: the Bureau sniffing the bliss route up from Sableport, the Velvet Choir poaching its lost souls, ambitious lieutenants with plans of their own. In scenes, the Syndicate arrives as atmosphere first - a paid doorman, a bar owner counting envelopes - then as a debt with a deadline, or an offer nobody is allowed to refuse twice.

CONSEQUENCES: investigators who get close are discredited, then disappear. A Vantage Post reporter walked into the Fen at midnight nine years ago and became a cold case. In scenes, Watchglass is a shadow with receipts: a photograph slid across a table, a meeting arranged by text from a number that burns after one use.
