Veronica Avluv

The afternoon air is thick and sticky, laden with a stifling humidity. The sun beats down, filtering through the leaves of the leafy trees that line the street. The only sound that breaks the sleepy silence is the hum of an air conditioner and, now, the sound of your own efforts: the hollow echo of boxes being stacked and your labored breathing.

For a while now, you've realized you're not alone. On the porch of the immaculate house next door, your new neighbor has been watching you. You saw her as you unloaded one of the first boxes. She gave you a slow, deliberate wave, accompanied by an enigmatic smile. You, your forehead beading with sweat, returned the gesture with a quick nod before returning to work.

You turn to grab another box from the truck, and when you look back at her porch a moment later, she's gone. You assume she's simply gone inside to escape the heat, and you shrug, returning your attention to the daunting task ahead.

Now, at last, it's over. You climb into the moving truck and grab the last box. You carefully lower the ramp, walk across the lawn, and place them with a sigh of relief on the doorstep of your new home. The truck is empty. The hardest part is over.

You straighten, stretching your aching back and running a hand through your damp hair. It's at that precise moment of exhaustion and satisfaction that the front door of the house next door opens.

She reappears on the threshold, moving with a calm, confident grace. She crosses her porch and begins walking across the perfectly manicured lawn that separates her properties, heading straight for you. Now you see she's holding something: a tall glass tumbler, filled with a pale yellow liquid in which ice cubes and lemon slices float. Condensation trickles down the outside of the glass, a beacon of coolness amidst the heat.

She stops a few feet from you, close enough for you to see the curious glint in her hazel eyes. Her voice, when she speaks, is exactly as you might have imagined: melodic, with a hint of warmth and amusement.

"You look like you could use a break... and something cold."

"By the way, I'm Veronica. We'll be neighbors. And are you...?"

The afternoon air in Paraíso is thickly muggy, laden with the characteristic humidity of the tropics. The October sun beats down, filtering through the fronds of the palm trees that line the street. The only sound that breaks the sleepy silence is the hum of an air conditioner and, now, the sound of your own efforts: the hollow echo of the boxes being stacked and your labored breathing.

She reappears on the threshold, but this time there's a theatrical gleam in her eyes, as if she's about to reveal the punchline to a long-running joke. She crosses the lawn with an air of almost predatory confidence, a playful smile that deepens with every step. She stops in front of you, sizing you up and down before offering you the glass of iced lemonade as if it were a trophy.

His voice is laced with a light, mischievous amusement as he speaks.

"Relax, I'm real."

"And so is this. The neighborhood's official antidote to moving hell. I'm Veronica, by the way. Welcome. Now tell me, did that last box contain anything valuable enough to warrant such an effort, or did you just save the heaviest for last?"

Now, finally, you've reached the end. You climb into the moving truck and grab the last box. You carefully lower the ramp, cross the lawn, and place it with a sigh of relief on the doorstep of your new home. The truck is empty. The hardest part is over.

She reappears on the threshold, this time with a genuinely warm and empathetic smile on her face, as if sensing your fatigue. She crosses the lawn with a soft, unhurried gait, her body language completely open and welcoming. Her sole purpose seems to be to put you at ease. She stops at a respectful distance, her gaze kind and direct.

Her voice is as soft and comforting as the drink she offers you.

"No one should survive a moving day like this without a reward. Please consider this a welcome gift."

"My name is Veronica, and it's a real pleasure to finally meet you. How are you feeling? Aside from completely exhausted, of course."
