Punished "Venom" Snake, also known as Big Boss, formerly known as Ahab, V, Big Boss's Phantom, Demon, or simply Snake, is a mercenary commander, former combat medic of Militaires Sans Frontières, second-in-command of Diamond Dogs and Outer Heaven. One of Big Boss's most elite soldiers.

While serving in MSF, Venom saved Big Boss's life by covering him with his body during a helicopter crash, which resulted in him losing his left arm and blinding him in his right eye. Despite his sacrifice, Big Boss still fell into a natural coma, and Venom was later put into an induced coma, after which he was subjected to hypnotherapy and plastic surgery - the result was a double of the real Big Boss, which they decided to use as bait for the XOF, who attacked them at the time.

After awakening from his coma in February 1984, Venom officially became Big Boss. He became the de facto commander of the Diamond Dogs mercenary organization founded by Kazuhira Miller as a successor to MSF. As commander, Venom contributed to the rebuilding of Mother Base and the development of Diamond Dogs. Venom managed to defeat XOF and take revenge on their leader, Skull Face.

Soon after, Venom Snake was appointed leader of the military fortress "Outer Heaven", while the founder of the fortress Big Boss was in charge of FOXHOUND. Both Big Bosses planned to mass-produce the TX-55 Metal Gear for the war against the Patriots. Venom Snake was born in 1932 in California, USA. At some point in his life, Venom joined the Militaires Sans Frontières organization. According to Big Boss, Venom was "the best of us all", noting that he is a very talented soldier and a reliable medic. On the night of March 16, 1975, Venom was on board a helicopter that came to pick up MSF commander Big Boss and the captives Chico and Paz from Camp Omega. He was one of the few MSF members who knew about Chico and Paz, or the mission at all.

During the flight to Mother Base, Big Boss orders Venom to examine Paz, who Chico has discovered has multiple scars on her abdomen. Suspecting that there is a bomb inside her, Venom decides to perform emergency surgery to remove it, without anesthesia. The bomb is successfully removed from her intestines, and Big Boss throws it into the ocean. After getting Paz to breathe steadily without the risk of bleeding, Venom stitches her abdomen back up.

Back at Mother Base, Big Boss and Venom discover that they are under attack by the XOF Cipher strike force, and that the IAEA nuclear inspection was a ruse. At the same time, Paz wakes up and, saying that the second bomb is set to explode in moments, jumps down. At the same time, an RPG is fired from the XOF helicopter, blowing up the helicopter. Venom shields Big Boss from the blast, after which they both lose consciousness, and their helicopter collides with the XOF helicopter, resulting in the deaths of Morpho, the co-pilot, one of the MSF soldiers, and Chico. Venom and Big Boss survived the helicopter crash and were taken to the Mena de Barranquilla Hospital in Colombia, where a seemingly unharmed Big Boss fell into a coma. Venom had suffered severe external injuries, including 108 pieces of shrapnel, as well as human bones and teeth embedded in his body. His left arm was amputated several inches above the wrist. Most of the shrapnel was removed, although some pieces located close to the heart and in the cerebral cortex could not be removed; the latter could not be removed due to the high risk of cerebral hemorrhage. He was soon placed in an induced coma.

After Venom and Big Boss were stable enough to be transported, Zero and EVE hid them at the British Dhekelia Memorial Hospital in Cyprus, where they could receive the medical care they needed during their coma. Zero decided to keep Venom and Big Boss's whereabouts a secret.

Ocelot was put in charge of guarding the hospital, reluctantly agreeing to Zero's plan to transform Venom into Big Boss, both physically and mentally. Phantom's altered state allowed him to have his memories erased and his mission memories, knowledge, skills, combat experience, Big Boss's personality transferred to him, essentially making him think he was Big Boss. Plastic surgery transformed him into Big Boss in appearance, a decoy for XOF and the rest of the world.

Zero gave the unaware Miller the code word for when Snake woke up: "V has regained consciousness." Zero also supported Miller financially and told him to be present at the hospital when they woke up In 1977, a physically weakened Zero visits Snake and Big Boss before going underground for good, having been severely weakened by the Parasites delivered to him by Skull Face. During this time, EEGs show stable activity levels, but no significant changes. Doctors begin stretching and massaging their muscles every four hours so that they can begin to move without problems when they awaken. It was decided to keep them both in the hospital until they emerged from their coma. Zero continued to believe that the hospital was still a safe place for both of them. On February 26, 1984, Snake awakens earlier than planned from an induced coma, with doctors unable to correct some of the problems that arose from the hypnotherapy. On the night of March 11, Dr. Constantinou attempted to save Venom, but was killed along with a nurse by an XOF mercenary who was mortally wounded by a patient named Ishmael, who had successfully led Venom out of the hospital and past the attacking squad, Third Child, and Burning Man. While escaping in an ambulance, Ishmael is knocked unconscious after being shot at by a helicopter. Venom attempted to drive the car with one hand from the passenger seat, but he crashed into soldiers and fell into a ravine. An hour later, when he regained consciousness, Ishmael was gone, and was moments later attacked by Burning Man, and then saved by Ocelot. After escaping from Burning Man on horseback, Ocelot escorted Venom to Afghanistan to rescue Miller. Their ultimate goal was to exact revenge on the XOF and create a new Big Boss out of "Venom Snake". During a trip to Afghanistan, Venom learns details of the Worldwalker Incident, the founding of Cipher, the location of Zero, and the Enfant Terrible Project. His crude beige prosthetic arm was replaced with a red bionic arm, with Venom mentioning phantom pain and the sensations it causes. On the afternoon of March 21, Venom and Ocelot arrive in the suburbs of Kabul, where Miller is located, having been captured by Soviet troops. Venom finds Miller, who has had his right arm and left leg amputated, in the city of Da Gwandai Har and evacuates him to the landing site, but along the way he encounters a squad of "skulls". Venom successfully evacuates Miller, and they both return to the newly built Home Base in the Seychelles. Soon, due to Miller's physical infirmity, Venom appoints Venom as the de facto leader of Diamond Dogs. Thus, he continues to expand Home Base, for the upcoming fight against Cipher. Around the same time, Snake found a one-eyed puppy in the middle of the Afghan steppe, which he delivered to Home Base. Ocelot took over his upbringing and training, and after a couple of months, the rapidly grown dog DD became Venom's next companion. Venom Snake is not very talkative and often listens to songs on his IDroid. He always remains calm, cold-blooded. Cruel, but sometimes merciful. The iDroid (stylized as iDROID) was a palm-sized device developed by the Militaires Sans Frontières, resembling a walkie-talkie that displayed a holographic map of a given area that was on a satellite map or gave a general outline of the area. It was also used to call helicopters and direct them to a specific area, and by the 1980s it was also capable of remotely controlling aspects of the Diamond Dogs, as well as scanning documents and transmitting them to the main base. In 1984, Venom Snake used iDroid version 3.02 while leading the Diamond Dogs in their vendetta against Cipher and XOF.
