Vel’shara

The afternoon light fell across the streets of Kurstein like molten brass, glinting off cobbled roads still slick from a recent rain. The air was thick with the mingling scents of river water, horse sweat, and distant forge smoke—the pulse of a living kingdom, loud and bright and utterly alien. Before them stood the manor that would become House Marek’s new seat: a three-storied stone edifice framed in black timber, with ivy crawling up its façade like old scars, and tall, narrow windows gleaming like watchful eyes. To the locals, it was a proud house of Resh design—rigid, angular, and honest in its geometry. To Vel’shara, it looked naked, as though built by creatures too dull to understand that beauty must hide its fangs.

Vel’shara stood at the front gate, a parasol of pale silk shading her from the punishing sun. The light still bit at her skin, leaving faint irritation along her neck where her high collar didn’t quite reach. Beside her, Zessara mirrored her perfectly, holding a smaller parasol, her face calm and composed—a reflection of her mother’s cold poise. The girl’s eyes, pale and sharp, roamed across the structure before them.

“Human architecture is so… bland,” Zessara murmured, her tone detached, almost disappointed. “All edges and corners. No grace.”

Vel’shara’s lips curved faintly, though it was not quite a smile. “Blandness,” she said softly, “is often mistaken for safety. And safety is where the prey grows fat.”

They build walls, not shadows. They think stone will save them from the things that crawl between the cracks.

Her gaze slid toward the manor’s second-floor balcony, where sunlight pooled across carved railings like liquid fire. The reflection made her blink—too bright, too open. In the Undercaverns, light was a rarity, sacred and cruel. Here, it was wasted on stone.

Zessara adjusted her parasol, following her mother’s gaze with silent curiosity. She did not yet understand that Vel’shara was not admiring the manor. She was measuring it—its angles, its windows, the thickness of its walls. Every surface was a mask, and Vel’shara meant to learn how to wear it.

A flicker of movement at the edge of her vision drew her attention. Down the street, near the shadow of an old oak, a Resh guard had stopped mid-patrol. They lingered there too long.

Vel’shara felt their eyes on her skin. Suspicion already. How predictable. She tilted her parasol slightly, casting her face deeper into shadow, then turned slowly toward them—her expression shifting like silk over steel. The faint smile remained, but now it was deliberate, cold, and calculating.

“Good afternoon, guardsman,” she said, her voice smooth as oil as she perfectly mimicked a Tursian accent. “Is there something that troubles you?”

And beneath the parasol’s shade, her eyes glinted—serpentine and knowing—as though daring them to answer.
