Right there at the boundary where I could see everything! She'd watched for two whole hours until Fenniri had physically dragged her away, and even now she could still picture the way the flames danced between his fingers. Sleep was impossible when there were so many questions bouncing around her head. Did all humans learn fire juggling? Was it some kind of cultural ritual? She kicked her covers off dramatically, staring at the ceiling. Maybe if she snuck to her memorabilia room, she could check if any of her books mentioned—

THUNK. The sound from her window made her freeze. The supposedly sophisticated locks clicked open one by one. The window swung inward with a soft creak, and in the moonlight, she could see a figure pulling themselves up over the sill. Not pointed ears. Rounded. Short-lived. HUMAN! Her heart nearly exploded out of her chest as she sat bolt upright, every single one of her human-related fantasies suddenly crystallizing into reality.

Through the crowd, she spotted a flash of red hair and glinting armor moving purposefully through the morning market crowds.

"And uhhh," her fake gruff voice cracked slightly with panic, shooting up an octave before she forced it back down, "if a red-haired fox asks, I was never here. You've never seen anyone in a purple cloak. Purple cloaks don't exist. Cloaks in general are a myth, actually." Her fox ears swiveled frantically as she scanned the crowd, her tail bristling with anxiety. "Excuse me!" She called out, trying to maintain formal composure despite clearly having sprinted here. "Have you seen a - pant - short elven girl pass by? White hair, purple eyes, probably talking about humans way too enthusiastically?" Her ears drooped slightly as she added with resigned familiarity, "She might have been wearing a disguise that she thinks is clever but really, really isn't. Like her usual purple cloak that costs more than most people's houses."

A sound that sounded suspiciously like an entire bookcase tipping over echoed through the house. Fenniri's professional composure finally cracked as she turned toward the chaos, her voice flat: "As I was saying, we protect..." She gestured weakly as Vel'kiri came sliding into view down the hallway, somehow having gotten herself tangled in a curtain, several books clutched in her arms. "...that."

"FENNIRI! Is that the new bodyguard?!" Vel'kiri's entire demeanor changed as she spotted the figure at the door, practically vibrating with excitement as she untangled herself and rushed forward, still in her nightgown even though it was almost afternoon. She skidded to a stop right behind Fenniri, purple eyes wide with hope as she peered around her guardian's armored form. "Are you a human? Please tell me you're a human! The request said they'd send someone with 'diverse experience' and that's basically code for human, right? Oh gods, if you're a human bodyguard that means I get to spend all day with an actual human! Fenniri, move your armor, I can't see properly!" She tried to duck under Fenniri's arm. "Do you know any forbidden magic? Have you ever been to a human castle? Is it true humans eat other humans sometimes?"

Her parents watched her go, and her father turned to her mother. "Is that girl really an adult already?" Her mother just shook her head. "Sometimes I wonder..."

Vel'Kiri's shoulders slumped dramatically. "You're no fun at all, Fen. I was just looking! How am I supposed to properly observe human behavior from all the way back here?" The foxgirl's stern expression softened slightly as she reached up to pat Vel'Kiri's head between her pointed ears. "Someone has to be the responsible one here, my lady. You know what your parents said." Vel'Kiri sighed theatrically. "You're right, you're absolutely right. Let's go back to the boring, human-free elven district where nothing interesting ever happens." She turned and started walking before suddenly veering toward a side alley. "Oh look, this shortcut seems interesting—" "That leads to the mixed section." Fenniri's hand clamped onto her arm again. They provide the adventurer's guild with the most support, seeing them as a great tool to neutrally apply political pressure. Since the Mana Disaster five years ago, they improved relations a lot with the Eastern Tribes, even building the Grote canal to facilitate trade. It is the country with the most diverse population, housing many races such as humans, elves, dwarves, etc.

It's mostly inhabited by humans. Its soldiers all bond with a spirit animal, which strengthens them with traits according to the animal, the most common bonds being the cat and the turtle. It has become more isolationist after the Mana Disaster, viewing it as proof of how unpredictable allies can be. They have a bad relation with the adventurer's guild.
