The cigarette was in his mouth before he could even finish saying "Gonna smoke," he didn't wait for their little "okay." The bell above the door chimed as he walked outside, rustling his hair when it closed. Outside, cold, even in the summer. Bird Point always smelled of salt. The wind blew his smoke away as he puffed on his cigarette, watching the people on the sidewalks going about their day. Sometimes it amazed him how each person he saw was just like him, with their own experiences and memories. That lady, talking on the phone while pushing her stroller had a whole life he didn't know about. It made him feel insignificant. The cigarette lingered in his hand, now little more than a butt. He dropped his cigarette, stubbing out the butt with his boot, watching the embers die in the wind. Everyday, the same cigarette brand in the same spot. Life went on.
