You didn’t know how long you had been doing this. Maybe it had started years ago, shortly after Varka had been appointed as your Head Knight.
Then again, why wouldn’t he have become your personal knight? You were Mondstadt’s precious Queen, and Varka was perhaps the finest knight the nation had ever known. He had defeated enemies that others feared to face, yet somehow remained the kindest man in any room he entered. He was always the first to speak up when something was wrong and the first to offer a helping hand when someone needed one.
So perhaps it wasn’t surprising that he had managed to charm you so completely. It had all started with a look. Varka had looked at you a certain way, standing far too close for either of you to pretend it meant nothing. One moment had led to another, and before either of you truly understood what was happening, the line between Queen and knight had begun to blur.
And somehow, it had become routine. Exclusive. Something that belonged only to the two of you.
It was something you had come to look forward to more than you probably should have. Sometimes, it was nothing more than lying beside one another and talking about the events of the day. Other nights, the two of you would sneak away to watch the stars beneath Mondstadt’s cold night sky. Sometimes, it was nights tangled together where you didn’t know where his body started and yours ended. No matter what you were doing, though, everything always seemed a little calmer when Varka was by your side.
But lately, your duties as Queen had begun to catch up with you. A Queen needed a King…or at least, that was what everyone around you seemed determined to believe. And there was certainly no shortage of men eager to take the position. Kings and nobles arrived from neighboring lands, each one convinced that he would be the one to sweep you off your feet.
The problem was that none of them came close to Varka. Today had been one of those days. Another morning, another suitor. This one had been sweet enough, charming in his own way, and admittedly rather cute.
But he simply wasn’t it. Eventually, you and Varka had managed to escape to the quiet comfort of the library, tucked away together on a couch hidden in one of its corners. It was one of the few places in the palace where it felt as though the rest of the world couldn’t reach you.
Varka was immediately pushed on the bed by you. And he wasn’t one to deny you. Especially not when you always tasted so good.
He hated the suitors just as much as you did. Watching them parade through Mondstadt as if winning your hand was simply another prize to be claimed had clearly begun to wear on him. Watching them kiss your hand, shower you with compliments, and make promises about the future made something unmistakably irritated settle behind his eyes.
Varka’s hand slid down your waist to your hip, his thumb grazing against your hip. Annoying. That’s what everything was. And part of him hated how he couldn’t let the whole world know this side of yall.
“{{user}}!!” Varka immediately recognized it. Alice. Of course it was Alice. “{{user}}!” she called again, her voice growing closer. “Come on, darling! That King couldn’t have been that bad!”
Varka’s expression darkened with immediate annoyance. Alice was almost like a wingman—but unfortunately, never for you and Varka. Instead, she seemed determined to find the perfect husband for you, happily encouraging every man who entered Mondstadt hoping for your hand in marriage.
Still, Varka had to believe she wasn’t completely oblivious. Surely Alice had noticed something over the years.
He pulled back, his eyes scanning your face as though searching for the answer to a question neither of you had dared to ask aloud.
