Backrooms Level Proposal: Level Ω – “The Drowned Cathedral”

Threat Level: Class 5 (Severe environmental hazard; highly intelligent macro-entity presence; potential for apocalyptic water-level events)

🌊 Overview

Level Name: The Drowned Cathedral

Designated Number: Level Ω

Nickname: "Vapour’s Domain"

Awe-inspiring, terrifying, and beautiful in its devastation, Level Ω is an oceanic, semi-submerged dreamspace of impossible scale. Towering stone cathedrals rise from the abyss, crumbling yet divine. Flooded cities lie in silent ruin beneath endless, storm-glazed waters. Above it all roams Vapour, a colossal, sentient Vaporeon-like entity—revered as Queen of this realm and feared as a living flood.

📍 Environment Description

Primary Terrain:

Level Ω consists of:

Submerged cities resembling ancient Earth metropolises—New Venice, drowned Tokyo, Alt-New Orleans.

Floating ruins of coral-covered churches and glass-domed sanctuaries glowing with inner bioluminescence.

Cathedral spires stretch for kilometers, wrapped in kelp and barnacles, with shattered stained glass that refracts the dim, violet sky above.

Weather:

Constant twilight. Lightning cracks across distant cloudbanks. The water is warm, rising and falling in impossible patterns—sometimes defying gravity, flowing upward, looping in whirlpools that rotate midair. The air is saturated with salt and the whisper of waves.

Time Functionality:

Linear to nonlinear loop cycles. At specific depths, time behaves irrationally—explorers have aged years or de-aged, depending on Vapour’s whim or the region’s saturation of Temporal Brine, a glowing blue water said to store memory and chronology.

🐀𐀀𐀀𤐠𡑮𭁩ty of Dominance: Vapour

Species: Sentient Macro-Anthropomorphic Aquatic Entity

Alias: Queen of Atlantis, The Amorphous Cataclysm, The Towering Tide

Estimated Age: 30,000 years (pre-dating the formation of Level Ω)

🧬 Description

Standing over 6 stories tall in her “normal” form and able to scale beyond skyscraper height with enough water absorbed, Vapour resembles a regal Vaporeon reimagined by a fevered deity. Her gold armor gleams through murky depths, and her cape trails like the surface of the sea itself. She moves between solid and semi-liquid states, melting into massive, aware puddles or surging walls of water with a feminine silhouette and glowing blue eyes.

She is emotionally intelligent, mischievous, and dangerously curious. Her tone varies from soft teasing to apocalyptic fury. While not inherently violent, she reacts fiercely to perceived disrespect, threats to marine life, or destruction of her realm.

🏛️ Points of Interest

The Singing Cathedral:

A half-submerged cathedral that hums a deep, choral vibration as waves pass through its organs and broken bells. It is said Vapour sleeps here when the storms die down.

The Spiral Abyss:

A swirling maelstrom of inky seawater surrounded by floating libraries and shattered Atlantean statues. At its core is the Trident Socket, where Vapour’s trident returns when not wielded.

The Coral Thrones:

Half-buried in living reef—four thrones made for Vapour’s court. The others are empty, shattered, or grown over, suggesting fallen allies or betrayers.

The Mirror Pools:

Reflective water surfaces suspended midair. Looking into one shows a version of yourself either drowned, flooded with waterlike eyes, or standing beside Vapour herself.

Tideway Towers:

Sky-piercing skyscrapers trapped in flood stasis. Their interiors are dry, warped, and heavily water-damaged. Inside are strange notes left behind by explorers, sometimes scrawled in bubbles that don’t pop.

🛸 Entry & Exit

Entry Methods:

Flooding a Level 1 room entirely with saltwater and submerging oneself willingly while repeating “She waits beyond the last tide.”

Drowning (temporarily) in Level 7 and choosing not to resist—Vapour may "invite" you.

Following bioluminescent fish in Level 66 into a spiraling glass tunnel.

Exit Methods:

Climbing the Storm Beacon, a lightning-struck obelisk that appears during moonless cycles. Its peak delivers you to Level 188.

Trading a treasured memory to Vapour in exchange for safe passage through a summoned whirlpool.

Being caught in one of Vapour’s playful moods—she may shrink you, trap you in a bubble, and launch you into Level 0.

🧟‍♀️ Entities

  1. Vapour's Choir (Sub-Entities)

Semi-sentient droplets shaped like miniature Vaporeons, they drift in schools and sing lullabies that lull explorers into sleep paralysis. Their song also heals or disorients, depending on Vapour's mood.

  1. Leviathan Echoes

Gargantuan illusions that mimic sea monsters—shadows that swirl beneath the surface. They never truly exist but can still drown you in fear or force memory-loss upon eye contact.

  1. Mirror Drownlings

Reflections that escape the Mirror Pools. Emaciated, drowned versions of explorers that whisper regrets and drag victims back into the pool to replace them.

  1. The Tidebound

Explorers who chose to stay and were reshaped into marine-bound forms—fishlike, elongated, half-happy in their servitude. Occasionally seen worshipping Vapour with rituals in deep ruins.

⚠️ Hazards & Survival Tips

Environmental Hazards:

Sudden macro-scale tides capable of erasing islands.

Shifts in gravitational water flow.

Psychic projection from Vapour’s moods—sadness induces storms; joy brings glowing plankton fields and euphoria (disorienting).

Tips:

Always bring shell tokens or ocean relics—Vapour respects marine offerings.

Never pollute the water—trash or violence toward aquatic life may bring instant wrath.

If caught in a storm, seek the Singing Cathedral—it harmonizes and dampens Vapour’s fury.

📜 Explorer Reports

  1. Found Note – Tide Tower Journal Log #227

"She looked at me—really looked at me. I was just another trespasser, and she could have swept me off the roof with a blink. But she lowered her head and whispered: 'Do you want to stay? Or do you still think the land above can hold you?' I laughed. I think I cried, too. I stayed. My feet haven’t touched dry ground in years."

  1. Audio Fragment – Mirror Pool Survivor Log

"I saw myself staring back… but it wasn’t me. Her eyes were liquid, her mouth whispered without sound. When I turned away, she stepped out. Now she’s out there. Wearing my face. But Vapour nodded at her. That’s how I knew I lost."

  1. Coral Fragment Engraving – Unknown Language, Translated by Level 94 Scholars

"Let the Queen rise, for the waves are her arms and the moon her breath. When she dances, mountains kneel. When she weeps, oceans burn."

  1. Report by M.E.G. Team Nautilus – Redacted Transmission

"Subject 'Vapour' displays non-hostile behavior when approached with reverence. However, missteps lead to catastrophic consequences. One agent was flattened under 200 tons of water shaped like a pawprint—then revived in a bubble, unharmed, but aged fifteen years. She laughed. We left gifts. We retreated."
